I am yet to meet an allied health business owner who doesn't want to understand their numbers better, have them all in one place, and know how to use them. But for those who aren't too sure about where to start, it can be fairly intimidating (to say the least). Ever thought to yourself, “Oh, that's good enough for now.” Sure, that bulky Excel spreadsheet might be “good enough” in theory, but at what cost? This episode is an important reminder to have those conversations with the experts, because you probably don't realise how much easier and more valuable streamlining your numbers and processes can be. As I always say: you just don't know what you don't know. That's why we've got the wonderful Cullen Brugman in for this week's PPMP episode. Cullen is the Managing Director of Dashboard Magic. Dashboard Magic builds dashboards to help you see how well your business is performing. There are countless golden nuggets in this conversation, starting with the concept of making data more meaningful, the critical numbers you should have as a business owner, and how to avoid inconsistent data tracking. We also discuss overcoming the challenge of getting the relevant numbers to look at, Cullen's observations on manual data manipulation (find out what you could be missing), and how it all comes back to opportunity cost of time, and cost of mental space. You'll even hear what it's like working with Dashboard Magic, including how the entire process.  If you want to get started on simplifying your data, download the free business metrics provided by Cullen himself by clicking here. What is your “why”? In other words, why do you do what you do? This certainly isn't the first time I've posed this question to you, but there's a reason for that. Just as this week's PPMP guest emphasises, knowing your “why” is integral to giving you that motivation and drive to keep going every day – no matter what is thrown your way. What a pleasure it was to have Sarah Poissant in the studio for this episode. Sarah is the Clinical Director and Owner of The Rainbow Clinic. This week's episode is certainly a reminder of the importance of opening up and the power in vulnerability. Sarah takes us back to the beginning of her journey, from the first few years as a business owner on an intense upwards-slope, to how she made the decision to ask for help when she needed it. Sarah then opens up about her deep personal motivators, her “why”, for being a business owner, reminding us to keep track of our own North Star on our own business journeys. Other wonderful topics you'll hear us discuss include knowing your limitations as a leader, culture and values in the workplace, and why it's so crucial to be proud of your own achievements. You'll also hear Sarah open up about her own personal mental health issues, sharing some touching experiences and how she practices self-care and juggles all the roles in her life – parenting and all. It's a must-have tool that is designed to help business owners get more comfortable with their role and responsibilities, rather than putting out fires and crisis management.  This time around, Jeremy and I discuss legal trends he's noticed over the last 6 months, how business owners can keep their mojo going, and he also runs you through the legal needs of a business from start to finish. What would you say is your biggest pain point when it comes to practice management? When was the last time you reviewed your systems?   Here to help you step-by-step with all your software management systems are General Manager at Be Software International, Leon Chay and CEO and Founder Renato Parletta from IINSIGHT Practice Management Software.  I would have to say one of the most frequent pain points I hear about from allied health business owners is knowing why and when to change up their systems. “I don't have any time!” “It's going to be such a huge deal to migrate any existing software.” “Is it really that necessary?”   If you relate to any of the above statements, then you don't want to miss out on this PPMP episode. As Director and Speech Pathologist at Happy Chatter, Dora is here to share her career ventures in the last couple of years. You may be surprised to learn that she built Happy Chatter in the middle of the pandemic – no easy feat, considering what a difficult time it has been.   If you have transitioned from clinician to business owner, at what point did you realise that you can't do it all?  Dora shares that lightbulb moment for her, and eventually getting to a point of wanting the clinic to run autonomously without the need for her to be there at every waking moment. You'll also hear her insights on being a leader, including the importance of learning to let go. Like “taking the weight off my shoulders,” she says.  We also get onto the topic of team culture – something of utmost importance for Dora and Happy Chatter. She shares how she fosters positivity and open communication, as well as how she instils business values within the team. With such a vibrant culture and high recruitment and retention rates, it's only normal that I ask Dora what's her big secret. Listen to the episode to find out.  Other must-listen topics include having the courage to get help when you need it, why Dora loves the Accelerator Mastermind so much, how she gets motivated, and learning to love the numbers. She also opens up about building a leadership team, as well as the importance of forming strong personal and professional networks.  Who is in your support network? Is it time to reach out for help? Do you ever get the sinking feeling that so many other businesses around you are growing and growing? Like larger organisations are getting larger by the hour, and other private practices just keep popping up?  Behind the scenes here at Nacre, there has been quite a lot going on, but something that's definitely stood out is the notion of how we can help Allied Health business owners track their progress - and it just so happens to be the topic for the latest PPMP episode.  For many business owners, this feeling of rising competitiveness can take a toll. But the key is to acknowledge that you can't control how much others grow or flourish.   Learn to let that go. Instead, what you can control is setting your own targets. Measuring your own progress.  Think of Allied Health Businesses as a competitive sport. Or rather, as a solo sport. Think about how you're competing on your own terms - competing against yourself.  What kinds of standards are you setting for yourself? What tools do you use? What questions do you ask yourself?  Every business on the planet should be embracing improvement, but not all of them know quite how.   That's why we've created the Allied Health Biz Quiz. You'll hear all the details in the latest episode, including why you should be completing the quiz, how to complete it, and how it will benefit you and your team.  So, stop waiting and watching on the sidelines, and get into the game.   The Allied Health Biz Quiz is all about helping you get what you want out of it so that the business works for you, not you working for the business.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's a topic with some of the highest volume of questions I receive, and it's certainly a hot conversation at the moment amongst our clients. But have you thought about your approach?  I'm talking about career opportunities.  “How do I sort out salaries across my team?” “How do I get clear on what I can offer?” “How do I get these people into some sort of career system?”  Sound familiar? If so, you won't want to miss the latest PPMP episode.  It's a solo episode where I'm diving into how you can get organised when developing career opportunities for clinicians. (Spoiler alert: It's more than a series of sticky notes on the wall.)  Many allied health business owners are wanting to build that dream team. They want to keep people for the right reasons and the right roles.   Developing career opportunities is complex and requires considerable guidance and planning. But it does all start back at the basics, which I cover in the episode.  Tension arises for business owners when they pay people in an unstructured way, with various roles and responsibilities, and vague position descriptions.  Listen to the episode for my insights on how to approach your organisation chart (current and future), referencing the Award, and working through core duties, measurable performance KPI's, and more.  Without great coaching and business mentoring, you don't know what you don't know. And in that case, you don't always know what a sophisticated, effective career framework looks like.  Yes, it can be complex, but it does really make a difference when you organise and get clear on career opportunities that you can offer.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Many allied health professionals don't know about this secret resource..but I'm pleased to say that it is now the prime focus for this week's new PPMP episode.  Ben Turnbull is my special guest this time around. He is a committee member of the Allied Health Assistant Network Australia (A.H.A.N.A for short), which is that secret resource I'm so excited to share with you all.  A.H.A.N.A is a national network for Allied Health Assistants (AHAs). It is designed to support them to improve the output, quality, and efficiency of allied health professionals, and services provided publicly and privately.  Being an AHA is an old, established profession, but it is still finding its feet. It's certainly an exciting career pathway for many people, which is why A.H.A.N.A is such an important platform to help connect AHA's with relevant resources and information.  This then helps them work independently or with an allied health professional, who can then connect with A.H.A.N.A, so they can assist them to better support AHA's in their workplace.  We cover a vast amount of territory on the AHA topic. You'll hear Ben's thoughts on where it's going as a profession, current latest-and-greatest formal training and whether it's changing, the differences between a support worker and AHA, and trends that Ben is seeing about AHA's going off alone and setting up their own businesses.   We also discuss the changes Ben has seen in the last five years, as well as his visions for where the A.H.A.N.A network is going in the future.  If you are hesitant about AHA's and their role, listen to the episode to hear Ben break down any common pain points. Do you stay true to your business values on a daily basis?  Our values are the foundation of our everyday lives - no matter if that's personally or professionally.   For Jessica Young, Speech Pathologist and Director at Young Speech, it's about understanding and being aware that our attitudes can really shape the lives of others.   It was a pleasure having Jessica on the newest PPMP episode, as she shares her journey shifting from clinician to CEO, having a 2020 pandemic plan, and framing the NDIS registration audit as a positive business-strengthening activity for her and her team.  Jessica even gives her best pro-tip for those who might feel easily discouraged when comparing themselves to other businesses.  But what especially stands out are Jessica's learnings as a leader along the way.  Sometimes we forget to take a moment to remember how far we've come, and fully acknowledge what the business has taught us both personally and professionally.   What do your core business values reflect? We can learn from Jessica's experience that it's important to enforce a team culture that has an expectation of being able to grow and continuously improve.   Maintaining a positive mindset and regarding your values as a tangible part of the business are essentially the threads that run right through from the first moment to the last.  How are you incorporating your business values? What is your business vision, and does your team know it too?  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What were your early days of business like? Plenty of finding-your-feet kind of days? Networking with mutually supportive people? Whatever your experience was like, I'm sure you (like many fellow allied health business owners) struggled to find your way with time management. Perhaps it's even still something you're working on today.  For Claire Welshe, Founding Director of Echelon Edge Occupational Therapy, she's been on a disciplined journey to get into those deep zones of concentration. You know, those zones where you can truly focus on your business. Discipline is something we need in many areas in life. But, as business owners, it's more than that. It's about using discipline as a part of creating lasting habits. There are endless learning opportunities from Claire in this week's PPMP episode. She demystifies OT and medico legal work, explores how the business started, using technology better, recruitment, falling in love with numbers, and her Virtual Assistant Unicorn. Claire even walks us through how she leverages flexibility across an average week, ensuring she has time for what matters most to her. Time management and tracking your time can be confronting. But if you sit back and reimagine your time, you can do things more productively and efficiently. Here's a great nugget to leave you with before listening to the episode: Until you start changing the way you use your time, often, nothing else will change. What kind of tech training do you have in your business? Technology is forever evolving, and I'm no stranger to feeling the pressure when trying to keep up.   It's so easy to fall out of love with new tech before it's even operational - but what if there was better training available to remove that stress and confusion?  Samantha Garrett is here for the newest PPMP episode to shed some light on the wide world of tech in business. Samantha's official title is Technology Trainer at Using Technology Better. Her unofficial title? Efficiency, Productivity and Organisation Nerd - three areas she loves to help people with.  We have an in-depth chat about getting tech off to a good start across your team, points of vulnerability with cybersecurity in business, and she also gives us a rundown on Google and Microsoft systems (pop the kettle on and sit back - you're in for a massively detailed treat).  At the end of the day, having better tech training within your business is going to help with everyday efficiency and productivity - more than you probably think.  In the words of Samantha, “You don't know what you don't know.”  There are always ways to use the tools in front of you better, and if that means bringing some external help into your business, you're only going to benefit in the end.  Training (no matter if it's technology, professional development, etc.) is an investment in yourself and in your people.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What do your expectations look like when it comes to payments in the healthcare space? Is your system complicated or simplified?  For many allied health businesses, dealing with health payments can mean dealing with many challenges - from patients now knowing their out-of-pocket expenses, to your team waiting weeks for payments. Here to demystify the wide world of healthcare payments is none other than Adrian Miles - GM of Strategy and Marketing at Medipass. In the latest PPMP episode, Adrian covers plenty of areas to help open up the conversation for allied health business owners to explore. We discuss the tension around getting clients to pay on the day, how cloud-based solutions will impact systems, NDIS, getting started with Medipass, and so much more. While I'm sure some of you are already onboard, I've no doubt that some of you are questioning whether you have the time to sign up, get started and commit to a healthcare payment digital system. How much time will it take me to rework my existing operation procedures? Will I have to train others? What if they don't pick it up? The real question here, though, is: How much value and positive change can this shift provide my business? Odds are, getting your payment processes sorted and simplified (and not having to give them a second thought anymore) will add a mountain of value to your business.  Leonardo da Vinci put it best… “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Living and working in remote areas can appear daunting at first, but it's stories like Anna Drum's that give glowing insight into what it's really like working in a rural space in the allied health sector. As a Myotherapist and the Founding Director of Capability Health, Anna opens up on the newest episode of the PPMP podcast about working in Weipa - a small town in Queensland, Australia.  She bears many hats - from Myotherapist, to business owner, to recruiter, to finance officer - and shares what a typical day looks like for her while tackling everything on her plate. Whether you work in a rural area or not, all allied health business owners can get something out of Anna's story on the podcast.  She explores how and why her team works so brilliantly, her process developing front-of-house through building the right systems, and how they maintain a sense of community. I think many of you can agree that managing time as a business owner is no easy feat - and Anna's insights into how she does it efficiently and productively are valuable to say the least. Part of that is about knowing when to ask for help. Are you asking for enough help when you need it? It may seem obvious, but it's easy for us to forget that when more help is around, the more we can achieve things. Dataplayer is quite a little secret sitting in the allied health market at the moment, and it's a secret I'm sure many of you are keen to explore.  Steven goes into detail in the episode, but a quick rundown of Dataplayer is that it integrates with your practice management software to then spring to life in visual dashboards, which then automatically generates reports and graphs. Essentially, Dataplayer is helping reduce time and fatigue allied health business owners often feel - everything becomes visual so that you can easily and quickly compare numbers.  Through managing your data effectively, you can not only save time, but also suddenly have a consistent data set - something you and your leadership team can analyse and start to ask complex questions about. To start off I'd like you to sit back and really think about this for a minute...  What has made the biggest change in your journey as an allied health business owner?  For Kelly Ketchell - Business Owner at Active Life Therapies - it was when she started working ON the business rather than IN it. You've probably heard about the whole “ON” “IN” concept before, but in this week's new PPMP episode we've got a perfect example of why it's so important.  Kelly shares her own journey shifting from clinician to business owner. Listen as she opens up about why working ON the business is just so critical, what books you should be reading, and why it's so important to know your numbers. There are so many more pearls of wisdom throughout the episode, like her NDIS predictions, the software developed by her father, and even an insight into what makes her team so brilliant at Active Life. Something that certainly stood out to me was Kelly's commitment to recruiting to her core values - a realisation that has been a big learning curve for her. Have you refined your recruitment process? What core values do you have set in place that you look back on when hiring someone? If you're on that path shifting from clinician to business owner, it's interesting to sit down and take a few minutes to think about your future plans. Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months time? Even though you've already made a big step as it is, you and your business can continue to flourish, hence the importance of having your future plans set in place. From the importance of rest to working in a COVID future, navigating the HR world can certainly feel intimidating as a business owner. It’s for that reason I’m so pleased to have Christopher Smith on the newest PPMP episode this week. Chris is the Founding Director of Happy HR – an all-in-one cloud-based HRIS and enrolment platform with support from degree qualified HR professionals. Chris and I get right into things from the get-go with a long and deep conversation surrounding the COVID vaccine.  He shares his thoughts on vaccines in the allied health workspace, including the phases you should expect as we continue moving through this COVID-2021 world. Seeing as the idea of vaccines can cause stress for many, it’s important to understand that this is going to be an obligation for employees at some point. In turn, it certainly helps to have insights from HR experts like Chris. Other talking points in the episode include contractors and casuals, forgotten claw back clauses, as well as a look at organisational culture. One of the biggest questions Chris urges business owners to think about is, “What is my work culture?”  If you haven’t already, it’s time to take a real thorough look at your company’s culture.  What does your team think about your environment? Work-life balance? Remuneration? Development? Values? Culture is about having strategies that work for the type of business you are. It’s also about recognising that culture comes from the leader and works its way down.  Culture is not a set-and-forget kind of thing. It is dynamic and ever-changing…like a garden in need of attention.  Another element is about truly listening to your staff. Ask yourself questions like, “Do I value my staff? Could I be perceived as taking them for granted?” If you aren’t putting things into place to demonstrate that love and appreciation, you can lose great people. So, what are you communicating with your culture?   Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Your level of success rarely exceeds your level of personal development” One of my all-time favourite quotes, and one that so perfectly ties into this week’s new PPMP episode with Michelle Terkelsen - one of the Founders and Managing Directors of People Leaders, alongside Jan Terkelsen (who couldn’t make it this time around, but will be joining us to share even more leadership insights in a 2.0 episode in the coming weeks). From revealing what they do with their Mastermind Programs, to their experience during COVID 2020 and their observations about leadership at the time, this episode is chock-a-block with valuable leadership insights for all allied health business owners. Self-leadership is a prevalent topic in this episode. It really urges us to stop and think about whether we’re investing in ourselves enough. Because, as I always say, your business is rarely going to be better than you are. When was the last time you looked to expand your leadership toolkit? Have you stepped into your leadership power yet?  Another highlight of the episode is certainly our discussion on Leadership Shadows. You’ll have to give it a listen to fully understand what I’m talking about, but a glimpse into the concept is that it’s all about lighting up those blind spots to put you back on the right path. You are in some ways metaphorically training to run a marathon in business. Just like training properly for a marathon in a way that suits your abilities, finding your leadership power is about doing those sustaining practices that are unique to you, relevant, and impactful.  It’s not about what you do and don’t do, it’s about your commitment to yourself and stepping into your leadership power. I’ll leave you with this gem to think about: How are you prioritising your own leadership development?   Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Whether you’re already in the midst of it or thinking about getting started, navigating a “business marriage” can be one of the most rewarding experiences when running a business. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with its challenges. Business partnerships are beautiful things (hence the “business marriage” term I’ve coined), and just like regular marriages, it can be difficult finding that perfect person. That’s why it’s so wonderful and encouraging to hear about success stories like that of Principle Occupational Therapist Melissa Bryan and Principal Clinical Psychologist Annabelle Griffin from Crisalida -  a therapy centre in the Northern parts of Melbourne. From reminiscing on their partnership to their learnings during COVID, they open up on this week’s newest PPMP episode. While this is a great episode for anyone who co-owns a business or is thinking about it, there are also plenty of insights on leadership, staff support, and recruitment - important insights for all business owners. Melissa and Annabelle also share their wonderful words of wisdom for other business owners (not just those in business partnerships). Quite simply put, their best advice is that it’s worth it. As Annabelle shares,  “It’s possibly more work than you think it’s going to be, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.” You’ll hear their full tips in the episode, but one of the biggest ones that stood out was about knowing that your partner is fully committed. No one likes walking on eggshells with others, and it’s no different when it comes to business partnerships. Can you be open and honest with your business partner and vice-versa? Before going into business with them, can you trust that they will put as much time and effort in as you?  These are all crucial questions to be asking as co-business owners when navigating a business marriage.   Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Embracing your leadership role is important in many ways in a personal sense, but what about viewing it from your team’s perspective? Is your team being held back because you haven’t fully stepped into your management leadership role? This week’s new PPMP episode asks us to question exactly that, as Hannah Dunn joins me to chat. Hannah is the Founding Director of D.O.T.S. Occupational Therapy for Children.  In this episode, she takes us through her business expansion, recruitment challenges and strategies, as well as her 2021 predictions. What stands out the most, though, is her journey embracing her own management leadership role. By stepping further away from the clinical side, she’s been able to watch D.O.T.S. grow more than ever before. If you’re looking at embracing your leadership role more, but not sure where to start, this episode with Hannah is sure to incite inspiration. And if you’re not, well, everyone can learn something from her tenacity. Hannah’s story and leadership journey demonstrates the value of taking that leap and stepping out of clinical work. She shows us that once you take that time to truly focus more on your leadership role, your impact is actually amplified.  You can create remarkable customer service and clinicians, who can then can disperse and spread the ripple of impact. Are you yet to take that step? What is holding you back?  Have you thought about how much your team can grow and the impact you can make by stepping more into your management leadership role?    Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What have you learned along the way as you’ve come into your own? For Sarah Teoh, Director and Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist of Look Who’s Talking, the lessons never end. It was delightful to have Sarah on the latest episode of the PPMP podcast. She walks us through her clinic’s beginnings 17 years ago (yes, pre-medicare days) up until now.  A lot of it has been about stepping up to become more team facing, which is a major talking point in the episode (and a common goal for many allied health business owners). It’s no different for Sarah, who explores how her team is growing and why she feels the need to become more team facing. This ties back into the notion of learning along the way and differentiating roles. It was an opportunity for Sarah to question whether she really knew what to do. By doing that, she was able to differentiate all the hats and stop blurring the lines between roles. If you’re juggling several roles, how can you differentiate them? Are the people in your team able to develop themselves and get a real 360 degree view? I have no doubt that many of you can relate to her story. From learning the “what-not-to-do’s” to learning to recruit the right people for her team, there are so many inspiring nuggets throughout the episode. Another important part of the episode is Sarah’s reflection on her long-term goals. She strives for a day where she can shut herself off to plan the future...something many of us need but don’t often get the time to do. What is it that you need to know when thinking more long-term? Where do you want to be in the future?    Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Investing in yourself and managing fear present themselves in many ways when you’re a business owner.  Perhaps you’ve got a few non-negotiable weeks scheduled throughout the year for recharging your batteries. Or perhaps it’s overcoming fears to set a bigger vision for your business. For Kait Cummins, Founding Director of The Play Project, it’s both. What a pleasure it was to have Kait on this week’s newest PPMP episode. She walks us through her business journey, describing what it looks like now whilst reminiscing about how she got there. From the benefits of hiring a solid admin team, to the importance of pooling learning lessons, the golden nuggets in this episode are gleaming bright as ever. There are even some tidbits for those looking, or who are already in the process of, shifting away from a hands-on position to a more directorial role. Kait describes this transition as she explores her focus areas during the process. But among all these wonderful insights, what stands out most to me is this idea of learning about investing in yourself and managing fear. Two vital concepts that so often get swept under the managerial rug, or shoved aside into the “later” pile. What are you doing to invest in yourself? To recharge those batteries?  In the words of Kait, “recharging is heaven”. Through taking time for yourself, you give yourself the ability to control your mind and work through those fears and challenges that have been running through your thoughts. Are there certain fears that are holding you back from doing something you've always wanted to do in your business?   Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What role do you think technology plays in allied healthcare? It’s pretty clear by now that many practices have embraced telehealth, but how can we keep the momentum going? Essentially, we are in the midst of a digital transformation event. The power of technology in allied health is more evident than ever before. Re-imagining healthcare is all about embracing digital health innovations in this new digital age.  While there is undoubtedly a lot of value in the traditional in-person model, an augmentation or enhancement to modernize healthcare is how we will evolve. I bet you’re pretty keen to hear more, right? Fear not, for this week’s PPMP podcast has all the goodies when it comes to emerging trends in the digital health marketplace. And who better to get us excited for this digital movement than Yianni Serpanos - Founder and CEO of Coreplus and Founder and Executive Director of HealthTechX.  It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Yianni. His drive to make a difference by modernizing and transforming healthcare using innovative thinking is incredibly uplifting and powerful.  There are so many golden nuggets in this episode that I have no doubt you’re going to need a notebook on hand to write it all down (trust me on this one). We get deep on the topic of the power of technology in allied health, along with his thoughts on how 2020 has affected business owners, the value of SMS, and the concept of the digital health nomad.  One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is a reminder that allied health service delivery is not only one-on-one and it doesn’t fit in one type of box.  We are free to open our minds and take things further. And there is no better time than now with these enormous shifts that have occurred due to the pandemic. Being able to use our scarce resource of time in a more optimal way to design our lives is incredibly powerful and valuable. I mean, think about it: How can we blend real world settings with digital world settings to continue helping people with their healthcare goals?   Nacre Links:  Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Pinterest See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
