A spark of madness is often the first step toward creation. On today's episode, we welcome Bojan Dulabic, a passionate Vancouver-based filmmaker who pulled off a small miracle—he made a full-length zombie movie for just $5,000. But this isn't just a story of budgeting brilliance; it's a tale of relentless passion, artistic vision, and the kind of self-taught wisdom you can't get in film school.Born in Bosnia, raised in Germany and Croatia, and finally settled in Canada, Bojan Dulabic's journey into filmmaking is stitched together by war, displacement, and a child's fascination with VHS tapes in his mother's shop. His early life sounds like something out of a global coming-of-age novel. And perhaps that nomadic upbringing seeded in him a gift for observation—a key trait in any great storyteller. When he finally turned his teenage creativity into a film project in high school, something clicked. Not just the shutter on a camera, but the internal compass of a man who knew he had to follow the path of cinema, even if it meant doing it on his own terms. This wasn't a journey paved in gold. His first feature, shot for $4,000, was a comedy that taught him the ropes. His follow-up? A feature-length zombie film titled Project Eugenics. What could have been a cliché genre dive instead becomes a thoughtful narrative on misinformation, the chaos of modern life, and yes—zombies as metaphors. “To me, a zombie flick... it's not about the zombies. It's always about something else,” Bojan reflects. In his hands, the walking dead become symbols of mass confusion, manipulation, and the blurred lines of truth in our hyper-connected world. There is a playful seriousness to Bojan's philosophy. He reveres Romero and admires Rodriguez, but he walks his own road. Like Alan Watts would muse about the dancer and the dance, Bojan seems less concerned with final outcomes and more with being in the creative flow—tripping over obstacles and finding meaning in the madness. He shares stories of juggling a wedding, a tight shooting schedule, and DIY visual effects like a magician with duct tape. His secret? A mindset that embraces “safe confusion”—a term borrowed from Tarantino—that invites the audience into mystery without losing them. What's more, Bojan brings a rare humility to the table. He speaks about his cast and crew with deep respect, understanding that low-budget filmmaking doesn't give you the license to burn out others for your dream. His actors often worked just a few days, each scene scheduled with precision. His respect for time, energy, and goodwill may be the real reason his film came together. For him, filmmaking is not just a creative act but a spiritual contract—with himself, with his collaborators, and with the audience. This podcast isn't just a technical breakdown of low-budget indie cinema. It's a spiritual blueprint for artists who feel the fire but lack the funds. Bojan's approach is radical because it's so simple: take stock of what you have, and build from there. Whether it's stock footage, free VFX plugins, or your friend's living room—use it. More importantly, finish it. Don't wait for permission. Make your movie now.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
Joel Haver is a Canadian indie filmmaker and YouTuber known for his experimental film projects. In an ambitious move last year, he set out to create 12 films in 12 months. What might have motivated such a demanding challenge? And how could this rapid production schedule influence the perceived quality of the films? With modern technology drastically lowering the barrier to entry for aspiring filmmakers, how much do tools versus talent truly impact the final product? The Flick Lab decided to explore this question by watching two of Haver's films. Note: This episode was recorded in November 2024, prior to Haver having released all of his films on his Youtube channel, which explains our skepticism of him being able to complete the challenge on time. Mr. Haver got the last laugh here. Films covered in this episode: The Text (2024) Anyone Else But Me (2024) Hosted by Karri Ojala and Henrik Telkki. Edited by Karri Ojala. The Flick Lab theme tune performed by Nick Grivell.

First up, we sit down with veteran producer Alex Saks, to dig into why even our most successful independent filmmakers are struggling to make a living right now. Indie filmmakers are always told to keep it small—one location, minimal cast, limited scope. But what if you flipped that thinking on its head? Instead of shrinking your vision, expand it. More locations. A bigger cast. A film that feels massive without breaking the bank. The truth is, playing big doesn't have to mean spending big. Strategic planning, creative problem-solving, and leveraging resources differently can give your indie film the scope of a blockbuster without the budget of one. In this episode, I break down how you can shatter the “small indie film” mold and make something truly ambitious without losing control of your costs.Let's redefine what's possible for indie filmmakers. Ready to go big? Let's talk in the comments!Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! Yours truly,Phil SvitekFilmmaker, author, podcaster & 360 Creative Coachhttp://philsvitek.com
On today's episode, we welcome Curt Wiser, a writer and director whose journey proves that the path to making movies doesn't require a New York or Los Angeles zip code. From the sunny shores of Florida, Curt has forged his own cinematic destiny, creating the suspenseful and thought-provoking film Cam Girl—a story of isolation, control, and survival. But as with any journey worth taking, his was not without its trials.Filmmaking is often romanticized as an artistic dreamland, yet reality demands perseverance. Curt Wiser spent years writing scripts, refining his vision, and navigating the labyrinth of independent film production. He understood a fundamental truth—great stories come from deep within the storyteller. The seed of Cam Girl was planted not in a boardroom or a Hollywood studio, but in the quiet hours of personal discipline, writing at night after long workdays, shaping ideas into something tangible. He described his creative process as a structured yet fluid endeavor, saying, “I outline thoroughly, but when I start writing, it just pours out. I wrote the first draft of Cam Girl in 14 days.” Passion fuels discipline, and discipline, in turn, fuels success. His film, Cam Girl, takes a simple yet gripping premise—a woman working as a webcam performer who finds herself taken hostage—and transforms it into an intense, psychological unraveling. With one primary location and a tight cast, it is proof that compelling storytelling doesn't require a blockbuster budget. The industry often pressures filmmakers to define themselves within a niche, to follow trends rather than intuition. But Curt remains steadfast in his desire to explore diverse narratives, aware that Hollywood loves to box artists in, but true creators resist those constraints.Challenges are inevitable in both life and filmmaking, and Curt has encountered his fair share. Whether it was dealing with malfunctioning equipment, shifting schedules, or the ever-present financial constraints of independent cinema, he never allowed these obstacles to derail his vision. He understands that setbacks are not roadblocks, but rather, unexpected plot twists in the grand narrative of creation. “Filmmaking is like solving a puzzle while the pieces keep changing,” he mused. The lesson? You don't control the waves, but you learn how to ride them.Independent filmmaking is a test of patience, resilience, and the ability to pivot when necessary. Distribution, marketing, and audience reception all present their own set of challenges, but Curt embraces the uncertainty, knowing that each project is a stepping stone to the next.Cam Girl has found its way to audiences through Amazon and other platforms, an accomplishment that many filmmakers never reach. His approach to networking, to putting work out into the world, proves a vital point: persistence, not perfection, is what leads to opportunity.Filmmakers, writers, and creatives alike can take inspiration from Curt's journey. The industry is a maze, but the way through it is to keep moving. Too many aspiring artists get caught in the paralysis of waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect budget, the perfect conditions. But perfection is an illusion. Start where you are. Use what you have. Tell your story anyway.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

The independent film landscape has changed drastically in throughout the years, creating new opportunities, as well as new challenges for indie filmmakers. In this episode, Big Apple Film Festival Podcast host JONATHAN LIPP (BAFF Founder/Director) chats with filmmaker/actor/producer Michael McGlone on how the industry has changed in the last thirty years, opportunities available today for aspiring filmmakers, as well as enlightening perspectives for emerging filmmakers, artists and entrepreneurs. MICHAEL MCGLONE attended the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, wherefrom, a year later, in his words he "self-graduated." Not long after, through an ad in the paper Backstage, he landed the role that would mark the beginning of his career as an actor. That role was the beloved Patrick McMullen, the excessively moral and excessively conflicted youngest brother in the Sundance Festival Grand Jury Prize Winning film The Brothers McMullen, the directorial debut of filmmaker Edward Burns. Following this success, McGlone would go on to star in She's the One alongside Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Edward Burns, Amanda Peet and John Mahoney. This was followed by numerous critically acclaimed roles in films such as The Bones Collector co-starring with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, HBO's Subway Stories, Hardball co-starring with Keanu Reeves and many more. As prolific in television, McGlone's numerous recurring roles include the fan favorite Detective Szymanski on Person of Interest, Bobby McKeen in Starz' dramatic series Crash, NCIS Hawaii and SpikeTV's The Kill Point. In a return to the screen with Eddie Burns you can also see him in their third feature film together, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, in which McGlone plays the fiery Quinn Fitzgerald... Also a writer, director, producer, musician and performer McGlone's life is often full with work on simultaneous projects. Whether his award winning Kenny The Gun, his various poetry and novels, stand-up comedy or Music, McGlone has always pursued the most abundant expression of his multi-talents.
Visual effects have emerged as essential in filmmaking and have transformed storytelling and creativity in the film industry with its diverse digital techniques. However, the high cost of VFX tools often leaves independent filmmakers and content creators working with modest budgets struggling to compete with larger productions Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a Text Message.Rob Marby and I discuss filmmaking and his bucket list project, The Legend of El Chupacabra.*****Rob Mabry was born on November 22, 1966, in San Antonio, Texas. He spent the better part of his youth in Bavaria (Germany), where his parents both worked for the US government. He developed a love of movies at an early age through countless hours spent at Sunday matinees on the tiny Air Force base in Bad Aibling, Germany where he lived. His father owned an 8mm movie camera and often enlisted his son in home movie projects. The spark was lit. Mabry spent his formative years indulging his passion for storytelling. He developed his own comic books, wrote plays for his friend's to perform and when his dad was feeling generous; he borrowed the 8mm movie camera and experimented making movies. In the eighties, Mabry enlisted in the US Army and joined a public affairs unit as a military journalist. While highly regarded as a writer, he found the life of a soldier to be rigid and ill-suited to his non-conformist attitude. Eventually, he and the Army would part ways. In his twenties, Mabry pursued a career as a screenwriter. He wrote a number of spec scripts that garnered limited attention. Living in Atlanta and outside the Hollywood system, prospects were dim and he resolved to focus on a career that would support his family. In 2017, Mabry signed up for the 48-Hour Film Project in San Antonio, a film race to write, shoot, edit and deliver a 4-7 minute short film in just two days. He would go on to compete in a dozen more “48s” and complete over twenty short films ranging in length from three to thirty minutes, but the job wasn't finished.Although his short films were recognized in multiple film festivals, earning laurels and awards along the way, the dream of making a feature-length film still burned. Emerging from the fog of COVID, Mabry resolved to make the dream a reality and spent the next six months developing the script for his first feature film, “The Legend of El Chupacabra.” (The Movie is now available on Tubi.)The horror-comedy was financed through crowdfunding, personal funds and support from friends and family. Filming was done mostly on the weekends in the fall of 2022 and a heavy load of post-production work and visual effects took up most of 2023. The film had its local premiere in October of 2023 and debuted on DVD/Blu-ray on May 10, 2024. The Legend of El Chupacabra will hit streaming platforms in the Summer of 2024. Mabry believes that there is a lesson in his journey to become a feature film writer/director. He frequently shares his adage that “It is never too late to make your first movie. It is never too late to live out your dream.” Website: https://www.chupacabramovie.com/*****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comThis episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/-gCtLb85ceMFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comHave a question for our producer Rich Zei contact him at rich.zei@thirdearaudio.comIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast SuziTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcastSupport the Show.
