Since we've both gone our separate ways, it doesn't surprise me at all that Michelle has launched Michelle Smith Coaching to support professional women find success and work-life balance. In this episode of The Brainy Business podcast, guest Leidy Klotz shares his research on the psychology of subtraction and its importance in decision-making and problem-solving. Klotz discusses how our natural instinct is to add rather than subtract when trying to improve a situation, and he provides insights into why this is the case. He explains that humans have a desire to display competence, and adding to a situation is a visible way to demonstrate that we can deal with the world effectively. However, Klotz argues that we can also display competence through subtracting, but it may require more effort to make it noticeable. He shares studies conducted with LEGO structures, itineraries, recipes, and computer grids, which consistently showed that people overwhelmingly choose to add rather than subtract. The episode explores concepts such as loss aversion and the IKEA effect, which contribute to our preference for adding. The conversation also touches on the concepts of minimalism and essentialism, and how subtracting can be a powerful tool for displaying competence and achieving goals effectively. Listeners will gain valuable insights into the psychological biases that hinder effective decision-making and problem-solving, and learn practical strategies to prioritize and achieve what truly matters.  In this episode: Discover the pivotal role subtraction plays in effective decision-making and problem-solving. Learn how our instinctive preference for addition can obstruct optimal solutions. Grasp how to confront biases and initiate shifts towards a subtractive mindset. Understand the immense benefits of streamlining and eliminating needless aspects of daily life. Acquire empowering strategies for integrating subtraction practices into your everyday living. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina Palmer introduces the episode and its focus on the power of subtraction with Dr. Leidy Klotz. She emphasizes the importance of optimization, reduction, and efficiency in various areas of life. 00:03:20 - Dr. Leidy Klotz's Background, Dr. Klotz shares his background in engineering and how his interest in sustainability led him to behavioral science. He highlights the overlap between engineering, architecture, and behavioral science in terms of creative application and design. 00:08:56 - Uncommon Paths to Behavioral Science, The conversation explores the diverse backgrounds of behavioral scientists, including Dr. Klotz's experience as a professional soccer player. They discuss how different disciplines, like marketing and sports, can contribute to the field of behavioral science. 00:11:50 - Personal Backgrounds and Professional Work, Melina and Dr. Klotz discuss how personal backgrounds, such as being an opera singer or playing basketball, can shape a person's approach to problem-solving. They highlight the value of diverse experiences in the field of behavioral science. 00:13:35 - Introduction to Subtract, Dr. Klotz introduces his book, Subtract, and explains how it explores the concept of subtraction as a means of optimization. He discusses the relationship between design, sustainability, and the creative application of behavioral science principles. 00:15:26 - The Instinct to Add, Leidy discusses how our first instinct when trying to improve something is to add, rather than subtract. This instinct is seen across various contexts, including LEGO structures and itineraries. The guest also mentions a study where people were given a task to make quadrants symmetrical and found that people overwhelmingly added blocks instead of removing them. 00:17:27 - Overlooking Subtraction, The guest explains that our tendency to overlook subtraction is due to various factors such as loss aversion, the endowment effect, and the IKEA effect. The book explores these factors and delves into the biological, cultural, and economic forces that contribute to our preference for adding. 00:18:47 - Science-Informed Strategies, Leidy discusses the latter half of the book, which focuses on utilizing science-informed strategies to get better at subtraction. By understanding the science behind our inclination to add, we can develop strategies to improve our ability to subtract. Leidy emphasizes the importance of creating a list of "stop doings" instead of solely focusing on a long list of to-dos. 00:21:06 - Minimalism and Essentialism, Leidy notes the connection between the book's concept of subtraction and minimalism and essentialism. He and Melina highlight the value of decluttering and getting rid of excess in order to display competence. Leidy also mentions the satisfaction that comes from having a focused to-do list with achievable tasks. 00:30:08 - The Importance of Subtraction, The conversation begins with the idea that subtraction is often overlooked in our society, and how we need to shift our mindset to value subtraction as much as addition. The guest, Leidy Klotz, mentions historical figures like Da Vinci and Lao Tzu who understood the importance of subtraction for design perfection and gaining wisdom. 00:31:01 - Subtraction as a Valuable Skill, Klotz discusses how his book aims to help people understand the science and stories behind subtraction, and encourages readers to adapt the principles to their own lives. He emphasizes the importance of subtracting first and how it can lead to better decision-making and problem-solving. 00:32:48 - Overcoming Challenges with Subtraction, Klotz addresses the challenges people face when considering subtraction, such as loss aversion and the fear of regret or guilt. He suggests mindset shifts, such as reframing subtraction as a positive improvement and emphasizing the benefits of subtracting. He also highlights the role of valence in perception and the value of thinking of add and subtract as complementary approaches. 00:35:53 - Add and Subtract, Klotz discusses the misconception that add and subtract are opposites and explains how they can coexist as complementary ways to make change. He encourages people to consider both options and think about the potential gains and losses associated with each. This mindset shift can lead to more effective decision-making and problem-solving. 00:44:27 - Introduction to the Book Work Well, Play More, Melina introduces the book Work Well, Play More by Marcey Rader, which builds upon the concepts of productivity and distraction introduced in "Indistractable." The book focuses on three areas: productivity, clutter, and health, providing a twelve-month approach to improve each area and reclaim time and mental well-being. 00:45:02 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. Find Your Clear Vision Podcast

Let's talk about bringing the power of manifestation into your professional work. We're going to do that by using these 3 methods: Creative process Visualization (like a vision board) Action   The word manifestation really means turning an idea into a reality. This is what finding your clear vision is all about.   To some, manifestation may sound a little too “self-help” or “woo-woo”, when in fact, manifestation refers to various pseudoscientific self-help strategies intended to bring about a personal goal, primarily by focusing one's thoughts upon the desired outcome. The techniques are based on the law of attraction of New Thought spirituality. Some of my most senior-level executives use manifestation and vision boarding to create their vision. I want this for you too.   For quite some time you might've dreamt of creating and building your professional legacy, thought leadership, or personal brand. Yet you may have relied on luck, hope, or law of attraction to make it happen (we BOTH know how that's turned out so far).   You may not be where you want to be personally or professionally, but at this moment in time, you are ready to take action. That is manifestation. In order to do that, you need to get super laser clear on what your vision looks like.   This is why I want you to join me for my last free masterclass of 2022. I'm going to be teaching you all about the neuroscience behind manifestation.   Why is that important?   Your professional opportunities will be endless when you learn how to master this skill. I'm also going to be teaching the 4 strategic steps to bring your vision to life, including creating an action plan. Because manifestation without action will never be more than just a dream.   If you're thinking “Oh yeah, I'M IN!” I'd love for you to join me in my Manifestation Masterclass happening September 13-15. You will get a personalized roadmap to make your dream into a reality. The Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist Sister Mary Kolbe and Sister Paula Jean Miller The Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist flows from our consecration to the Church within the Mystery of the Eucharist as the “Source and Summit” of the Christian Life. “In a world that knows the rupture between the Sacred and the secular, the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist endeavor in all their apostolic works to lead the people they serve to a restored sense of the Sacred. As a means to this end the Sisters' apostolic efforts in education, counseling, health care, care of the aging and manual work are directed to increasing a sense of the full meaning of the sacramental life of the Church.” Sister Paula Jean Miller, F.S.E., is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, whose motherhouse is in Meriden, Connecticut.  Sister Paula Jean received her license and doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Lateran in Rome, through the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C., in 1993.  Her teaching of marriage and family studies, the theology of the body, moral theology, sexuality, bioethics, and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, has spanned over 30 years in five seminaries, as well as the University of St. Thomas in Houston TX, where she founded, directed, and taught in a Catholic Studies Program. She now works in the Office of Canonical Affairs in the Diocese of Arlington, as Administrative Assistant to the Chancellor. Her research has focused on St. Bonaventure, communion ecclesiology, semiotics, and the thoughts of John Paul II, Benedict XVI., von Balthasar, and Maximus the Confessor. Publications include four books and numerous articles in theological journals. Books: Religious Life: A New and Special Bond, Chapter II: “The Spousal Bond”, Ave Maria Press, Notre Dame, Indiana, 2009. Members of One Body, Prophets, Priests and Kings: An Ecclesiology of Mission, Alba House, 1999. Marriage: The Sacrament of Divine-Human Communion, A Commentary on St. Bonaventure's Theology of Marriage, Franciscan Press, 1996. Mapping the Catholic Cultural Landscape, (editor), Rowman and Littlefield (Sheed and Ward), 2004. Sister Mary Kolbe Heffern, F.S.E, is a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist. After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of St. Thomas in Houston (where she was a student of Sister Paula Jean Miller, FSE), she entered the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. She completed an MA in Theology at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Connecticut and is a Montessori-trained Elementary guide. She has taught Religion, Spanish and Fourth Grade in Catholic elementary schools and currently teaches six-to-twelve-year-olds in the Montessori Elementary Environment at Siena Academy in Great Falls

Non-Professional Work On Your Resume - It Is Valid Experience

Develpreneur: Become a Better Developer and Entrepreneur

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2020 20:36

We often overlook the non-professional work we do in our life.  It is easy to throw work experience on our resume when we got paid.  However, what about volunteer work or maybe even side-effects of living our life?  There is life experience we can lean on at times that will even put us ahead of the competition for a job or project. Scheduling and Managing There are a lot of people in the technical world that are either not good, or they do not like management tasks.  That means the experience you have managing people and projects can be a way to separate from the pack.  These skills can come from running a large family, scheduling reunions, or managing a sports team.  You likely will have experience with "difficult conversations," whether it was telling a child "no" or cutting someone from tryouts. These are everyday tasks and roles among all of us.  However, many people fail to mention them.  That is an opportunity for you to highlight your skills and how you see them applying to a job.  These are areas where you can start a great conversation as well.  Throw a bit of your personality into those descriptions of your experience. A Place Of Its Own While these types of experience and skills are valuable, they still should be differentiated from professional experience.  It is always better to do something within your career.  On the other hand, we want credit for all we have done.  This obstacle is easy to overcome by providing a section on your brand site or resume that highlights your hobbies, pastimes, and non-professional work.  You can treat these as a job and give a description of the skills learned and used. Life Is Hard When I hear stories from others, I am often amazed at what they have overcome.  These challenges can make us a better employee in many ways.  Yes, some of your experiences can be held against you.  Nevertheless, those can often be a way to distinguish yourself and even impress those that are evaluating you.  Surviving a deadly disease or winning a blue ribbon for your culinary skills are among those things that are easy to leave off a resume.  However, they may be the extra edge you need. Episode Challenge: Update your resume or branding site with a personal section (hobbies, pastimes, sports, etc.). Read more about advancing your career.

One of the major pieces of feedback I’ve ever gotten in my career so far relates to managing my composure. I remember what day it was, where I was sitting, the tone of voice on the other end of the phone delivering it. It impacted me greatly. In today’s episode I talk about getting to know fellow coworkers - The fine line between expressing vulnerability, but also expressing your true authentic self in a professional work setting. Woah, a doozy right? I think you’ll find it interesting. This morning while listening to my teacher, Gabby Bernstein I heard this, “The world needs to see leaders vulnerable.” Hit me like a ton of bricks, and I couldn’t agree more. Whether you’re in a leadership setting or not, it’s important to find your authentic voice, and express your truth at work. Don't freak out, just hit play, and listen in for my tips. I really enjoy Andrew Benson's work, even if it is completely unlike anything that I would ever do myself. Maybe that's why I like it, right? Andrew embraces extremes in color, shape and glitchiness, and the result is immediately identifiable as his own. Having this unique voice has put him in the position of doing some impressive and interesting professional work, and I wanted to talk to him about the process - and the difficulties - in making these things happen. In podcast #19, Andrew talked about his background and influences, This time, he was kind enough to talk about some of his recent work, how he got the gigs, how he kept them, and how he made the decisions necessary to get the job done. He also talks about the process of moving when one has been part of a local art community (a thing close to my heart at the moment...) and how the tech is selected for a given piece or project. If you do art work of any sort, this podcast is going to be filled with information that will be important to you. So have a listen, check out Andrew's work at pixlpa.com, and use that info to jack your professional life a little bit. But one of the things that I came away with after talking with Andrew is "Don't Be Scared" - perhaps the best advice anyone could ever provide... Enjoy!
