After trying out of the University of British Columbia golf team (and unfortunately not making it), James met legendary Canadian golf icon Jack McLaughlin who helped jumpstart his golf industry career. After university James focused on acting, theatre and managing restaurants before deciding he wanted to apply the skills and knowledge gained in these professions to the golf industry. James relied on the book "What Color Is Your Parachute?" by Richard N. Bolles https://www.parachutebook.com/ to help shape his golf career path, which led him to seek employment with one of the best industry people in Canada: Tim Tait, who is the Head Professional at The Marine Drive Golf Club. "I was attracted to the culture of golf. I was attracted to being outside and the fact that the golf industry has so many facets that make every day different." "I came to the conclusion that a lot of people are in the golf industry because they love to play golf. Not many people are in it because they want to run it like a business. I saw this as an opportunity to fill that gap." Special Guest: James Cronk - Co-Founder & President, Golf Industry Guru.

Is Your Resume Stopping You From Achieving Divinely Appointed Goals? If you don't write accomplishment-based statements on your resume to showcase the excellent work you do, someone else will. And they wll get the interview and the job!About Jennifer Fonseca, Destiny ActivatorEven after graduating from college, Jennifer Fonseca still didn't know what to do with her life, but she had a deep desire to figure out what she had been "put on this planet to do." So her mom gave her a book that changed everything. After reading, What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard N. Bolles, Jennifer began test-driving careers--as instructed by the book. Not only did this activity lead her to a fulfilling career and finding her passion in life, but it also turned into a tool she uses to help others do the same.In this interview, Jennifer shares how test-driving careers can help you weed out options that aren't right for you and open doors to opportunities you might not know exist, Once you do identify the type of job you'd like to have, you'll need a resume to help you get an interview and eventually the job.And that's where most people flounder. What is an Accomplishments-based Resume? In Jennifer's words, "When you haven't worked on your resume in a hot minute or more like a year or two, there are so many things you’ve forgotten..." That selective amnesia forces people to reflect back on their careers in a haphazard way--thinking about tasks performed or former checklists of duties. Writing your resume that way will not help you identify who you really are.Instead, Jennifer uses an approach she calls, "Who before Do," to help her clients think back on their proudest career moments in order to reveal the exceptional work they've done and experience they've gained. Doing so is not only a good career move, but is required of those who have the ability to build up the kingdom of God.She says, 'If we don't show up with a resume that really details out the strengths that God uniquely created for us to have, then we leave it for someone else who has no problem bragging on themselves. And it's not bragging." Jennifer explains that we bring glory back to our creator when we showcase how we have stewarded well the gifts and the strengths he has given us.And when we use those strengths for good, we can change culture. In this interview, Jennifer talks extensively about how to create an accomplishments-based resume by using the four following "miracle questions:"How do I do it better or differently than anyone else? When did I thrive or flourish or feel most alive in each of my roles? What are the things that you did where you lost track of time? What are you most proud of?Listen to this interview to learn more. What You'll Learn in this EpisodeThe value of test-driving careersFour miracle questions to help you remember your accomplishmentsWhy you have a mandate to figure out what your destiny isAnd how to go about activating that destiny once you know what it isMost Importantly: How Jennifer has seen the Lord’s hand in her career

F is for financial. Funding can come in two primary forms, debt or equity. Should the business take on debt, and from where? Should the entrepreneur sell a share in the company, and to whom? I is for intellectual. Every company is built around a product or service. But in a competitive market, new ideas are what make a company prosper or fail. S is for social. Does the founder have the connections to get the business off the ground? Where are the customers, who are the advisers, and from where will the money come? H is for human. Do you keep thinking that if you just reach this next goal or hit that next milestone, THEN you’ll be happy? Overachievers have a tendency to attach our self-worth to how much we accomplish, and no matter how much success we enjoy, it never seems to be enough. So, how do we learn to appreciate the journey? How do we keep our career moving forward AND connect with what brings us real joy? CJ McClanahan is a popular keynote speaker and executive coach. He launched his coaching firm in 2003, and since then, he has spent 10,000 hours in front of entrepreneurs, executives and their teams and coached them to achieve record profits and profound business growth. But no matter how much success his clients attained, CJ recognized that few seemed to enjoy the journey. This inspired him to shift his focus and support high-achievers in finding the joy in their lives—while still realizing their professional goals. To that end, CJ wrote The Overachiever’s Dilemma: How to Break the Achievement Obsession Before It Breaks You. Today, CJ joins Emerald to explain how he uncovered his calling to serve overachievers and discuss the danger in attaching our self-worth to how much we acquire. He shares his system of helping clients redefine success in terms of unique talents, meaningful relationships and a fulfilling journey. CJ also describes his purpose-focused coaching philosophy, offering insight into the value of a coach who points out what we’re missing. Listen in for CJ’s team-centered way to celebrate success and get his advice to overachievers around shifting our focus to what others need.

Repurpose Your Career | Career Pivot | Careers for the 2nd Half of Life | Career Change | Baby Boomer

Marc answers very late in life career decision questions with his trusty sidekick, Elizabeth Rabaey. You can learn about her career pivots in Episode 020. Listen in, for ideas to pivot your career very late in the second half of life!   Key Takeaways: [2:11] Elizabeth shares her story, and how Marc has helped guide her to her latest pivot, which has worked out well. Elizabeth invites listeners to listen to Episode 20, and connect with her on LinkedIn to share experiences. [3:23] Q1: I am 70 and retired when I was 52. I had a long career as a programmer and project manager. The money is starting to run out, and I need to go back to work. What do you think I should do? [3:40] A1: There are three factors. He retired about 1999 from a large technology company. He thought his retirement money would last forever, but the Dotcom bust blew that away. He also retired very young, without a plan. His skills are very stale. His network is largely retired, also. The technology space that he knew no longer exists. [5:14] Marc told him to find a problem to solve, and that started his brain going. He has entrepreneurial tendencies. Marc wanted him to find a problem he could develop into a business service or product. He has Social Security, so he’s not going to be out on the street. After 18 years being unemployed, at 70, no-one else is going to invest in him. [6:48] His most valuable skills acquired over the last 18 years have been the engineering things he has done on his property. He liked that answer, because it got him juiced. It’s never been easier to be an entrepreneur. Marc has a friend who has products manufactured in China, and has them shipped directly to Amazon Fulfillment. [9:51] Q2: I am doing informal research on analytics career paths. My company puts analytics professionals on a business management track. I understand some companies offer higher analytics professional positions. I want to continue to develop as an analyst. Do you have any ideas on a career path? [11:11] A2: IBM and other companies started doing this in the mid-90s. This gentleman is in his early 60s. Working for a government contractor. The company needs him in business development (sales) to get more contracts. They will not invest in his analytics career. They might invest in Millennials. [12:45] Marc asked him, “What do you want to be doing in five years, and what do you have to do to get there?” It could be retirement, it could be consulting, it could be getting certified to teach classes. This man is in supply chain, and that skillset will be needed in the automation world. [15:40] Marc will be doing a series of blogposts on “How will automation, AI, and robots destroy your career?” One of those will touch your career. There is a retail crash as a result of competition from Amazon and similar online companies. [17:06] Q3: I have spent the last 15-20 years as a lecturer at a public university. I feel like the future looks dim, as they continue to cut costs, move to part-time adjunct professors, and move coursework online. Where does someone like myself go? I’m very late in my career, and I think I’ll be pushed out soon. What should I do? [17:31] A: This is a composite of three conversations Marc had, all fit the same profile, 50 and above, and had the same circumstances. They had stayed at the university because of the tremendous amount freedom it offered. They took the summer off to pursue mission-driven endeavors. They enjoyed flexible office hours. [18:16] People from a college teaching environment typically do not make very good employees. Marc suggested to one to find a problem to solve, and look at stair-stepping his way to a new business (See Episode 14 with Taylor Pearson). The second case was in liberal arts. Marc steered him to UpWork and FlexJobs to do freelance while working. [19:16] The third individual was a dean at a public university. Many people in higher education receive enjoyment from the mentoring aspects of their jobs. That is not found in the corporate world. Look at Episode 3, with Joel Dobbs. Joel has a portfolio career; part of it is mentoring executives. He also teaches, and consults to companies. [20:25] The dean needs to determine what people will pay him in the private sector, and how he gets into it. He has some of the connections required, and needs to find which ones will work for him, and start working the relationships. [21:00] Marc did not tell any of these to go find a job. Elizabeth suggests embracing the change you face, and now is the time to do it. The transition will be difficult, but once you pass through it, it will be a great opportunity to do whatever you have always wanted to pursue, and still maintain control over your schedule. [21:48] Marc says the getting out of higher education or high school teaching is challenging. Plan for the long haul, and don’t expect it to happen tomorrow. Stairstep your wait out over a year or two. Do something on the side, as the Millennials do.
