Deirdre Lovejoy Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Deirdre Lovejoy (DD). In this episode, we chat about her growing up in Indiana, and what made her mom tell her to get into acting. Next, we talk about an insane freak accident that almost took her whole hand off! Naturally I ask her about moving to Brookly after having lived in Manhattan for so long. We touch on her stint on the television show 'Bones', as well as her arc on 'The Blacklist'. Then we dive into one of my all-time favorite shows, 'Raising Dion'. I love this show, so I geek out a little, before we talk about her getting cast in the greatest show of all time, 'The Wire'. Then, we talk about a super rare condition that DD was later diagnosed with, following some really scary events (Stress Related Seizure Disorder). Deirdre shares with me the details of the play she is writing about some of her traumatic experiences (Trauma Nova), and how she plans to put the show on at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in Scotland. We also discuss her other play (Bird Elephant China), which chronicled some unrelated traumatic events. Finally, we end talking about her love for NBA basketball, and her beloved New York Knicks. You can catch DD on the previously mentioned shows, as well as the upcoming seasons of 'Daredevil Born Again', and Diarra From Detroit.

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Fiber art finds a spotlightSandra Brick, a teaching artist at the Textile Center of Minnesota, recommends a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to see Amy Usdin's contemplative fiber arts exhibit, “After All.“The show runs through Feb. 22 in the U.S. Bank Gallery.Sandra says: I think it's really great that Mia is giving fiber art this call-out in this show because, historically, fiber art has been considered a craft, and by having this exhibit at Mia, we're saying that it is an art.Amy's art is an expression of connection and transformation. There's woven layers, knots, found objects and time-composed pieces, both large and small, and many are hanging from the ceiling. So it's a truly immersive experience. You get to walk around the art. I would check it out just to learn and see how simple processes, like weaving, knotting, can be transformed into really contemplative, transformative pieces. A lot of the pieces are very airy, and so you're actually seeing through them. You see how it all blends together and flows into one really great use of the space.— Sandra BrickMultimedia storytelling takes the stagePerformance enthusiast Laurel Podulke-Smith of Rochester follows the work of local artist Jessalyn Finch, who has a short multimedia film debuting this weekend. “Embodied Landscapes” is the creation of Finch, Mary Mailand Schlichting and Laura Sukowatey. The film incorporates dance, large-scale drawing and sculpture. The premiere takes place at the Historic Chateau Theatre in Rochester on Sunday, Jan. 11. Screenings are at 2 and 3:15 p.m., with an artist talk and Q&A in between. Attendees are encouraged to wear cocktail attire and enjoy mocktails while meeting the artists.Surreal sisterhood in ‘Plano'Minneapolis theater maker Caleb Byers recommends “Plano,” presented by Third Space Theater. The play runs Jan. 9–18 at the Alan Page Auditorium at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis.Caleb says he's been anticipating this production since seeing Third Space Theater's original show “Breach” at the Fringe Festival. Caleb describes the play: Will Arbery is something of a magical realist-slash-surrealist playwright. And “Plano” is about three sisters, essentially in a sort of heightened reality and a sort of undisclosed period of time. Time is a little bit strange in “Plano.” They, in a very surreal style, move through their specific problems. There's very snappy, casual, modern dialogue. I'm incredibly excited for these artists in particular to tackle this.— Caleb Byers

Improv acting serves as a freeing space for us, providing a playground to experiment and explore new facets of self-expression and storytelling. We emphasize the transformative and healing power of storytelling, both in terms of personal growth and building a sense of community and empathy. The wildly talented multi-hyphenate Mayumi Yoshida returns to the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to discuss her long-awaited feature film directorial debut, Akashi, which is inspired by Mayumi's own experience of living in the space between cultures. Ten years after moving to Vancouver, struggling visual artist Kana (that's Mayumi) returns to Tokyo to attend the funeral of her beloved grandmother. Arriving in Japan, she rekindles a tentative flame with her bashful ex-boyfriend, Hiro, an aspiring thespian who vanished from her life a decade prior. As Kana digs deeper into her grandmother's past, she uncovers a family secret that prompts her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about love, duty, and belonging.Akashi – which Mayumi wrote, directed, and starred in – has its world premiere this week at the 2025 Vancouver International Film Festival. The feature began its life as a Fringe Festival play in 2016, before evolving into a Storyhive-funded short film in 2017 (the latter for which she earned a slew of awards, including the award for Best Female Director at the 2018 Vancouver Short Film Festival, and the Outstanding Writer Award at the NBCUniversal Short Film Festival). Although it's been a long road to bring Akashi to the screen in its current feature-length incarnation, Mayumi hasn't been idle in the intervening years: between directing short films – including the music video for Different Than Before, which won the SXSW Music Video Jury Award in 2023 – and working as a dialect coach and cultural consultant and advocating for diversity and inclusion in our challenging industry, Mayumi has been fighting to get this film made. This included, in 2021, taking on Telefilm, Canada's major funding provider, for their outdated language requirements that didn't take Canada's purported commitment to diversity and inclusion into consideration. In this riveting conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Mayumi reflects on her journey to this moment, how Akashi changed over the years, and how Akashi changed her as an artist. Send us a textReady to inject some punk spirit into your customer experience? In this episode of the Customer Success Playbook, Adrian Swinscoe joins Roman Trebon to explore the delicate art of reducing friction without losing that vital human touch. From the bustling cultural tapestry of Edinburgh's Fringe Festival to personal tales of rock climbing and postponed trips to Japan, Adrian sets the stage with personality before diving into why not all friction is bad. He reveals why some “effortful” moments between a brand and its customers actually build loyalty, and how removing them in the name of efficiency can backfire spectacularly. If you're looking to refine your customer journey without sterilizing it, this episode serves up the perfect balance of practical wisdom and a punk attitude. In a world obsessed with streamlining every process, this episode is a refreshing reminder that operational efficiency is not always the hero of customer success. Adrian Swinscoe brings a nuanced perspective: friction isn't the bogeyman it's often made out to be. By distinguishing between “good friction” — those meaningful touchpoints that enrich customer relationships — and “bad friction” that truly hinders progress, organizations can avoid the pitfall of a too-easy, yet emotionally barren, experience. His example of a company that saw sign-ups soar but retention dive thanks to over-simplification is a cautionary tale for businesses tempted to sanitize their customer journey too aggressively. The actionable takeaway? Approach your customer journey analysis with deliberate care and use data combined with direct customer feedback to fine-tune that balance. This means digging deep into customer stories and operational metrics to identify where technology should speed things up and where human moments need to be preserved or even amplified. Adrian's advice serves as a critical chapter in your customer success playbook, fueling smarter decisions that respect both business goals and the emotional dynamics that bind customers to your brand.Bonus: His reflections on rock climbing as a meditative, focus-driven hobby provide a clever metaphor for the customer success journey itself—it's about balance, precision, and the right amount of challenge. Now you can interact with us directly by leaving a voice message at https://www.speakpipe.com/CustomerSuccessPlaybookPlease Like, Comment, Share and Subscribe. They range from the mid-1600s to the early 1900s, from outright farce to bittersweet relationships, all short gems to make you laugh, cry, think, or all three. A one-act play is a play that has only one act and is distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One-act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, Cyclops, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. The satyr play was a farcical short work that came after a trilogy of multi-act serious drama plays. A few notable examples of one-act plays emerged before the 19th century including various versions of the Everyman play and works by Moliere and Calderon. One act plays became more common in the 19th century and is now a standard part of repertory theatre and fringe festivals. I learned so much from this conversation not only about comedy but about being yourself, navigating the industry and enjoying yourself while you do it. Chris is one of the few guys where it doesn't matter what show he is on, what the format is, or what venue it is in, if Chris is on the poster you know it will be a phenomenal time! He has 3 different shows in this years Fringe Festival, Off-book, Marv' n Berry, and Crowd Work.  You can get tickets to all three at the rapidfire theatre website (amazing venue) and each one will be worth every dollar you spend on a ticket! Also please follow chris on instagram @thecheeseborger and let him know you enjoyed hearing him on the podcast!

She touches on her extensive experience in the spiritual domain, revealing how these artistic endeavors are intertwined with personal and collective healing.   Drawing from her adventures at the Fringe Festival, Vanessa underscores the importance of embracing imperfection and making bold choices in any creative or life endeavor. She calls attention to the power of presence over polish in performance, emphasizing the emotional and community value of authentic self-expression.   Vanessa extends these lessons to everyday life and business, encouraging listeners to allow creativity to lead and rejecting the constraints of societal expectations. Through anecdotes and reflections, she highlights how creativity serves as both a spiritual and personal outlet for growth and authenticity. On today's podcast, we welcome several incredible guests from the Coffee Tonk team: Jill Engelstad, the playwright; Steve Hydeen, the director of Coffee Tonk and Program Director & Chief Admin Director of the 402 Arts Collective; Brigette Chizek, who plays dual roles as singer Jonelle and bar owner Olivia; and Mark Drendt, who portrays the lead character, Daniel West. This production is truly a collaborative effort. The 402 Arts Collective provided the acting talent, and the River City Shakers bring energy and movement through dance. The Great Plains Theatre Commons supported playwright Jill Engelstad in developing the script. And, of course, the Omaha Fringe Festival and Shelterbelt Theatre provide the platform and venue to bring it all to life. All Omaha-based. All incredible creatives. All working together to tell new and meaningful stories. Tune in to the podcast to hear behind-the-scenes insights and enjoy a taste of Ben Danaher's inspiring music featured in Coffee Tonk. The Omaha Fringe Festival runs August 8–10, 2025, featuring 20 original productions, each no longer than one hour. Performances will take place at three venues: Shelterbelt Theatre, two stages at the UNO Theatre, and the Blackstone Theater. Don't miss this celebration of new work, local artistry, and collaborative storytelling! One-Act Play Collections - Book 14, Part 1 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 14 Overview: Here, in our 14th collection, are 10 One-Act Plays for your enjoyment. They range from the farm to the courtroom to the palace throne room; from the time of suffragettes to the (at the time) far distant future of 1999; and two of them have the word "sweet" in their titles. Short gems to make you laugh, cry, think, or all three. Local storyteller and stand-up comic Jason Schommer stops by to tell us all about his new Fringe Festival show 50: A Totally Rad Comedy About the Gnarly Reckoning of a GenXer. Jason is quick-witted and very funny. He made me laugh really hard and you will likely too. Enjoy!
