Vanya Vaidehi Bhargav's book Being Hindu, Being Indian: Lala Lajpat Rai's Ideas of Nationhood (Penguin Random House India, 2024) undertakes a systematic intellectual study of Lala Lajpat Rai's nationalist thought through four decades of his active political life, lived between 1888 and 1928. It contests the dominant scholarly interpretation of Lajpat Rai's nationalist thought as the nascent stage of Savarkarite Hindutva, and highlights the internally differentiated nature of ‘Hindu Nationalism'. Showing that, by 1915, Lajpat Rai moved towards ‘Indian' nationalist narratives, it challenges the assumption that all ideas of Hindu nationhood necessarily culminate in Hindutva. An examination of Lajpat Rai's final nationalist narrative as a Hindu Mahasabha leader in the 1920s confirms the revisionist historiographical rejection of the oppositional binary that was long drawn between Hindu communal politics, on one hand, and secular Indian nationalism and secularism, on the other. Lajpat Rai organized a Hindu politics in service of a secular Indian nation-state. Nevertheless, the book pushes back against revisionist assumptions that Hindu communal politics and secularism can be championed together comfortably, and that the articulation of a Hindu politics alongside a vision for secularism reduces that secularism to little more than Hindu majoritarianism. Being Hindu, Being Indian argues for the need to take the analytical tension and contrast between ‘Hindu politics' and ‘secularism' seriously. Methodologically, the book constitutes an argument to resist reductionism and respect the nuances, complexities, fluidity, and internal tensions in an individual thinker's thought. Dr. Vanya Vaidehi Bhargav is an intellectual historian of modern South Asia, with interests in nationalism, secularism, and religious and political thought more broadly. After receiving a DPhil in History from the University of Oxford, she was a post-doctoral research fellow at the “Multiple Secularities” Research Group at the University of Leipzig in Germany, and at ICAS: M.P. in New Delhi, India. Back in 2019, we started the Grand Tamasha podcast on a whim. India's 2019 general elections were around the corner, and we sensed that there might be a (temporary) marketplace for a weekly audio podcast focused on Indian politics and policy for diehards hoping to keep up with the campaign action. Nearly five years later, the podcast has become a weekly fixture and the marketplace has turned out to be more welcoming that we had imagined. For Milan, one of the joys of doing a podcast week-in and week-out is the ability to read some of the best new books on India and speak with their authors—from journalists to historians, and political scientists to novelists. Last year, we published our first annual list of our favorite books featured on the podcast in 2022. As the current year comes to an end and we prepare for a mini-podcast hibernation for the holidays, here—in no particular order—are our Grand Tamasha top books of 2023 (drumroll, please):Shadows at Noon: The South Asian Twentieth CenturyBy Joya Chatterji. In this episode, Anurag Basnet speaks about his stint in the publishing industry, his love for translations and his much-lauded work ‘ Fruits of the Barren Tree', which is translated from the award-winning Nepali novel ‘Phoolange' written by author Lekhnath Chetri. ‘Fruits of the Barren Tree' depicts the plight of an ordinary man caught in the Gorkhaland movement of the late 1980s, which focused on creating a separate state out of the Darjeeling region. It is the story of a failed campaign and a cautionary tale of how easily the contagion of violence can infect a community. Anurag Basnet is an editor and translator based in Noida, Delhi. He has been associated with the publishing industry for fifteen years, with stints at Penguin Random House India, Rupa Publications and Speaking Tiger. Manan Kapoor talks about the Ghazal, the medieval Arabic poetic form which travelled to the Indian subcontinent in the 12th century and flourished there ever since. He focuses on the work of Agha Shahid Ali, the Kashmiri-American poet who perfected the art of the ghazal in the English language. Kapoor's biography of Shahid, A Map of Longings, was published earlier this year. Particular references are made to the poem “In Arabic” from Shahid's collection Call me Ishmael Tonight, the ghazals sung by Begum Akhtar which greatly influenced Shahid's work, and English ghazals written by poets like Adrienne Rich which he critiqued. Manan Kapoor is an Indian writer and translator. A Map of Longings: The Life and Works of Agha Shahid Ali (Vintage, Penguin Random House India) is his latest work. His debut novel The Lamentations of a Sombre Sky was shortlisted for Sahitya Akademi's Yuva Puruskar 2017. In 2019, he was a writer-in-residence at Sangam House Writers' Residency. Some episodes are special and make you do something you've never done before. We found it extremely difficult to edit portions of this raw and vulnerable and courageous conversation with poet & author, Megha Rao. This unedited 90minute conversation is divided into 2 parts and will be released over 2 different episodes. Our guest this week on the Absolutely write podcast is Megha Rao, a confessional performance poet and a surrealist artist. Her work has been featured on platforms such as Penguin Random House India, Firstpost, The Open Road Review, New Asian Writing, The Alipore Post, Spoken Fest, Why Indian Men Rape and Thought Catalog. Megha is a postgraduate in English Literature from the University of Nottingham, UK. Megha started writing when she was six, beginning with comic books. What started as speech bubbles soon turned into short stories, and then novels. She is a podcaster and the author of multiple books, teething being her latest. Aditi analyses Megha's handwriting and decodes her multilingual signature and talks about the parallel of the two dots in her signature and her life. She also talks about the strokes that depict Megha's fierce honesty. Megha narrates a poem from her latest book - 'Teething' and shares some amazing tips for budding writers and creators.
