This episode of the Critical Oxygen podcast explores the adaptation of mitochondria to exercise. I am joined by Dr. Robert Jacobs where we discuss topics such as the variability in measurements, challenges of wet lab work, dispelling the myth of mitochondrial biogenesis, different populations of mitochondria, hypertrophy of slow twitch fibers, the role of AI in education, and the importance of search engine optimization in research. This conversation explores the remodeling and functional changes that occur in mitochondria in response to exercise. It discusses how mitochondria adapt by adding folds (cristae) and forming super complexes to improve efficiency and electron transfer. Primary paper of discussion - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26440213/ TAKEAWAYS 1) Mitochondria adapt to fit the energetic needs of muscle cells, forming a network of reticular channels throughout the muscle. 2) There is variability in measurements such as heart rate and lactate, which should be considered when interpreting results - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36866970/ 3) Mitochondrial biogenesis is a myth, as mitochondria actually expand and build upon existing networks to meet energy demands. 4) Mitochondria remodel and undergo functional changes in response to exercise, adding folds and forming super complexes to improve efficiency and electron transfer. 5) Temperature plays a role in mitochondrial adaptations, with mitochondria potentially getting 10-15 degrees hotter than the surrounding cell. 6) Exercise intensity affects mitochondrial adaptations, with high-intensity exercise preferentially increasing mitochondrial function and low-intensity exercise promoting mitochondrial volume. “You have to change your lifestyle. Otherwise, nothing else is going to change,” explains Robert Jacobs, strength and conditioning coach and competitive strongman. As a coach and competitor, Robert has firsthand experience on the benefits of proper strength training and conditioning. Even non-athletes can benefit tremendously from basic strength training for increased muscle mass and longevity. As a big proponent of the incredible power of small changes for influencing bigger long term change, Robert prefers lifestyle changes over short term, band aid type solutions like supplements. In this episode, Robert speaks with host Meredith Oke about the benefits of circadian timed eating and exercising for overall health and wellness. Small changes like getting up and seeing the sunrise each morning can lead to huge improvements in health. The busy way modern people live is often completely out of rhythm with the natural way the human body was designed to work. People worry so much about what they are eating, that they do not realize ‘what' is only part of the picture. In many cases, when you eat actually plays a larger role on your body than what you eat. Your body is meant to follow a diurnal rhythm. When you eat dinner after dark or snack on carbs late at night, you are confusing your body's signals and reducing your ability to rest and recover during sleep. When you align your eating habits and exercise times with the natural circadian rhythm, you will gain muscle mass, lose weight, sleep better, and perform better throughout the day.  Everyone knows that eating right and exercising are essential for a healthy lifestyle. What people may not realize is that the timing of when you eat and exercise may actually play a larger role in your overall health and fitness than what you are eating or the types of exercise you are doing. If you are looking to improve your health, start with small changes. Even the littlest change in your habits can have big results. Quotes “You have to change your lifestyle. Otherwise, nothing else is going to change.” (31:33 | Robert)  “The majority of your carbohydrates should be in the afternoon because that is instant energy.” (34:49 | Robert) “A metabolically normal individual is essentially pre-diabetic after sunset.” (36:29 | Robert) “As you move through non REM and REM sleep, you are paralyzed. You're not supposed to be processing food.” (41:22 | Robert) “When you eat matters as much if not more than what you eat.” (48:12 | Robert)  “Intense difficult exercise on an empty stomach is worse for you than it is better in the long run.” (1:14:37 | Robert)   Links Connect with Robert Jacobs: Instagram: @robertcjacobs Website: www.outlawstrength.com   To find a practitioner who understand the health principles of quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org  To become a QBC member and get invites to live deep dives & access to our video library: www.quantumhealthtv.com  To take our 8 week practitioner certification in the science of quantum biology so that you can add it to your existing area of expertise: www.appliedquantumbiology.com    Follow on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @quantumhealthtv    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

In this episode, we're exploring the history of townhouses in New York City and unpacking how this housing type relates to gentrification, a hot-button issue at the intersection of race, class, and housing. We're revisiting a conversation that I had with Lea Cloud, co-founder and partner of CDR Studio Architects, where she walks us through a thoughtful, innovative Bushwick townhouse renovation. Townhouses are single-family, multi-level homes that share walls with other homes on one or both sides and feature an entrance directly to the street. They're most common in New York City neighborhoods like Harlem, Long Island City, and Park Slope, which also happen to be communities at the epicenter of gentrification.Gentrification is the process of changing the character of a neighborhood through the influx of more affluent residents. On the surface, the new neighbors boost the local economy with restaurants, businesses, and housing. But, these upgrades are typically at the cost of longtime residents. This shift sparks feelings of resentment, frustration, and anger about who gets to own what and who gets to call a place home.In our conversation, Lea Cloud and I touch on this issue through the lens of the townhouse renovation her firm designed for a client located in the southeast part of Bushwick. Lea describes how the neighborhood demographics have changed since it was first acquired by the Dutch in the 1600s and has now become a major hub for Central and South American immigrants. Lea and I also discuss the ethos behind passive homes, what it's like to work with multiple firms on a single project, and how to manipulate designs to meet the client's vision while still complying with standard code. In 2008, Bill, his wife Amy Newmark (Author, Editor-in-Chief, and Publisher), and Robert Jacobs, led a group of investors in their acquisition of Chicken Soup for the Soul from the company’s founders, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson. Canfield and Hanson, both motivational speakers, in 1993, had come up with the idea of packaging 101 inspirational stories into a single book. The Chicken Soup for the Soul book concept grew dramatically. It’s a series that now includes more than 250 titles and has generated in excess of 100 million books sold, just in the United States and Canada. When Bill and his group acquired the company, they recognized that Chicken Soup for the Soul had the potential to grow beyond the bookstore. They knew the brand had tremendous room for expansion. In 2015, for instance, the team created Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, a now public subsidiary of the flagship organization. The new division, which Bill oversees, is building online video-on-demand (VOD) networks that provide video content for all screens with Sony Pictures Entertainment, through its “Crackle Plus” joint venture. It also curates, produces and distributes long- and short-form video content that brings out the best of the human spirit and distributes online content through its wholly-owned subsidiary, A Plus, where its partnered with Ashton Kutcher, the actor and tech investor. At various levels of granularity and expansiveness, the contributors present a diverse set of approaches and findings in what the editors describe as the “exciting new field of Nuclear Humanities.” The contributions to this volume are arrayed along five “pathways” laid out by the editors in their introduction: “testimony from lived experience;” “memorialization and commemoration;” “ordinary people’s resentment, suffering, and forgiveness;” the long-term and universal effects of nuclear weapons; and the transdisciplinary exchanges that characterize Nuclear Humanities. On Episode 236, we begin by talking to Robert Jacobs, one of the founders of the United Wrestling Front. Robert talks to us about the UWF's past, present, and future. From there, we talk to a 29 year veteran of the Squared Circle, The Wild Man Beast, who tells us all about his career and his big match this weekend in a Beast vs Beast matchup against Dan "The Beast" Severn From there, we shift to talk to Dynamo Pro Wrestling standout, Jackal, who pulled off a pretty big upset in the ongoing Riot on The River Tournament. Jackal tells us about that and what we can expect from him moving forward. From there, Dynamo Pro's Luke Roberts returns to the show to tell us about all the latest with Dynamo Pro and what we can expect over the next few weeks. Big Dave then closes this Episode out by releasing some previously unreleased recordings that dealt with the go-home episodes of Raw, Smackdown Live, and 205 Live leading into Summer Slam 2017. He also covers topics such as the passing of Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, Ric Flair's health scare, and some other issues that were taking place around that time. As we are on the Road to Summer Slam '18, the time seemed right to release this first volume of Summer Slam related recordings from last year.
