In this episode of the Fully Charged Show Podcast, Imogen Bhogal sits down with Lars Reger, CTO of NXP Semiconductors, to explore the critical role that chips play in the electric vehicle revolution. With the average EV containing around 10,000 semiconductors - 10 times more than an combustion car, these tiny silicon components are doing some seriously heavy lifting — from power & energy management, control systems, security, connectivity to autonomous driving and increasing amounts of AI. NXP supplies chips to major automotive players around the globe, giving Lars a front-row seat to the transformation of electric mobility from the incumbents, to the new players and beyond. Together, they delve into what it really means to create a software-defined vehicle, the future of self-driving and the need for energy-efficient AI. Lars also shares what can be learnt from the global chip shortage and how it can be avoided from happening again. By 2030, approximately 45% of a car's cost will be attributed to the expense of integrated chips. As we envision a future firmly rooted in software-defined systems, a substantial portion of these expenses will be invested in silicon technology.Modern automobiles are equipped with thousands of microprocessors, emphasizing the critical role silicon plays in the industry. The chip shortages experienced during and after the COVID-19 pandemic compelled OEMs like Ford to sell vehicles lacking some secondary chip technology. As we progress towards a software-driven future in the automotive sector, spanning from heavy machinery manufacturers like Caterpillar and John Deere to consumer vehicle brands such as Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, VW, BMW, and more, it is imperative to strike the right balance between software-focused advancements and chip-enabled capabilities. The increasing focus on software-centricity necessitates a parallel enhancement of silicon capabilities, which will enable cars to sense, learn, react, and seamlessly communicate with one another, as well as with infrastructure elements like roads (V2X). Consequently, the automotive experience for consumers and fleet operators in 2032 will undergo a radical transformation. We are on the brink of the era of intelligent automobiles, where driving and our interactions with the surrounding environment will be unrecognizable compared to today's experiences. Chips and silicon represent indispensable components of this future. Our guest today, Ray Cornyn of NXP, leads the architectural development efforts at one of the world's premier silicon companies dedicated to the automotive industry.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

KLA Corporation and Lam Research are two of the top 5 companies in the semiconductor manufacturing equipment industry. Their recent financial updates didn't exactly set the world ablaze, but may have indicated that the semiconductor industry is ready to make a turnaround. What are we doing with this information here at Chip Stock Investor? Intel's disaster has been a saga for at least a year, and you may know we have not been interested in investing up to this point. But, their recent quarter results finally showed some signs of life and a possible turnaround. This might start to materially change things at Intel, and set up a more solid thesis for making an investment. STMicroelectronics is benefitting from the booming EV industry, and although NXP Semiconductors is more popular among some investors, STM had a really solid quarter and some potential for major growth in the EV market -- especially in silicon carbide. Finally, we will take a look at Enphase, a company we recently added to our portfolio. This company's earnings report showed signs of serious slowdown in the solar energy market, which to a certain extent was expected. But what are the long term prospects for ENPH, and are we buying the dip? Big tech companies such as Meta, Tesla, Microsoft and Alphabet have all reported quarterly earnings, and its been better than we hoped it would be. It looks like the earnings recession is over. If so, what does that mean for investors? Is now the time to invest? Lam Research and NXP Semiconductors both reported earnings, and the reports overall were as expected. Have we reached the bottom for the semiconductor industry? Will automotive drive the growth of the industry and pull it out of its slump? Its no secret, Cadence Design systems is one of our favorites here at Chip Stock Investor. Does their recent earnings report warrant the high praise and high valuation we have for it? All this is discussed on this Chip Stock Investor earnings roundup. ☕☕☕If you feel so inclined please show your support here by fueling our caffeine addiction

What is Thread? Jonathan Hui, Principal Software Engineer at Google and VP of Technology at Thread Group, joins Ryan Chacon on the IoT For All Podcast to discuss the Thread network protocol. They cover how Thread works, the differences between Thread and Wi-Fi, how Thread is improving the smart home, how Thread works with Matter, when not to use Thread, and the IoT challenges that Thread is solving. Jonathan Hui is a principal software engineer at Google, where he is responsible for Thread implementation in products and is maintainer of OpenThread released by Google. Prior to Google, he was a principal engineer at Cisco, where he built some of the world's largest IPv6 mesh networks for urban-scale, enterprise, and utility applications. He delivered the world's first commercial 6LoWPAN networks at Arch Rock before its acquisition by Cisco. Jonathan has also been deeply involved in standards bodies (IETF, IEEE, Thread, and Wi-SUN) and co-authored foundational specifications related to IPv6 in low-power wireless networks. He is also a co-inventor on more than 175 USPTO issued patents. Jonathan has a BS in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MS and a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. Formed in 2013, the non-profit Thread Group is focused on making Thread the foundation for the Internet of Things in homes and commercial buildings. Built on open standards, Thread is a low power wireless networking protocol that enables direct, end-to-end, secure, and scalable connectivity between IoT devices, mobile devices, and the internet. Because Thread is IP-based, it seamlessly integrates with many environments, apps, devices, and clouds. The Thread Group provides a rigorous certification program to ensure device interoperability and a positive user experience. Thread is backed by industry-leading companies including Amazon, Apple, Google Nest, Lutron, Nordic Semiconductors, NXP Semiconductors, OSRAM, Qualcomm, Siemens, Silicon Labs, Samsung SmartThings, Somfy, and Yale Security.

Farms use 70% of water for natural consumption, and half of it is lost. The ability to micro-control water consumption in very small and unique environments may be one of the most important developments in society. Multiply the ability to do this by the tens of millions of fields across the globe in easy and difficult places to reach, and technologies like small-footprint embedded devices might be part of changing our resources on the planet. Imagine this challenge and apply it to the thousands of industries and use cases around us where resource efficiency becomes an increasingly important priority. Our guest, Ron Martino of NXP, talks about the power of these 75bn connected devices to change the world of 2035 and beyond at a very practical level. This new edge economy could be at least $4 to $5 trillion by 2030, where 64 zettabytes of daily data are processed locally at the edge. In this case, at the micro point of the field where the water is being controlled. This is all additive to the traditional core economy.
