Host Nate Wilcox welcomes Bob Stanley to discuss “Let's Do It: The Birth of Pop Music, A History” - the prequel to his own earlier book, “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The Story of Pop Music from Bill Haley to Beyoncé”. That one started in 1955 and ran forward through the rock and roll era. This one goes back and asks what the word “pop” meant before rock and roll took the name away from it. The answer is that it meant almost everything. Vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley, dance bands and crooners, the Broadway song and the novelty side, the whole commercial apparatus of a business that was already enormous before anyone thought to call it a youth market. Stanley argues that this music has been orphaned twice over - too early for the rock histories, too popular for the jazz histories - and that the gap has swallowed some of the best records ever made. While there's no question Dolly Parton was popular, she had no intention of “going pop” throughout her 60-plus-year career. On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are chatting about the relationship Parton — who died on Aug. 25 at age 80 — had with pop music, from her crossover hits to collaborating with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus. In a 1977 interview with Country Music magazine — the same year she released one of her poppiest hits, “Here You Come Again” — Parton addressed the genre question head-on. “I never considered the fact that I was going pop,” she said at the time. “I will go pop, as far as crossing over, sooner or later. But I will go there as me. I will go there with my own music, not by trying to be something different than I am. “If my music has to have a label, I will call it country, mainly because I am country,” she added. “You cannot leave what you are. Ten years later Enrico Caruso sang once into a gramophone and the factory made the copies. Same business, different decades, completely different deals, and that is the story of the evolution of the American music business. Also: radio's sudden arrival in the 1920s and what it did to record sales, Bert Williams, Irving Berlin, and Al Jolson — the biggest entertainer in America in his day, and why almost nobody has heard him since. With music: Caruso's “The Lost Chord,” Bert Williams' “Nobody” and “He's a Cousin of Mine,” George Washington Johnson's “Laughing Song” from the 1890s, and Jolson's “When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along,” cut for Brunswick in 1926. BEST OF: After our “AILIEN The Final Card” show, it became apparent that the push to grant mass “amnesty” to every person and agency involved in black budget programs was a dangerous narrative gaining more traction by the day, and now compounded by an executive order from the White House titled “Launching the Genesis Mission.” This program seeks to support, along with the AI regulation moratorium of the BBB, the narrative that “America is in a race for global technology dominance in the development of artificial intelligence (AI).” The first section states: “the challenges we face require a historic national effort, comparable in urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project that was instrumental to our victory in World War II.” But what suddenly changed? Have other countries cracked the AI egg entirely or has, as the UFO community suggests, they reverse engineered alien tech fully? Even so, a dangerous nationwide Manhattan Project should be a secret, not a public initiative. One part of the EO says the goal is to develop "AI-enabled predictive models, simulation models, and design optimization tools,” things that have been sold to the public over and over again, from climate change to pandemic models, but which have all been wrong. But if AI says something is true based on a model, it must be correct. However, if AI is merely saying what is most likely based on current actions, like a tarot reading, then if all current policies are designed for war then isn't that what we will get? Isn't that what Alex Karp of Palantir said would happen? And isn't “Genesis” also “skynet”?For those left waiting for something “big” to happen it will be disappointing to learn that it already has. Engineered smart/micro-dust is currently turning the world into a giant sensor, while Sam Altman of the Stargate Project, OpenAI, and the Orb, is now funding CRISPR-based embryo gene editing as the alterer-of-man.And to keep us entertained during this slow-burn apocalyptic invasion, we have KION, an AI-created K-pop star who's clearly created with all he best black goo moments from Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, and the like. It all makes sense if the gift of “UFO technology” may in fact be a series of blueprints to build the alien mind on earth; the name KION, from various languages, translates to ancient-foundation-leader-possessed.
