The patient's capillary refill had changed and was slowly getting worse and worse.Concerned, Diana spoke to her charge nurse and was told not to worry about it.She spoke with her colleagues who also told her not to worry. She paged the on-call resident in the middle of the night, but got the same response.Diana's gut was telling her something was wrong, but she lacked the clinical data to back it up.So what do you do?For insight, Connie spoke with Dr. Sarah Kim, a specialist in emotion-focused mindful psychotherapy, about the importance of trusting your gut. We'll also discuss being your patient's advocate and learning to forgive yourself when things don't end well despite all your efforts.

PAUL THOMAS FILLS US IN ABOUT CHILDHOOD VACCINE REALITY

SURVIVING HEALTHCARE

Paul Thomas, MD, has fought a one man war against the childhood vaccines for a decade. More than 14,000 of his patients have not had all the childhood vaccines, although fewer than 800 had none. When he hired a statistician to study them, the man walked out of his cubicle after two days and called Paul over. The practice showed conclusive proof that vaccines massively increase autism, psych diagnoses, office visits, and all kinds of infections and inflammatory diseases. His completely unvaccinated patients were the healthiest children in his practice.Paul describes the blowback he experienced from the big-Pharma-influenced Oregon medical board. One source reported, “After publishing the most significant real-world, peer-reviewed study showing data, over time, that children receiving fewer vaccines were healthier than those following the CDC vaccine schedule, the Oregon Medical Board (OMB), emergently and without filing charges, took his license. This emergency suspension resulted in Dr. Paul losing not only his license but all health plan contracts, hospital privileges, board certifications, and his ability to practice medicine and make a living for this last year.” Paul finally jettisoned his medical license at about the time of this interview. This gives him the power to say what he believes in the future. Our wide-ranging conversation included: How he was smeared by idiot journalists who DFR (don't freaking read). They claimed it was his fault that a kid who he had never seen developed tetanus. How he gradually became aware of many “controversies” in medical care that make so much money for the industry. All about his book, The Vaccine-Friendly Plan, which he wrote before he fully understood how bad vaccines were. He now says that childhood vaccinations all have overwhelmingly unhealthy effects. How mercury was recognized as toxic and banned except for multi-dose flu vaccine. I did not get a chance to discuss the Cochrane Reviews about the flu vax, which I believe says it is useless and toxic. How to rid your mouth of mercury amalgams by going to a “biological” dentist. We discussed mercury consumption from fish. How aluminum was another seriously toxic substance that we should never use, either orally, by injection, or on the skin surface (deodorants). How the Hepatitis B vaccine, which contains aluminum, started being used for infants about the time mercury was taken off the market in the early 2000s. How it is supposedly justified for preventing this sexually transmitted disease, which is insane for newborns. How Tylenol should be taken off the market because it depletes an important anti-oxidant, NAC. How aspirin is safer but has been smeared with an association to a serious condition called Reye's Syndrome.Discussion about magnesium deficiency, how to take it orally, or by putting it in your bath or on your skin. Why SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is related to SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome), and how both are made-up diagnoses that were created to disguise vaccine injuries. I told Dr. Thomas how I convince people that childhood vaccines cause autism. I say that there are no studies of vaccine effectiveness—none—but there are 10,000 kids in the US who fell down after getting a vaccine, start banging their heads, and never spoke again. Paul said more than 95 percent of these had a vaccine within a week, and he corrected me—this happens to 10,000 kids a year. To read the rest, see HERE.Support the show

Sooner or later your baby or child will be exposed to germs and may end up getting sick. If your baby goes to daycare or to other places they may interact with many children such as a church nursery, play group or public play areas, they may get sick at a younger age, but that does help them build immunity. Some children may not be exposed to a lot of germs until they start attending pre-school or school. Either way, your child will eventually be exposed to some common illnesses.Jade Elliott sat down with Dr. Shellie Ring, a pediatrician with Intermountain Healthcare to talk about common contagious illnesses your baby might be exposed to at daycare or other public settings. Some of the most contagious diseases among babies and young children:RSVRespiratory syncytial virus. Common contagious virus that infects the respiratory tract among children under age two. Symptoms are similar to a cold, but if it progresses it can affect breathing and become serious. When babies can't breathe well, they may refuse to breastfeed or bottle-feed. They may get dehydrated and not produce wet diapers. Call your doctor if you see these symptoms. Seek immediate medical attention if breathing is rapid or significantly impaired or lips or fingernails turn blue.Pink EyeThe official name for pink eye is conjunctivitis which is when the membrane that lines your eyelid becomes inflamed. Symptoms in the eye are redness, itchiness, grittiness, discharge that forms a crust during the night and make it difficult for your baby to open their eye in the morning. It's very contagious and can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction or in newborns by an incompletely opened tear duct.If your young child is around someone who has pink eye, take these precautions: wash hands often, don't touch your eyes. Don't share towels or washcloths and use a clean towel and washcloth daily.Treatment for pink eye involves symptom relief. Clean the eyelids with a clean, wet cloth. Applying a cold or warm compress. Prescription antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed and are very effective.Stomach viruses and diarrheaViral gastroenteritis is very common and very contagious. Your baby can get it from sharing a cup or utensils with someone who has the virus or coming into contact with infected fecal matter, and then put their hand in their mouth, which can happen a lot in daycare settings.Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, chills, achiness. It's important to keep them home from daycare if they have these symptoms. When your baby has frequent diarrhea and vomiting, it's important to keep them clean and dry, change their soiled clothes and bedding. Wash fabrics in the hottest, longest cycle available. Dry them on high heat.Treatment for gastroenteritis is to keep your baby hydrated. Depending on your baby's age and how much they're vomiting, your doctor may recommend an oral electrolyte solution. If your baby is eating solid foods ask your doctor whether they should eat their regular diet.Hand Foot Mouth DiseaseSymptoms include fever, sore throat, runny nose, and then a blister-like rash on the hands, feet or in the mouth. Children are contagious during the first week and remain contagious until the rash has disappeared.Treatment for hand, foot mouth disease mostly involves treating the symptoms. The disease should end within 7-10 days. Age-appropriate doses of over the counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help with sore throat pain. Do not give aspirin to babies or children as it can cause Reye's Syndrome. Depending on your child's age sore throats may be eased with cold or frozen foods like fruit popsicles or yogurt. Children over three can benefit from over the counter sore throat sprays that contain pain reliever. How to help prevent your child from getting sickThe younger your baby is the more you'll want to avoid public areas during cold and flu season and avoid being around people that are sick.Importance of proper hand washing and using sanitizer for young children and caregivers before eating and after diaper changing, using the bathroom, touching pets, being in public spaces or if anyone has symptoms.Changing tables and potty chairs, should be sanitized after each use at daycare. Toys and other items frequently touched like bathroom fixtures, drinking fountains, doorknobs or handles should be sanitized daily.Keep your baby up to date on their immunizationsFor diseases that can be prevented with vaccines, such as flu, chicken pox, measles, whooping cough, etc. be sure to talk to your doctor to keep your baby up to date on their immunizations.Click here for more information about viruses and where in Utah they are active. The Baby Your Baby program provides many resources for all pregnant women and new moms in Utah. In 2015, a boy rubbed an entire tube of minty pain relief cream in-between his legs, and it caused his organs to shut down. Majority of modern men I believe are familiar with this action-- you may have accidentally applied it to the area yourself, or to the eyes, where it will hurt for a time that feels like an eternity. Tummy Troubles? The Best Essential Oils for Digestive Problems  If you’re like most people, you probably don’t give much thought to your digestive system except when you’re experiencing a tummy ache or other issues such as gas, constipation, and diarrhea. In this article, we’ll delve into ways to keep your digestion humming along including using essential oils for digestion when things aren’t running smoothly.  Why a Healthy Digestive System Matters  Did you know that not only is your digestive tract important for breaking down food for nourishment, it also plays an important role in immunity, brain health, and cognition!  The Link Between Digestive Health and the Brain  There is an increasing number of scientific studies that have identified a direct link between digestive health and the brain and emotions. Studies consistently show that gut health (or lack thereof) can have an enormous effect on mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and even autism [1-4].  Hippocrates, known as the Father of Medicine (460-370 BC) believed that all disease processes began in the gut. Although the digestive system is often thought to comprise only the stomach and intestines, it is actually much more inclusive than that. In order to function at optimally, the digestive system requires peak performance from the stomach and intestines, as well as the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder.  7 Ways to Improve Gut Health  There are many steps we can take to better care for our digestion. These include:  eating lots of fresh, organic, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables  focusing on the consumption of nutrient-dense foods  taking probiotics and/or enzymes  reducing stress (which has an enormous impact on the gut)  getting better sleep  exercising  using essential oils  Millions of American Suffer from Gut Issues  When the digestive tract is compromised, it can make you feel over-tired, suffer from lowered immunity, gain weight, and experience gastrointestinal discomfort.  Sometimes you experience stomach pain or cramping, as well as belching, gas, and bad breath. At other times you may feel bloated, nauseous, or have other issues.  In the United States alone, the National Institutes of Health advise that 60 to 70 million people are affected by digestive diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) [5].  The Problem with Over-the-Counter Medications  For years, people have relied upon over-the-counter medications for digestive complaints. These products often contain bismuth subsalicylate, which comes from the aspirin family and has anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and acid-reducing action.  The potential problem with these sorts of medications is that they are only recommended for use for a couple of days. This means people who have problems that last longer than that (e.g., IBS, chronic heartburn, or acid reflux from GERD) aren’t supposed to use these products for more than two days.  It’s also not advisable for children to take them, nor anyone with the flu, because bismuth subsalicylate is contraindicated on the label for anyone with the flu, a virus, or chickenpox. Taking this medication increases the risk for the development of Reye’s syndrome, a potentially life-threatening illness.  Are Essential Oils for Digestion a Good Alternative?  Certain essential oils and blends can greatly benefit digestive health due to their anti-inflammatory, calming, anti-spasmodic, and cell-protective benefits.  For example, Organixx Digest Essential Oil Blend was specifically designed to provide relief for a wide range of digestive issues. The four oils in Digest Blend work together in a beautiful synergy and all are backed by research indicating their method of action.  The next time digestive distress strikes try the ready-made Digest Blend or use any or all of the following four essential oils for digestion and create your own blend. The simplest recipe is just to use equal parts of each or try different ratios and see what works best for you.  4 Key Essential Oils for Digestive Problems  1. Ginger Essential Oil  A 2014 meta-analysis [6] of medical studies investigated the efficacy of ginger for early pregnancy nausea and vomiting. Researchers found that at least four days of taking ginger was associated with a five-fold likelihood of improvement in morning sickness symptoms.  A small 2016 study [7] with post-surgical patients found that inhalation of ginger essential oil significantly decreased nausea and vomiting during the first six hours after inhalation of ginger. Ginger has also been found to be beneficial for travel/motion sickness. A small 1988 double-blind randomized placebo trial [8] found ginger to be helpful for vomiting, nausea, cold sweats, and vertigo for Danish naval cadets not accustomed to sailing on heavy seas.  Another small 2013 clinical trial [9] of 13 volunteers with a history of motion sickness found that pre-treating with ginger reduced nausea, quieted stomach activity, and prolonged the period between attacks of nausea. A 2005 study [10] investigated how ginger actually works on the digestive tract. Researchers found that ginger helped relieve intestinal spasms, and also had direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is active during the digestive process. They found that ginger assisted with hyperactive states of the gut as is found with diarrhea and colic.  A 2015 animal study [11] found that ginger essential oil inhibited the formation of gastric ulcers by 85%. Ginger also increased antioxidant enzymes and reduced the erosion, hemorrhaging, and necrosis (untimely cell death) of cells of the stomach wall, thus providing a protective effect. Ginger may also be beneficial in cases of ulcerative colitis, a painful inflammatory condition that can cause rectal bleeding, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramping.  A 2018 animal study [12] found that 6-gingerol, an ingredient in ginger, increased important antioxidants and inhibited the inflammatory pathways that contribute to this disease.  2. Peppermint Essential Oil  Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is well known for the assistance it can provide for our tummies. If you have over-indulged in your favorite food, are feeling nauseous with a virus, or suffer with more chronic problems of the digestive tract, peppermint can be incredibly soothing.  It is a beautifully cooling aromatic oil that is also:  • anti-inflammatory  • anti-spasmodic  • analgesic (pain relieving)  There are many studies that reflect the benefits of peppermint oil for the digestive system. For instance, a 2007 study [13] found a 50% reduction in the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in 75% of patients who tried peppermint oil for their symptoms.  Indeed, a 2019 review [14] of a dozen randomized trials including over 800 patients using peppermint oil for IBS symptoms found that peppermint oil was safe and effective.  2013 research [15] found that both peppermint and spearmint reduced the intensity and frequency of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.  An older 2008 study [16] investigated the use of peppermint for dyspepsia (pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, also known as indigestion). Researchers found that peppermint oil was safe and effective for dyspepsia, and also for reducing the abdominal pain, flatulence, and diarrhea for those with IBS.  Studies have found that peppermint oil is good for children, too. In a 2014 review [17] of 14 clinical trials involving nearly 2,000 children, peppermint oil was found to reduce the frequency, duration, and severity of abdominal pain. [Caution: only use essential oil with children under the direct supervision of a qualified practitioner.]  3. Lemon Essential Oil  Lemon (Citrus limon) has an uplifting fresh citrus aroma. Lemons have a long history of use by traditional Ayurvedic doctors as an aid for many ailments, including digestion. Modern research is starting to catch up, and it shows that lemon oil relieves nausea and vomiting and is:  • anti-inflammatory  • antimicrobial  • anti-parasitic  • anti-fungal  A 2014 clinical trial [18] found that inhaling lemon oil significantly relieved nausea and vomiting in 100 pregnant women. A 2020 study [19] investigated the phytochemicals in lemons with regard to their potential therapeutic benefits.  Researchers found that lemons had anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, and anti-cancer benefits. All of these properties combined have benefits for overall digestive health.  A difficult-to-eradicate yeast known as Candida albicans can cause major trouble for the digestive tract. When C. albicans invades the digestive tract, it can cause oral thrush (a burning sensation in the gut after eating certain foods), recurring genital and urinary tract infections, even ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease.  Candida overgrowth is especially rampant among immunocompromised people, the elderly, those on broad-spectrum antibiotics, overstressed people with a high intake of sugar, carbs, and alcohol, and individuals hospitalized in intensive care units.  A 2019 study [20] found that lemon oil (among other essential oils tested) had strong anti-Candida activity against several lines of Candida species.  4. Fennel Essential Oil  Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) has a long history of use as a medicine and especially for digestive difficulties. Studies [14] indicate fennel is:  • antioxidative  • anti-inflammatory  • anti-ulcer  • anti-viral  • anti-spasmodic  • antimicrobial  • DNA protective  • has blood-sugar-lowering and cholesterol-lowering properties  A 2018 animal study [22] found that administering fennel oil significantly improved antioxidative status, reduced inflammation, and reduced blood sugar levels in rats with dyslipidemia (an abnormal amount of fats such as triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood).  A 2011 study [23] investigated the effects of the phytochemicals in fennel on rats with gastric ulcers. Researchers found fennel to have significant anti-ulcer activity and may help to prevent ulcers.  3 Ways to Use Digest Essential Oil Blend for Digestive Problems  #1. Apply a few drops of Organixx Digest blend across the abdomen and/or low back, massaging it in gently but thoroughly. To improve absorption, place a warm compress across the belly and/or low back after applying Digest. Dilute first with an organic carrier oil such as almond, coconut, hemp, or avocado oil. Try using 3-5 drops of Digest per teaspoon of carrier oil.  #2. Place a couple drops of Digest blend into your palms, rub them together, and tent hands over your nose and mouth, being cautious to avoid eyes. Breathe the oils in deeply for a few moments, holding the essential oil vapor in your lungs for 5-10 seconds (or for as long as you can). This helps get the essential oils into your lungs and bloodstream and working quickly to relieve digestive difficulties.  #3. If you are suffering from nausea or motion sickness, using Digest blend on an acupressure point known as “Heavenly Appearance” (aka SI 17) can be quite beneficial. To locate this acupressure point, place a fingertip on the outside of the face, just below the earlobe in the indentation between the earlobe and the upper tip of the jawbone (on both sides of the face). Place a drop or two of Digest on your fingertips and gently massage this point. It can be tender, so go gently.  Considerations When Using Essential Oils for Digestive Problems  While the four essential oils in Organixx Digest Blend are all derived from plants that are also foods/spices, essential oils are highly concentrated and should only be ingested under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider. For any persistent pain or digestive difficulties, be sure to consult your doctor.  Essential oils should not be used as replacements for medicine but to support overall health.  Never apply essential oils anywhere near eyes, the inside of the ears, or to other sensitive regions of the body. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and children should always seek their doctor’s advice prior to using essential oils.  Be aware that essential oil products vary greatly between makers in purity, strength, and quality. Only purchase pure, organic essential oils from companies you trust.    RESOURCES  Organixx’s Daily Detoxx  https://shop.organixx.com/products/organic-daily-detox?gl=5ebaaf588ebf585f704f8dca      Organixx’s USDA Certified Organic Essential Oils  https://shop.organixx.com/?gl=5d88ecbd02e26bdc48380837#essential-oils  EPISODE: Enzymes 101: The Mirco Miracles You're Missing  https://organixx.com/empowering-you-organically/enzymes-101-the-mirco-miracles-missing/    EPISODE: Enzymes 201: P3E The NEW Powerful Proteolytic Enzyme  https://organixx.com/empowering-you-organically/enzymes-201-p3e-the-new-powerful-proteolytic-enzyme/    EPISODE: TeriAnn’s Health Journey  https://empoweringyouorganically.com/podcast-episode-24/    EPISODE: Top Essential Oils Do’s and Don’ts  https://organixx.com/empowering-you-organically/top-essential-oils-dos-and-donts/    16 Uses & Benefits for Ginger Essential Oil (+ Application Tips)  https://organixx.com/ginger-essential-oil-uses/    [1] Can Microbiology Affect Psychiatry? This condition is known as Reye syndrome.  I discuss the condition and the learning that arose from it. We look forward to the next steps on the way to being a consultant in child neurology.

Certain essential oils and blends can greatly benefit digestive health due to their anti-inflammatory, calming, anti-spasmodic, and cell-protective benefits. Studies [14] indicate fennel is: antioxidative • anti-inflammatory • anti-ulcer • anti-viral • anti-spasmodic • antimicrobial • DNA protective • has blood-sugar-lowering and cholesterol-lowering properties A 2018 animal study [22] found that administering fennel oil significantly improved antioxidative status, reduced inflammation, and reduced blood sugar levels in rats with dyslipidemia (an abnormal amount of fats such as triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood). Jennifer and James: Adoption of 4 Children with Special Needs

Inspiring life despite a diagnosis

Jennifer and James have a very unique family, they have 10 children! 6 of them have been adopted and 4 or those adopted have disabilities.  They each have brought love and joy into their family.   Internationally Adopted Children with Special Needs The Unexpected Jennifer and James went to Kazakhstan to adopt their daughter.  They were unaware at the time that she has autism and other medical issues as a result of living in an orphanage.  Jennifer recalled “She ended up with Reye syndrome and came home with severe liver problems and cognitive disabilities..they did some testing and told me that she had severe autism” Both Jennifer and James were crushed by the diagnosis. However, she has exceeded expectations and is on the honor roll as a freshman in high school.  “As soon as I think we’re going to hit a ceiling, she breaks through it.” Jennifer added. Adding More After struggling with miscarriages for a few years Jennifer knew it was time to adopt and add another to their family.  Some countries have restrictions on allowing typically developing children to be adopted if there are other children in the home.  This led Jennifer and James to start adopting more children with disabilities. The moment Jennifer saw Jacob, she knew he was supposed to be in their family.  “I recognized him, I knew it was him and he had Trisomy 21, Down syndrome.” Jennifer said. Children with Special Needs have Special Abilities to Love James says children with disabilities have a unique gift to love. The amount of happiness felt not only by his wife and him, but also their other kids, has dramatically increased since they’ve adopted children with disabilities. “The light and joy that they bring us is immense,” James said, “and this is true with each one of our children. They have their own unique traits and their own unique abilities. But with those things that the world would call special needs, they come as a total package, and with those special needs have come special abilities, and that’s not just lip service. Truly special abilities that have blessed our lives more than I can begin to say.” Jennifer said, these children with special needs know what’s most important in life and really understand happiness. They naturally have many talents and capabilities that do not come so easily to others. This family knows to truly love, care for, and raise children with special abilities means to be blessed to be in the presence of angels. The Impact of Having Children with Special Needs Jennifer and James both agree that their children who have special needs have had a profound impact their immediate family as well as their extended family.  Jennifer said “they all have a very special connection with all of our children, but particularly the ones with Down syndrome..my brother was the one who said to me..‘I think that their chromosome (the extra one) is the love chromosome.’  “It’s been fun to see that they’ve not only impacted up in our immediate family but in our extended family and our community.” added Jennifer Questions when Adopting Children with Special Needs Parents who want to adopt but aren’t sure, James encourages them to look deeper. Of course the cost of adoption is high—especially from a foreign country—is expensive, but adopting a child is infinitely more valuable than any material possession anyone would spend the same amount of money on. Jennifer says she knows every child has a forever family whether it’s their own or an adoptive family.

1899: The History of Aspirin

On this date in 1899, Bayer registered the name “Aspirin” as a trademark. Here are some things you might not have known about aspirin. Aspirin is also known as acetylsalicylic acid. People have been using willow and myrtle trees, both rich in salicylate for thousands of years to treat pain and fever. Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in the same class as ibuprofen and naproxen. It’s a pain reliever, fever reducer and it fights inflammation. It works by suppressing the production of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Prostaglandins are involved in the transmission of pain information, modulation of the thermostat in the brain and inflammation. Thromboxanes are responsible for the gathering of platelets that cause blood clots, which can lead to heart attacks. It proved difficult and wasteful to extract salicylic acid from plants, but in 1860 Hermann Kolbe figured out how to synthisize it. The synthesized drug had many of the positive effects of aspirin, but had negatives including weakening of the heart, gastric irritation and an intense bitter taste. In 1897, Bayer chemist Felix Hoffmann began working on how to make salicylic acid less irritating. It’s thought he began his research because his father had suffered from the side effects of sodium salicylate used to treat rheumatism. Using existing research, he discovered a better method for creating acetylsalicylic acid. Bayer would credit Hoffman as the inventor of aspirin, when in reality he refined the process of making it. Testing of what would become known as aspirin was delayed by company bureaucracy. It would have to wait even longer because Bayer’s testing department was busy testing diacetylmorphine, which would be become better known as heroin. The name heroin is a reference to the quote “heroic” feelings it gave the testers. Eventually aspirin was tested and was found to have few of the side effects of its predecessors. When it came time to name the drug, there were two final options: aspirin and euspirin. Aspirin was derived from its chemical name in German: Acetylspirsäure. Euspirin had a similar origin, but included the prefix eu- meaning good, as in euphemism. Aspirin was originally sold in powder form. However, this made it difficult to prevent competitors from making confusingly similar products. So Bayer began pressing aspirin into standardized tablets. During World War I, Bayer had its American assets seized, including its name and logo. It was purchased by Sterling Products, Inc. After World War II, aspirin lost market share to new drugs like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. In the 1980s when both new drugs were available over the counter, aspirin had a small portion of the pain reliever market. It was hurt even further by the link of aspirin consumption by children to Reye’s Syndrome, a potentially fatal disease. Soon after, aspirin’s effectiveness at reducing heart attacks was brought to light and the drug regained its place as the top-selling pain reliever in the U.S. In 1994, Bayer purchased Sterling Products and regained use of its name, logo and products in the United States. Our question: What year was heroin made illegal in the United States? Today is Independence Day in Ghana. It’s unofficially Dentist’s Day, National Oreo Cookie Day, and National Frozen Food Day. It’s the birthday of illustrator Will Eisner, who was born in 1917; author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who was born in 1927; and basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, who turns 45. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1979, the top song in the U.S. was “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. The No. 1 movie was “The Deer Hunter,” while the novel “Chesapeake” by our man James Michener topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: For which book, later turned into a movie, did James Michener win the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for fiction? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. We'll have the correct answer on Friday’s episode. Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website. Puedes evitarte muchas complicaciones a ti misma y a tu bebé. Lisa McQueen - Pearl or Fecalith? Summary by: Lisa McQueen I’ve long been a fan of David Newman’s “Pseudoaxioms,” those medical proclamations handed down from generation to generation despite growing evidence that they are false. In this talk, I turn a critical eye toward common pseudoaxioms in pediatrics. Does aspirin really cause Reye syndrome? Should you routinely use atropine in preparation for neonatal intubation? Join me in an exploration of these and other pseudoaxioms. I may even debunk the notion that “children are not just little adults.”
