Imagine a civics classroom where every student—regardless of ability, background, or learning style—can fully engage with the democratic principles that shape our society. Three exceptional educators from a civic literacy cohort share their revolutionary approaches to differentiating civic education, transforming traditional multiple-choice instruction into vibrant, accessible learning experiences. These master teachers, representing elementary, middle, and gifted education, reveal practical strategies for making civic concepts come alive for all learners. From inquiry-based activities with "low entry, high ceiling" approaches to creative assessment methods that prioritize understanding over memorization, they demonstrate how modern civic education can reach every student in meaningful ways. You'll discover how innovative techniques like hexagonal thinking help students visualize connections between civic concepts, while role-playing activities and simulations transform abstract principles into tangible experiences. The teachers share how they've successfully used everything from Hamilton songs to fake guillotines to make civic knowledge stick, proving that engagement and emotional connection are the true keys to lasting civic understanding. Most powerfully, these educators explain how they connect abstract constitutional principles to students' everyday experiences—comparing international conflicts to playground disagreements or helping students see how First Amendment rights apply in their daily lives. Through these real-world connections, civics transforms from a collection of facts to a framework for understanding society.Whether you're a new teacher seeking a foundation for teaching civics, a veteran educator looking for fresh approaches, or anyone passionate about preparing the next generation of engaged citizens, these insights will inspire you to reimagine how we teach democracy. Join the movement to ensure every child receives the civic education they deserve and develops the knowledge and skills to become active, informed participants in our democratic process. Strategies for Building Civil Discussion Skills: Conversations with Justin Glodowski

What does it truly look like to empower students as citizens? Justin Glodowski, a 14-year veteran teacher from Wisconsin, reveals practical strategies that transform students from passive learners into active civic participants.Justin's approach begins with a foundational belief: if we want students to become engaged citizens, we must first teach them how to discuss difficult topics productively. Drawing from his experience teaching AP Government to freshmen, he shares how establishing clear discussion norms creates a classroom environment where students can tackle controversial issues more effectively than many adults on social media. The magic happens when students take ownership of their learning. Through congressional simulations where students draft legislation on issues from corn mazes to taxation reform, they experience the complexity of governance firsthand. Justin's Socratic seminars—complete with peer evaluation scorecards—develop crucial skills for democratic participation while making abstract concepts tangible.Perhaps most valuable is Justin's framework for discussing controversial topics through the lens of constitutionality rather than personal opinion. By encouraging students to think like constitutional scholars rather than simply sharing feelings, he elevates classroom discourse and builds critical thinking skills essential for citizenship.Beyond specific activities, Justin emphasizes the importance of teacher collaboration and professional development. His podcast "Engage" exemplifies his commitment to sharing resources that make civics education interactive and meaningful. When asked what gives him hope, his answer is simple yet profound: students genuinely want to understand their world, and when given the opportunity, they demonstrate remarkable capacity for thoughtful civic dialogue.Ready to transform your approach to civics education? Disclaimer: https://rumble.com/v6056un-ukmfa-disclaimer.htmlElizabeth M Hart joins us from Australia for an in depth conversation about her extensive research into vaccine policy and the ethical implications surrounding informed consent, particularly in the context of Australia's COVID-19 response.Elizabeth is an independent researcher investigating the vaccine industry and conflicts of interest in vaccination policy. She's questioning the ever-increasing number of vaccine products and revaccinations on the taxpayer-funded 'womb to tomb' vaccination schedule, and the conflicts of interest of people influencing vaccination policy. She has undertaken extensive correspondence seeking accountability for the grossly disproportionate and ill-targeted Covid-19 response, including challenging vaccine mandates and the evidence for the so-called 'emergency'.She is particularly challenging coercion and mandates for vaccination, which violate valid voluntary informed consent. Elizabeth's interest in vaccination policy and practice started in 2008, with her investigation into the over-vaccination of companion animals. Her websites vaccination is political.net and over-vaccination.net provide a record of much of her research on vaccination policy. She is also now raising this issue on her substack Vaccination is political at elizabethhart.substack.comIn this discussion, Elizabeth highlights the corruption within the vaccine industry, the impact of legislation like 'No Jab, No Pay', and the role of media in shaping public perception. Elizabeth emphasises the importance of informed consent and critiques the coercive measures taken by the government and medical professionals during the pandemic. The discussion serves as a call to action for greater transparency and accountability in vaccine policy. Elizabeth and our CEO, Dr Liz Evans, discuss the aftermath of COVID-19 and cal for accountability and reflection on the actions taken during the pandemic. Together with Ian Humphreys, they explore the importance of informed consent in medical practices, the ethical implications of mandates, and the legal responsibilities of healthcare professionals. The dialogue also touches on the erosion of public trust in authorities and the necessity for transparency and accountability in the healthcare system. The probability of criminal actions having taken place are explored as well as considering the stark possibility of treasonous behaviour.UKMFA:CALL TO ACTION: Please follow us and subscribe on our YouTube and Rumble channels and please share our content on social media and with friends and family, to help us get the message out and increase our reach. All our podcasts can also be found on the major audio platforms e.g. Apple and Spotify. Our new Substack is found here: https://substack.com/@ukmfa1We are grateful for all donations to help us to continue and grow our work; lobbying decision makers; educating and empowering the public; running campaigns and producing our podcasts. We'll explore the complex landscape of political reform in the early 1900s and how social movements collided within the Arizona Constitutional Convention.Join us as we discuss the significant events leading up to the pivotal November 1912 elections when voters approved one of the first five amendments granting women the constitutional right to vote in Arizona. We'll dive into the challenges faced by suffragettes like Frances Willard Munds and Pauline O'Neill, who fought tirelessly for recognition amidst political maneuvering and deep-seated fears that women's suffrage would fuel the prohibition movement.Learn why earlier conventions hesitated to embrace suffrage, the fears surrounding a perceived link between voting rights and alcohol reform, and how the initiative process became a powerful tool for activists. In this episode, we dive into a pivotal moment in American history when Congress prepared to admit Arizona and New Mexico as the final contiguous states. We explore the intriguing and contentious relationship between President William Howard Taft and the progressive aspirations of Arizonans as they drafted their state constitution. Despite Taft's reputation as a trustbuster, his conservative views on constitutional law led him to veto Arizona's bid for statehood over the inclusion of a controversial recall provision that threatened the independence of the judiciary. We'll examine how the spirit of direct democracy was gaining momentum across the nation, with new innovations like initiatives, referenda, and political primaries being embraced by states like Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and California. Arizona's constitutional convention went even further, proposing the recall of not just elected officials but judges as well—a move that Taft vehemently opposed, labeling it "legalized terrorism."Join us as we unpack the struggle for statehood, the intense political negotiations that ensued, and the ultimate compromise that led to Arizona's admission into the Union. We'll also delve into the legacy of the recall power in Arizona, discussing its impact on political accountability and judicial independence, including a peculiar episode from the 1920s involving the Ku Klux Klan. Don't miss this fascinating exploration of a unique chapter in the quest for statehood and the evolving relationship between governance and the will of the people. These bills seek to enable terminally ill adults to get help from doctors to kill themselves – known as assisted dying or assisted suicide. Iain MacArthur put forward a similar Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill in the Scottish Parliament in March, which is currently being examined by the "lead committee".Clare discusses the bill with our CEO, Dr Liz Evans, and the conversation delves a little deeper into the reality of the situation as opposed to the romantic vision of a pain-free passing assisted by a Doctor with specialist skills. The UK Medical Freedom Alliance have just launched a new campaign to oppose bills going through both Westminster and Holyrood. We understand that this is a highly emotive issue and respect those with deeply held views in support of Assisted Dying, often in the context of a personal experience of suffering for themselves or loved ones. However, having considered all the complex ethical and practical issues, the UK Medical Freedom Alliance will oppose any change in the law that would allow Assisted Dying or Euthanasia for the following reasons:These bills pose a very serious threat to the sanctity and dignity of every human life and to medical ethics which requires a doctor to “First do no Harm”.Doctor-assisted dying denies the intrinsic value of human life and normalises death as a valid treatment for suffering. It is impossible to build in “safeguards” to prevent a slippery slope. Eligibility criteria will inevitably widen under legal challenges under equality laws.Real world experience of Assisted Dying and Euthanasia legislation in Canada, Netherlands, Oregan and Belgium is horrifying.Legislating for the choice to die will lead to vulnerable people feeling a duty to die.Disability rights campaigners are some of the most vocal opponents of Assisted Dying. The incentive to improve and provide good palliative care for all would be gone. Most Palliative Care doctors are strongly opposed to assisted dying and instead want resources to be put into increased access and funding for high quality palliative care and hospices so that no one needs to die in pain.It is a myth that assisted dying is necessary to prevent a painful death. With the current broken NHS and social care system, introducing assisted dying would not be safe for the public – coercion and abuse would be a real and significant risk, especially for the elderly, disabled and vulnerable.CALLS TO ACTIONWe are asking people to lobby their MPs to vote against the Leadbeater Bill, before the 29th November, when it has its second reading and vote.Links to “Calls to Action” and helpful resources from many other campaign groups are below in the titles, and is also on our campaign page.PROTEST - 29th November 9am-12pm outside Parliament. Dr Liz Evans, CEO of the UK Medical Freedom Alliance, the UK's leading voiceon medical ethics makes an important statement in response to shocking images of “Peppa Pig's Flu Clinic” on a Medical Centre's Twitter feed. They appear to be using the popular children's cartoon character Peppa Pig (along with party food, soft playand other kids' activities) to advertise and promote flu vaccines to children.UKMFA would like to remind the NHS, medical organisations and healthcareprofessionals responsible, that laws and ethical and professional codes enshrinethe principle of properly obtaining informed consent for all medical interventions. As well as requiring a full explanation of risks as well as benefits, they specifythat coercion and bribery must not be used. In addition, the Human MedicinesRegulations Act 2012 outlaws the advertising of medical products. The cynical use of cartoon characters, bouncy castles, face-painting and popcornto promote vaccines to children, prompting “pester power” with childrendemanding their parents to allow them these medical products, is unacceptable. This sinister behaviour and marketing should have no place in the sober andethical provision of healthcare, especially to children are particularly vulnerableto this sort of exploitation.CALL TO ACTION: Please follow us and subscribe on our YouTube and Rumble channels and please share our content on social media and with friends and family, to help us get the message out and increase our reach. All our podcasts can also be found on the major audio platforms e.g. Apple and SpotifyPlease visit the UK Medical Freedom Alliance at www.ukmedfreedom.org to access all our material and resources. Adam Robert Lewis sits down, virtually, with director Sara Sugarman.Sara, born in Rhyl, began her career as an actress making her television debut aged just 14 as ’Jessica Samuels’ in the BBC teen-drama ‘Grange Hill’.Sara moved away from her acting career in the 1990s and decided to further a career behind the scenes, directing.Sara gained praise behind the camera with a number of award-winning short films. Some of Sara’s early directorial pieces took place on location in the Garw Valley, where I grew up and consider home. Sara’s 1996 film ‘Valley Girls’, starring Gemma Jones and Wendy Phillips especially resonated with me. Wendy, affectionately known as Mrs Mop due to her previous job as our school cleaner, inspired me to go after my dream of acting. Sara and her faith in Wendy’s talent indicated that the dream was indeed possible.Sara returned to the Garw Valley in 2001 to film cult-classic ‘Very Annie Mary’, a musical-comedy written and directed by Sara, starring Rachel Griffiths and Jonathan Pryce. I have fond memories of this proudly Welsh film and coincidentally consider it as my first acting job albeit as a very young extra amongst the crowds!Sara soon moved from the Welsh valleys to the Silver Screen of Hollywood, where she directed motion pictures with Disney including teen-flick ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen’, starring Lindsey Lohan, Adam Garcia and Megan Fox.Sara’s most recent project “Saving the Cinema’ for Sky Movies, follows the story of Liz Evans and her campaign to save the local Lyric Cinema, starring Samantha Morton, Tom Felton and Jonathon Pryce. This interview held an extra ‘special something’ for me, almost a feeling of things coming full circle. Being able to discuss how my passion for acting began because of Sara and her work was truly an honour. And so with every story, we must start at the beginning…Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/brewingactors)

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

Getting our kids to talk to us is never easy (unless we’re standing with car keys in hand, front door ajar, 15 minutes late for an appointment). Based upon empirical evidence, “How was school today?” is the most annoying question a mom could ever ask. So why bother trying?  Because Jennifer Kolari, author of Connected Parenting: How to Raise a Great Kid, says getting our kids to open up is part of our job description: It’s our job as parents to help our kids sort through and process the things that happen to them during the day. “They don’t have the higher-order thinking to do it on their own yet. In this episode we lay out what gets our kids to talk– at every age and stage. Margaret says you have to “talk the talk that arrives.” But Amy comes at it armed with research; if her ninth-grader wants to talk NBA draft, she’s ready to lean in. Both of us plan to work on what Marie Roker Jones calls “listening with the intent to understand.” Here’s links to some research and hilarious takes on this topic that we mention in this episode: Alice Bradley for Lifehacker Offspring: Stop Asking Your Kid About Their Day Marie Roker-Jones for Good Men Project: 10 Ways to Get Your Son to Open Up and Talk to You Clare Gagne for Today’s Parent: Age-By-Age Guide To Getting Your Kid To Talk from American Girl: Conversation Starters To Get Your Girl To Talk About Her Day (to our surprise, “What emoji best describes the day you had?” was a great question!) Liz Evans for Huffington Post: 25 Ways to Ask Your Kids ‘So How Was School Today?’ Without Asking Them ‘So How Was School Today?’ The Ungame  …and some perfect viewing for you and your teenager: Maddie Corman’s wonderful short film How Was Your Day? How do you get your kids to open up? Tell us in the comments! Here’s one way we get our kids chatting with us– cooking together. We’ve both been pleasantly surprised at how HelloFresh has turned dinnertime prep into something our kids love to participate in. We follow the easy (super-easy) directions, chop along together, and then we all sit down together as a family to try something new (and maybe even talk about it).
