A lot of people have a lot of questions or a lot to say about raising capital. Not all of them know what they're talking about. Bill Andrews does. Bill Andrews holds a PhD from the Terry School of Business (University of Georgia) and an MBA in Marketing from Thunderbird International University. He's the former chair of the Department of Management and International Business at Stetson University where he continues to teach. But that's just the beginning. He's a rock solid follower of Christ, a mentor to many students over many years, an investor, and the cofounder of the Hatter Angel Network. He's been married to his wife Carol for 45 years, has 3 daughters and, according to him, 4.5 grandchildren. And, as if that's not enough, Bill is one of my best friends for nearly 50 years. This episode covers a lot of ground so buckle up and learn! If you've enjoyed the Business as Mission podcast, please subscribe and give us a rating wherever you listen. It's a claim that is taken almost as an unassailable truth by a huge number of news media outlets around the world: that some 33,000 people died in Gaza, and that two-thirds of them are women and children. While the source of that claim is Hamas, and its "Gaza Ministry of Health," which doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants, or those killed by Israel or by errant Palestinian rockets, there is an even more fundamental way to recognize the data is unreliable: by statistics. Abraham Wyner, a professor of Statistics and Data Science at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, recently penned a report where he pointed out that Hamas' casualty numbers don't add up, just from a statistical perspective, rendering them extraordinarily unlikely to be true. Professor Wyner joins us as a guest to walk us through his research showing how statistics have shown Hamas' claims to be propaganda. I reached out to Dr. Robert "Tino" Sonora, clinical professor of finance and adjunct professor of economics at the University of Montana and one of my oldest friends, because I had just listened to a “Planet Critical” podcast that posed the question, in countries that print their own currency, can we make the electrification transition faster. The premise of this question uses Modern Monetary Theory, which I cannot claim to understand, but in my simplistic mind I learned that we may want to question the politic argument that our federal government must balance the budget and that our $34 trillion dollar debt is a problem. The simplistic analogy that equates the federal economic budget to a family's budget and debt is bogus. Having a balanced family budget and little debt is important but on a nation state scale, and especially in a country that prints its own currency, it is not crucial. Look at the fact that the United States has carried a debt since 1775 in order to pay for the American Revolution. So this lesson in economics may just create more questions than it answers but I am so thankful to Tino for expanding our understanding of one aspect of the transition from a fossil fuel based economy to a renewable based economy. TODAY'S GUEST Greg Hoffman is Nike's former Chief Marketing Officer, a global brand leader, advisor, and speaker, and the author of Emotion by Design: Creative Leadership Lessons From a Life at Nike. In his book, Greg shares lessons and stories on the power of creativity drawn from almost three decades of experience within the company. It's a celebration of creativity and a call-to-arms for brand-builders to rediscover the human element that makes consumer bonds. EPISODE SUMMARY In this conversation we talk about: How he developed his love of art and design sensibility. Growing up in branding inside of Nike, until eventually becoming Chief Marketing Officer. The importance of emotion and storytelling. On authenticity, and why chasing cool is a bad idea. On creativity as a team sport. And on the importance of courage. We talked in mid-June 2022 and I was looking forward to talking to Greg because Nike clearly is doing some amazing work around branding and brand values, and is able again and again to create authentic connections at scale. I'm a latecomer to the world of branding. For much of my life, I was an avid product person and saw the brand as an afterthought. It's only in recent years that I understood the extent to which our lives, our thinking, and our decisions are driven by the stories we tell, and the emotional associations we make. The art of doing that well is branding. And it can be used for good or evil, and is just as important in non-profits and political organizations as it is in business. I really enjoyed the stories of some of Nike's iconic campaigns. Digging in to find compelling ways to tell stories that illustrate and support your values in a real way, feels like a very human way of crafting a brand that people can believe in. I've counted the episodes that we already have recorded and edited for you, and it's currently eight episodes. There are famous designers like Vicki Tan and John Maeda, authors like Susie Wise and Ashish Goel, and the most connected man in the world, Chris Dancy, among them. We release conversations weekly with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, entrepreneurs, and activists who are working to change our world for the better. So follow this podcast on your favorite podcast app, or head over to RemakePod.org to subscribe. And now, let's jump right in with Greg Hoffman. I have no idea how so many of you could put yourself in a position where you view everything in a negative light. I'm really hoping that this podcast is the podcast that inspires you to implement the five steps I laid out in the episode and put them to use to change your perspective, create a winner's mindset, and better your reality. ► Get the full show notes for all resources from today's episode: https://passionstruck.com/does-the-concept-of-free-will-really-exist/ -► Want the transcript: https://johnrmiles.com/5-steps-to-change-your-perception/ --► Prefer to watch this episode: https://youtu.be/_sLYC8B68k4 --► Subscribe to Our YouTube Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the Passion Struck Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 Thank you, Dry Farm Wines and Policygenius, For Your Support Dry Farm Wines have No Chemical Additives for Aroma, Color, Flavor, or Texture Enhancement. Talking “Presence” with a group of executives & business Leaders at the McCombs School of Business (University of Texas at Austin). Sometimes the best thing a Leader can do for their Team, is be their oak tree. Times of chaos, confusion and challenge can bring out panic in our Teams. Joseph shares his journey of learning from a young age what it meant to have “presence” by watching the courageous way his mother guided their family during her fight against cancer. Years later he would apply what he observed as he was fighting a determined enemy overseas. He also shares that a “Collective Presence” can be incredibly important to the families of your company/Team. When times are falling apart at home, it is not only comforting but confidence inducing to have a Team that you know will be there, even outside of work. We all have reference points that we can use in our lives to hone in our Leader Presence and as we develop it, we find that it's about one's calm that brings action to your organization. In trying times, give your Team space to think clearly and sometimes the best thing we can do is stand fast.

How much is the value of time really worth? Carl Sandburg said, “Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent.” In this Momentum Friday episode from the Passion Struck podcast, I tackle the value of time. I examine this by studying wisdom from the stoics on the topic and using ten of their mantras for managing time. Members of the Passion Struck community have asked questions like, "Why do I always feel there aren't there enough hours in the day to do the things I want to do?", "Why do I keep procrastinating?", "Why do I waste my time doing frivolous things?", Why am I constantly dissatisfied with where my life is going?" and many other similar questions. This episode is dedicated to answering them. This episode tackles how to figure out what your time is worth and use that information to spend your time more effectively. Learning how to get the most out of your time starts with knowing exactly what your time is worth. --► Get the full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/loneliness-is-not-a-joke-here-are-10-ways-to-deal-with-it/ --► Subscribe to My YouTube Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. Over the past few months, the growing chronic loneliness epidemic has come up repeatedly in my interviews on the Passion Struck podcast. Given its prevalence, I decided to devote this episode to addressing its significance. Loneliness is a human sentiment that is complicated and unique to every person. Because there isn't a known common cause, the consequences of loneliness and its prevention can vary dramatically. Anne Hathaway did a great job articulating her feelings about loneliness in the following quote, "Loneliness is my least favorite thing about life. The thing that I'm most worried about is just being alone without anybody to care for or someone who will care for me." Her quote brings to life how differently we each experience loneliness. For example, a lonely elderly person who struggles to have people to talk to has different needs than a college student leaving home for the first time. In today's Momentum Friday Passion Struck podcast episode, I dive into what it means to be "lonely," as well as the causes and consequences of loneliness, and provide ten different ways to deal with loneliness. --► Get the full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/loneliness-is-not-a-joke-here-are-10-ways-to-deal-with-it/ --► Subscribe to My Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. John R. Miles - Eight ways to stop making excuses to unlock an intentional life. Brought to you by Indeed. Receive a $75 credit at: https://www.indeed.com/passionstruck. People often ask me, 'How does making excuses impact intentional positive change in life?' In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” As cruel as that sounds, Franklin's words are closer to reality than we think. Until we stop making excuses, we will encounter consequences to living our lives with focus, purpose, and intentionality. Trust me when I say, making excuses is one of the worst things you can do if you desire to become your best self. --► Get the full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/how-to-stop-making-excuses/ --► Subscribe to My Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. This morning we're driving to the intersection of energy, commodities and risk with University of Houston, C.T. Bauer College of Business Professor, Craig Pirrong. Pirrong's extensive research focuses on the economics of commodity markets, the relation between market fundamentals and commodity price dynamics — and the implications of this relation for the pricing of commodity derivatives. If you're interested in hearing two economists discuss Wednesday's CFTC roundtable discussion on the FTX proposal, you won't want to miss this episode. This week's headlines aside, we're tapping into Craig's expertise for his take on what tools and technologies could push us toward more secure and smarter markets.
