Today on Why Music Matters, I get to spend some time with one of my favorite musicians, with the added bonus that he happens to be my son. Declan Miers is a bassist, producer, composer and guitarist who is currently on the road with alternative R&B superstar SZA. He's performed and recorded with a host of Neo-soul, R&B, pop and jazz artists, including Mac Ayres, Renee Rapp, Brass Tracks, Cautious Clay, Cisco Swank, Gene Coye, Mikki Howard, Ava Max, and Alex Isley. But in my eyes, he's still that little kid who fell in love with music when he was still crawling around on the floor in front of the stereo, my longtime concert buddy, and the kid who left home at 16 to attend the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, and then headed out into the world to pursue his musical dreams. Declan was raised to speak his mind, and he does so here, in a conversation that touches on the mentorship he received from the Buffalo gospel, jazz, rock and funk music communities, the life of a young touring musician, and the role that music can play in teaching us all how to speak less and listen more. Welcome to Why Music Matters, Declan Miers. Let's have some fun!

Yes, indeed family, another summer is slowly leaving us. Like most summers, it's always a busy one for us. It has also had its own set of challenges this time around as well. However, we've all learned to adjust and make the most of crazy situations. In spite of the subtractions, we're always reminded of that joy that will continue to be ever-present in our midst. To put it plainly, our joy is our power. Get into our joy, and the rest will be easy work. Now that we've got the good word out of the way, let's move onward with the show. In this episode, we get it in with a nice gem from Mac Ayres, a little bit of D'angelo, a sprinkle of Brit funk from Lynx and Savanna, a nice tribute to the late Jesse Powell, a bit of the "Bad Boy Of Indie R&B", Bey Bright, and the list goes on and on. If you have a request, by all means, drop us a line at greatsoulradio@gmail.com, and we'll have your jam ready by the next show. Also, programming note, tune in to catch the live show on Friday nights, starting at 6pm est, 5pm central, 4pm mountain, 3pm pst, and 11pm gmt at www.greatsoulradio.live. As broadcast June 21, 2021 with bonus sunshine for you summer lovers on the podcast version. We open tonight reflecting on the 20th anniversary of the passing of John Lee Hooker. A man who was known as "The Boogie Man" was reticent of too much heavy publicity and once famously said that nobody really knew him. Despite that, he became one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, inspiring artists from every genre possible. After paying tribute, we rocked all the new tunes we could fit in for the full two hours of the show for the full two hours, with Danno commandeering the ship to port on the solo tip.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)John Lee Hooker – Boogie Chillun St. Germain – Sure Thing Cola Boyy feat John Carroll Kirby – Mailbox Myd feat L'Imperatrice – Loverini Aldous Harding – Old Peel Parcels – Free Freedom Fry – Colors Part II (32:23)Leon Bridges – Why Don't You Touch Me Zero 7 feat Lou Stone – Take My Hand Kings of Convenience feat Feist – Catholic Country Prateek Kuhad – Tare Hi Hum Feng Suave – Come Gather ‘Round Soccer Mommy – Kissing In The Rain Yves Tumor – Jackie Part III (59:31)Taylor Swift - Red Wiz Khalifa feat Charlie Puth - See You Again Mimi Webb - Dumb Love Sofia Carson - He Loves Me, But… Tones And I - Cloudy Day Clairo – Blouse KSI – Holiday Part IV (89:34)Conor Albert & Mac Ayres- Moonlight Ruth B - Princess Peach H.E.R. - We Made It Alan Walker & Imanbek - Sweet Dreams Charles Bradley - Ain't It A Sin Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights Raphael Saadiq - Good Man

We can't tell if Mac Ayres is as serious as we are, but we think we've all just become best friends. Without even listening to his otherworldly singing voice, watching him shred the guitar or playing the keys like a god damn legend, Mac is just a spectacular guy to hang out with. Within 24 hours the connection we made as friends was something that none of us were used to. Mac dropped out of Berklee School of Music because he knew exactly what he wanted and wasn't afraid to go after it immediately following that decision. His ability to capture an audience with his silky voice and his epic swagger on stage caught the attention of the popular culture and he's been growing ever since. If you haven't heard his music, we couldn't recommend it enough. Also, if you ever get the privilege of meeting him yourself, do yourself the favor of becoming his best friend. Go download all his music right now and follow him wherever you can. This kid is gonna blow us all away. Do you want to make a difference in the world, but get hung up over the size of the impact or the thought of being the only one, when there’s so much to be done? The guest on this episode talks about how we can start with doing and encouraging the little things, even when they can feel like only a drop in the bucket. It could be as simple as treating everyone we meet with kindness, using less plastic, or channeling our unique essence to impact others… which is exactly what this episode's guest does in spades.Heather Chelan joins me on the show to chat about what she is doing to make her corner of the world a better place, and how she keeps going even when the rest of the world is seemingly over it. Cue her catchy song The Pandemic Isn't Over Just Because You're Over It...Heather lives in East London, creating original music as a songwriter. She also makes bad ass harmony enriched PSA videos under the pseudonym HEB On The Web. I start off rambling about Giuliani's aides getting arrested, all the Trump bullshit, Matt Lauer raping colleagues and Joshua Brown. As for music, I play tunes by Bobby Caldwell, Mac Ayres and Little Brother. This episode is sponsored by WoodRocket.com.

Andrew and Sagar review soul singer Mac Ayres and his smooth keyboard/vocal combination, with the usual "Chill" or "No-Chill" segment after.
An in depth review of Mac Ayres' new album "Something to Feel." From a random artist i heard once in a dentist office to one of my favorite singers, Mac is a real soulful dude. Holding it down for the "Blue-Eyed Soul" his falsetto is effortless and his comfort on the mic and in the studio has delivered a project deeper and more advanced than his first album "Drive Slow." He also provided some instrumentation on this one showing he is more than just a voice. Talked about the busy month to come due to the R&B Gods blessing us, voicemail from @rest_ur_anklez and other random stuff (business as usual). Just opinions from my side about the albums (lyrics, concept, jokes, etc). Requests are always welcome. An in depth review of Deante' Hitchcock's 2017 EP "So Much For Good Luck". After weeks of putting it off, i was finally able to get around to reviewing this gem. Not the usual genre i cover, but there were some R&B elements to this cat. Melodies, samples and substance carried this EP to the end and i wasn't disappointed with the effort. Lyrically Deante' can hold his own and with the caliber of production on these 6 tracks i feel like this guy is destined for stardom. Shout out to @blkphantom for putting me on. Talked a little about next weeks review of the new Mac Ayres album, kicking off the "Trapped...." live tweets, introduced "The Washed Report" and other random stuff (business as usual).
