Before 2010, there were no Israeli horror films. Then distinctly Israeli serial killers, zombies, vampires, and ghosts invaded local screens. The next decade saw a blossoming of the genre by young Israeli filmmakers. New Israeli Horror: Local Cinema, Global Genre (Rutgers UP, 2024) is the first book to tell their story. Through in-depth analysis, engaging storytelling, and interviews with the filmmakers, Olga Gershenson explores their films from inception to reception. She shows how these films challenge traditional representations of Israel and its people, while also appealing to audiences around the world. Gershenson introduces an innovative conceptual framework of adaptation, which explains how filmmakers adapt global genre tropes to local reality. It illuminates the ways in which Israeli horror borrows and diverges from its international models. New Israeli Horror offers an exciting and original contribution to our understanding of both Israeli cinema and the horror genre. A companion website to this book is available at here. Dr. Gershenson is Professor and former Chair of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His major focus is on the clinical and translational research or rare ovarian cancers. Dr. Matsuo is a clinician-scientist in the area of gynecologic oncology. Equally attentive to patient care, he devotes his work to scholarly activity related to patient outcomes, quality improvement, and healthcare service research in gynecologic malignancies.   Highlights: Role and effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy have been understudied in less common epithelial ovarian cancer, including clear cell, mucinous, and low-grade serous histologies. In this retrospective analysis of two U.S. tumor registries, utilization of neoadjuvant chemotherapy has increased for these less common epithelial ovarian cancers in recent years. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was associated with decreased overall survival in low-grade serous ovarian cancer, and this association was particularly observed in historically favorable groups (younger, healthier, and earlier disease). The results of current investigation endorse the importance of being aware of histology-specific survival effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in epithelial ovarian cancer. In advanced low-grade serous ovarian cancer, data suggest that primary cytoreduction may be beneficial even optimal cytoreduction is not achievable in certain patients (younger, healthier, and earlier disease).

Dimitry, Enduring Planet Co-Founder, speaks to Green Planet Blue Planet about the fund's support for various projects from software with indirect impacts to planting trees with very explicit impacts. He speaks to the profound impact of tax incentives included in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to catalyze transformative decarbonization. Rather than necessitating a complete overhaul of existing economic and energy systems, Dimitry said by altering the economic dynamics, the tax incentive has become one of the most influential pieces of climate legislation in the US, fostering the largest expansion of clean energy investment in the nation's history. While some might have hoped for radical disruption, the government's approach to supporting decarbonization focuses on incentivizing clean energy deployment within the current framework. While it is laudable to have large decarbonization goals,  Dimitry explains that for Enduring Planet, all initiatives are considered, as can be seen in their portfolio case studies. The impact metrics across businesses may be dramatically different, but it's all within their climate finance scope - from water to energy to waste. By design, every dollar they put to work is having an impact. Enduring Planet offers rapid financing without dilution, personal guarantees, or collateral. It is climate focused for impactful teams, big or small, working across mitigation, removal, adaptation, and resilience to address the climate crisis. They provide two products now, Revenue Based Financing and Climate Grant Advances for government backing to be repaid once the funding is received. Join Dimitry and Julian in this discussion of the nature of the work in a new climate economy, “where every business is a climate business.” The two explore the idea of dismantling capitalism and incentives for extractive structures that are misaligned with climate change. Learn more about Dimitry and how he came to his ecological conclusions while working in Honduras with the Peace Corps, addressing questions such as how to restore damaged ecosystems and bring the planet back to a healthy, happy place, only to determine what motivates him is love of people and a desire for equity and accessibility to services and principles of conservation. #About Dimitry Gershenson Dimitry co-founded Enduring Planet, building on his 10+ years of experience across climate tech, operations, and impact investing. Prior to Enduring Planet, Dimitry led M&A and served as COO for Rango Wireless, an Enduring Ventures portfolio company. Before that, Dimitry built Meta's Energy Access program, a $15M+ investing initiative that enabled energy access for 3M people and unlocked nearly $500M in additional capital in underserved markets like Kenya and India. While at Meta, Dimitry also led the development of multiple predictive ML products in the cleantech space and built corporate accelerator programs for impact startups in India and Puerto Rico. Outside of Enduring Planet, Dimitry sits on the board of Ecosafi, a Lower carbon-backed climate startup enabling clean cooking in emerging markets. In this episode of the IJGC podcast, Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Pedro Ramirez, is joined by Dr. David M. Gershenson to discuss updates on germ cell tumors. Dr. Gershenson is Professor and former Chair of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His major focus is on the clinical and translational research or rare ovarian cancers. Highlights: - The treatment of malignant ovarian germ cell tumor has evolved over the last 5 decades to represent one of our most remarkable success stories, with cure in 95+% of patients with stage I/II and approximately 75% of patients with stage III/IV. - AGCT1531 is a very important trial, which, if positive, will reduce toxicity by extending surveillance to patients with stage IA or IB malignant ovarian germ cell tumors, including grade 2 and 3 immature teratomas, yolk sac tumors, and non-gestational choriocarcinomas and will result in the substitution of carboplatin for cisplatin in the regimen for treatment of stage IC-III. - Fertility-sparing surgery is possible in the majority of young patients with malignant ovarian germ cell tumor, related to the following: a) 95% are confined to one ovary ; b) approximately 2/3s are stage I; and c) most patients are in their teenage years, 20s, and 30s and have not completed childbearing. - Major controversies differentiating the treatment of children and adults by pediatric oncologists/pediatric surgeons and gynecologic oncologists, respectively, include the extent of surgical staging and the role of postoperative chemotherapy in patients with pure immature teratoma. - For patients with malignant ovarian germ cell tumors who recur following primary therapy, BEP is recommended for those who have been treated with surgery alone. For those who have previously received BEP, standard management generally includes high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue. - Aspects of management of malignant ovarian germ cell tumors that require further study include the role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and the role of secondary cytoreductive surgery.

How can we finance the myriad startups and small business transitions that will bring the sustainable economy to full flower? Our guest, Dimitry Gershenson, is cofounder and CEO of Enduring Planet, argues that the climate crisis has made the human and business response inevitable. Enduring Planet was launched to non-dilutive financing in the form of unsecured loans, to climate mitigation companies that help reduce emissions, carbon removal startups that capture CO2 from the atmosphere, and firms that provide climate adaptation and resilience services that will be needed in response to climate change. He shares the key trends in the market driving new financing and how his team selects companies based on similar criteria as a venture capital firm without taking stock, providing loans based on the borrowers' cash flow. Enduring Planet also seeks out diverse and inclusive companies and organizations delivering goods and services in marginalized communities.Dimitry explains why Enduring Planet invested in Compost Colorado and AQUAOSO, an agricultural data company, as examples of recent deals. Interest in investing for sustainability has soared in recent years. Bloomberg reports that in 2021 more than $1.6 trillion of debt financing went to corporate and infrastructure transitions to renewable, low-carbon and low-impact business approaches. That brings the total invested in sustainable paths to more than $4 trillion, or about 4.2% of the value of the world's economy last year. Tune in to get a sense of the financing activity at the grassroots of the sustainable economy and be introduced to debt financing for sustainability-focused startups. From living in rural Honduras to Facebook and now funding climate tech, meet Dimitry Gershenson, Founder and CEO of Enduring Planet Ep.#43 Dimitry Gershenson, Founder and CEO of Enduring Planet - Tech4Climate Podcast by Startup Basecamp PART 1: Meet the founder: During this new episode of our Founder Series, we are sitting down with Dimitry Gershenson, Co-founder and CEO of Enduring Planet. Dimitry built Enduring Planet to be a fintech lender focused exclusively on the new climate economy in order to provide fast and simple, founder-friendly capital to climate entrepreneurs, both big and small. His company lends to startups and SMBs through a product called revenue-based financing which requires no collateral, no personal guarantees, and no dilution. Above all, it was designed to be easy and fast for entrepreneurs so they can apply in ten minutes, get a term sheet in a week, and get funded in 30 days. I was excited to speak with Dimitry, who discovered his passion for sustainability while working in Honduras. Realizing the possibility of improving livelihoods while meeting climate and environmental goals, Dimitry got a master's in Energy and Resources at Berkeley University before working at Facebook to build a program improving access to energy in emerging markets helping get people electricity for the first time and helped get access for credit to women entrepreneurs that were building ecommerce businesses on the platform. He then transitioned to Enduring Planet, a smallholding company with a variety of portfolios, where he eventually pitched the idea to create Enduring Planet to specifically fund climate-focused companies. In this episode of the IJGC podcast, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Pedro Ramirez is joined by Dr. David M. Gershenson to discuss the use of trametinib in low-grade serous cancer. Dr. Gershenson is Professor and former Chair of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His major focus is on the clinical and translational research of rare ovarian cancers. Highlights: Trametinib represents a new standard for the treatment of recurrent low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary/peritoneum. The findings of GOG 281 suggest that women whose tumor harbors a MAPK mutation (KRAS, NRAS, BRAF) may have a greater probability of response to trametinib, but the results are hypothesis-generating, and further studies are needed. Importantly, trametinib should not be withheld from a woman whose tumor lacks MAPK mutations. Based on the findings of GOG 281 and preclinical studies, future trials will include combinations of a MEK inhibitor plus endocrine therapy and novel agents targeting the MAPK signaling pathway or, more specifically, RAS.

Fifty years of Holocaust screenplays and films -largely unknown, killed by censors, and buried in dusty archives – come to life in Olga Gershenson‘s The Phantom Holocaust: Soviet Cinema and Jewish Catastrophe (Rutgers University Press, 2013). As she ventures across three continents to uncover the stories behind these films, we follow her adventures, eager to learn what happened, why, when – and what comes next. This page-turning exploration begins with the first-ever films made about the Nazi threat to Jewish life in the 1930s – artistically successful movies released to crowded theaters in the USSR, Europe, and the US. The power of film being what it is, some 1930s viewers learned the lesson of Nazi hatred and fled to safety when Germany invaded the USSR in 1941. Immediately after the war, Soviet filmmakers again broke new ground when in 1945 they portrayed the Holocaust in “The Unvanquished.” The war just over, Soviet censors, Gershenson discovered, had no set policy and hardly knew how Stalin wanted them to respond. But the respected filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein supported the film, a movie featuring Jewish victims filmed on site in Kiev; it became one of the few Soviet movies that identified the Holocaust with Jews. Thereafter, the Holocaust would be a universal problem sans Jews that occurred anywhere but in the USSR. Among the stories that Gershenson relates, she raises the curtain on “Ordinary Fascism,” a blockbuster when it was released in the USSR in 1966.  The three-hour black-and-white documentary montage, narrated by its famous director Mikhail Romm, apparently drew 20 million Soviets to cinemas before it was withdrawn. Gershenson describes Ordinary Fascism as “a real breakthrough,” “stunning,” and an explosion.” Romm’s irreverent, casual commentary to Nazi newsreels, footage, photos, and art explored the psychology of Nazism – and, viewers recognized, made Soviets reflect on themselves. Why did Soviet censors refuse to permit a book on the subject to be released? Censors explained that a film would be seen once and forgotten. A book, on the other hand, would start people thinking! As Gershenson explains: “Half of all Holocaust victims…were killed on Soviet soil, mostly in swift machine-gun executions. And yet, watching popular Holocaust movies…the impression is that Holocaust victims were mainly Polish and German Jews killed in concentration camps.”  Her stories explain why Soviet filmmakers almost never shared the Soviet Holocaust experience on the screen.
