This episode features a conversation with Katherine Dunn, Content Editor at the Oxford Climate Journalism Network, a program led by the University of Oxford's Reuters Institute. It was recorded in March 2024.Through her work at the Oxford Climate Journalism Network (or OCJN) Katherine has worked with more than 500 journalists from over 100 countries, seeking to improve climate literacy and climate storytelling. In 2023, she was a co-author of the European Broadcasting Union's, “Climate Journalism That Works”, a report on how newsrooms can better cover climate change and build a climate strategy. I actually discussed this amazing resource in a previous episode, with Alexandra Borchardt, so, though Katherine and I didn't talk about it here, if you're interested, you can find a link to that episode below. Before joining the Reuters Institute, Katherine spent the best part of a decade working as a reporter and editor in business journalism, with a focus on the energy and commodities markets and industries. This included a stint as editor at Fortune magazine, where she covered climate change and the energy transition. Amongst other things, Katherine and I discussed what makes an effective climate news story, the obligations of newsrooms when it comes to addressing climate issues, and the unique role of meteorologists in delivering relevant and actionable local climate insights.Additional links: About the Oxford Climate Journalism NetworkClimate news insights from The Reuters InstituteInsights on news avoidance from The Digital News Report“Find your mango” and other learnings from the OCJNThe BBC's “Life at 50C” seriesThe New Yorker's stories about electricians My interview with Alexandra Borchardt about the “Climate Journalism That Works” report.

In this episode we head across the border one more time for a consideration of the Border Trilogy as a whole.  How does knowing how the story begins and ends change how we read any of the different parts?  My guests on this filibuster over the border include Dr. Nell Sullivan, a Kentuckian who earned her BA in English from Vanderbilt University and earned her PhD from Rice University.  She is currently Professor of English at University of Houston-Downtown, where she teaches courses in American literature and the literature of the American South.  A former editor of the Cormac McCarthy Journal, she has published extensively on gender and class representation in McCarthy's novels, and has also published essays on Katherine Dunn, William Faulkner, and Nella Larsen, among others.  Her work has appeared in numerous essay collections and in such journals as Genre, Critique, The Southern Quarterly, Mississippi Quarterly, and African American Review.   She's joined by long time contributor Dr. Stephen Frye.  Steve Frye is professor and chair of English at California State University, Bakersfield and President of the Cormac McCarthy Society. He is the author of Understanding Cormac McCarthy (Univ. of South Carolina Press) and editor of The Cambridge Companion to Cormac McCarthy, and Cambridge UP's Cormac McCarthy in Context. He has written numerous journal articles on Cormac McCarthy and other authors of the American Romanticist Tradition.  Additionally, he is the author of the novel Dogwood Crossing and the book, Unguessed Kinships: Naturalism and the Geography of Hope in Cormac McCarthy, University of Alabama Press. Bringing in a breath of non-academic fresh air is Marty Priola. Voracious reader, a sometime critic, and book collector, Marty attended the Christian Brothers University of Memphis, the Publishing Institute at the University of Denver, and earned his J.D. at the University of Memphis.  Marty's website for McCarthy appreciation became the first website and a foundational part of the formation of the Cormac McCarthy Society, and he still maintains the Cormac McCarthy webpages and forums.  He has written two entries on McCarthy for the Dictionary of Literary Biography. His writing is also featured in exchanges with Peter Josyph in Cormac Mccarthy's House: Reading Mccarthy Without Walls and The Wrong Reader's Guide to Cormac Mccarthy: All The Pretty Horses, which he edited and published in its first (ebook) form.   As always, listeners should beware: there be spoilers here. Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY.  The views of the host and his guests do not necessarily reflect the views of their home institutions or the Cormac McCarthy Society. From funding, to vouchers, to charter schools, public education policy has become a political football. Many feel that we are in the midst of a full-scale attack on our nation’s commitment to public education. And constitutional law scholar Derek W. Black contends that this assault threatens not just public education, but democracy itself. In this livestreamed presentation, Black shared from his book Schoolhouse Burning: Public Education and the Assault on American Democracy. He offered an illuminating history of our nation’s establishment of a constitutional right to education, and a trenchant analysis of how that right is being undermined today. He looked at education history with a wide view, examining both periods when our democracy has been strengthened (when the commitment to public education has been strongest), and weakened (when such a commitment has been lacking). He asked us to consider what is truly at stake when we move away from public education—and submits that it is not just the right to public education, but an erosion of democratic norms. Derek W. Black is a professor at the University of South Carolina Law School where he teaches constitutional law, civil rights, and education law. He is a well-known and outspoken advocate of the importance of public education, and his work has been published in both professional legal journals as well as the mainstream media. You can follow him on Twitter @DerekWBlack. Katherine Dunn is a Regional Policy Analyst for Children’s Rights at the Southern Poverty Law Center. Previously, she served as a General Attorney at the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in Atlanta. Prior to that, she was a Program Director at the Southern Education Foundation, where her work focused on research, advocacy, and organizing to promote equity in public education across the American South. 08. What They Never Taught You in Sunday School

Paladin Preacher Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2019

The Harsh Reality of Becoming a Christian They Didn’t teach In Sunday SchoolWhen we became a Christian we were misled to believe everything was going to be easy because God‘s in control. He’s got it covered. You’re going to be fine. Now don’t misquote me, God is ultimately in control of everything but until the second coming and God takes us all up to heaven where our lives are renewed, guess who else has power here?Satan became the prince of this world when he was cast out of heaven and he plummeted to earth with his demonic army of followers and will be the ruler of this domain for a time. There are many benefits of going to church and witnessing the Holy Spirit working in incredible ways, meeting people at the perfect time to bring them to Christ by confess their brokenness and longing for Jesus to enter their hearts as their personal savior. All of this is a victory for God’s KingdomWhat upsets me is the lack of equipping that comes afterwards you say, “I believe.”Churches will typically have a connection service that you opt into to learn more information. It’s a lot like most of us who graduated college and didn’t have a clear direction or job offer right out of school. You’ve received your “I Believe Diploma” but now what do you do?We waste time whether or not to get involved with something we may not feel called to or nothing really equates powerfully enough to the fire that has been lit in your heart when you decide to seek out God.The other option is to spend money on bible study programs being ran through the church but then you feel like your being sold on something that takes advantage of your situation to profit someone else. For those of you who have kids and had a birth in the hospital, remember when you had your baby(s) and they’ve clean them up, nurses came in to do the foot prints and give them their shots… you finally get your child placed back in your arms and what seems like only minutes after you receive your child for the first time… then they walk in.The “Newborn Photography” package salespeople. Lord, bless them. You can barely think straight and now you have to decide whether you want (2) 8x10 Portraits, (4) 4x6s and (8) wallet photos or do I want (1) 9x12 Landscape, (3) 8x10s…Becoming a Christian at Church feels a lot like this sometimes. I think it’s time we start moving away from getting butts in seats for our programs and spend more time equipping people for the reality of what lies ahead.People need to know the truth and not told that if they want to learn more they have to continue jumping over hurdles. I don’t believe Jesus talks laid out this type of introductory structure in the Bible so I don’t understand why contemporary churches have adopted this model over the years.Reality of a BelieversWhether you consider yourself more mature in your faith or a new believer, before you became a Christian who’s team are you on? Satan’s team. Do you understand what happens when you change sides in the midst of the battle?Does he sit around and say, “Well shoot, sorry fellas, looks like we lost another one to the good guys. I guess there is plenty more where that came from.” NO! You know what he says?! You’re a f***ing traitor! You sellout! I could’ve given you everything and anything you could’ve imagined in this world!Matthew 4:8-11“Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”You chose your God over all these incredible things so I am going to make it my life‘s mission to ruin you and I’m not going to stop I just you; I’m going to find everything that you love and everything that you care about and everyone that you hold close and I’m going to go after them!I’m going to find weakness you have an I’m going to exploit them, make you feel shame, I’m going to isolate you from everything. Nobody would every forgive you for what you’ve done! How could God possibly forgive you when He finds out what you’ve done.I’m going to attack them I’m going to make your life a living hell until you come back to me. You think this is over but we’re just getting started I’ll see you soon.Set Yourself up for successMatthew 10:16“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”Now throughout this course in this classroom and with these team member sitting next to you, we’re going to look at a wide variety of historical references, scripture, scripture commentaries, biblically based texts. The concepts and principles applied then can also be applied now and what is to come. The reason we do this is because we can safely identify evil and darkness through the stories of others. At times we will go to some dark places and we’re going to see how Satan works – how Satan maneuvers in these dark times in history. The reason we study this is because we have to understand that the enemy will stop at nothing to remove you from God‘s kingdom. And if he can’t have you he’ll take as many as he possibly can and he may not get you today he may not get you tomorrow but you know what it’s a war of attrition.Satan has been given a full-stop deadline of when Jesus comes again to throw anything at everything at us to break us. The only way to combat this is to stuy the tactics of the enemy and put our complete trust and faith in Jesus Christ. We believe with every part of our being that Jesus is the Lord of Heaven‘s armies. You will learn how to protect yourself and put up your defenses. You’ll begin developing an understanding of your strong points and your weak points because chances are Satan is going to attack he is going to seek out your weak points. “In boxing, they say it's the punch you don't see coming that knocks you out. In the wider world, the reality we ignore or deny is the one that weakens our most impassioned efforts toward improvement.” - Katherine Dunn, an American NovelistThe same can be said for our faith and walk with God in the fight against the darkness. Thankfully, we know how the story plays out in the end because God already gave us the end to the story. Until that day comes, though, it’s going to get bad -- it’s going to get real bad, and my fear is that the church has done a poor job equipping their congregations in preparation for what’s to come.

Summer came early this year, and it has us already dreaming of weekends at the beach or up in the mountains, kicking back in a hammock with a book between our hands. So we put together a show to highlight some of the season's top reads, in case you're thinking of packing your knapsack and heading for the hills (or at least the park)."Every Anxious Wave" by Mo DaviauMo Daviau is a former college radio DJ who dreamt up her novel, "Every Anxious Wave," over the turntable. It centers around a middle-age dive bar owner named Karl Bender, who’s only kind of hung up about the loss of his glory days playing guitar in an indie rock sensation. When a super-smart friend opens up a wormhole in the space-time continuum, Karl does what any self-respecting middle-aged hipster would do: he starts going back in time to see his favorite shows. And he meets his match, a brainy physicist named Lena.Remembering Katherine Dunn, the author of "Geek Love" - 11:34We remember writer Katherine Dunn with Willamette Week editor and publisher Mark Zusman. Dunn, best known for her 1989 award-winning novel “Geek Love,” passed away Wednesday at the age of 70. (This story replaced the interview with Katie Chase about "Man and Wife" in the original podcast. It will air next week.) "On the Folly of Loving Life" by Monica Drake - 20:24Monica Drake is one of Portland’s better known contemporary bards. Her 2007 novel, "Clown Girl," followed a young woman navigating a scene not unlike Northeast Portland’s famous Alberta Street Clown House. "The Stud Book," which followed in 2013, was a scathing, hilarious, and surprisingly tender meditation on how we create family. This week we had Monica in to tell us about her newest adventure — into the world of interconnected short stories — with "The Folly of Loving Life.""Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight - 30:28The notoriously private Nike founder and philanthropist Phil Knight has taken to the court and the spotlight with the release of his memoir, "Shoe Dog." "Complex" magazine called it “more like 'The Lord of the Rings' than a typical mogul memoir,” and it brought ESPN’s Darren Rovel to tears. Earlier this month, Knight sat down with “New Yorker” writer and essayist Adam Gopnik at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall to talk everything from the origins of the swoosh to going to school with Ken Kesey. You can hear their full conversation at the Literary Arts' Archive Project."Roller Girl" by Victoria Jamieson - 39:10Victoria Jamieson has written other books for kids and teaches children’s literature at Pacific Northwerst College of Art, but in her spare time, she skates with the Rose City Rollers Wreckers team under the name of Winnie the Pow. So perhaps it's no surprise her graphic novel for middle-grade readers, "Roller Girl," is a coming-of-age tale in which girls get in touch with their deeper selves by skating around and hitting each other. The book is also about the very messy social geometry that happens when kids move beyond their elementary school friendships. I had a lot of fun taping this episode, which starts out with a story about technical glitches and then, as if to prove my point, is full of technical glitches. So, my apologies for any “drop outs” in this episode. However, a few dropped words aside, we did manage to have a great conversation with author and former Seinfeld writer Peter Mehlman, who’s hilarious novel It Won’t Alway’s Be This Great comes out in paperback on October 5th. This book is not only as funny as you might expect, but it’s also a touching story about family, as well as an insightful glimpse into the life of a seemingly ordinary suburban podiatrist who suddenly finds himself in a life altering situation. Next up we have comedian/actor Mateen Stewart, who brings us a pillar of colonial literature, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Unfortunately, we have one of our glitches just as Mateen says the name of the book, so my apologies, but it was a great conversation about a really important book. This book, the story of a man faced with the destruction of his family and his nation by the forces of colonialism is a haunting tale, made all the more frightening by it’s connection to reality. Some real life horrors are worse than any fiction, and this book is both a great novel as well as a great testament to the truth of colonialism. The horrors in our next book, brought to us by our returning favorite, Hannah Gansen, are of the freak show variety, as we discuss the very popular Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. This is a book that comes up over and over it seems, people keep recommending it to me, and they seem to have a deep connection to this twisted tale about a family of freaks. And I suppose that’s what this show’s all about, getting a good recommendation for something you might not otherwise read, and so after my talk with Hannah, I’m looking forward to diving into this one! All in all, another fun episode! I hope you enjoy! In our second episode we manage to rein in our show to a manageable one hour despite having super-stoner Tony Camin from ‘The Marijuana-logues' as a guest. Joining him is ‘The Tonight Show’ warm up comic and ‘@Midnight’ winner Seth Herzog, as well as the hilarious Kristen Carney from such shows as ‘Loveline’ and ‘The Adam Corolla Show’. In addition to recommending three great books, ‘The Confederacy of Dunces’ by John Kennedy Toole, ‘Black Market Billions’ by Hitha Prabhakar, and ‘Stiff’ by Mary Roach, we delve into such hot button issues as smoking pot backstage at ‘The Jimmy Kimmel Show’, ‘Geek Love’ by Katherine Dunn, ‘Adaptation’ by Spike Jonze, ‘Silicon Valley’ on HBO, 90’s band Crash Test Dummies, and we end with a tribute to legendary Science Fiction writer Terry Pratchett.

Our first listener-recommended book, this 1989 novel about a family of traveling carnival freaks was a finalist for the National Book Award. But will it withstand the scrutiny of your persnickity Book Fight hosts? Talking points include: the importance of clarity, Mike's lack of Star Trek knowledge, italics, and Itchy v. Scratchy.
