Congratulations on making it to the end of another week. To celebrate this milestone, I've got another round of updates for you on what's happening at the intersection of business, tech, and human experience. As always, thanks to the community of you who contribute to the list. Samsung 6-Day Workweek - Despite the EU's extensive data on the success of a 4-day workweek, Samsung is opting to experiment with effort in the opposite direction. As they wrestle through some business challenges, they recently mandatory 6-day weeks for their execs. While there's a lot to unpack here, I have a sneaking suspicion they won't get the results they're hoping for. Meta Llama 3 - While Winamp was known for whipping Llamas, this week Meta's Llama 3 hit back like a truck. If you haven't heard, Meta is making waves in the GenAI news with their recent release of Llama 3. While their earnings may have dampened some of the energy, this release is impressive. And, it's not just benchmarks that had their hair blown back. Humans are equally impressed. Google Gemini Agents—The AI agents are coming! Google made some big announcements at this year's Google Cloud Next event, and one of them was their advancement in AI agents. While I don't see it as the human labor ender that some do, the days of being frustrated with a chatbot that can't answer any of the real questions you have or do anything, even if it does, may soon be behind us. Anthropic AI Persuasiveness Research - If you're confident you won't be influenced by AI, think again. While I'd still argue AI itself isn't persuasive, the data is clear that it's reaching a point where its ability to create persuasive content is at and soon surprising the average person. This is especially concerning as we think about the rapid rise of misinformation and deepfakes. Here's a teaser for you, the best defense isn't a technological solution. And with that, have a wonderful weekend. Show Notes: In this episode, Christopher discusses various topical themes related to technology, AI, and workplace culture. He begins by addressing Samsung's new mandate for executives to work six days a week, voicing concerns about burnout and the effectiveness of such practices in a time of economic uncertainty. Lind then explores Meta's launch of Llama 3, an AI model which impresses with its abilities in image generation and language processing, and hints at the potential shifts in the AI landscape. The conversation shifts to Google's advancements in AI agents, pointing to a future where these agents could significantly impact professional and consumer interactions through their advanced problem-solving capabilities. Lastly, Lind delves into a study by Anthropic on AI persuasiveness, warning of the potential risks and emphasizing the need for deeply held beliefs to navigate the complexities and deceits possible in the age of artificial intelligence. Throughout, Lind advocates for careful consideration of how technology is advancing and its implications for human work, experience, and ethics. 00:00 - Welcome to the Future Focused Weekly Update 01:49 - The Samsung Six-Day Work Week Controversy 09:32 - Meta's Leap Forward in Generative AI with Llama 3 16:54 - Google's Game-Changing AI Agents 27:17 The Persuasive Power of AI: A Deep Dive 35:51 Closing Thoughts on Truth in the Age of AI #samsung #genai #influence #chatbot #ai

Back in 2018, Dario Amodei worked at OpenAI. And looking at one of its first A.I. models, he wondered: What would happen as you fed an artificial intelligence more and more data?He and his colleagues decided to study it, and they found that the A.I. didn't just get better with more data; it got better exponentially. The curve of the A.I.'s capabilities rose slowly at first and then shot up like a hockey stick.Amodei is now the chief executive of his own A.I. company, Anthropic, which recently released Claude 3 — considered by many to be the strongest A.I. model available. And he still believes A.I. is on an exponential growth curve, following principles known as scaling laws. And he thinks we're on the steep part of the climb right now. When I've talked to people who are building A.I., scenarios that feel like far-off science fiction end up on the horizon of about the next two years. So I asked Amodei on the show to share what he sees in the near future. What breakthroughs are around the corner? What worries him the most? And how are societies that struggle to adapt to change and governments that are slow to react to them supposed to prepare for the pace of change he predicts? Of course, we must make the truth our goal, but simply having the right conclusion is insufficient, at least if we are attempting to bring others around to our point of view or over to our side. In the first part of this passage when Paul gets to Ephesus he runs into twelve men whom he calls disciples. Which is great except for one thing. The problem surrounding these men was similar to that of Apollos when he first came to Ephesus. These men don't really know Jesus because they haven't been baptized by the Holy Spirit. But this brings up some questions, how could they be called disciples, essentially Christians, and not know Jesus or have been baptized by the Holy Spirit? Is that even possible? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing the African EA Forum Competition - $4500 in prizes for excellent EA Forum Posts, published by Luke Eure on May 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The Effective Altruism Forum serves as the main platform for thought leadership and experience sharing within the effective altruism movement. It is the virtual gathering spot for EAs and the space where most EAs will go to check for resources, materials and experiences for various areas of interest. However, there are low levels of authorship by EAs from Africa, which gives the impression that not much is happening in the African space with regards to EA - despite there being 10+ local EA groups in Africa. There is a need for increased thought leadership, experience sharing, and engagement from an African perspective that reflects the growth of EA in Africa and brings African perspectives to the wider EA community. To get more Africans writing on the forum, I'm excited to announce the African EA Forum Competition. How it works Prizes will be awarded for winners and runners up in each of three categories: Cause exploration: Explorations of new cause areas or contribution to thinking on existing cause areas African perspectives on EA: Posts that challenge or complement existing EA perspectives and/or cause areas from an African worldview Summaries of existing work: Informing the EA community about ongoing/completed research projects, sharing experiences within community groups, or reflections on being in EA Top prize in each category will be awarded $1,000. Runner up in each category will get $500. No need to include the category in your submission. Judging Posts will be judged based on the following rubric: Originality of insight Clarity Discussion provoked: (judged by the post's forum score and number of comments) Persuasiveness of argument This is replaced by Relevance to forum readers for summaries of existing work The members of our judging panel are: Alimi Salifou - Events and Outreach Coordinator for EA Nigeria Jordan Pieters - independent community builder Kaleem Ahmid - Project Manager at Effective Ventures Dr. Kikiope Oluwarore - co-founder of Healthier Hens Zainab Taonga Chirwa - Chairperson for Effective Altruism UCT Support offered to writers We will support writers in the following two ways: Virtual training on EA Forum writing: there will be a ~1-2 hour workshop to build the capacity of individuals interested in writing forum posts Offering mentorship: curating a list of individuals who are happy to offer feedback to new writers to bolster the confidence of those writing about their posts, especially those who may feel intimidated by the seemingly high bar of forum posts Writers do not have to attend the forum or receive mentorship to be eligible for the competition. They only have to make a forum post within the competition period, and meet the eligibility criteria below. Please fill out this form if you would like to join the workshop or receive mentorship. Who is eligible Anybody who is: a citizen of an African country a children of a citizen of an Africa country Posts should be made to the EA forum with the tag ‘Africa EA Forum Competition' to make them easy to find, and then the writer should identify themself by filling out this form. Persuasion is a key psychological component of life.In order to persuade someone, Cindy details the three key characteristics related to persuasiveness: authority, honesty, and likeability. Confidence, eye contact, and honesty are all important but Cindy also stresses that people are more likely to agree with someone they like. Likeability often tips the scales of persuasion.Cindy explains that the need to belong within a community often drives people to reject clear facts in favor of a stubborn perspective. Nobody wants to be seen as going against the crowd in case of losing social ties. She advises to form a community with the person you want to persuade and let the idea you're presenting become their own idea. Study those at your work who advance and those who don't. How can you persuade people and your team more effectively? Persuasiveness essentially boils down to two things: expertise and trustworthiness. Expertise describes whether someone is worth listening to; that is how intelligent and knowledgeable the person is about the subject at hand. Trustworthiness describes whether someone should be listened to; that is whether the person has your best interests at heart. To boil it down a little further, expertise is whether they have the knowledge, trustworthiness is whether they are using that knowledge to help you.

Linguistic intelligence is vital to the study of law. A key element of linguistic intelligence is the ability to devise and deploy persuasive arguments. Persuasiveness, however, is an altogether different standard to accuracy. Persuasiveness is primarily contingent on the argumentative skills of the advocate: poor skills will translate into a poor argument even if the logic underpinning the position is sound. In this episode, I detail a strategy for building sound and convincing arguments. My preference is for the RIREAC form: Reference – Issue – Rule – Explanation – Application – Conclusion. There are others (IRAC / ILAC are more popular) and I have met people who prefer to adopt bespoke forms (HOPP: Hunch – Optimistic View – Pessimistic View – Provocative View). Regardless as to which form(s) you opt for, practice is essential and I encourage you to experiment with a variety of strategies before settling on your preferred.

Tony Wrighton is one of those guys who is talented in a number of areas. You may know him best from his role on Sky Sports, or perhaps from his podcast, Zestology. Tony loves to study the issue of human performance and is also a licensed NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) practitioner. This episode features Ari's conversation with Tony about NLP, how it can be used to be more persuasive, and what you can do to apply NLP practices to your own life. It's an intriguing conversation that is definitely worth your time. ## There's nothing worse than a bad NLPer. ~ Tony Wrighton As Ari and his guest, Tony Wrighton chatted about NLP, Ari asked what makes NLP persuasion techniques different than flat-out manipulation. Tony responded that every form of communication, in some way, is a form of manipulation - but it's how you go about it and the motives behind it that make all the difference. He said NLP can definitely be misused in that regard. In his words, “There's nothing worse than a bad NLPer.” You can learn how Tony uses NLP practices to encourage others and empower his own life, in this conversation. ## A simple example of NLP persuasion in communication, on this episode. Tony Wrighton demonstrated how NLP can be applied to everyday conversations through the use of the word “might” when making a request. “Dear, I wonder if you might bring me a cup of coffee?” Tony says the insertion of “might” into the sentence softens the request so that it sounds less like a command and more of a kind-hearted request. Psychologically, that kind of request falls more gracefully on the thoughts of the hearer and raises fewer objections. It's a simple technique that is second nature to Tony by now. You can hear more examples of how NLP can be used to increase the effectiveness of your daily communication, on this episode. ## Energy levels and happiness can increase by unplugging. At the end of every episode of Leverage Ari asks his guests for their top 3 tips for increased productivity. Today's guest, Tony Wrighton said that he's noticed a greater degree of happiness and energy in his own life by turning off his phone for at least 2 hours every day. Can you imagine what it might be like to have NO notifications ringing in your ear for a portion of every day? If not, you might need to try what Tony's suggesting. Tony shares some insightful tips from his experience as an NLP coach and broadcaster, on this episode of Leverage. ## Tracking things tangibly is one of the best ways to know what to tweak in your life. We've all been at the point in life where we know something needs to change, but we're not sure exactly what it is. One of the ways Tony Wrighton suggests discovering where to make the incremental tweaks in your life is to tangibly track things, using a spreadsheet. Sleep, exercise, nutrition, and many other aspects of personal life can be logged in ways that enable you to know exactly what's going on in your life and how it correlates to increased or decreased energy levels, mental clarity, and other vital things for performance. Be sure you listen to this episode to hear Tony's tips. ## Outline of This Episode - [0:03] Ari's introduction of Tony and how he got into NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programing). - [1:55] How NLP plays out practically in language and interactions. - [3:20] The difference between persuasion and manipulation - and how NLP persuades. - [6:14] How Tony has integrated NLP practices into his sportscasting. - [7:31] The use of performance tracking/NLP to help people gain more self-awareness. - [12:00] Tips for NLP-ing yourself[ - [14:20] Tony's top 3 pieces of advice for being more productive. ## Resources Mentioned - [www.TonyWrighton.com](http://www.TonyWrighton.com) - Tony's podcast: [Zestology](http://www.tonywrighton.com/zestology/) - [Sleepcycle](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sleep-cycle-alarm-clock/id320606217?mt=8) - [The Oura Ring](https://ouraring.com/) - BOOK: [10% Happier](ht --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lessdoing/message

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 14, 2016 32:36

Sarah Ferguson is a journalist and author. Last year, ABC television screened her three-part documentary series The Killing Season, which examined the forces that shaped the Australian Labor Party during the recent years in which Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard led the party, and the nation. Based on Sarah's lengthy and insightful interviews with key political players, and filmed with the drama and style of the Netflix series House Of Cards, it was pitch-perfect television that resonated strongly across the country, attracting around a million viewers each episode. The series further established Sarah's reputation as one of Australia's finest television interviewers and presenters. Since 2008, she has worked as an award-winning investigative journalist on current affairs program Four Corners – which she currently hosts – as well as filling in for Leigh Sales as the host of 7.30 in 2014, and conducting several hard-hitting political interviews during that time. In 2016, Sarah became an author with The Killing Season Uncut. Co-written with series researcher Patricia Drum and published in April by Melbourne University Publishing, Sarah's book goes behind the scenes to candidly reveal the stories behind the interviews with Rudd, Gillard and a host of other key players. I found that her asides into the craft of journalism were a highlight of the book, such as this quote: "The business of persuasion is a fraught one for journalists. Persuasiveness is one thing, bullshit is another. You have to understand your subject intimately and what their purpose is in speaking on camera. I prefer candour but it's not enough by itself. And you are not friends, although it can appear that way. The line you shouldn't cross is usually only visible when it's behind you." When Sarah was on a day trip to Brisbane in early May, we met at her inner-city hotel room so that I could ask her a few questions before she had to dash off to a radio interview across town. It was a thrill to be sitting across from one of the country's most formidable journalistic brains; within a few minutes, she had called me out for incorrectly attributing a quote from the book to her, rather than Julia Gillard. Our conversation touches on how her writing style has developed across her career; her early writing influences, including her love of poetry; how she comes up with ideas for her Four Corners stories; why she posted a Julia Gillard quote above her desk; who she turns to when she's having trouble with a story; and how she decided to open a live budget night interview on 7.30 with a particularly devastating question for then treasurer Joe Hockey. Sarah Ferguson is an author and ABC journalist. In the same year that she worked on The Killing Season, she also wrote and presented Hitting Home, the landmark series on domestic violence. She has presented the ABC's 7.30 and worked as a journalist on Four Corners, where she won four Walkleys – including the Gold Walkley in 2011 for 'A Bloody Business' – the Melbourne Press Club Gold Quill Award, four Logies for most outstanding public affairs report, as well as the George Munster Award for Independent Journalism and the Queensland Premier's Literary Award.
