Special Guest Speaker Michael Tucker brings this week's message, “So Emotional." Key Verse: John 11:1-35 ESV: “Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept.” Sermon Topics: Emotions, Faith If you enjoyed the podcast, please subscribe and share it with your friends on social media. Mardi Gras has popped up so quickly this year. World Pride is kicking off as Mardi Gras comes to a close this coming weekend, which is the last weekend of February. This edition of Mardi Gras Anthems arrives a couple of days before the big party which is celebrating it's 45th anniversary. For this set I wanted to present a more house flavoured disco/pop sound. These are all songs I have heard at the MG party over the years with the exception of a couple which came out last year. The set kicks off with Cyndi Lauper's timeless classic "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" remixed by the Ghostbusterz. Division 4 works his magic on three remixes here for Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston. His remix of "So Emotional" is the definitive mix in my opinion. Dirty Disco, who is playing at World Pride/Mardi Gras events features four amazing remixes at the front and back end of the set. Melbourne based remixer Luin turns out a funky mix of Madonna's "Who's That Girl". Check out his soundcloud page for stacks of great remixes.. Subesque's house classic "Ain't No Love" is updated by Jet Boot Jack who is turning out some really great remix productions. It wouldn't be a MG anthems edition without remixes from 7th Heaven, Hex Hector and Wayne G. All feature remixes here. Gloria Gaynor's classic anthem is remixed by Dirty Disco and the set closes out with Debby Holiday's uplifting "Joyful Sound" and finishes with Beyonce's amazing "Listen" mixed by DJ Escape & Dom Capello. This years MG anthems is a vocal diva journey. Have fun and be safe.   Season 2: Episode 10 Billy Steinberg     Welcome to Season 2, Episode 10 of Song Chronicles. Our special guest is Songwriter Hall of Fame member Billy Steinberg, who with collaborator Tom Kelly wrote many Number 1 hits including "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper, "So Emotional" by Whitney Houston, "Alone" by Heart, and "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles. The duo also co-wrote "I'll Stand By You" with Chrissie Hynde and "I Touch Myself" with Christine Amphlett and Mark McEntee of The Divinyls. Billy Steinberg and Cyndi Lauper in Finland, 1988. Billy's first hit song was "How Do I Make You," which Linda Ronstadt decided to record after hearing demos from Steinberg's band Billy Thermal. In our conversation, Billy shares how he found out Rondstadt would record the song which later reached the Billboard Top 10. Billy Thermal's unreleased 1980 album In 1981, Steinberg began a momentous collaboration with songwriter Tom Kelly, with whom he wrote many memorable hits of the 80s and 90s. Billy shares how he and Tom found their groove as co-writers and how they always tried to write to make themselves happy rather than customizing songs for potential artists. Their breakout hit was "Like A Virgin," the title track of Madonna's second album. You'll hear Billy's personal story behind the lyrics to "Like A Virgin" and what it meant for him to hear the song sung by an Italian nun, directed at God. Billy Steinberg, Tom Kelly, and Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, 1992. Steinberg's lyrics resonate throughout the years because their themes are universal — which is different from being general or bland, as we discuss. We also talk about how the Brill Building Era inspired him to become a songwriter.   Billy has gone on to write with many other songwriters, including frequent collaborator Josh Alexander with whom he co-write "Give Your Heart a Break" by Demi Lovato and "Too Little Too Late" by Jojo. They have also written numerous songs with the artist LP, whom Steinberg calls "a female Roy Orbison." Born Keith Douglas Sweat, he was raised in Harlem and by the time he was 14 he had performed at various nightclubs in and around New York City. He graduated from the City College of New York with a BS degree in ‘communications’, after which he worked for a brief period as a successful brokerage assistant in a Wall Street firm. Despite a prosperous career at the Wall Street, he chose to pursue his passion for music and began writing songs and tried selling them to various record labels. In 1975, he began his career in music as a member of the Harlem based band called the ‘Jamilah’. In 1984, he left ‘Jamilah’ in order to begin a solo career and subsequently sang at various nightclubs in New York. He was quickly noticed and given an opportunity to record an independent album for ‘Stadium Records’. He recorded ‘My Mind Is Made Up’ for the ‘Stadium Records’ and he was also credited as the co-writer and co-producer of ‘You Are the One for Me’. On November 25, 1987 his debut solo album ‘Make It Last Forever’ was released, which sold three million copies. The biggest hit from this album was the song that inaugurated the new jack swing era "I Want Her"   83.    Bobby Brown (@ 19 yrs. old): Brown changed producers for this album and worked extensively with hit-making songwriting and production duo Babyface and L.A. Reid. Alex Henderson of AllMusic wrote: “Don't Be Cruel was to Bobby Brown what Control was to Janet Jackson – a tougher, more aggressive project that shed his "bubblegum" image altogether and brought him to a new artistic and commercial plateau. With "My Prerogative" and the title song, Brown became a leader of new jack swing”   84.    Al B. Sure!(@ 20 yrs. old): During the late '80s, Al B. Sure! enjoyed a brief run as one of new jack swing's most popular romantic singers. Born Al Brown in Boston, he grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, listening to smooth crooners like Marvin Gaye and Johnny Mathis; he later became interested in rap and added that skill to his vocal repertoire. At age ten, he and a friend performed on a song written by Ellie Greenwich for the soundtrack of Sesame Street, and later he began writing songs with his cousin Kyle West. While in high school (where he quarterbacked the football team), he became friends with Edward Ferrell, aka DJ Eddie F, who was working with rapper Heavy D at the time. Eddie F introduced the still-teenaged Al B. Sure! to Heavy D's manager/Uptown label head Andre Harrell, who had him sing backing vocals on several Heavy D tracks and helped him get a deal with Warner Brothers. In 1987, Al was selected by Quincy Jones as the first winner of the Sony Innovators Talent Search. He collaborated with Jones on various projects, most notably the platinum single “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite)” from Jones’ double-platinum-certified album Back on the Block. On this hit, he was one of a quartet with El DeBarge, Barry White, and James Ingram. His debut album of 1988 In Effect Mode topped the Billboard R&B chart for seven consecutive weeks, selling more than two million copies.   85.    Open Comments:   86.    Question: Al B. Said “There’s a generation of women starving to be told I love you again” What happened?! Who is bringing it back?   87.    Movie Scene: Coming to America   88.    Trailer:   89.    The Hollywood Reporter's original review: “Eddie Murphy's latest Coming to America is likely to leave the wreath-bearers, the frantic faithful, the crowd herders and the legions of line-waiters in numbed, disbelieving disappointment…Distressingly, the film flops into the blandest of sitcom formats, never realizing its regal potential...Coming to America is the filmic equivalent of using a Maserati to go to the corner grocery store…Yes, there are some crazy pieces crammed into America — Murphy and Hall in their multi-roles do a running black barbershop bit that is good and nuts — but this comedy is generally tame and sappy…The plot itself is pathetic…No getting around it, while the script completely misses as a social satire, the writers have botched the romance part of America as well…Rivaling the inept screenplay is John Landis' cornball direction, which includes a TV season's worth of reactive cutaways to an ugly poodle…On a production level, at least, Coming to America gets top marks. — Duane Byrge originally published on June 24, 1988.   90.    Open Comments:   91.    Question: Is this Eddie’s best movie? Was Arsenio better than Eddie? Sequel or a remake?   92.    Television Scene: A Different World   93.    Theme song differences   94.    Debbie Allen’s influence   95.    Why didn’t any of them go onto stardom? -   96.    Vote: Best/most important/favorite pop culture item from 1988?

Born in the cultural melting pot that is New York City, Morales is more than just a notable figure listed on Wikipedia. To aficionados and newcomers alike, he's akin to a musical prophet who has shaped the landscape of house music and club culture. Many revere David Morales as one of the godfathers of house music, sharing this illustrious title with other luminaries like Frankie Knuckles, Shep Pettibone, Todd Terry, Eric Kupper, and Masters At Work Together, they've constructed the very foundations of a genre that has transcended time and geographical boundaries. Simply put, Morales doesn't just participate in this realm; he owns it. The first time David Morales entered my sonic sphere was back in 1991 with his groundbreaking rework of Shawn Christopher's "Another Sleepless Night." This track alone was enough to convert me into a loyal follower, an experience shared by countless others. It's only fitting that we commence our four-volume tribute series with this transformative song. While this tribute isn't intended to be an exhaustive compilation of his extensive discography, it aims to serve as a vibrant introduction to the indelible moments Morales has contributed to the world of dance music. Morales's influence is pervasive, touching classics across various artists and genres. His remix of Alison Limerick's "Where Love Lives (Come On In)" takes the track from merely memorable to unforgettable, instilling it with an added layer of club-ready beats and rhythms. Similarly, his collaborative project, "In De Ghetto" with The Bad Yard Club and Crystal Waters, sets a gold standard for what house music can achieve in terms of storytelling and atmosphere. Another iconic remix is of Basement Jaxx's "Bingo Bango," where Morales's touch turns it into a dancefloor filler of the highest order. His work is not confined to just one genre or one set of voices. With "Needin' U," under the alias The Face and featuring Juliet Roberts, Morales demonstrates his versatile talent in producing dance anthems that defy categorization. His influence even extends to the realm of pop, as exemplified by his remix of the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way," a rendition that gives the boy band classic a dancefloor-friendly makeover. At Party Favorz, we believe that honor and respect are best expressed through action. That's why we are thrilled to pay tribute to David Morales—an unparalleled ...

Things get a bit contentious this week on the podcast, with several episodes prompting strong reactions from Noel and Kate. First up are the comedies, including the premieres of Playing House and Younger, the finale of Veep, and fun episodes of Wrecked and The Carmichael Show. Then we move over to reality, with looks at the return of Terrace House and relaunch of Battle of the Network Stars, an underwhelming The Great British Baking Show, and the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Last up in our week in TV are the genre and drama offerings, including the premiere of GLOW (which Kate perhaps mis-categorized), the finale of iZombie, and new installments of Queen Sugar and Wynonna Earp. Afterward, Allison Shoemaker of Podlander Drunkcast, Debating Doctor Who, Consequence of Sound, and The A.V. After Linda Ronstadt scored a Top 10 hit with Billy Steinberg’s “How Do I Make You” in 1980, he went on to score a series of chart-topping singles co-written with Tom Kelly, including “Like a Virgin” by Madonna, “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper, “Alone” by Heart, "So Emotional" by Whitney Houston, and “Eternal Flame” by the Bangles. Additional Top 10 hits from the Steinberg/Kelly songbook include “In Your Room” by the Bangles, “I Touch Myself” by Divinyls, “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders, and “I Drove All Night,” which was a major international hit three different times, first by Cyndi Lauper, then by Roy Orbison, and, finally, by Celine Dion. After Tom Kelly retired from the music business, Steinberg partnered with Rick Nowels, with whom he won a Grammy for their work on the title track to Celine Dion’s multiplatinum Falling Into You album in 1996. Since the mid-2000s, Billy has written extensively with Josh Alexander, with whom he penned JoJo's Top 5 pop hit "Too Little Too Late" and Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart a Break." Additionally, the pair partnered with songwriter/producer – and previous Songcraft guest - Toby Gad for Nicole Scherzinger's #1 UK chart-topper "Don't Hold Your Breath.” Other artists who’ve contributed to Steinberg’s long list of Billboard charting singles include Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, Susanna Hoffs, Chicago, Bette Midler, Ace of Base, Phil Collins, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, and many others. Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Once a protégé of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs (who signed Thomas after hearing him sing at an open mic night in New York in the mid – 90s), he was the first heartthrob R&B songster on Bad Boy Entertainment. Thomas is best known for his #1 R&B smash “I Wish” from the album So Emotional, which debuted in the Top 20 on Billboard and was a critical and commercial success, selling nearly 2 million copies. When Thomas crooned “I wish I had never met her,” with equal parts pleading and regret, women found his white wine cool vocals and Marvin Gaye meets Nat King Cole sex appeal irresistible, while guys immediately identified with his worldly yet around the way lyricism and spot on relationship observations. With a solid debut —also yielding the windswept hit single “Summer Rain”—Carl Thomas instantly transformed from a Chicago native son singing for his supper into both an in demand lothario and voice of masculine romance for an entire generation. However, it was his indefatigable passion and not industry position or fanfare that beckoned him back to the studio for his new album, Conquer.   It has been a long road back home. In 2004, on the eve of the release of his highly anticipated sophomore project, Let’s Talk About It, Thomas’ brother was murdered in Aurora, Illinois, the Chicago suburb where they grew up. Instead of basking in the glory and glamour of another hit album, a devastated Thomas left his career behind fled abroad and rendered himself incognito in the states—much to the chagrin of Combs. “Puff fought me on that one. But, we were at different points of communication at the time,” he says. Thomas also makes it clear that his eventual departure from the iconic the hip-hop/R&B label had nothing to do with the swirl of rumors that surfaced regarding the situation.
