From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): Sept. 4, 2022. It was the day Triston Casas made his major league debut, playing for the Red Sox at Fenway Park against the Rangers. Exactly one year later, Casas has had quite a journey, one that allowed him to celebrate his one year in the big leagues with a game-changing three-run homer and RBI single. Ed Pienta (pee-n-tah) has struggled with his weight since grade school. Everyone called him Husky, and family and friends made excuses for his weight by saying "He was always big boned." He was always active playing sports but always found food as a reward. His childhood doctor even prescribed drugs for weight control. As he entered adulthood, he tried several hospital programs and also Weight Watchers, losing 75 lbs., but continued to struggle with emotional eating, snacking all day, and eating fast food. The rollercoaster of losing and gaining weight continued, and then on Jan. 1st, 2022, the time was right to retire. Almost 70 years old and 252 lbs, he decided to get fit and healthy. Living now in a 55+ community with many options to be active, he decided to work out by walking and swimming. In 10 months, his weight went down to 240 lbs, but then plateaued. Feeling frustrated, he joined a group weighing in weekly at the Lodge; being held accountable might be an answer. After little progress, he met a woman named Phyliss, noticing she had lost a considerable amount of weight. She said she was Intermittent Fasting. He had tried IF in the past but gave up after not seeing any progress after 2 weeks. Phyliss said "Give it time." He started fasting that day with a 16:8 program. Ed purchased Gin Stephens Fast Feast Repeat and Graeme Currie's The Fasting Highway books. Graeme's book had an author picture, but Ed felt something was different. After several weeks of 16:8, he moved to 20:4 and saw some progress in the way his clothes fit and how good he was feeling. He began eating healthier while still eating things he liked. No counting points or carbs. While feeling better and clothes fitting better, he started to see weight coming off. On March 31, 2023, the scale read 198.8 -- the first time he was under 200 lbs in 50+ years! He now continues his quest to 185 lbs or so and is more active than ever, swimming 30 laps every other day and walking 2 to 3 miles a day. On May 21st he will play baseball for the first time since 1999 in a 65+ league. It's now the middle of May, and while the weight loss has slowed a bit, fluctuating plus/minus 3-5 pounds, he is not worrying. About it, he considers Graeme's book the driving force for a lot of his success. Another Thursday has landed on your calendar, which means the boys from the Real Life Podcast are back with another hour of nonsense and (maybe) some Oilers talk to wrap up your week. On today's show, the guys talked about Nuge hitting 100 points, buying tickets to the Masters, and a whole lot more.To kick off the Thursday episode of Real Life, the guys got started with a look at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins hitting 100 points last night against the Anaheim Ducks. Before the guys even got rolling on the RNH talk, the guys got distracted by talk of the Avatar guy that lives in Edmonton and whether or not he regrets tattooing himself blue. As you'll hear, this conversation went on for probably way too long as Baggedmilk and Wanye wouldn't let it go. Getting back to the Oilers, the guys wondered what to expect over the final three games of the season. Will Jay Woodcroft rest his big guys down the stretch? Changing gears, the guys spent some time talking about whether or not Jay can hit a ball out of Re/Max Field if given a metal bat and a pitching machine putting balls into his wheelhouse. Lastly, the guys wrapped up the podcast with a little bit of Big Brother talk, more nonsense, and an attempt to stick to only one topic. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The residential real estate market directly or indirectly impacts everyone. After all, everyone is born short a house. Home prices and construction activity also largely impact economic growth, wealth, inflation, and, for fixed income investors, residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS). With the market suddenly in a downturn, should investors be prepared for lower house prices and rents? Declines in home construction and sales? Increased delinquencies and defaults on mortgages? In this episode of All the Credit®, Kaustub Samant, Head of Mortgage Credit Research at PGIM Fixed Income, reviews the current state of the residential real estate market, along with the recent history of home price appreciation (HPA) and changes in rental rates. Mr. Samant examines trends in the market and affordability issues, and the looming decline of residential prices and rents. We also discuss implications for GDP and inflation, mortgage default vulnerabilities, and shifts we've made within the capital structure in lieu of changes in the market for mortgage-related fixed income securities. South Africa is way behind the curve when it comes to early-stage venture-backed businesses. The country has not managed to excite the global venture capital community in the same way that other African countries like Nigeria and Kenya. To address this lag, the Local Scale Up programme was launched in 2021 by Endeavor, an international company with a local presence that promotes high-growth entrepreneurs, and the SA SME Fund. The programme supports a cohort of early stage tech start-ups and help them access markets, mentors and capital. The managing director of Endeavor in South Africa, Alison Collier, told BizNews the companies in the programme have seen excellent growth and are expected to deliver R3 billion in revenue by the end of the year. Job growth has almost doubled in the last six months. The SA SME Fund's Ketso Gordhan told BizNews about the pitfalls of grant funding and said venture capital in South Africa was about driving costs down, but in South Africa it is geared to solving crucial societal problems. – Linda van Tilburg Learn more about your ad choices. The sermon opens with a piece of a Hidden America episode about the sacrificial generosity and dedication of a generally unsung hero of the Revolutionary War named Thomas Nelson. Pastor Galen then walks through modern examples of courage under pressure, standing for one's beliefs, and words from the founding fathers, themselves, about how intertwined our Faith and the principles of our nation truly are.
Josh & Ravi talks about how the B1G news could effect Nebraska.
Live from the No Panic Zone—I'm Steve Gruber—I am America's Voice—God Bless America—God Bless You and let's do this! This is the Steve Gruber show— the Ultra MAGA express train to truth! Get on lets roll! Here are three big things you need to know right now— ONE— Russia is losing in Ukraine—and they are also running out of soldiers and missiles—depending on who you trust on the matter— TWO— News today—of yet another Democrat Senator suffering a stroke—that will leave him out of action for at least a week or two—what is going on with so many Dems stroking out? THREE— The babies of the nation are screaming again today—because the lack of baby formula nationwide is hitting home OR maybe it's because Joe Biden is President which would make most grown men cry—Just not me—it makes me angry— and it makes me steadfast and I want you to embrace the same resolve I have today —because my friends we are not going to take back this country sitting on the damn couch! We must stand up—we must be proud and we must be heard! Are you with me? It is time to stand up and be heard my friends—it is time to tell Joe Biden—Bernie Sanders—Nancy Pelosi—Barack Obama—AOC—The squad— and the rest of the Socialists clamoring to put the globalists in charge of the United States—we are not buying it— not one bit— The laundry list of failures grows by the day—the failing economy—and the soaring inflation—driving average gas prices above $6 a gallon in California—and above $5 dollars a gallon in several more states— We are truly at a watershed moment my friends and the question you have to ask—is are you going to sit there and run your mouth—and tap out mean messages on social media—or are you going to get into the arena—just like the 26th President of the United States—Teddy Roosevelt talked about— Are you willing to roll up your sleeves—get dirty—get knocked down and get back up? Because I can guarantee you this—I have been watching the left my entire life—and they never quit—no matter how badly they get crushed in elections like 1994 or 2010—they re-group and they start leaching back into the national conversation again— Like your favorite leftist whack job and mine—Neil Young told us—Rust Never Sleeps—and neither do socialists—they will be putting together new rent-a-riots for this coming weekend—to declare America a horrible—racist and unfair place—while at the same time rationalizing the dismemberment of full term babies as somehow protected under the Constitution— they will do that for political power—because they have no shame— It is time my friends to reject the failure of this President and his administration to make sure there is enough formula to feed our nation's children— and enough strength to take this nation back— It's time— We must reject gas prices at all time record highs while the socialists are crushing the American energy sector –that should be setting the standard for the rest of the world— Reject censorship—human trafficking—a dishonest national media—an unchecked invasion at the southern border— Its time to say we will not allow you to teach our kids to hate each other amy more—we will say no to defunding the police and weak willed George Soros prosecutors—who release violent criminals and step aside as violent crime explodes and blood runs in our streets like never before— We will not blindly follow you to war in Ukraine, Somalia or anywhere else—we reject the Ministry of Truth and the idea that the government can do anything better than the rest of us—except to build machines to kill—on a mass scale— We flatly reject government surveillance of our phones, our computers, our cars, our bank accounts and our lives—back off—because we have had enough— We will not sit here quietly while you destroy the American farm and the American family— we will not be intimidated by your thug tactics or your bogus slogans—or your big lies— We demand voter ID—poll watchers—and accountability at every level—we will fight back against your insanity—and we will have election integrity— And we will defend The United States of America—at every turn—no matter what it takes—we will defend the right to free speech—the right to bear arms—the right to be free of government intervention in our lives—and we will treat the Constitution of this nation as it should be treated —as the greatest document for human freedom and liberty in the history of the world—because it is—and we all know that! We will not stand here and let you divide us anymore—and we will reject those that try— We are many things—we are black and we are white—we are men and women—short and tall—some are thin and some are not—we come from backroads and back alleys—and we are in this together— Because my friends—we are Americans—and that means something to me—in fact beyond God and my amazing family—it means everything— So, I say to you again—are you with me? Do not allow yourself to get down—I need you now more than ever—I need you to save this nation with me—together we can do this—we can rise above and we can reject the socialists in favor of that shining city on a hill—because that is today—more than ever what America still is—and always will be—BUT we must defend her from those that would tear her down— Are you with me? Ask yourself— are you with me?
In the first puzzle of the week, we read about chaos & murder in a political(?) convention - and how we need to solve it all, among the chaos. The second story has to do with dead uncles, open windows, and escape ladders, and it's up to us to find the hole in the setup. The last puzzle is the most American thing I've ever read - Fordney attends a baseball game (with Babe Ruth, no less), and while he's there, the Umpire gets sniped in the head by a wicked fastball pop bottle. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: A new briefing note from a panel of science experts advising the Ontario government on COVID-19 shows the province is at a tipping point. Variants that are more deadly are circulating widely, new daily infections have reached the same number at the height of the second wave, and the number of people hospitalized is now more than 20 per cent higher than at the start of the last provincewide lockdown, states an analysis from Ontario's COVID-19 science advisory table. ALSO: Canada getting 5M Pfizer doses ahead of schedule in June & Johnson & Johnson vaccine to begin arriving in Canada by end of April GUEST: Dr. Prabhat Jha, Epidemiologist and Professor of Global Health with the University of Toronto, Founding Director of the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael’s Hospital - Canada has the worst record for COVID-19 deaths in long-term care homes compared with other wealthy countries, according to a new report released on Tuesday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). The study found that the proportion of deaths in nursing homes represented 69 per cent of Canada's overall COVID-19 deaths, which is significantly higher than the international average of 41 per cent. In Canada, between March 2020 and February 2021, more than 80,000 residents and staff members of long-term care homes were infected with the coronavirus. Outbreaks occurred in 2,500 care homes, resulting in the deaths of 14,000 residents, according to the report. GUEST: Dr. James Tiessen, Director, Master of Health Administration & Community Care and Associate Professor with Ryerson University - A global shortage of chips that has rattled production lines at car companies and squeezed stockpiles at gadget makers is now leaving home appliance makers unable to meet demand. The chip shortage, which began in earnest in late December, was caused in part as automakers miscalculated demand and pandemic-fuelled sales of smartphones and laptops surged. It forced carmakers including General Motors to cut production, and increased costs for smartphone makers such as Xiaomi Corp. And with every company that uses chips in its products panic buying to shore up its stockpile, the shortage has blindsided not just Whirlpool but other appliance makers too. GUEST: Marvin Ryder. The 2020 season is about to begin, and things look a bit different from what we anticipated when we had our season preview episodes back in March. Pesach will help you understand what you need to know about the sixty game season and the unusual schedule that's coming up. Stat Guru Moshe Schorr joins us in order to discuss whether catching foul tips actually is a skill (you will recall that Jason Kendall said definitively that it is not). And for those who were wondering, Jim Thome isn't as bad a home run hitter as Jimmie Foxx. Glad we cleared that up. For more details, you gotta listen.

This episode of the Perspective Podcast is about figuring out the secret to hitting home runs. This is an analogy for creating your best work and it’s done by putting out lots of work and swinging for the fences. Scotty discusses: The performance of your work doesn’t define you. It takes a lot of bad and mediocre work to stumble across your best. Swinging for the fences and pouring everything you have into your work. Not focusing on perfection—higher volume and practice leads to quality. Find ways to progress each time and experiment in the process. Staying in the game when you face adversity. “Art & Fear” - A book on figuring out what your art is really about. Music by: Blookah
Thanks to a popular Hollywood movie, chat room member Devin was drawn into the stock market. His first pit stop in the markets was the wonderful world of penny stocks where he wandered around surrounded by sharks and wolves. Devin was given some money by his Dad to assist in his trading, so did having more money at his disposal make trading any easier? The crazy thing is, Devin hit some good solid home runs, yet, despite this, his account kept bleeding in the southern direction. There is lots to learn in this trader’s journey. Notes: Devin’s introduction was actually through his father. A good thing about this experience was his dad was never obviously upset or overjoyed by the positions he took. He remained even keeled from what Devin could observe. After watching the Wolf of Wall Street, Devin started to research penny stocks and ended up in a penny stock chat room. Using a tax return from the previous year amounting to $500, he began to aimlessly gamble as many do when first starting to trade. Devin’s father gave him and his twin brother some money to help aid them in taking their financial future in their own hands. This is a double edged sword because even with the best intentions, Devin could now trade the same way he was in the past but with larger size. As time progressed, Devin transitioned to trading a small basket of stock utilizing their options which is very friendly to a smaller size account. He has found more consistent success swing trading advanced options since it requires much less management. This works well for him as his day job responsibilities have increased greatly in the recent months. Quotes: “I wanted a place where I could find stocks. I would just sit in there and wait for someone to say something.” tweet this quote “I convinced myself that I was learning with each loss and I was going to get better from it.” tweet this quote “I was always hoping for that home run. I started to realize for every home run there is 3 strike outs. Slowly my account dwindled down.” tweet this quote “I was being much more careful but something still wasn’t clicking but I was disciplined enough to cut my losses quick.” tweet this quote “One issue I had with penny stocks was buy and hope for the best. I didn’t even think about what would happen if it went against me.” tweet this quote Links: Video: Trade Penny Stocks On Steroids Video: Getting Romantic With Options Trading Video: The Most Effective Order Entry
Sarah Ferguson is a journalist and author. Last year, ABC television screened her three-part documentary series The Killing Season, which examined the forces that shaped the Australian Labor Party during the recent years in which Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard led the party, and the nation. Based on Sarah's lengthy and insightful interviews with key political players, and filmed with the drama and style of the Netflix series House Of Cards, it was pitch-perfect television that resonated strongly across the country, attracting around a million viewers each episode. The series further established Sarah's reputation as one of Australia's finest television interviewers and presenters. Since 2008, she has worked as an award-winning investigative journalist on current affairs program Four Corners – which she currently hosts – as well as filling in for Leigh Sales as the host of 7.30 in 2014, and conducting several hard-hitting political interviews during that time. In 2016, Sarah became an author with The Killing Season Uncut. Co-written with series researcher Patricia Drum and published in April by Melbourne University Publishing, Sarah's book goes behind the scenes to candidly reveal the stories behind the interviews with Rudd, Gillard and a host of other key players. I found that her asides into the craft of journalism were a highlight of the book, such as this quote: "The business of persuasion is a fraught one for journalists. Persuasiveness is one thing, bullshit is another. You have to understand your subject intimately and what their purpose is in speaking on camera. I prefer candour but it's not enough by itself. And you are not friends, although it can appear that way. The line you shouldn't cross is usually only visible when it's behind you." When Sarah was on a day trip to Brisbane in early May, we met at her inner-city hotel room so that I could ask her a few questions before she had to dash off to a radio interview across town. It was a thrill to be sitting across from one of the country's most formidable journalistic brains; within a few minutes, she had called me out for incorrectly attributing a quote from the book to her, rather than Julia Gillard. Our conversation touches on how her writing style has developed across her career; her early writing influences, including her love of poetry; how she comes up with ideas for her Four Corners stories; why she posted a Julia Gillard quote above her desk; who she turns to when she's having trouble with a story; and how she decided to open a live budget night interview on 7.30 with a particularly devastating question for then treasurer Joe Hockey. Sarah Ferguson is an author and ABC journalist. In the same year that she worked on The Killing Season, she also wrote and presented Hitting Home, the landmark series on domestic violence. She has presented the ABC's 7.30 and worked as a journalist on Four Corners, where she won four Walkleys – including the Gold Walkley in 2011 for 'A Bloody Business' – the Melbourne Press Club Gold Quill Award, four Logies for most outstanding public affairs report, as well as the George Munster Award for Independent Journalism and the Queensland Premier's Literary Award. Interview with Melbourne based Comedian Doug Chappel who has been on the comedy scene for nearly 19 years and, among other gigs, MCs at the Comic’s Lounge every Monday. Doug is also passionate about studying Psychology. He has several degrees, including Youth Work, Psychology and Psychology Honours, and a Masters of Counselling. He’s also looking at further post-grad studies (maybe another Masters or a PhD). We discuss: Doug not planning to be in comedy but finding himself to be a natural one random day at the Espy, making mistakes and learning as he went, the psychology in comedy and reading the dynamics of a crowd, stage therapy, dealing with depression, the issues he faced growing up in Footscray, calling for more education and awareness about mental health issues, supporting a friend with anxiety, the violence of growing up in Footscray, the cycle of bullying, generational violence, how comedy and his partner changed him, Doug’s thesis on family violence, Sarah Ferguson’s Hitting Home documentary (on ABC), effects of violence on children, adults, families and the greater community, Doug’s second thesis on the role of gender in regard to violence, frustration with people who say “Why doesn’t the woman just leave?”, the impacts of gender inequality, the notions that perpetrators can be good people and that men can be victims of family violence – but the odds of the victim being female are so much higher, women being more likely to be attacked by someone they know and love (and yes men can be victims too), how victims can feel to blame, control/anger issues, the cycle of violence and how it escalates, attitudes and behaviours, benevolent sexism and the notion that gender inequality is reinforced by it, controlling behaviours leading to imbalance of power in relationships, sense of ownership and behaving in “unacceptable ways”, the Ramage case and provocation laws, Shae’s question about how best to advise/support women in counselling, assisting women to be aware of how certain controlling behaviours can escalate into violence, awareness of the warning signs, providing women with support networks, the call for society to provide more options and better fund services and laws to be changed, the call to do more to protect women, anger management for men, humans having executive function (and therefore the choice) to change attitudes, awareness of the bigger picture/other people’s perspectives, frustration re victim blaming, and providing support so people can help themselves.
This week on Fourth Estate, the panel discuss how Melbourne man 'Phuc Dat Bich' trolled the world's media with his unfortunate (fake) name, Sarah Ferguson's 'Hitting Home' series on domestic violence and Facebook's new tool that's exclusively for journalists.
