Spring finally feels like it has arrived! We have moved away from the mucky middle and broken through to the wonderful spring season we have been waiting for.Only, now, many of us find ourselves trying to hurry spring along to summer.Spring naturally brings energy. In Ayurveda - and nature itself - spring is a time of renewal and growth. We go from the heavy, inward energy of winter to a bursting outward “do more, move more” energy. That's beautiful … but it can also be overwhelming. This time of year, I often hear my clients say: “I am way behind this year … I feel like I have to catch up … There's so much to do, and I don't know where to start.”So, why are we feeling hurried or rushed? Where are we going? Where else do we need to be other than right here in this present moment? There is a benefit to each stage (and season) that we go through in every aspect of our lifeToday, on Episode #152 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, I'm sharing my top 5 simple ways to stay mindful in the spring rush.Start with your breathDo one thing at a timeUse nature as a reminder to slow downSet realistic spring expectations (and lower your expectations)Bookend your day with gratitude and calmInstead of rushing spring, try being in the moment of spring. Being engaged in spring. Rushing through spring without awareness can lead to burnout, frustration and even being disconnected from the joy of this season.Love,Lorrie xoxoxLoving the show? Send us a textGary Meskil is the founding member and driving force behind Pro-Pain, a prominent hardcore metal band that emerged in the early 1990s. Born in New York City, Meskil's early exposure to the thriving punk and hardcore scenes of the 1980s heavily influenced his musical direction. Prior to forming Pro-Pain, Meskil was a bassist for the hardcore band Crumbsuckers, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the heavy music genre. In 1991, Meskil founded Pro-Pain with the intention of creating a band that combined the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk with the heavy riffing and technical proficiency of metal. Pro-Pain's debut album, Foul Taste of Freedom, released in 1992, was a critical and commercial success within the underground music scene. The album's raw energy, socially conscious lyrics, and Meskil's powerful vocal delivery set the tone for the band's future releases.Pro-Pain quickly gained a reputation for their relentless touring schedule and ferocious live performances. Meskil's leadership and vision were central to the band's success, guiding them through numerous lineup changes while maintaining their core sound and message. The band's music often tackles themes of political and social issues, personal struggles, and resilience, resonating deeply with fans who appreciate the blend of hardcore urgency and metal precision.Over the years, Pro-Pain released a series of influential albums, including The Truth Hurts (1994), Contents Under Pressure (1996), and Act of God (1999). Each release showcased Meskil's growth as a songwriter and his ability to adapt to the evolving landscape of heavy music. The band's sound incorporated elements of groove metal, thrash, and even hints of melodic death metal, ensuring their relevance in a genre known for its rapid shifts and trends.Despite the challenges faced by many bands in maintaining longevity, Pro-Pain has remained a consistent force in the metal and hardcore scenes. Meskil's dedication to his craft and his refusal to compromise the band's integrity have earned Pro-Pain a loyal and passionate fanbase worldwide. The band's relentless work ethic and commitment to their message have solidified their place as one of the enduring acts in heavy music. In 2017, Meskil faced a significant personal challenge when he was brutally attacked and robbed in Belgium while on tour. The incident left him with serious injuries, but his resilience and determination shone through as he recovered and returned to the stage. This episode further highlighted Meskil's unwavering dedication to Pro-Pain and his indomitable spirit.Gary Meskil's impact on the metal and hardcore scenes through Pro-Pain iwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Some albums are deserving of the term 'gamechanger' and here's a massive one from 1994. The Prodigy's second album 'Music For The Jilted Generation' introduced so many people to dance music who might not previously have given it a second thought so we were very excited to do an episode on it. So excited in fact that we brought a guest in to help us out so huge thanks to Cliff Barnes from the Devil Times Five Horror Movie Podcast who is a Prodigy uber-fan as well with loads of insights. Among us we also talk about other acts and albums from the time like Downset, Killing Joke and Julian Cope. Oh and the Vengaboys of course but presumably that goes without saying. We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! And as always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

Now here's a band I used to listen to *a lot* in my younger years. Downset at the bottom! On June 3rd, 2022 we spoke with Downset's Rogelio Lozano about the new album 'Maintain', and the life of musicians with a day job. https://youtu.be/G38FvUp94WI
This is a great example of why the Scars and Guitars podcast exists because Rogelio covers a heap of territory other shows will never explore. He discusses the group's new album, Maintain, which is the catalyst for the chat, but it's his comments on many of the social issues affecting the United States such as race and identity, the band's influence on Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit; and Rogelio's crucial role in bringing heavy metal to the rap and hip hop audience which make this conversation one of the finest conversations broadcast on the show.

While many bands lay claim to pioneering certain trends and genres, seldom do the facts match up to the story. Not so the case with Los Angeles hardcore outfit downset., who burst from the blocks in 1989, combining hardcore with rap, funk and metal to set the wheels in motion for a new crossover genre of music that has integrated itself into the music scene on a global scale. To be technically correct, the band started as Social Justice in 1989 as a predominantly hardcore act, releasing their debut album Unity Is Strength that year before changing their name to downset. In 1992, ushering in a new lineup and releasing their first EP Our Suffocation the following year.It was during this transition that the genesis for their groundbreaking venture into other musical genres began. After a sustained period of success downset disbanded in 2009 before returning with the album One Blood in 2014.After another period of inactivity, downset. Announced earlier this year that they had signed to Nuclear Blast Records and would be releasing a new album titled Maintain, which came out on June 10.Guitarist Rogelio Lozano joined HEAVY to fill in the gaps and tell us why the music world needs downset. now more than ever, beginning with just how the band buried their demons well enough to start afresh."I took some time off from Powerflow and that's when Ray (Oropeza, vocals) got in touch with me,” he began. “We hadn't spoken in quite a long time - I would say ten years - and we had some issues that we needed to... bury some hatchets and get rid of some old resentment and be friends again. Within those conversations Downset. came up and we decided to give it another shot. That was 2020. Within 2020 and now we started from scratch. We recorded a demo, our manager shopped it - this is through the pandemic - got the record deal last Summer and then went into pre-production within that year and recorded and tracked it March then mixed it and did all the vocals in June and here we are now. It took two years. It was two years in the making from the very first idea of actually doing album number six until today and now it's going to be released. If you have asked me two years ago if I was gonna do another Downset. album... not in a million years. But it's crazy. That old saying, never say never... Never say never, man. I said never a few times and next thing you know everything just started to fall into place. It's strange how it works but even the far fetched things were just happening. Everything was just... everything that could happen smoothly went right."In the full interview Rogelio talks in greater detail about reforming the band, their new album Maintain and what to expect, signing with Nuclear Blast and what it means for the band, the early days of downset. and how they shaped their sound, how it fits in with the modern music industry, re-releasing their two original demo tracks Anger/Ritual and About Ta Blast, the controversy that surrounded the initial release of Anger/Ritual, future plans and more.

"Anger! Hostility towards the opposition!" Antony of Egypt, once known as Kalki, and now also known as Kikwaakew, Inked Eyes & Professor X (of Mutant Akademy), was born in Toronto on the 18th of September 1982. As a child Antony always had a way with words, and after performing his first live hip-hop show in 1992 (A cover of "Jump Around" by House of Pain) and entering the graffiti scene the same year in Quebec city, this finally blossomed into a musical career in 1994 when he started rapping both in English and French, influenced by various genres & artists from both polar opposites like KRS-ONE, Jeru the Damaja, IAM, Fonky Family, Tupac, Nas, CNN, Mobb Deep, Rage Against the Machine, Downset, Bad Religion, No Use For a Name & many others. He was soon praised among his peers in Quebec City for his unique brand of gritty yet socially conscious raps. However, as a teenager he ran into a lot of the stereotypical problems that people have come to expect from rappers due to some negative influences, and strayed from the path he had first begun to tread. Around 1999 however, he discovered the Gravediggaz album "The Pick, the Sickle & the Shovel" which put everything back into perspective for him and deeply affected his art. He also started making music with his close friend Ali Dahesh, and together they recorded over 50 tracks which were published nearly a decade later as Antony of Egypt's first official album, "In the Beginning", originally titled "Conscious Revolution".
