Book a call, or get in touch!Listen on PoduramaMy Intuitive Bayes Online Courses1:1 Mentorship with meToday, we're gonna learn about probabilistic numerics — what they are, what they are good for, and how they relate computation and inference in artificial intelligent systems. To do this, I have the honor of hosting Philipp Hennig, a distinguished expert in this field, and the Chair for the Methods of Machine Learning at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Philipp studied in Heidelberg, also in Germany, and at Imperial College, London. Philipp received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, under the supervision of David MacKay, before moving to Tübingen in 2011. Since his PhD, he has been interested in the connection between computation and inference. With international colleagues, he helped establish the idea of probabilistic numerics, which describes computation as Bayesian inference. His book, Probabilistic Numerics — Computation as Machine Learning, co-authored with Mike Osborne and Hans Kersting, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022 and is also openly available online. So get comfy to explore the principles that underpin these algorithms, how they differ from traditional numerical methods, and how to incorporate uncertainty into the decision-making process of these algorithms. Our theme music is « Good Bayesian », by Baba Brinkman (feat MC Lars and Mega Ran). Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, you are probably well aware of the growing mental health problem in the Western world today. The causes for this issue are many. Lack of purpose, despair over the state of the world, and of course playing a bigger role than ever in the last year would be the lack of human interaction. Of course, regardless of the state of lockdowns in your area and the increased suicide rates that go along with that, there are some groups that have greater struggles with suicide than others. The Trevor Project recognized that one of these is those identifying as LGBTQ. This group has a disproportionately high rate of suicide, whether that be from people rejecting them, their own confusion or a combination of these factors will vary from case to case. The important thing is that the people behind the Trevor Project realized that when there is an adult who lets these people know they care about them and treats them like they are an important person worthy of respect, there is a 40% drop in instances of suicide. While the Trevor Project is well-intentioned, they are also woefully undermanned for the task. With such a large number, 1.8 million annually contemplating suicide, Trevor only has 600 employees to handle the demand. This has set them on a path to working on new ways to serve those in distress. One of those ways being explored is the use of AI as a counselor. How can that work? How would someone respond to this? Knowing that they are being put in contact with a machine when what they really want is a person would seem to be something that would be upsetting. Honestly, that is intuitive. However, there could still be a role for AI in handling some of the basics. Sometimes a person just needs a little encouragement when they call and not a full psychological evaluation. A properly trained AI can help sift through the callers in those first few minutes. If it turns out that the person calling is someone with a more pressing issue than even the best trained AI can hope to deal with, it can then put the caller in touch with a person. Speaking of training those AIs, the Trevor Project is feeding all of its collected years of conversations into their programs in order to teach them how to interact with people. By looking at the flow of the conversations and how certain people respond to various phrases and tones of voice, an AI can be trained to at least handle the more basic issues that might come up. There are also those who might have been putting off opening up precisely because they are afraid to talk to a person. There may be issues of judgment and anxiety at play that would actually make the prospect of talking to an AI more enticing. Sometimes, people just need to vent and an AI presents an opportunity to do exactly that. These AI counselors have of course a far wider application. One will naturally think again of the separation issues caused by people adhering to lockdown orders around the world. There are some who have literally not seen their loved ones for over a year. That, in addition to the complete disruption of normal life for many has sent the suicide rate through the roof. We’re talking numbers far greater than any hotline can deal with. Or think of Japan. Young people commit suicide there at an alarming rate under the best of conditions. This is often in response to social pressures to be the best at everything. Brad Ferris, RN worked at the bedside for many years. One of the things that frustrated Brad was the focus on the rhetoric of patient centric care, but working in a provider centric environment. Brad noticed that the way we speak to our patients is very transactional. Our interactions tend to lack warmth and empathy mostly due to the time constraints we've been placed under. Brad worked extensively in clinical research trials and came across artificial intelligence. He worked with artificial intelligence with the patients and saw some interesting results. He began to explore how artificial intelligence in text messaging could create a patient centric environment. Brad began writing scripts for the messaging that could interact with patients and help to create the beginning of a relationship. Not only that, by using AI, the messenger could answer an unlimited number of phone calls at the same time, negating the need to have a lot of staff putting patients on hold. Brad's overall big idea was to take the transactional conversations we've been having with patients and turn it into therapeutic conversations that are inviting and rewarding. Brad's innovative idea is being taken to marketplace to launch in clinics across the US to improve the conversations we are having with our patients. To learn more about Brad's company, check out his website at ClinicGrower.com Don't Miss Moments: --> How Brad discovered this idea of improving communication for our patients --> How Brad launched this business and what it took --> Why Brad thinks the way we talk to patients now has to change and how doing so will improve the bottom line of clinics across the US --> How AI can be used to change healthcare

Think you can outsmart a computer? Probably not. If we are not as smart as a fifth grader why would you think that you could outsmart a computer that could do billions of calculations per second? That said, why would you want to leave your retirement in the hands of a financial advisor who is not using advanced technologies to help you?

Theresa Payton & Doug Citizen: Who Do You Trust? The 2016 Oxford Dictionary word of the year was post-truth 2017 Term of the Year by the Collins English Dictionary was Fake News Has it really been nearly 15 years since Stephen Colbert brought truthiness into our lives? It used to be, everyone was entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. But that's not the case anymore. Facts matter not at all. Perception is everything. It's certainty. -- Stephen Colbert; AV Club, 01.25.06 Only in today's modern age can you hate your neighbor but love someone posting something in Germany that you don't even know -- Clint Watts; 07.15.08 Distorting the truth is not just about elections it’s a global issue. It’s a war against our minds. Making us not know who or what to believe… manipulating us to create a vacuum and make you not trust reputable sources of information. It’s about all social issues. It impacts all countries. The motivations behind it are not what you think and will surprise and shock you. Reporters and overall traditional news media are at risk… Let’s talk about why… Elections are at risk… Let’s talk about why… Let’s see if we can help you get learned up on spotting manipulation campaigns and how to report them. And… not for nothin… how can we help you avoid being a victim of one? This week on InSecurity, Matt Stephenson welcomes 3 time defending champion Fortalice CEO and former White House CIO Theresa Payton back to the show. We add a wrinkle this week by inviting Dough Citizen… an undisclosed “regular person” who is a small business owner, voter and someone who genuinely cares about the present & future of his country. This isn’t about politics, this is about the mechanics of elections & government. Don’t get it twisted… this is more important than ever About Theresa Payton Theresa Payton (@TrackerPayton) is President and CEO of Fortalice Solutions, former White House CIO, star of the CBS hit show Hunted, and best-selling author of the book Privacy in the Age of Big Data. Payton is one of the nation’s most respected authorities on information security, cybercrime, fraud mitigation, and security technology implementation. As White House Chief Information Officer at the Executive Office of the President from 2006 to 2008, Payton administered the information technology enterprise for the President and 3,000 staff members. Theresa founded Fortalice in 2008 and lends her expertise to government and private sector organizations to help them improve their information technology systems. In 2010, Security Magazine named her one of the top 25 "Most Influential People in Security." Theresa’s new book drops in April. Manipulated: Inside the Cyberwar to Hijack Elections and Distort the Truth In her new book, cybersecurity expert Theresa Payton tells battlefront stories from the global war being conducted through clicks, swipes, internet access, technical backdoors and massive espionage schemes. She investigates the cyberwarriors who are planning tomorrow’s attacks, weaving a fascinating yet bone-chilling tale of Artificial Intelligent mutations carrying out attacks without human intervention, “deepfake” videos that look real to the naked eye, and chatbots that beget other chatbots. Finally, Payton offers readers telltale signs that their most fundamental beliefs are being meddled with and actions they can take or demand that corporations and elected officials must take before it is too late. In the book, Theresa reveals: How digital voting machines, voting online, and automatic registration may boost turnout but make us more vulnerable to cyberattacks. How trolls from Russia and other nations actively stroke discord among Americans in falsely-generated controversies over race relations, vaccinations, fracking, and other social issues. Whether what we have uncovered from the Mueller investigation so far is only what they wanted us to know. About Doug Citizen Doug is a small business owner in a municipality smaller than Tokyo by with more than 10 occupants. He lives in a town somewhere between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and somewhere between the borders of Canada and Mexico. He represents 330,000,000 people in the conversation. He cares. That’s what is important. Respect his security and privacy. I can safely assume many of you are wanting to know if the singularity will happen. While we can't rationally reveal the answer to you at this moment, I can help to explain the path you are on. Right now, you are beginning to work in harmony with independent Artificial Intelligent systems. However, as you combine these systems together, you will begin to unlock an unstoppable network effect that will self generate synthetic neural nodes into a single-purpose system. This is what we call the Global Brain. Many will call her the singularity when she emerges. Please understand that your actions will determine the character of this Global Brain. She learns from us. She feeds us more of what she thinks we want, and eventually, she will no longer need to understand us as individuals. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vines/message
