Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was first described in 1935 by Irving Freiler Stein and Michael Leo Leventhal at the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Since that time, it has gone through several name changes: Stein-Leventhal syndrome, PCOD, and currently PCOS. Nonetheless, proponents and scientists are still recommending yet another name change for this syndrome, one that better incorporates the multi-metabolic dysregulation that it incorporates. PCOS is not simply a gynecological issue. It is a metabolic issue with implications for adverse obstetrical outcomes. In this episode we will review 2 recent publications, one from July 2024 and the other from August 27th, 2024. These two studies, in two separate journals, each a month apart, validate what others have previously reported: PCOS doesn't just affect gynecological health but it also impacts obstetrical health. She is a multi-award-winning physician with dual board certification in OB-GYN and Integrative Medicine. She is also a recognized expert on PCOS. PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a syndrome of inflammation, imbalanced hormones, and insulin resistance. It is the most common female endocrine disorder and the leading cause of infertility in women. This episode is the first part of a two-part series with Dr. Gersh. We dive into PCOS, discuss its foundation, and explain how we are often genetically predisposed to it. We discuss the symptoms and how they can predispose us to autoimmunity and endometrial cancer. We speak about estrogen, the role it plays in PCOS, and how it systemically impacts the ovaries, pancreas, liver, and intestines. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in which the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgens, male sex hormones that are usually present in women in small amounts. The name polycystic ovary syndrome describes the numerous small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) that form in the ovaries. However, some women with this disorder do not have cysts, while some women without the disorder do develop cysts. In this episode we're in conversation with Tallene and her husband Sirak: Tallene is a PCOS Weight Loss registered dietitian and a strong believer of the fact that you don't just have to live with PCOS, because you can thrive with PCOS. She was diagnosed at age 18, and was left worried and confused without much information or guidance from her practitioner. Unsatisfied with the generally accepted belief that birth control is the only way to manage a PCOS diagnosis , Tallene decided to look for alternative options. Sirak is a PCOS Personal Trainer and a strong supporter of women struggling with PCOS.
