[School of Everything Else 2022] Lunatic eats strange fungus, throws reptile carcases and banana peel out of his car. Everyone cheers!  One of the most beloved of game series, the racing title that prides itself on accessibility (most of the time) and appeal to all ages, with a consistently high bar of quality (imagine if every Sonic game had that) and a lasting appeal that both piques nostalgia and makes us excited for the future. What began as a multiplayer sequel to vintage SNES launch title F-Zero became a flagship Nintendo showcase of their core Mario-related characters. We look at the development history and how the series has evolved over thirty years, the gambles that didn't pay off, the elements we now take for granted and the key aspects that make it work so well.  What's abundantly clear is that everyone has a different favourite and everyone has at least one example in the series that they just bounce off. We eschew discussion on the obscure arcade games, the remote control car for your mansion, and the Switch DLC rollout, as that won't be finished for years, but we DO talk about the phone-based Tour (2019) and its microtransaction-plagued experience. For this epic show we played through every cup, and tried every multiplayer and battle mode in Super Mario Kart on the SNES (1992), Mario Kart 64 (1997) Super Circuit for GBA (2001) Double Dash for GameCube (2003) DS (2005) Wii (2008) 7 for 3DS (2011) and 8 for Wii U and Switch (2014). And yes, we do talk about Tour for phones (2019).   The other unexpected and fascinating side of the show to pay particular attention to, which didn't become apparent until the edit is how Nintendo advertised each game over three decades. Their approach and audience changes over time and you can really hear that in the commercials. 1993 erschien in Europa das erste «Mario Kart » für das SNES und begründete ein neues Genre - die Fun-Racer. Seither versuchten eine Konkurrenten Mario die Butter von den Reifen zu nehmen, doch ausser Diddy Kong fuhr niemand im Windschatten von Mario mit. Seither folgten sieben weitere «Mario Kart »-Games für stationäre Konsolen und Handhelds von Nintendo. Mit 7,36 Millionen Einheiten weltweit war das 2014 erschienene «Mario Kart 8» das kommerziell erfolgreichste Game für Nintendos Wii U. Die Switch-Version ist nun erstmals eine upgegradete Version eines schon erschienenen Games der «Mario Kart »-Reihe. Der Zusatz «Deluxe» beinhaltet alles von seinem Wii-U-Vorgänger (inklusive DLCs) und mehr. Allen voran der überarbeitete Battle-Modus, der in seiner letzten Fassung einiges zu wünschen übrig liess, da die Schlachten nur auf normalen Strecken stattfanden. Die Deluxe-Variante enthält hingegen acht komplett neue Arenen, in denen man sich in fünf unterschiedlichen Modi mit Bomben und Schildkrötenpanzer bekämpft, Münzen sammelt oder Räuber und Gendarm spielt - so vielseitig, kreativ und spannend war noch kein Battle-Modus! Im Rennmodus gibt es keine neuen Strecken. Die bisherigen 48 (!) Strecken bieten aber mehr als genug Abwechslung und einige davon gehören zum Besten der Serie. Bei den Fahrern gesellen sich zu den bisherigen 36 Charakteren nochmals sechs neue dazu, sowie einige neue Autoteile. Wie etwa in «Double Dash!!» können Spieler zwei Items mit sich tragen und zwei Power-Ups feiern Ihr Comeback. Mittels Geist können Gegenstände anderer Spieler geklaut werden. Und mit der Feder kann man über Hindernisse oder andere Spieler hinweg springen. Insbesondere Anfänger freuen sich auch über die erstmalige starke Fahrhilfen (die allesamt abschaltbar sind): Ihr bleibt dank unsichtbaren Barrieren stets auf der Strecke und ein Tempomat sorgt dafür, dass Ihr nicht Gas geben müsst und Euch somit auf die Strecke und Extra-Einsatz konzentrieren könnt. Auch sind (fast) alle Fahrer und Strecken zu Beginn freigeschaltet - dies freut insbesondere Kenner des achten Teils - Ihr müsst nicht nochmals alles freispielen und könnt sogleich auf alle Klassen inklusive gespiegelter Strecken und 200ccm zugreifen. Toller Service! Online klappt auch wie beim Vorgänger - hier hätte man sich noch mehr Möglichkeiten gewünscht - zum Beispiel ein neues Punktesystem, Lobby mit mehr Auswahl. Grafisch wurde schliesslich die Kanten geglättet, mehr Farben eingesetzt, kurzum: Das schönste «Mario Kart» für daheim und das mit Abstand schönste für unterwegs. Fazit: Ein Rennspass - insbesondere auch dank den neuen Fahrhilfen, dem riesigen Umfang und dem starken Battle-Modus - für alle. (raf)
