“There was a sense of discovery about what this series was going to be about. It was going to be about young people -- with all of their shenanigans, and the maneuvering, and all the silliness that takes place with that. But it was also going to be about growing up. These five people, and the fabric that holds them together.”  -- Asaad Kelada - producer/director, The Facts of LifeSusan and Sharon welcome legendary Director Asaad Kelada. In a career spanning four decades, Asaad Kelada has directed over 340 episodes of television, including Rhoda, Phyllis, The Tony Randall Show, Benson, WKRP in Cincinnati, One Day at a Time, Night Court, Valerie, Who's the Boss and The Office -- as well as four seasons of The Facts of Life. In Part 1 of this wide-ranging interview, we touch on Asaad's relationship to the young actors on Facts of Life; learning to trust them -- and himself; and his beginnings as the lead singer in Egypt's first ever Rock ‘n' Roll Boy Band!  THE CONVERSATIONWHAT I REALLY WANT TO DO IS DIRECT! - How getting accepted to the Yale School of Drama taught Asaad which side of the stage he really wanted to be on.THE 5-YEAR DIRECTING SCHOOL: Observing all the MTM shows from the bleachers, for five years, got Asaad ready for his first TV job: Directing Valerie Harper in Rhoda!DAY ONE: On his first day directing The Facts of Life, the only person he recognized that he had worked with before was… Tootie (Kim Fields)!DOUBLE STANDARD: In this early episode of The Facts of Life, Asaad realized the potential of the show: “It was just like being in the theater, like working on a play --  with substance, with humor, with intelligence -- and yet they were young girls. This was television in a new form.RUNAWAY TRAIN: Asaad describes the increasing tension and hi-stakes artistry of a show as it speeds thru its season -- and how he learned to not fall off!ON CHARLOTTE RAE: “She and I were the grownups in the room. She was the centerpiece in a show about four girls.”STORY CONFERENCE -- WITH THE CAST: “After the table read, we'd just talk -- talk about what the episode is dealing with, what it's about, how it all ties together.”FACTS OF LIFE GOES TO PARIS: “It was a trial by fire. Every single shot, every single frame was filmed on location. We were at Notre Dame, the Champs Elysee… How can this be called a job?”So join Susan and Sharon -- and Asaad -- as they talk George Clooney, The Bob Newhart Show, Grant Tinker, Geri Jewel, speaking French, Bill Haley & the Comets, Nancy McKeon -- and being ready when your opportunity finally comes!GET READY FOR PART 2 -- NEXT EPISODE! In this episode of The Box of Oddities, we begin with the extraordinary life—and tragic death—of Khaled al-Asaad, the Syrian archaeologist who courageously protected the ancient city of Palmyra from destruction. Refusing to reveal the location of hidden treasures, he faced unspeakable brutality to ensure the survival of irreplaceable history. His legacy is carved not in stone but in sacrifice. Then, from solemnity to sheer absurdity, we dive headfirst into The Great Stork Derby—a 1930s Canadian legal spectacle where a millionaire's will turned childbirth into a competitive sport. Yes, a real-life baby-making contest. What happens when estate law meets aggressive procreation? A weirdly fertile lawsuit. Two stories: one man dies for ancient artifacts; several women compete for a fortune by having the most artifacts. Heroism and hilarity. Antiquity and maternity. Welcome to The Box. In part 2 of our conversation with Asaad Ali on *Beyond Sets & Reps*, Asaad continues to share his journey, discussing his transition from athlete to videographer and his approach to building his own legacy while honoring his father's. He recalls his early career in baseball, including scouting for the White Sox and coaching, before taking a turn into videography at the University of Louisville. This career shift provided a new platform for his competitive drive as he set his sights on producing content that reflects his deep understanding of sports and the athlete's journey. Asaad discusses the importance of leveraging his name responsibly, demonstrating how he's shaped his professional identity through hard work, self-motivation, and the experiences that have defined his path. Asaad also emphasizes the mindset that helps him create impactful sports content, drawing from his own athletic background and inspiration from directors who bring authenticity to their work. He details the fulfillment he finds in capturing the emotions and moments that matter most to athletes and their families, building meaningful relationships along the way. His insights encourage young athletes to consider life beyond the game and invest in personal growth early. If you missed part 1, be sure to go back and listen, as Asaad's reflections on growing up as Muhammad Ali's son and his journey through sports set the stage for this powerful continuation. Our host Stephanie Fortunato sits down with Rana Amirtahmasebi and Jason Schupbach, co-editors of The Routledge Handbook of Urban Cultural Planning, to be released in December 2024. The Handbook is the first survey of the latest and greatest thinking in urban cultural planning in 10 years, exploring approaches to bringing more cultural vibrancy and engagement in sustainable urban development. The book focuses on the spatial and social organization of urban spaces that facilitate artistic production, foster community well-being, and nurture expressions of civic identity.AcknowledgmentThe Handbook is a partnership between the editors and the World Cities Culture Forum, a network of civic leaders from over 40 creative cities across six continents who share solutions to build a world where culture is at the heart of thriving cities. Leadership at the forum, including Executive Director Laia Gasch, provided significant assistance in helping to structure the book and identify authors. In addition, the editors are grateful for the assistance provided by Global Cultural Districts Network, including Founder Adrian Ellis and Director of Special Projects Stephanie Fortunato, in finding authors and identifying key issues. Also, we are grateful to the staff of the National Endowment for the Arts for assisting identifying authors, including Chair Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson, Senior Advisor Jennifer Hughes and Director of State, Regional and Local Partnerships Michael Orlove. In this first part of the conversation, Asaad Ali shares his experience of growing up as the son of Muhammad Ali, delving into the unique and challenging aspects of living in his father's public shadow. Asaad reflects on the symbolic presence of his father in Louisville, where reminders of Muhammad Ali are everywhere—from airport names to local landmarks—underscoring the deep connection between his father and the city. He discusses the sense of pride and resilience he inherited from his father's legacy, aligning it with the underdog mentality often embraced by the University of Louisville community. Throughout the conversation, Asaad emphasizes the importance of remembering Muhammad Ali as both a global icon and a devoted father, offering insights into his journey to navigate and define his own identity. Asaad's memories reflect both ordinary and profound moments, including watching his father's fights on VHS as a way to connect while Muhammad Ali was traveling for humanitarian work. He shares stories about how people reacted differently to his father in Louisville versus other places, allowing Asaad and his family moments of privacy that might not be possible today. He also delves into how he chose to carve his own path through baseball rather than boxing, finding a personal sense of accomplishment outside of his father's legendary career. This episode reveals a thoughtful, grounded approach to balancing family legacy with personal aspirations, providing listeners a deeper understanding of both the public and private dimensions of the Ali family. Al-Ghamdi was then held in solitary confinement for months and was refused proper care despite suffering from epilepsy. Similarly, his brother, Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, was convicted in 2023 over tweets linked to an anonymous Twitter account that criticized the regime's economic policies and called for the release of political prisoners. For this, he was sentenced to death. Both of these sentences are part of Saudi Arabia's repression of free expression and stifling of civil society, as evidenced by the regime going so far as to target dissidents' families to force compliance. HRF has called for the Al-Ghamdi brothers' immediate release and access to necessary medical care. Life happens! Many of us find ourselves at a point we never thought we'd be. Not only has life thrown us curve balls, we have to somehow keep going. However, if we are not careful we can stuff our feelings along the way and think we are being strong. Resilience is more than gritting our way through life, it is about our willing to be vulnerable about what's challenging. Patty joins the channel to discuss her journey to spiritual resilience. Access Patty's Substack! https://pattyasaad.substack.com/ Todd and Patty Assad were full-time ministers for over 36 years, but in their 60s, they retired from the ministry and started over with new careers and a baby. Their adorable granddaughter, Charlotte, came to live with them about a year and a half ago when she was six months old. They became Charlotte's primary caregivers because of family mental health issues and addiction. Little Charlotte has already endured two open heart surgeries and other medical problems. Their lives have changed radically. Todd is now a realtor, and Patty writes a spiritual but humorous newsletter called “What Just Happened?” at pattyasaad.substack.com. Interview Outline: Tell us about your background and why you decided to begin writing content? Today I want to focus on the concept of resilience but I'd like to by talking about the expectations that we have about Christian life. People can become resentful rather than becoming resilient, what are some resentments that you have experienced or helped others in dealing with? How do you define resilience? How do you approach building resilience in others? What has ministry taught you about helping people become more resilient? What are some things you have learned about God's character when facing challenges?
