In March, the Ronald Reagan Institute published its third annual National Security Innovation Base (NSIB) Report Card, a scorecard that uses 10 indicators such as 'Manufacturing Capacity and Industrial Base' and 'Innovation Capital' to measure the effectiveness and resilience of the U.S. defense innovation base. Join Rachel Hoff, Policy Director at the Reagan Institute, and Eric Snelgrove, CEO of Revere Federal Strategies, as they discuss how the scorecard is produced and indicators are chosen, why the private sector received higher grades than the government in key areas, which indicators are most important to keep an eye on, and how the NSIB can use streamlined talent pipelines and an "unmanned weapons systems-as-a-service" contract vehicle to improve its scores for next year. The Reagan Institute: https://www.reaganfoundation.org/reagan-institute2025 NSIB Report Card: https://www.reaganfoundation.org/cms/assets/1741105896-nsib-2025-feb26-web-1.pdfTo receive updates about the NDIA Emerging Technologies for Defense Conference and Exhibition on August 27-29, 2025 at the Washington D.C. Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.  This week we journey into the unknown with innovation researcher Nathan Furr and entrepreneur Susannah Furr, who navigate us through the fear and stress of uncertainty to find the creative opportunity on the other side. Nathan Furr is a professor of strategy and innovation at INSEAD in Paris and an expert in the fields of innovation and technology strategy. His bestselling books include The Innovator's Method and Innovation Capital. Published regularly in Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, Forbes and Inc., he is an Innosight Fellow, has been nominated for the Thinkers50 Innovation Award, and works with leading companies including Google, Microsoft, Citi, ING, and Philips. Susannah Harmon Furr is an entrepreneur, designer, art historian, and contrarian. Her clothing line was inspired by her research into the intricate embroidery Dutch women painstakingly rendered on their plain uniforms—details often invisible to all but the wearer—and its significance in their daily lives. She has also founded a design services firm. Nathan and Susannah are the parents of four teenagers.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…  individuals who want to break away from the stresses of uncertainty to overcome their fears, adopt innovations, imagine the possibilities, set out on new adventures, and ultimately, embrace change.   TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… we are hard-wired to love the idea of control, but we have to accept that some things are outside of our control. For those who shy away from willingly bringing uncertainty into their lives, they recommend implementing “balancers” to create a sense of familiarity in your day to day life. The sense of security that comes from having a few routine choices - like standard lunches or outfits - can help keep us relatively stable when uncertainty creeps into our lives (or when we are ready to introduce it ourselves!).   WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… Nathan and Susannah have a starry-eyed optimism for the future, not because they know that everything is going to work out in the end, but because they know they will be able to handle it when something inevitably goes wrong. So they choose to imagine the best possible outcome for the future, while simultaneously creating a plan to manage their risk tolerance and address the worst case scenario.     Running time: 25:52 Subscribe on iTunes     Find Tiffani on social: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Instagram   Find Nathan & Susannah on social: Website Twitter LinkedIn Google Scholar     Nathan and Susannah's Book: The Upside of Uncertainty

Startups have changed the world. In the United States, many startups, such as Tesla, Apple, and Amazon, have become household names. The economic value of startups has doubled since 1992 and is projected to double again in the next fifteen years. For decades, the hot center of this phenomenon has been Silicon Valley. This is changing fast. Thanks to technology, startups are now taking root everywhere, from Delhi to Detroit to Nairobi to São Paulo. Yet despite this globalization of startup activity, our knowledge of how to build successful startups is still drawn primarily from Silicon Valley. As venture capitalist Alexandre Lazarow shows in this insightful and instructive book, this Silicon Valley “gospel” is due for a refresh—and it comes from what he calls the “frontier,” the growing constellation of startup ecosystems, outside of the Valley and other major economic centers, that now stretches across the globe. The frontier is a truly different world where startups often must cope with political or economic instability and lack of infrastructure, and where there might be little or no access to angel investors, venture capitalists, or experienced employee pools.Under such conditions, entrepreneurs must be creators who build industries rather than disruptors who change them because there are few existing businesses to disrupt. The companies they create must be global from birth because local markets are too small. They focus on resiliency and sustainability rather than unicorn-style growth at any cost. With rich and wide-ranging stories of frontier innovators from around the world, Out-Innovate is the new playbook for innovation—wherever it has the potential to happen.Support the show (http://goimpact.today)

Jeff Dyer is a professor of strategy at BYU and the Wharton School. He and two co-authors, Nathan Furr and Curtis Lefrandt, have written the book, Innovation Capital, which explores how to lead innovation work, whether for companies or for projects, in situations where the innovator lacks the formal “power” to cause the needed steps. What do you do, for instance, if your boss doesn’t see the need for innovation? How do you get people to want to join your project?  In our conversation, Jeff says part of the answer is what he calls the human capital skill of forward thinking -- which he likens to mental time travel, envisioning what people in your industry will want next, and what technology is coming that will enable new things to happen. He talks about spotting opportunities -- being a “scout” and learning to see patterns. He talks about getting other people to want to help, so that you can amass the needed resources. And he talks about building an innovation reputation that will continue to attract people to your efforts over time.

Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: When I started this podcast I created the Product Mastery Roadmap that describes the path from product manager to product master. I’ve used it as a guide to the topics we explore here. Recently I updated it to better reflect the journey I have seen many of you and your colleagues taking towards mastery, focusing more narrowly on what is most important so you can progress more quickly. A pivotal element of this journey is the influence you have in your organization — influence to get others to support your ideas. Recently a fellow listener expressed this well when I asked him about how this podcast has helped him. He told me that “I have helped create a monster” because he now gets everything he asks his company for — that he has virtually zero barriers and almost no questions asked. That is influence. My guest has a different term for it, which he calls Innovation Capital. It is a concept he deeply explores in the book he co-authored by the same title. Innovation Capital is what you can build up over time that makes it easy for others to support you when you want to do something new. It consists of three components: Who you are,Who you know, andWhat you’ve done. In a sense, this is a personal brand building and is seen in the best innovators in all size organizations. For Everyday Innovators on the path to being a product master, this is one of the most important discussions you need to hear. I hope you enjoy it.

Jeff Dyer (Ph.D UCLA) is the Horace Beesley professor of strategy at Brigham Young University as well as professor of strategy at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Before becoming a professor he spent five years as a consultant and manager at Bain & Company, a top management consultancy. His book “The Innovator’s DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators”, with Harvard professor Clayton Christensen and MIT professor Hal Gregersen, identifies the behaviors of the world’s best innovators to demonstrate how individuals can enhance their own innovator DNA and increase the innovation capabilities of their organizations. Today Jeff and Michael discuss his newest book Innovation Capital. You see, great leaders of innovation know that creativity is not enough. They succeed not only on the basis of their ideas, but because they have the vision, reputation, and networks to win the backing needed to commercialize them. It turns out that this quality–called “innovation capital”–is measurably more important for innovation than just being creative. The authors have spent decades studying how people get great ideas (the subject of The Innovator’s DNA) and how people test and develop those ideas (explored in The Innovator’s Method). Now they share what they’ve learned from a multipronged research program designed to determine how people compete for, and obtain, resources to launch new ideas. How you can build a personal reputation for innovation. What techniques you can use to amplify your innovation capital. How you can garner attention for your ideas and projects and persuade audiences to support them. What it means to provide visionary leadership and how you can achieve it. Featuring interviews with the superstars of innovation–individuals like Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Elon Musk (Tesla), Marc Benioff (Salesforce), Indra Nooyi (PepsiCo), and Shantanu Narayen (Adobe)–Jeff dives in deep.

Large companies employ a variety of methods to develop new products, services, and processes that are critical to their future. We typically refer to these as “innovation,” but what we really mean is growth. Continuous and sustainable growth requires repeatable, scalable business models that create long-term competitive advantages. Every large company has a track record for innovation, that’s how they became large in the first place. “Innovation Capital” is the combination of a company’s talent, ideas, and culture, leveraged by their institutional knowledge, and fused with a capacity for rapid data acquisition. When combined with a system of real-time innovation metrics, innovation portfolio management is informed by data, maximizing returns and market position. Launchpad Co-Founder and Executive Chairman Jim Hornthal will discuss the components of Innovation Capital, how to find and share your company's existing assets, and how to create a culture and process that maximizes use of Innovation Capital.

For Episode 2 of Startup Capital, Season 2, we reached out to someone who knows the intricacies of Tallahassee's ecosystem better than anyone: Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum. Elected to the mayor's office in April, 2013, Gillum has been the driving force behind a number of local initiatives, both civic and economic. Most recently, Gillum began a community-wide initiative called the Tallahassee Innovation Partnership (TIP). Spearheaded by Gillum's office, the TIP seeks to connect the city's different institutions with innovative new businesses in town. Kicking off the TIP was an innovation pitch night, which gave local entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch their startups to the community. This is a step towards solving one issue that we've identified here through Startup Capital: a disconnect between the local startup scene and many of the city's economic players in government and higher education. Two weeks after that Pitch Night, our host Lucas Lindsey sat down with Mayor Gillum for an honest conversation about Tallahassee's past, present, and future as a home for startups and entrepreneurship.
