Behind every great man and woman of history, there's usually a library or a bookstore that has been formative in their life. Not only have bookstores shaped influential leaders, but also the ideas and movements that have altered society. Stoicism originated in a bookstore, Benjamin Franklin's bookstore influenced the American Revolution, and countless bookstores have been the backbones of activist movements. Evan Friss, author of The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore, talks with Ryan in today's episode about the unchanged charm of bookstores over centuries, the impact of Amazon on the book industry, the role of libraries, and the romantic yet challenging undertaking of running a bookstore.

“Technology is constantly changing and our business expertise in the industry really entails market development funds that we offer our solution providers, technical engineering expertise, our account management expertise and of course our operations,” says Rick Chapes, AVP of Sales for AT&T Partner Exchange (APEX). Chapes explains, “AT &T Partner Exchange is a resale channel of AT &T's indirect partner solutions organization. What we do is we offer our fiber and wireless connectivity services to resellers in the market, or commonly referred to as aggregators, and they take our fixed wireless and mobility services, and they bundle it into their value proposition in the market, and then resell it to their end -user customers.” “What makes it different for me is the customized, the bespoke service of it. Our customers can really buy internet connectivity 5G just about anywhere, but it's the customization, the attention to detail that really sets the Apex program apart from some others in the marketplace,” says Max Joseph, Sales and Business Development at AT&T, who joins Chapes on the podcast.   “Our differentiation in the market is that we have portals that our solution providers can utilize, so it's all about speed and simplicity when our solution providers are going to market with our fiber and wireless services.” Visit https://www.business.att.com/industries/partner-solutions/att-partner-exchange.html

Frenchie Shore, ça vous parle ? Non ?

Max Joseph’s is a very well-known name within the realm of executive protection training especially within the California circuit of professionals. My first exposure to him was when I was encouraged to train with him through talent executive services which is a very high-end boutique private security company out of Southern California. For me, this was more than enough validation and I dove right in. I really appreciated his training because it not only covered the hard skills of executive protection but it also covered the soft skills very accurately. Being that I went to his training after existing in the space for about seven years I was able to accurately appreciate the value he was giving to the students of his executive protection course. Training with Max is an experience that gives you a window into Marine Corps culture along with the standards and proficiency of a weathered elite instructor. Max maintains his standards and as a result, certificates that come from his program are well respected in the industry. As an individual, I’ve always appreciated Max's old-school methods along with his sense of humor and he’s a professional I always appreciate interacting with. Someone from the old guard that is still teaching a full spectrum of extremely salient, relevant, and cutting-edge tactics. Additionally, The cadre of instructors he leverages is under the umbrella of his training operation is top-notch. During this interview, we cover everything from executive protection operations, what it takes to be an amazing agent and what types of training professionals should be looking for to improve their performance within the private security game. There is something in this interview for everyone, ENJOY! Protector by nature and by trade Byron

Look around and you'll be surrounded by let's face it... d**ks. Not just in politics and business — but also in Medicine. We're taught lots about the multidisciplinary team and how important each member is — but that's not always the experience in the real world. What I really want to know is: Do you need to be a d**k to be a good leader? And not just the knee jerk response of: "of course not". I want to know the ins and outs, and maybe — if sometimes it's useful to be a bit brash or abrasive — and not always be everyone's best friend So I'm on a mission to ask this question to all the people I admire in Medicine. Whether that's clinicians, academics, policymakers or people in business. People of all backgrounds, races, genders etc. It should be really interesting. I hope you enjoy the series — and as always reviews on iTunes are worth their weight in gold. Powered by Firstory Hosting

In 1921 a schooner ran aground on the treacherous shoals off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. When rescuers climbed aboard, they found signs of a strange drama in the ship's last moments -- and no trace of the 11-man crew. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll examine the curious case of the Carroll A. Deering, which has been called "one of the enduring mysteries of maritime history." We'll also experiment with yellow fever and puzzle over a disputed time of death. Intro: Benoni Lanctot's 1867 Chinese and English Phrase Book is not a model of cross-cultural comity. Episode 212: Max Joseph - Catfish, Leadership, Making It Count, & Pete Berg Max Joseph is one of the creative minds behind MTV's Catfish and the director of the indie film We Are Your Friends, has teamed up with the social media app Vero to launch a new documentary series, Charismatic Thinker.  He started as an editor, then become a director. He has written, directed, or produced over 64 short films including commercials and web videos. He worked with Casey Nesitat for his famous video for Nike titled, "Make It Count."  It has received more than 25,000,000 views. Recently, he released his latest documentary, DICKS: Do you need to be one to be a successful leader?  It has received critical acclaim and I highly recommend it. (We discussed "the making" of that film during this conversation).   Show Notes: Sustained Excellence = Understanding the importance of leading and managing Why make the film about leadership? Max is a nice guy, not a bully... Was one of the bullied He thought, "If I were a dick, would I be more popular?" "Do I need to be a dick to be a good leader?" As the director it is sink or swim... "You're thrown into it. I did not learn how to lead or manage." Sports can be an education in leadership -- If you don't have that growing up, how do you learn how to lead? A Disagreeable Giver -- (Adam Grant) -- Most reduced form of the film. As a protective measure, that is the lesson in being a great leader "I do think you need to, not be a dick, but turn off the empathy meter some..." A leader must Prioritize the greater vision Why he wanted to talk to Pete Berg ("I thought he would say, "You need to be a dick to be a good leader.") Most people said you didn't need to be one to be successful.  Max was looking for someone who said the opposite. His paradigm -- "You need to be a good coach" "All great leaders have a very strong backbone" Max's parents were too supportive "Being a dick is about ego... You're a dick if you're putting people down just to do it." How to make a living as a smart creative:  "I've always wanted to do this. I love all aspects of filmmaking. I went to Hollywood after college to do this." First job was cutting reels for directors -- "Look you're not the next Spielberg, but can you make this DVD?" "I was a curious, excited, young filmmaker" How did he get the job on Catfish? He emailed Neev after the movie came out... The other guy who was supposed to film and be on the TV show dropped out at the last second. Max said yes and the rest is history (6 seasons, 99 episodes) Read the book: The Surrender Experiment "Every time I surrender to my passion, something amazing happens" "Editing is like being a doctor. You need to put things back together after tearing them apart." "I've had to get better at not being a hero" The famous Nike "Make It Count" video with Casey Neistat Max got to LA 13 years ago. Initially he was unhappy. He hated it. He took a vacation backpacking through Europe and thought, "I love editing, there is real passion there" "Just focus on enjoying one thing I love and that will be enough to sustain happiness" Casey called him and asked him to be his first editor He asked him to fly to New York and then travel the world for the Nike video Casey got a tattoo during it... "Do More" Embrace the adventure... Let the project grow from it Advice: "Everyone has a gift... Has a genius for something. I get really unhappy if I don't do what I love for at least an hour a day" Read Big Magic by Liz Gilbert Look up Max on YouTube and Vero Social Media: See why over 468,000 people follow Max on Twitter: @maxjoseph Watch: Make It Count Connect with me on LinkedIn Join our Facebook Group: The Learning Leader Community To Follow Me on Twitter: @RyanHawk12 More Learning: Episode 078: Kat Cole – From Hooters Waitress To President of Cinnabon Episode 071: NateBoyer - Green Beret, Texas Football, The NFL Episode 179: How To Sustain Excellence - The Best Answers From 178 Questions Episode 107: Simon Sinek – Leadership: It Starts With Why Episode edited by the great J Scott Donnell The Learning Leader Show is supported by Rhone.  Use the code "Leader" for 15% off.  Rhone... premium activewear engineered with principle, performance and progress for the modern man.  Rhone builds clothing around 3 main tenants: Cutting-edge Performance, Premium Comfort, and Simplistic Style.

Max Joseph is a filmmaker, director, and the co-host of Catfish, which has just completed its fifth season on MTV. Max got his start in online video but has also worked extensively on documentaries and feature films. He is the creator of the powerful and beautiful promotional videos Make It Count (for the Nike FuelBand and starring Casey Neistadt) and Follow the Frog (for the Rainforest Alliance) and he also directed the 2015 feature film We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Efron. Max grew up in New York City, the only child of hardworking parents who were creative at heart. He grew up hoping to enjoy his day-to-day work more than his parents did, and was inspired by his cousin, who worked for Jim Henson, to follow his creative dreams. He realized at the age of 15 that he wanted to be a filmmaker. To this day he considers himself first and foremost a filmmaker (regardless of whether his work is released online or in theatres) and he calls his time on Catfish "a fun detour in an otherwise obsessive moviemaking career". He considers himself a "dreamer" (in contrast to people like Casey Neistadt, who he calls a "doer") because he sees his job as developing a creative vision which he can then hire and direct other people to develop into a reality. On this episode of the podcast, Max discusses his philosophy and methodology for great filmmaking. He generally gets started with a general concept or even just a "vibe" and a general end goal, and then follows his creative urges to build a great product. He believes strongly in the idea that great concept + great execution = great art and follows this principle in his work. He talks, for example, about how the Make It Count video was built around a very simple concept -- use Nike's money to travel the world and thereby "make it count" -- and thoughtful execution, carefully blending video clips, music, text, and more to create a powerful flow of ideas from start to finish. In short, Max's goal is always to make "the coolest thing ever", no matter how he has to go about doing that. Max is also a strong proponent of working together with other creative minds to build stronger, more balanced, and more interesting products. He discusses his own experiences with mentoring, collaboration, and other ways of learning from the people around him. He has worked with clients, professionals, corporations, and nonprofits and has learned the best ways to make any collaboration successful. If you're interested in taking the art of filmmaking, online video, or any other creative pursuit to a higher, more successful, or more fulfilling level, you need to hear this podcast. You'll learn about following your curiosity, asking the right questions, getting paid to learn your craft, which things are better learned in a classroom, connecting with the right mentors and collaborators, and much more. Join me in this conversation with Max Joseph and let your creative spirit soar! Quotes from the podcast: "I like putting puzzles together. I started editing and I love just being in a room and playing around with pieces until they fit together in the right way. And once I get them right, that's when I'm in my flow creatively and that's when I'm probably most happy." "Guilt is not viral. Making people feel guilty when they watch something is not going to end in them wanting to share it with anyone. You don't want to share something that bums out your friends. You want to share something that makes them smile.... There's a way to marry the two, though, so it works." "That feeling of 'You are not alone' is maybe the most important part of any video or piece of content because that's where the audience gets on board. And then once they're on board you can take them on a wild ride." "Follow your curiosity. If you have an idea... do it, and do it with all your heart and soul." "Do weird jobs. Get paid to learn your craft and treat each exercise as a challenge to make... the most awesome, best thing ever, despite any challenge that anyone's giving you. The more constraints and challenges, the more you'll learn how to get around them." Thanks to our contributor Edi Gonzalez for writing this description!
