According to the INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard of 2023, Cape Town has the worst traffic congestion in South Africa, with the average driver delayed by 83 hours over the course of a year. The cities ranked worse than Cape Town are much bigger in terms of population and size, so this is clearly an issue which needs to be addressed considering the projected growth of Cape Town. In today's panel discussion John Maytham speaks to Professor Johann Andersen, Adjunct Professor of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Intelligent Transportation Systems at the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University, and to Neil Slingers, Director: Transport Planning and Network Management, City of Cape Town.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week marks the 300th edition of Sustainability Now! and, your host, Justin Mog, is thrilled to welcome back into the studio his very first guest from April 2017, Chris Glasser with Streets For People (https://twitter.com/Streets4Peeps , https://www.streetsforpeople.org). S4P's mission is to “transform Louisville's streets and neighborhoods into vibrant, active, inviting places,” and on today's program we will discuss all of the ways the organization is currently pushing for that vision. We discuss: • The need for a Louisville Metro Department of Transportation (DOT) to set priorities and coordinate complex projects so we can actually implement what gets funded (like downtown two-way projects!) • Renewed statewide attention for the need to legalize Automated Traffic Enforcement in Kentucky, with a new automated enforcement bill filed January 4th by Rep. Rachel Roarx (D-38) at the start of the KY General Assembly. • A reformed Speed Hump Policy for Louisville; • An All-Way Stop Policy for urban neighborhood streets; • Why we need to shift the existing SHIFT Scoring for KYTC Projects to new criteria for allocating highway funds; • The potential for an E-Bike Rebate from APCD; • The need for a Roadway Modernization Fund for Louisville to invest in Intelligent Transportation Systems;
• The vision for a Waterfront Parkway multiuse path on Campbell St connecting Paristown Pointe to Waterfront Park; and • The stupidity of the state Tourism Board's new proposal for a car tunnel to the Fairgrounds when what we really need is a Summer Transit Network with two high-frequency bus lines that connect the city's primary tourist attractions during a six-month period from April to September; As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Sustainability Now! is hosted by Dr. Justin Mog and airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Monday at 6pm and repeats Tuesdays at 12am and 10am. In this episode I have a fantastic conversation with Renee Autumn Ray. Renee is an urban planner who has worked in transportation planning, policy, operations, and data evaluation. She is currently the Strategy and Innovation Leader at Conduent Transportation, a technology company which includes payments and data analytics for transit, curb-side management, road user charging, and public safety. She also serves on the Transportation Research Board committees for Intelligent Transportation Systems and Innovative Public Transport Services and Technologies, and the Board of Directors for Georgia Bikes, so she's another great guest in the #mobilitymarch series. Renee and I discuss the early career experiences that sparked her interest in Smart Community concepts and the power of bringing data, including qualitative data, into decision making. Renee tells us about some of the projects she's been working on, including curating panels for conferences with a focus on mobility and accessibility. We also talk about why we should be looking at the way parallel industries have solved similar problems when we're looking at problems we're facing in our own industries. Renee also shares with us the emerging opportunities for accessibility in the micro-mobility space, and the different ways people are thinking about reducing accessibility barriers to travel. We then have a great chat about how important accessible and flexible workplaces are for everyone, and especially those with disabilities, which is timely considering the way Covid-19 is forcing a lot more people into remote work. We finish our chat with Renee sharing a couple of her favourite resources for learning more about these concepts. Two current approaches to autonomous driving are as follows: the “Google Car Paradigm” involves ensuring that each vehicle can sense and perceive the world, and then act accordingly, while the “V2X Paradigm” involves vehicles that communicate with one another, as well as the infrastructure, to act in a coordinated way. The latter approach promises improved safety, mobility, and environmental sustainability, although to date these claims have limited verification. This talk evaluates the California cut flower industry's current transportation practices and investigates the feasibility and cost of establishing a shipping consolidation center in Oxnard, California. The problem is formulated using a Mixed-Integer programming model. The model estimates a 34.8% shipping cost decrease, $20M, if all California farms participated in the consolidation center. Our analysis of estimated cut-flower trade flows originating from Miami shows that the magnitudes of these flows are relatively sensitive to shipping cost, controlling for market size.
