SummaryWhat if disagreement could actually unite us? Judge Thomas Griffith, former DC Circuit Court judge, joins us to explore the Constitution's genius: its embrace of disagreement as a path to the common good. Judge Griffith shares personal stories from his judicial career, including his bipartisan support for Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and dispels the myth of “partisans in robes.” He challenges listeners to defend the Constitution through humility, compromise, and local action, and offers hope for those discouraged by political division.About Our GuestJudge Thomas B. Griffith was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit by President George W. Bush in 2005, and served until his retirement in 2020. He is currently a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, a Fellow at the Wheatley Institute, and Special Counsel at Hunton Andrews Kurth. He is also engaged in rule of law initiatives in Central and Eastern Europe. Earlier in his career, Judge Griffith served as General Counsel of Brigham Young University and as Senate Legal Counsel, the nonpartisan chief legal officer of the U.S. Senate. In 2021, President Biden appointed him to the President's Commission on the Supreme Court. He is also a co-author of Lost, Not Stolen: The Conservative Case that Biden Won and Trump Lost the 2020 Presidential Election. pWotD Episode 2952: 2025 Polish presidential election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 222,847 views on Sunday, 1 June 2025 our article of the day is 2025 Polish presidential election.Presidential elections were held in Poland on 18 May 2025. As no candidate secured more than 50% of the vote, a second round was held on 1 June 2025. Incumbent president Andrzej Duda is ineligible for re-election, as he is term-limited. The election saw the largest number of candidates tied with 1995, with 13 candidates running for President. The incumbent government supported candidate Rafał Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw and runner-up of the 2020 election, who came first in the first round of voting, followed by conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki who was backed by Law and Justice. The right-wing candidates, Nawrocki, Sławomir Mentzen (New Hope) and Grzegorz Braun of the monarchist Confederation of the Polish Crown overperformed polls, winning 29.5%, 14.8% and 6.3% respectively, coming in second, third and fourth. Centrist candidate Szymon Hołownia (PL2050) and the left-wing candidates of Magdalena Biejat (The Left) and Adrian Zandberg (Partia Razem) did poorly. Nawrocki ran on a Christian nationalist and culturally conservative platform and against Donald Tusk's ruling coalition, demonstratively throwing a copy of Gender Queer: A Memoir into a paper shredder during the 2025 campaign. Nawrocki's platform called for significant government intervention in the economy, maintaining close ties between the Catholic Church in Poland and the Polish government, the broad criminalization of abortion, and opposition to the legalization of same-sex marriage or civil unions, citing the sexual ethics of the Catholic Church and protection of the family. Trzaskowski ran on economic liberalization, European integration, the broad legalization of abortion, the introduction of same-sex civil unions, and a greater role for local governments in voivodeships. They differed on further strengthening relations with the European Union and Ukraine's membership in NATO, with Tzraskowski supporting. Nawrocki opposed Ukraine's asscession into NATO and strengthening of relations with the EU. Both ran on pro-western platforms. The election result was the closest in Polish history since the collapse of the Polish People's Republic. Prior to the election observers characterised a Nawrocki win as hurting Donald Tusk's government, due to bills requiring 60% support in the Parliament in cases of presidential objection. The results continued Law and Justice and its aligned presidential candidates only losing one presidential election in the last 20 years. The first-round results also showed a significant political strengthening of the Polish nationalist Confederation Liberty and Independence. Exit polling indicated that younger voters were more likely to favor Nawrocki in the second round and other right-wing parties in the first; the far-right Confederation Liberty and Independence alliance had by far the best performance in its history and performed best among the youngest generation of Polish voters. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 06:49 UTC on Monday, 2 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2025 Polish presidential election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

On 18 May 2025, Romania held a pivotal presidential runoff between George Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and Nicușor Dan, the pro-European independent and mayor of Bucharest. This election followed the annulment of the 2024 vote due to allegations of foreign interference, leading to heightened political tension and public scrutiny. Simion's first-round victory, securing approximately 41% of the vote, has raised concerns about Romania's future alignment with the EU and NATO, given his nationalist rhetoric and scepticism towards European integration. In the run-off election on 18 May, Nicușor Dan won the election and is poised to take the Romanian presidency, on a platform emphasising democratic values, anti-corruption, and continued cooperation with Western partners. This IIEA webinar explores the implications of the election outcome for Romania's domestic political landscape, foreign policy, and role within the EU. The discussion features Professor Cristian Preda and Dr. Claudia Bădulescu and was moderated by Dr. Barry Colfer. Speaker bios: Professor Cristian Preda is a professor of political science at the University of Bucharest and served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2019. The virtual guest talk will assess the results of the May 18 first round of Poland's presidential election. It is unlikely that any candidate will secure a majority, leading to a runoff on June 1 between Rafał Trzaskowski and PiS-backed Nawrocki. The vote reveals a fragmented political landscape, breaking the traditional PO–PiS dominance, with left-wing candidates collectively gaining notable support while far-right candidates perform poorly. The second round will likely hinge on ideological divides. If Trzaskowski wins, it could finally unlock key reforms long blocked by the outgoing PiS-aligned president. Monika Sus is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the Institute of Political Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw, Poland), and a Fellow at the Robert Schuman Center for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. Her research interests focus on international relations, with a particular emphasis on European and transatlantic security cooperation, and the EU's foreign, security, and defence policy. She recently published an article in the The British Journal of Politics and International Relations, exploring the Polish reaction to the war in Ukraine: Status-seeking in wartime: Poland's leadership aspirations and the response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Two weeks after the far right's George Simion garnered a whopping 41 percent in the first round of presidential elections, a surge in voter turnout instead propelled the pro-EU mayor of Bucharest Nicosur Dan onto a rocky road to victory. Dan wasn't even a candidate when the constitutional council annulled last November's first round of voting and barred pro-Russian TikTok star Calin Georgescu over foreign meddling and campaign financing records that claimed zero spending whatsoever. The call to do over the election drew criticism from the likes of JD Vance and Elon Musk in the US but also from some European liberals who felt the issue should have been sorted at the ballot box. We'll ask how this result's going down and more broadly about a onetime Soviet bloc dictatorship often dogged by corruption and that's felt the growing pains of EU membership. What next for a frontline state to the war in Ukraine and how does the rest of Europe address the grievances of citizens in a fast-changing world? Produced by Rebecca Gnignati, Elisa Amiri, Jimena Morales-Velasco.

However, on election day, Noboa was declared the winner with a lead of more than 11%. Clearing the FOG speaks with Pedro Labayen Herrera, who is a researcher at the Center for Economic and Policy Research where he focuses on Ecuador. Labayen was present for the elections. Send us a textFew offices in the history of our government have produced more harm, to more people, more often, and more efficiently that the office created in 1973 to investigate the Watergate Scandal. The Special Prosecutor's statute stayed on the books the rest of the 20th century and was used to wound the reelection campaign of George H. W. Bush, and then cripple the final years of the Presidency of Bill Clinton. It has horribly damaged the historical legacies of four United States Presidents: Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Ironically, the very party who dreamed this evil institution up, the Democratic Party,  was the same one to end it when the statue expired in 1999, but only after it had been effectively used to demolish a President of their own party, even as the Impeachment attempt failed to remove Bill Clinton from office.  Then congress invented its bastardized cousin, the Special Counsel statue. While it does have some modest restraints compared to the absolute total powers of the Special Prosecutor's statute, the record of abuse there may not be fully known until our current era, centered around Donald Trump, is over. As we look back at the 1992 Presidential Election and its controversial end. We thought this the perfect opportunity to show to our listeners the full impact of the 30 years of dishonesty that has been used to devastatingly wound four American Presidencies. But even worse than the damage done to the institution of the Presidency is the personal destruction it has wrought on the innocent aids to these Presidents. Often young men and women, whose only real crime was earnestly wanting to play role in the history of the nation and seize the opportunity so few people get in life, the chance to work for the President of the United States. Instead, many faced prison time, and were financially wiped out, while the most dastardly, horrible , unethical people you could have ever dreamed up paraded themselves on television and in books as lawyers who champion justice while playing on the trusting nature of a naive public that still believes that our Justice System is the one uncorrupted branch of government left in the land. Here we lay everything out, the abuses of power, and the intentionally corrupt birth of the most evil office our government has ever created. We hope it will serve as a warning for what we have seen in our more modern times, so that perhaps wise heads will see to it that this institution dies, with a stake through its heart. Like this bloodsucking vampire of an institution of division and destruction  truly deserves.  Boundless Insights - with Aviva KlompasIn depth analysis of what's happening in Israel—and why it matters everywhere.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyQuestions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Marine Le Pen is the frontrunner for France's presidential elections – but after a judge sentenced her to a 5-year ban from politics, she may be barred from running at all. If a judge can bar a leading candidate from running, is their country really a democracy? On Monday, a French court sentenced Marine Le Pen to a 5-year political ban, finding her guilty of embezzling EU funds for her National Rally party. The immediate ban, upheld during appeals, will reportedly block her from the 2027 presidential race. Le Pen called the ruling ‘authoritarian' and claimed it violates the rule of law, and has vowed to fight the ruling. According to CNN, “The court's presiding judge, Bénédicte de Perthuis, said Le Pen's actions amounted to a “serious and lasting attack on the rules of democratic life in Europe, but especially in France.”” Jerome Riviere is a French politician, lawyer, and entrepreneur. He served as a Member of the French Parliament for Alpes-Maritimes from 2002 to 2007 and later joined the National Rally, becoming a Member of the European Parliament in 2019. This is a re-run episode recorded in 2024 - importantly - before the 2024 Presidential Election, but its insights and lessons about ChangeMaking are still deeply relevant! What are some of the skills or insights shared by some of America's extraordinary change makers, people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Alicia Garza or Loretta Ross? In particular, what can these people teach us about how to build larger movements for change?Anand Giridhardhas, author of Persuaders, talks us through what he discovered when he interviewed these and other American change makers. In this chat Anand shares the story behind why he came to write this book – about his own story as a bridge builder between cultures and the lessons he learnt about how people navigate change. The chat then turns to his book Persuaders – identifying lessons about how persuaders communicate, how they work across difference, and how important it is for movements to be able to think about the kind of implications that change making has on communities while they are prosecuting change with communities. This chat is all about Persuaders, but Anand has written four powerful books: India Calling, True American, Winners Take All and Persuaders.
