His guide is world-famous pop-star and filmmaker PureGrand who, fresh off the heels of the release of his hit new single, drops by to spill the proverbial on one of Dublin's hottest hook-up spots. Thanks for tuning into our Dickovery Channel series, and thanks again for not sending these ones to our families. Outro music is, of course, 'Seven Up' by PureGrand, out on YouTube and all problematic streaming platforms now x Support the show

In Episode 20 of Anything But Toto, Bianca and Julian pay tribute to the legendary Brian Wilson, who passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 82. As the creative force behind the Beach Boys, Brian didn't just define a sound - he helped reinvent what pop music could be. In this first instalment of a two-part tribute, the hosts dive into the band's formative and most influential years (1961–1966), tracing Brian's evolution from surf-rock wunderkind to avant-pop architect. They explore how Wilson: Invented the surf vocal genre Shaped the shimmering, sun-soaked “California Myth” Defined the auteur approach to music making Refined the Wall of Sound production style Crafted experimental, emotionally complex music that still topped the charts From early beach anthems to the introspective brilliance of Today!, all the way to the lush masterpiece that is Pet Sounds, this episode examines how Brian's genius was there from the very beginning. Along the way, Bianca and Julian chronicle the personal and cultural forces that shaped Brian's early work, including candid discussions around trauma, mental health, and the darker currents behind the sunny image. Stay tuned for Part 2, where they'll explore late 1966-1977. CW: This episode includes discussion of child abuse, mental illness, suicide, and substance use. Listener discretion is advised. We've got such a fun one for you today—we're chatting with Nora Princiotti about her new book Hit Girls: Britney, Taylor, Beyonce, and the Women Who Built Pop's Shiniest Decade, which comes out on June 17. This book is being billed—rightfully so—as “the ultimate love letter to pop music,” and in this book Nora takes us on a deep dive into how female pop stars broke through the music industry in the 2000s and changed the game forever. Nora covers so many women in this book—Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry—and that's just for starters. She talks about how these women redefined the role of the pop star, not only within the music industry, but within culture, more broadly. Nora writes that “the aughts were a harrowing but magical time in music for women,” and she tells us all about why in today's episode. Nora is a staff writer at The Ringer, where she covers culture—everything from Taylor Swift to the NFL. Speaking of the NFL, Nora was previously a reporter for The Boston Globe, where she covered the New England Patriots dynasty. Nora currently co-hosts the Every Single Album podcast, which just hosted Miley Cyrus—so covering female artists is a specialty of hers. She writes in Hit Girls that, “though the aughts were over, they certainly left a mark.” We're going to dig into what that mark is right now.Hit Girls: Britney, Taylor, Beyonce, and the Women Who Built Pop's Shiniest Decade by Nora Princiotti

Sarah is getting old all of a sudden, and she is not happy about it. She claims she has an old lady body now, and we talk about how humans age in two big bursts at 44 and 60. Sarah saw a man taking pics of young girls at the beach so we debate whether she should've confronted him. Frogs have been croaking (get it?) at alarming numbers due to storm drains, so someone created the cutest solution you ever heard of. We discuss the old classic the tortoise and the hare, and we admit that that story is a buncha b.s. Truth is, that hare is going to win 99% of the time. We talk about karma and the silly way humans think about it that is biased to their own goodness. Sarah explains why female friendships are keeping pop music afloat. We learn why humans heal so much slower than their chimpanzee relatives.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 20% off your order, head to https://www.harvesthosts.com and use code BRAINCANDYVisit https://shopbeam.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDY to get our exclusive discount of up to 35% off.For 50% off your order, head to https://www.dailylook.com and use code BRAINCANDYGet 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life when you go to https://www.hungryroot.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
