In this episode I am joined by Professor Mara Einstein, digital marketing critic; author and public speaker on cult brands and influencer scams; and tenured professor of media studies at Queens College (CUNY). Mara discusses her latest book “Hoodwinked: How Marketers Use the Same Tactics as Cults”, warns about manipulative marketing techniques used in media and religions, details the 9 steps of cult recruitment, and shares case studies of religious marketing models. Mara recalls her own life journey from an early interest in religions and cults, her path through academia studying religion and marketing, and her own discipleship under and subsequent disillusionment with spiritual teacher and political activist Marianne Williamson. Mara also considers religion as a product, analyses stealth Buddhism and prosperity gospel preachers, and offers her own thoughts on how religious groups can market themselves more ethically. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep306-marketing-tactics-of-religions-cults-prof-mara-einstein Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:08 - Hoodwinked, 01:21 - Religion as a product 02:17 - Early interest in religion and cults 03:36 - PhD about religion and policy 05:35 - Televangelists and the Passion of the Christ 06:52 - The Purpose Driven Church marketing 07:34 - The secularisation theory and why the US bucks the trend 08:13 - Joel Osteen vs Oprah Winfrey 09:34 - Why do secular organisations use religious themes? 11:41 - Cults and Multi-level marketing 13:14 - Brand cults such as Apple 14:46 - Marketing Hoodwinked 1536 - Social media vs television advertising 16:37 - Rage farming, increased anxiety, and becoming susceptible to messaging 20:20 - Brand purchases as expressions of individual identity 21:42 - Selling the sacred, how religion and marketing intersects 25:03 - Mara's own religious journey through Judaism and the New Age 26:31 - Becoming a follower of Marianne Williamson 27:01 - Disillusioned by religion 27:13 - Studying evangelicals 27:58 - Interviewing Ralph White 28:29 - Mara analyses her own journey to becoming a follower of Marianne Williamson 32:00 - World Nutella Day 34:18 - Going deeper with Marianne Williamson 36:10 - 9 steps of cult recruitment 36:47 - Targeting the vulnerable 40:26 - Upselling and the Kabbalah Centre 42:02 - Love-bombing 43:14 - Tough love 44:34 - Creation of in and out groups 46:30 - Severe repercussions for leaving 47:22 - American Evangelism 49:33 - How should religions market themselves with integrity? 49:52 - “He Gets Us” and the Alpha Course 52:07 -2 year mission trips don't work 52:41 - The best marketing is to live the message 54:49 - Shady marketing tactics to avoid 56:22 - Beware of panacea answers 57:02 - Beware the charismatic leader 57:56 - How would Mara advice a religious group to use marketing ethically? 59:33 - Know your target audience 01:01:13 - The brilliance of Rick Warren's consumer research driven marketing 01:02:47 - Is stealth Buddhism shady marketing? 01:04:44 - Bait and switch of secular mindfulness 01:06:34 - Capitalist meditation 01:07:42 - Is MBSR a bait and switch? 01:09:09 - Mara's advice for those selling corporate mindfulness 01:10:15 - Transparency vs deception 01:12:23 - Make it ok to question and ok to leave 01:13:31 - Hoodwinked 01:14:15 - Pervasiveness of cults 01:15:13 - Influencers and a spectrum of cults 01:16:29 - Teal Swan and lifestyle marketing 01:17:21 - Anyone can be pulled into a cult … To find our more about Professor Mara Einstein, visit: - https://www.drmaraeinstein.com/ For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - https://www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Transforming Coffee Grounds into a Biodegradable Plastic Alternative, with Dr. Srinivas Janaswamy

Brewing a Greener FutureEver wonder where your used coffee grounds go after they've been completed? Probably not. But at South Dakota State University, researchers are turning them into something entirely unexpected: plastic. Not just any plastic, but a biodegradable alternative to oil and gas-based plastics that dominate the industry today. This innovative approach not only tackles the issueof food and other biomass waste but also addresses the plastic industry's reliance on fossil fuels and the rampant plastic pollution that harms both planetary and human health. The Pervasiveness of PlasticThe vast majority of plastics are currently made from natural gas and crude oil, types of fossil fuel. As of 2019, this production process was responsible for 3.4 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, humanity produces over 300 million tons of plastic each year, resulting in widespread plastic pollution with adverse effects on both the environment and human health. Despite masquerading as a solution to excessive plastic waste, traditional plastic recycling is often ineffective due to contamination and industry deception. Thus, most plastic waste is diverted to landfills. Fossil fuel-based plastics take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose, and when they finally do, they release microplastics into the environment, which can infiltrate human bodies. Recognizing the need for a solution to this plastic crisis, Dr. Srinivas Janaswamy, the lead researcher, initially experimented with making biodegradable packaging using various agricultural byproducts, such as avocado peels, corn, oats, and wheat stalks. His focus has since shifted to spent coffee grounds, which contain lignocellulosic fibers — natural plant polymers essential for creating biodegradable plastics. The process of transforming coffee grounds into biodegradable films is quite intensive and involves drying, bleaching, and extracting the plant fibers from the coffee grounds. The resulting clear solution is then dried to form a strong, plastic-like film that can be used as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging.A Second Life for Coffee GroundsOne of the significant advantages of this solution is its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fuel-based plastic production and minimize plastic pollution. But on top of that, it provides a sustainable method of reusing otherwise wasted coffee grounds. Every morning, millions of people worldwide begin their day with a cup of coffee, a ritual shared by over 60% of Americans. Widespread enthusiasm for this caffeinated beverage has propelled it to become the second most traded commodity globally by volume, just behind oil. As a result, coffee shops are ubiquitous, generating an enormous amount of spent coffee grounds — approximately 8 million tons annually, much of which ends up in landfills. When left to waste away in landfills, coffee grounds can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas that exacerbates climate change. Meanwhile, biodegradable films derived from coffee grounds can decompose in soil within just 45 days, a stark contrast to traditional plastics. Because of their rapid biodegradation and abundance, spent coffee grounds provide an attractive resource for bioplastic packaging innovation.Market Barriers in a Plastic-Dependent WorldDespite its promising potential, the coffee ground-based film still faces challenges. The film has immense tensile strength — meaning it can withstand a great deal of stress before fracturing — but is less flexible than traditional plastic, which may ultimately limit its applications. Additionally, the production costs currently exceed those of fossil fuel alternatives. Nonetheless, Janaswamy is optimistic about its market potential, remaining confident that costs will decrease as technology evolves. As consumers become increasingly aware of the detrimental environmental and human health impacts of traditional plastics, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives. Even if these biodegradable plastics do come at a higher price, consumers may be willing to pay extra for the sustainability benefits they offer. Therefore, coffee ground-based packaging film presents an environmentally conscious solution without compromising the desired convenience of plastic packaging.About Our GuestDr. Srinivas Janaswamy, an associate professor at South Dakota State University's Department of Dairy and Food Science, continues to lead research on developing sustainable, biodegradable packaging materials as alternatives to traditional plastics. His work embodies the shift towards a more sustainable future, one in which waste is transformed into valuable resources and where our daily habits — like brewing a cup of coffee — can contribute to a cleaner planet.ResourcesEnvironment Energy Leader: Brewing Sustainability: Turning Spent Coffee Grounds into Biodegradable PackagingAirX Carbon: The Perfect Blend: Bio-Based Plastic Made from Coffee GroundsPackaging World: Coffee Grounds Potentially the Next BioplasticWaste Management Review: Study trials coffee grounds as plastic packagingFurther ReadingSouth Dakota State University: Could spent coffee grounds provide an alternative to plastic packaging?PubMed Central: Potential Uses of Spent Coffee Grounds in the Food IndustryWorld Economic Forum: 5 innovative ways your coffee grounds can be recycledUnited Nations Environment Programme: Plastic PollutionCarbon Brief: Why a UN Plastics treaty matters for climate changeResearch Gate: (PDF) Revolutionizing packaging: Bioplastics for superior food and pharmaceutical solutionsFor a transcript, please visit: https://climatebreak.org/transforming-coffee-grounds-into-a-biodegradable-plastic-alternative-with-dr-srinivas-janaswamy/.

Julian Assange has been a free man since June, but the issue of his long confinement in a UK prison is still in the news. Recently he testified before the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and the Council then passed a resolution declaring that Assange could be designated a political prisoner. Independent journalist Kevin Gosztola joins Mickey to examine the implications of the PACE decision. They also discuss other press-freedom issues, notably the unprecedented death toll among journalists in the Gaza Strip, at the hands of Israeli forces. Then Steve Macek looks at foreign campaign spending in U.S. elections, taking note both of its widespread presence as well as the relative lack of interest by corporate media in reporting on the subject. He observes that only occasional stories about individual politicians' potential campaign funding transgressions (such as those of NYC Mayor Eric Adams) make the news, but the system itself is seldom covered. Kevin Gosztola is the editor of the Dissenter newsletter, www.thedissenter.org. His book on the Julian Assange case, Guilty of Journalism, was published in 2023.   The post Assange testifies at PACE / Pervasiveness of foreign money in U.S. political campaigns appeared first on KPFA.

Send us a textThe month of October 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of F. A. Hayek winning the Nobel Prize. Winning such a prize is obviously a big deal, but someone wins one every year, so what's the big deal about this guy? Well. Hayek's contributions to the field of economics are significant because they spoke to more than simply economics. Spontaneous order, price signals as information, and the pretense of knowledge all might come to mind, but they might not. (Maybe you're new to this! If so, helloooo there!) These concepts branch into philosophy, social structure, and the nature of the human mind. Chapter #7   Suicide The word “”committed” is usually used in the context of crimes.  2016 suicide was ranked the 10thcause of death in the US. Pg 116 men die from suicide 4x more then women.  Pain is a natural reaction to death but suffering is what our mind does to us. 118 Death by suicide is not a selfish act or even a choice. It's a sign of a mind that needs help. 114 The path to freedom from the suffering caused by our minds is through finding meaning. Pg 118 There are many paths to meaning, and if you search for them, you will eventually find them. 119 Give the suicide hotline to call or text: #988 or website 988lifeline.org Chapter #8   Complicated Relationships   Be kind, for everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Anonymous However, hoping they will be different than they are only leads to more turmoil. Pg129 People are who they are, and they don't change just because we need them to. If they are important enough to us, we will overlook their insensitivity. If they are not, we may consider letting the relationship go. Pg 130 This is the difference between expectations on a relationship versus standards for a relationship.   We grieve in character, both good and bad. Pg 131 What does the Enneagram have to contribute to grieving?  My job is how I respond to situations and other people. How people choose to play their characters is not for me to evaluate. My one and only job is my own character. Pg 134 Too often when we deal with people in complicated relationships, we focus on their reactions. If I do this for them, will they appreciate it? Will it be reciprocated? I always encourage people to do kind things with no expectations. Expectations are resentments under construction. Pg 134 In the context of complicated relationships in the time of loss there is a lot of hurt.  Hurting people hurt people. As a result there are things that are done and said during a time of bereavement that can cause pain.  This is why Kessler goes into some depth talking about forgiveness because grieving neccessates forgiveness.Seek to make forgiveness a part of the grieving process.  Four Types of Forgiveness:             1.         Indirect forgiveness: you do it all inside yourself.             2.         Direct forgiveness: you do it openly in a straightforward manner with sincerity             3.         Conditional forgiveness: you forgive based on personal judgments made on the person's character or action.              4.         Unconditional forgiveness: you give the person forgiveness whether they ask for it or not with  disregard to their motives and having the personal motive of being free from resentment. This type of forgiveness is contingent on #1. Forgiveness opens our hearts when we are stuck in the prison of resentment. We get to be right, but we never get to be happy. The basic question of meaningful relationships is “Do I want to be right or do I want to have relationship?”  Pg 137  Four Processes to Consider When Forgiving             1.         Picture the person as an infant.             2.         Think of them growing up and someone hurting them.             3.         Acknowledge the relationship with that person for the duration of it and what it has contributed to life.             4.         Remember the process of my own life, where I am and how I got here.  When I recognize I'm human and I make mistakes, I can forgive others for their mistakes. Pg 138 This is a strategy for helping the person that has been hurt to work through the process of forgiveness.  This does not justify the hurt that was caused or mean that the consequences of their action.   One of the biggest spiritual lessons we can learn is to understand that everyone is doing the best they can at any given moment. No one looks in the mirror in the morning and says; “I think I'll be a real jerk today.”  Pg. 139 It will help to remember that forgiveness is seldom for “them”. It is for you. Pg. 139 In  chapter #9 There are five specific ways that people can grow after tragedy:  pg. 158             1.         Their relationships grow stronger.             2.         They discover new purposes in life.             3.         They find inner strength.             4.         Spirituality is deepened.             5.         They renew their appreciation for life.  Chapter #10 Miscarriage and Infant Lose Even our dictionaries often include the word “failure” in the definition of miscarriage. Try to understand that while your partner may grieve differently from you, they still deserve a grief process that is treated with sensitivity and respect. Lean on each other during this difficult time, and give each other grace. How can they say goodbye when they've never had a chance to say hello? They are grieving for what could have been Chapter #11 Illnesses of Our Mind: Mental Illness and Addiction My mind is a bad neighborhood. I try not to go into it alone.  Anne Lamott  171 Addiction should no longer be seen as a moral failing or a lack of willpower. It is a medical problem, an illness that leads to a progressively worsening chronic condition, and one that is particularly hard to fight, because the drugs involved attack the brain of users, the very organ that helps us fight other dangers to our survival. The same can be said for mental illness. We can't tell a person who is mentally ill or addicted to use his/her brain to help himself recover, because the brain is a diseased organ.  Pg 175 The Three C's of Al-Anon pg. 177             1.         We didn't cause it             2.         We cannot control it             3.         We cannot cure it Sometimes the most meaningful realization in the loss of grief is our loss of control. Meaning is everywhere if you look for it. Pg 178 Addiction is about numbness. When you're addicted, that numbness allows you to ignore the danger, to think that you're in control when you're using. And even when you are sober, you may still be numb to the danger and relapse. We understand the relapse is part of recovery. Pg 185  Chapter #12 More Love Than Pain I don't think of all the misery, but of all the beauty that remains. Anne Frank The common belief is that grief is all about pain. Anyone who has been in grief would certainly agree with that. But I believe there is more. There is love. Why do we believe that the pain we feel is about the absence of love? The love didn't die when the person we love died. It didn't disappear. It remains.  The question is: How do we learn to remember that person with more love than pain… There is not getting around the pain. We have to go through it because it is an inevitable result of the separation we are experiencing. It's a brutal, forced separation. Pg 191 The pain you feel is proportionate to the love you had. The deeper you loved the deeper the pain. But you will find that love exists on the other side of the pain. It's actually the face of pain.  My thought - Love doesn't exit because of the pain; no, love exists in, through and beyond the pain. You can't heal what you can't feel. P 192 Get in touch with the feeling, let it speak to you, let it go through you and then be done with it. If you're sad, you need to stay with the sadness and feel it full. If you have a hundred tears to cry don't stop at fifty. The secret to remembering with love begins with accepting the pain, not trying to deny it or ignore it. Pg 192 No matter how deeply spiritual or religious we are, sometimes we want to be left in the humanness of our pain. 193 Whenever you are talking about your loss, do you want the spiritual response, the human response or both?  Pg 193 Those of us who have lost someone dear do need to be in pain. Pg 193 Feeling the pain is a necessary part of remembering the love. The pain is part of the love. We can't love someone and lose them without feeling pain. Not only do we have a need to feel the pain, we also need to have it witnessed by others, not pushed away. Pa 195 Grief may be postponed but it cannot be eradicated. Pg 195 Buffalo run into a storm, thus minimizing how long it will last Pg 196 The avoidance of grief will only prolong the pain of the grief. Better to turn toward it and allow it to run its natural course, knowing that the pain will eventually pass, that one of these days we will find the love on the other side of the pain. Pg. 196  We are made up of love. We are the sum total of love. If I've ever felt one moment of real love in my life, that can be with me in my most terrifying moments. Love never dies. In our darkest moments love remains. When everything else is gone, love continues. Pg 197 What we appreciate, appreciates.  198 The Three Steps To Taking In The Good  (Rick Hanson) 199               1.         Identify a positive experience or memory             2.         Enrich it. Savor it. Intensify it.             3.         Absorb the experience. Sink into it and let it sink into you.  Pain is never the whole story. We may get lost in it for a while, but there's always something more. Pg 200 Love Bursts – a surge of love that comes from a memory of a person.  When we move through pain and we release it, we fear there will be nothing, but the truth is, when the pain is gone we are connected only in love. Kessler says, “Though much of my work is about giving people permission to grieve fully after a loss, I also want to give them permission to keep loving. 202 Love doesn't stop with death. A body dies but love doesn't.  page 202  Love doesn't exit because of the pain; no, love exists in, through and beyond the pain. You can't heal what you can't feel. P 192 Feel the pain, experience the love. I find that when I reflect on the people I have lost that if I concentrate for just a bit I can still feel their love Look for small seeds of love in pain. Just like a delicate plant, we have to pay attention to it and nourish it. If we do, the love will flower once again in our hearts. Pg 202 Chapter #13 Legacy In 2010 Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet created a Giving Pledge, a campaign to encourage billionaires to commit to donating half or more of their wealth to philanthropic causes during their lifetime. Pg 205  Each of us affects many people throughout our lives. The movie It's a Wonderful Life does a brilliant job of helping us realize how many people we affect in our lives without realizing it. Pg 206 Write down their memories in a memory book to share with friends and family. They can continue to observe traditions and visit places that were meaningful to that person. Pg 209 Missing them is part of the remembering them, and how you remember your loved one is part of their legacy.  Pg209 Visiting a place that was special to our loved ones helps us remember and connects us to their legacies.  Pg 210 Ensuring that the good qualities of your loved one will live on in your own life is perhaps the most meaningful of all legacies. Pg 211 We grieve as a tribe and we're always modeling for that tribe. Pg 212 Ultimately our loved ones belongings can become a trap when se find ourselves unable to part with them… What I have learned from my work is that as we decrease the outer evidence that our loved ones lived, we must increase the evidence inside of us.  Pg215 I help people understand that they themselves are the biggest piece of evidence of their loved one's lives.  As you think about how to do something meaningful with the things that are in your possession, I encourage you to photograph those things you care about before letting them go. I've found that you can get the same emotional reaction from a photo as you do from the item itself.   Pg217 You are also beginning to process the reconstruction of your own life. Nothing will return you to the way you were before you lost your loved one. But everything you do to help his legacy flourish and grow will help you grow, too.  Chapter #14 Grieving to Believing: The Afterlife Just as birth is about a change in the mother's connection to the infant who was once inside of her, so is death a change in our relationship to the person who is no longer here but still lives within us. Death does not end a relationship, it changes it.  Pg220  Expand on this below. In a mother's womb were two babies. The first baby asked the other: “Do you believe in the life after this world?” The second baby replied, “Why of course. There has to be something after this world.” “Nonsense,” said the first. “There is no life after this world. What would that life be? The umbilical cord supplies nutrition. Life after this would be impossible. The umbilical cord is too short. There can't be a world after this one.” The second baby held his ground. “I think there is something, and maybe it's different than it is here. Maybe we'll see each other there.” The first baby replied, “If there is another world, no one has ever come back from there. Leaving here is the end of life and after delivery, there will be nowhere to go and nothing but darkness.” Well, I don't know,” said the twin. “But certainly we'll see Mother and she will take care of us.” “Mother?”  The first baby guffawed. “You believe in a mother? An all-powerful, intelligent being that makes all this happen? Where is she now?” The second baby calmly and patiently tried to explain. “She is all around us. It is in her that we live. Without her, there would not be a world.” “Ha. I don't see her, so it's only logical that she doesn't exist.”  To which the other replied, “Sometimes when you're in silence you can hear her, you can perceive her. I believe there is a reality after this world.” Writing a good-bye letter may be a terrible idea because the relationship has not ended. Writing a transformation letter may be effective Pg 220 The Five Stages of Grief were never meant to be an end unto themselves, and completion of them wasn't supposed to signify the ending of the relationship or grief. There is a continuing evolution in the relationship pg. 221 When someone dies the relationship doesn't die with them. You have to learn how to have new relationships with them. You can still keep learning from them in your everyday life. Pg 221 I have seen my wife do this with her grandmother in asking how she would approach a certain situation with the wisdom and candor that her grandmother still provides.  You're not closing the door on a relationship with the person who died. You don't ever bring the grief over a loved one to a close. You're opening the door to a different relationship. Remaining connected to your loved one in grief is not “unhealthy grieving.” It's normal. In death, our attachments continue, as does the love. The connections continue to evolve. Pg222 “My mother's and my relationship has improved a great deal in the twenty years since she passed away. I think I've learned to understand her and look at her with more compassion.”  Pg223 There are three phenomena encountered by those dying:  pg. 226             1.         Visions – looking into the world to come.             2.         Getting ready to go on ‘a trip'             3.         Crowded rooms. Three possible options for viewing the afterlife:  Pg 227             1.         They have an awareness of you. They see you grieving.             2.         They are no longer in touch with this world.              3.         They died, and their consciousness became nothing.             One focus – We should grieve fully and then live fully. We were put on this earth for such a short time and we will never get to experience this life again. So why don't we think about how much one more day would mean in our own lives?  Pg 228 In the face of great losses life goes on. The world keeps spinning. The seasons change. Every storm gives way to a clear new day. Despite our losses we continue… Love and life remain within us and the potential for meaning is always there. 228 Either all deaths matter or none of them do. Pg238 The worst kind of loss is your loss Pg 238 Acknowledge the power of grief Pg 239 Broken heart syndrome is a temporary disruption of your heart's normal pumping function, often brought on by a surge of stress hormones triggered by a serious event, such as the death of a loved one… Women are more likely to have broken heart syndrome, but anyone over fifty-five is at a higher risk.  Pg 240 If we shut our ears out of hurt and anger, we will miss it. Pg 244 Martin Seligman 3 P's that can shape our world after loss             1.         Personalization – you blame yourself for it, or feel like the only one who has ever suffered such a tragic loss             2          Pervasiveness – you believe that a negative event will destroy everything in your life             3.         Permanence – you believe that the effects of a loss or a disaster will last forever.  No one likes or wants this new normal  Pg.  245 The phrase “I don't know how you are doing it”. I tell them I am not. I have just decided to be a part of ongoing life. What would best honor the years they didn't get? That could be one way of bringing meaning to our lives without them.  Pg248 People often think there is no way to heal from severe loss. I believe that is not true. You heal when you can remember those who have died with more love than pain, when you find a way to create meaning in your life in a way that will honor theirs. It requires a decision and a desire to do this, but finding meaning is not extraordinary, it is ordinary. It happens all the time all over the world.  Pg 248 There are people who walk this earth in awe of the life around them. They are not people who have had a perfect life. The truth is they are often the ones who have had a lot of tragedy. Pg 248 There are magical moments to be had with our living loved ones now. Our job is to find them and cherish them. Through them, we can still find sweetness in the world. Pg 249 There are challenges to finding meaning. Every moment we are making choices-whether to move toward healing or to stay stuck in pain. Like all the other stages, the sixth stage of grief requires movement. We can't move into the future without leaving the past. We have to say goodbye to the life we had and say yes to the future. Pg 249 Ask yourself, “Who would I be if I changed and grew with this loss? More important, who will you be if you don't? 249 Now that your loved one has died, who are you? Pg 249

An impact-focused strategist and communications specialist, Anjana works with mission-driven organizations to leverage communication platforms to increase visibility and achieve sustainability and impact goals. “No matter how much we try to control — if we keep overconsuming, we're not getting anywhere with anything that we're doing for sustainability. So, that is one of the reasons I wanted to know — why is this happening? And that's how I got into my research.” -Anjana If you've been following along over the last couple of years, I have often brought up the links between fast fashion and fast media. In today's world, I believe the only way to slow down fashion is to also slow down media – since fashion and media are intrinsically linked predominantly around driving consumption. This leads me to this week's guest, who recently conducted some powerful research focused on fashion, social media, and consumption. Have you heard of the TikTok Shein haul trend? You may have seen it – basically, it involves individuals sharing all the items that they purchased from ultra fast fashion brand Shein in a video (or haul). Sometimes they disclose how much money they spent on the clothing, and as this week's guest concludes, it's largely interconnected to showcasing social status. The United States is Shein's largest market – I have personally experienced their aggressive social media tactics – I get these messages that are tagging me in a visual telling me how to become a Shein ambassador. I feel like I am constantly flagging them as spam and blocking the accounts, but they never stop rolling in. The surprising thing is that it's not Shein's actual *influencers* or *paid partners* that drive the company's sales – instead, it's User Generated Content, which is basically content individuals post on social media without receiving any payment. They do it at their own will, and it's fueling the continual growth of this ultra fast fashion brand. There is so much to break down when it comes to these layers — tune in to hear more directly from Anjana. Quotes & links from the conversation: “The reality is that we will always be pressured to consume more — that is how business works. Because the idea of growth is tightly linked to economics of sale, and that is how even the fundamentals of GDP work. And we can see that the developing countries will soon catch up with the developed nations in terms of the amount of consumption, which is bad. But to change that, the definition of growth should change — GDP should probably not be the sole indicator of how a nation is classified as developed. And systems should change. This will take more time and effort, but reducing consumption and choosing wisely, even it is from a mass-market brand, can be done faster if individuals and communities engage in conscious consumption.”-Anjana (35:53) Connect with Anjana on LinkedIn Anjana's Website  Follow Anjana on Instagram >

World poverty and extreme poverty worldwide are a present and dire reality and danger. According to the World Bank, about 650 million people in the world live below the extreme poverty line, defined as earning less than $2.15 per day. In the United States and other industrialized countries, living on less than $2.15 a day (absolutely, and without additional social assistance) would surely make a person homeless and starving. However, is that also the situation for those poorest 650 million in developing countries who are said to be living below this poverty line? In this Exclusive expose, DR STEVEN PAYSON, an economist at the US Department of Labor, and professor at the University of Maryland, presents an alternative economic reality. Global poverty is undoubtedly dire, distressing and calls for appropriate policy responses and generous humanitarian aid. However, as DR PAYSON, argues in his latest volume of work, Extreme Poverty in the World: How the World Bank and United Nations Measure It (Fake Economics, Exposed: Its Pervasiveness, Harmfulness, and Prevention), a new presentation of the statistic facts are required, statistics based on purchasing power parity and not on "statistic poverty porn." DR PAYSON argues that the prices actually paid by the poorest people on the planet can, in fact, be acquired and used by economists to derive more accurate measures of their actual level of well-being. "In this way," DR PAYSON maintains, "the world can have a better understanding of extreme poverty in its truest sense, and can direct assistance to where it is genuinely needed the most." The third principle of sexual health, according to Doug Braun-Harvey and Michael Vigorito, and part of the sex education we wish we had is effective, non fear mongering conversations around sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and pregnancy. Jenelle Pierce, the Executive Director of the STI Project, joins us for the next two episodes to share how we can have greater education, awareness, and dialogue around sexually transmitted infections. In this episode, Jenelle shares her personal story with us. Not surprisingly, purity culture is at the room of this." The Pervasiveness of Purity Culture (6:00): Jenelle speaks to us about how even though her parents were not the hyper-religious type, the conservative area she grew up in Michigan influenced her ideas around and about sex. “I was really involved in a youth group at the time and I loved going to youth group and I actually was on board with the idea that I think I might try and save myself, quote unquote till marriage. That of course didn't end up happening and was a lot of the source of shame. I felt very much like, this is a result of my bad behavior and I'm deserving of this. And this is how I'm being punished by God and I will never be worthy and I'm less than.” When proper sex education is absent, it makes sense that someone would think an STI is a divine punishment. Medical Misinformation or Lack of Information (20:00): Janelle talks about the lack of information she got after her diagnosis. “The severity, duration, all of those things did dissipate over time, but mine was a very kind of traditional outbreak and experience. My doctor told me that it was the “worst case that I've ever seen”. There was no, this is super common. The first outbreak, is oftentimes really severe, but after your body builds up antibodies, it will start to suppress, you know, no education, no literature. So then I'm thinking, well, if someone who's a medical practitioner who in theory sees this somewhat frequently, I didn't even understand how common it was at the time, and of course, he was certainly not going to substantiate that for me.” Shaming and Sharing (37:00): Jenelle and Jeremiah reflect on the implications of the phrase “Thank you for sharing your story,” and the fine line between acknowledging vulnerability and assuming culpability and shame. Dialogue (45:00): “It's not just like I have this STI I status I need to disclose. It's that I wanna talk about these things around sexual health and safer sex because I had an experience that opened my mind. That looks like, “I'm curious about what you need. I'm curious about what you'd like to do around safer sex or sexual health. I'm curious when you were last tested, cause here's when I was tested here was, here were the results of my tests.” And all of those things are important because the person who is initiating the conversation their safety, comfort, and body is just as important as the person who is receiving that information and then reciprocating the dialogue in return. So that's, the onus gets put on the person who has the thing, you know, like the thing that they need to share. It's all parties that are responsible for this.” To finish off this episode, Jenelle talks about what a conversation about sexual health and safety should look like. The dialogue is a two-way stream, and not just on the person initiating it. Check out next week's episode to learn more about specific ways that this dialogue can look.

Everyday Happiness - Finding Harmony and Bliss

Would you say you are an optimist or a pessimist? If you are a pessimist or are feeling pessimistic lately, there are actions you can take to improve your optimism.    Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day,  through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.    I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and if I were to ask you which side you tend to fall on, would you say you were an optimist or a pessimist?    Studies have shown that optimist character traits lead to better physical and mental health, higher motivation, a longer lifespan, and lower stress levels. So, why wouldn't everyone want to be an optimist? Well, optimism and pessimism, while partially hereditary, tend to stem from childhood experiences. It's a classic nature vs. nurture debate.    Martin Seligman, a clinical psychologist, author, former president of the American Psychological Association, and father of modern positive psychology, found that optimism can be increased through practiced optimism training. This training tends to focus on the 3 Ps of Cognitive Distortions - personalization, pervasiveness, and permanence.    First, personalization. This is how we diagnose when bad things happen. Pessimists tend to blame themselves, whereas optimists recognize the reality of the situation and focus on doing better next time.    Second, pervasiveness. Pervasiveness is when you take the results of an event and contribute them to the rest of your life. Pessimists take negative results, and optimists take positive results. For example, a pessimist might say a failed job interview means they will never get a job.    Third, permanence. This is whether one views a negative situation as temporary or permanent. For example, a musician who performed poorly would either think, "I've always been a terrible musician," or "I played poorly today because X, but I'll do better next time”.  By relearning and taking a more positive mindset to these three cognitive distortions, people can improve their optimism and happiness.    I do want to caution that improving optimism doesn't happen overnight. Just like relearning any skill, it takes time and patience. I also want to note that there is such a thing as being too optimistic. This is when people don't accept the realities of life and magically think everything will work out no matter what, life cliff jumping with no experience or instruction. This isn't healthy either, so it is essential to find a balance that leads towards optimism.      Get Everyday Happiness delivered to your inbox by subscribing at: https://www.katiejefcoat.com/happiness   And, let's connect on social at @everydayhappinesswithkatie  and join the community on the hashtags #IntentionalMargins and #everydayhappinesswithkatie on Instagram   Links:  https://onamission.bio/everydayhappiness/   Inspired by these articles: https://www.verywellmind.com/i-can-do-anything-mindset-5220083 https://www.verywellmind.com/learned-optimism-4174101 https://positivepsychology.com/learned-optimism/

In this special episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, produced in partnership with Madison Marcus, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Madison Marcus partner and division leader of sustainability/ESG and banking and finance Eric Boone about the elevation of environmental, social and governance concerns as we move into a post-pandemic market. Mr Boone details his vocational journey and how he became so personally and professionally invested in ESG work, particularly modern slavery, and his motivation for serving clients across the board in the best and most holistic ways possible. He also outlines the intersection between ESG and other legal practice areas, the need to “fully leverage” such considerations across practices, the increased prominence of ESG following the age of coronavirus, how Australia's corporate approaches to ESG compare to global counterparts and whether such organisations are being proactive or reactive about implementing their approaches. Finally, Mr Boone details how organisations can stay ahead of the game with regard to ESG, what constitutes best practice moving forward, and how he sees practice groups such as his evolving in the future. How to Overcome Learned Helplessness - The 3 Fateful P's

What is Learned Helplessness and why does it matter? The term was created by Dr. Martin Seligman to characterize people who feel they have no control over their lives. A person can have acquired helplessness due to one of three types of beliefs:Personalization refers to the tendency to place the blame for mistakes on oneself. After all, you are the common denominator in all the issues you encounter. Additionally, ideas like internal locus of control and accepting responsibility for our own lives have been taught to us. But where there is confusion is in the line between accepting responsibility and blaming or assigning fault to yourself.Pervasiveness refers to when a problem in one aspect of your life spreads to all other areas. Permanence refers to the idea that the issue will always exist and that how awful you are feeling right now will always remain.Overcoming the 3 Fateful P's comes down to an awareness that these P's exist and reframing how the experience could be Impersonal, Impermanent, and Specific. For more content and all things Zeus With Bruce, go to https://www.zeuswithbruce.com/ and follow on Instagram @zeuswithbruce

In the last year, play-to-earn (P2E) games have become a promising new frontier for both blockchain enthusiasts who are seeking a deeper purpose in what NFTs and digital ownership can enable, and game developers who are intrigued by this new model of publishing games where it can bypass the walled gardens of the mobile app stores. However, given the nascency of this industry, there's still a ton of skepticism. Common criticisms include P2E games being “not fun to play”, not actually helping people earn money, and not necessarily providing additional value to own game NFTs. For Yat Siu who was one of the first investors in Axie Infinity, he believes blockchain gaming is just scratching the surface of what opportunities it can unlock. Beyond immediate value, he is able to see the long term benefits through a philosophical lens.ABOUT THE GUESTYat Siu is the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, a global leader in blockchain and gaming with the mission to deliver digital property rights to the world's gamers and internet users, thereby creating a new asset class, play-to-earn economies, and a more equitable digital framework contributing to building the open metaverse. He is a veteran technology entrepreneur and investor based in Hong Kong. He was previously the Founder and CEO of Outblaze, and began his career in Atari Germany. He has been an early advocate for the use of blockchain and NFTs in the gaming industry, which will allow gamers to enjoy true ownership of their own game assets, data and consequently, equity.  SHOW NOTES[2:20] How Yat became interested in gaming[8:45] Gaining conviction for blockchain gaming[13:40] Permissionless nature of the blockchain[15:10] Extractive nature of mobile gaming[19:40] Principles of Play-and-Earn (GameFi)[25:20] Property rights in the Metaverse[34:40] Pervasiveness of monopolies online[36:40] Decentralized property rights as the foundation for innovation[44:10] Capitalism and inequality[50:40] Civility, governance and politics in the Metaverse[59:00] Education as the best defender of democracy[1:02:45] Future role of government and policies makers in Web 3[1:06:20] Web 3 and GameFi investing landscape[1:16:30] Advice to founder and operators wanting to enter into GameFi
