Franchise ownership success is the goal of every entrepreneur looking to step into a proven business model, but getting there requires the right mindset, strategy, and execution. For many, the idea of investing in a franchise is appealing, but questions about risk, operational structure, and market competition can create hesitation. While franchising offers a built-in support system, navigating the transition from aspiring business owner to successful franchisee requires commitment to the process and a willingness to adapt. D'Wayne Tanner, Vice President of Franchise Development at BELFOR Franchise Group, has spent years guiding entrepreneurs through this transition. With a background that includes leadership roles at Taco Bell, Wendy's, Ruby Tuesday, and Focus Brands, his expertise spans multiple industries, offering a unique perspective on what separates successful franchisees from those who struggle. As a leader within BELFOR Franchise Group, which oversees 15 residential and commercial service brands, Tanner has witnessed firsthand how franchisees can thrive by aligning their strengths with a structured business model. One of the most significant challenges facing new franchise owners is the shift from independent decision-making to following a defined system. Many enter franchising after successful careers in other industries, bringing a wealth of experience but sometimes resisting the structure designed to set them up for success. According to Tanner, those who embrace the model, rather than attempting to modify it prematurely, often experience stronger financial performance and more sustainable growth. While innovation and personal expertise add value, franchising is built on consistency, and those who adhere to established processes are better positioned to maximize their investment. Building a strong team is another cornerstone of franchise ownership success. The most successful franchisees understand that a business is only as strong as the people operating it. Hiring for skill is important but hiring for cultural fit and shared values can make an even greater impact. Employees who believe in the brand's mission and take pride in their work contribute not only to day-to-day operations but also to the reputation and long-term stability of the business. Tanner emphasizes the importance of leadership in shaping company culture, fostering an environment where employees feel valued, and ensuring that customer experiences exceed expectations. Establishing a local presence is just as critical as operational execution. While national branding provides an advantage, the ability to connect with a specific community can be the difference between a business that survives and one that thrives. Tanner describes the importance of becoming a recognizable figure in the local market, attending community events, supporting charitable initiatives, and forming strategic partnerships that create goodwill and strengthen brand loyalty. Franchisees who position themselves as trusted resources within their communities often generate more word-of-mouth referrals, repeat business, and long-term customer relationships. Financial responsibility plays a key role in franchise ownership success, particularly for those new to business ownership. Understanding cash flow, reinvesting strategically, and balancing growth with sustainability are all factors that influence long-term stability. Many franchisees underestimate the financial discipline required in the early stages, assuming that revenue alone will drive success. Tanner stresses the importance of financial planning and leveraging the franchisor's support to navigate common pitfalls and optimize profitability. Beyond financial acumen and operational strategy, mindset remains one of the most critical elements of franchise success. Owning a business—whether independent or franchised—requires resilience, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Challenges will arise, but those who remain engaged, seek guidance, and commit to continuous improvement position themselves for greater success. With decades of experience in the franchise industry, Tanner has seen entrepreneurs transform their careers, build scalable businesses, and gain control over their financial futures. His expertise sheds light on what it truly takes to succeed in franchising and why those who embrace the journey fully, rather than seeking shortcuts, are the ones who ultimately build thriving businesses. AI itself isn't a goal. Bio (from website) Based in Los Angeles, Richard T Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of noted solo albums and collaborations with a dizzying list of revered artists. In 1978, he signed with RCA Records and released his debut album, Red, Hot, and Blue, produced by Jack Richardson (Bob Seger, The Guess Who). The album featured a notable group, Les Dudek, Billy Squier, Paul Shaffer, and the Becker Brothers. The album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to number four on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. A second album titled Bear includes a rendition of the Rolling Stones' classic “Ruby Tuesday,” followed by The Best of Richard T Bear and Captured Alive, a concert recorded in Hamburg, Germany. In 1984, he moved to Teldec Records, which led to the release of The Bear Truth, and the Giorgio Moroder produced album The Runner. He has appeared on numerous recordings including Crosby, Stills and Nash's “Southern Cross,” The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss' solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau's hit single “My Angel Baby,” Billy Squier's solo debut Tale of the Tape, and former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli. He would also pen the song “Love and Pain,” one of the standout tracks on Cher's blockbuster album Take Me Home. He has shared the stage with artists such as Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers, and Jeff Beck, to name a few.Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety forced him to put his musical career on hold. In 1983, T Bear gained his sobriety and focused on helping others with addiction, and became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors. The annual event led to the creation of the Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), a non-profit organization that is now part of the Recording Academy's MusiCares F Visit the Self-Care Institute at https://www.selfcareinstitute.com/ Support the Show.Visit www.creativepeacemeal.com to leave a review, fan voicemail, and more!Insta @creative_peacemeal_podcastFB @creativepeacemealpodBonfire https://www.bonfire.com/store/creative-peacemeal/Redbubble CPPodcast.redbubble.comCreative Peacemeal READING list here Donate to AhHa!Broadway here! Located in the Great Smoky Mountains in Walland, Tennessee, the 68-room Blackberry Farm is a verdant escape known for its food, wine, and Southern hospitality. The small inn was originally purchased by Samuel E. Beall III, founder of the Ruby Tuesday chain, in 1976. After adding land and more buildings, it blossomed into the exclusive property it is today. In 1998, Samuel's son and Mary Celeste's husband, Sam, took it over, transforming it into a culinary powerhouse and must-visit getaway tucked away in East Tennessee. After the unexpected passing of her husband in 2016, Mary Celeste took over as proprietor while raising her five children. She didn't shy away from the challenge. In fact, she credits the power of believing in herself for ushering the resort into its next and most exciting era yet. Thank you for listening! Amber Tacy says she doesn't have direct ties to the professional cheerleading world (other than a handful of auditions for the Brooklynettes and Jets teams), but she did work as a professional dancer in the commercial space on TV shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Films like How to Be Single and Ads including Anastasia cosmetics and Ruby Tuesdays. She has technical training in ballet, modern, and jazz from Marymount Manhattan College, where she got her degrees in "Dance Science" (exercise science for dancers) and Psychology. She found that she was a great performer, but no matter how much she worked on her technique and no matter how many classes and styles she took, she just couldn't keep up with the other dancers in NYC. When she got a part-time job working at a fitness studio in NYC, she saw the science of training come to life. She learned about lifting, recovery, and nutrition and after a few months had certifications in all those areas. More importantly, she applied her dance-science book knowledge with physical skills in the gym and FINALLY started seeing improvement in her dancing... her career... and her confidence! In 2020, like many dancers, her dance career took a pause so she quickly shifted her focus to supporting dancers in her community and thus, “Dancers Who Lift” was born. It's an online fitness and wellness community for professional and recreational performers who want to feel hotter, stronger, and book their dream jobs. Her programs have served over 2500 performers, she's personally coached 300+ performers, and her team is still actively coaching dancers globally. It's her personal mission to get a barbell in the hands of every artist so they can take up more space and shine their brightest. I think this is an amazing concept and I'm all for it. I am so glad there's someone in this space who is talking about this. Enjoy this episode with Amber and get to lifting! Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Buckle up ALBC babies, we're about to go all over the map through Hollywood, the music industry, Australia, and a couple decades of cult-hopping. In fact, it's so epic that (picture this) we are holding an invisible boombox over our heads outside your window while blaring Peter Gabriel, asking you to listen. Got the picture? Okay cool: Because we're chatting with Ione Skye and Ben Lee, married podcasters that you may know from their hilarious Weirder Together podcast. Or maybe you know him as a prolific singer-songwriter, and her from the high school of your John Hughes teen cinema dreams. Or maybe, just maybe, you were in a cult with them at some point. It's not statistically improbable because they've been in a few culty situations, from chasing Qigong, to following Gurus and slinging DoTerra essential oils. Heads up: This isn't our regular format. It's more of a Rom-Com than the stuff of True Crime, but these two are thoughtful and funny as hell on the subject of loving people through—and out of—cults. And we're always interested in hearing from people who've dabbled and ducked out before things got too fucky. Lots of cultiverse easter eggs in this one, from David Lynch to QAnon, Theranos to Sean Penn, Rick Ruben to Ruby Tuesday's–just kidding about that last one. If you're a cult nerd, this one will be mother's milk. Put on your New Year's jammies, and enjoy. NOTES Ben Lee is a musician, singer/songwriter, producer, DJ DadBod, and professional adventurer. Ione Skye is an actor, director, painter, and author. According to this story, Skye will “Say Everything” in her new memoir soon to be published. GUEST:Adam Brotman, Forum3 co-founder & co-CEO, excels in enhancing brand-customer relationships and digital marketing through innovations such as loyalty schemes & mobile technology. His creativity earned him the #2 spot on Fast Company's "100 Most Creative People" in 2012 and the CDO Club named him CDO of the Year in 2015. Adam's rich professional background includes strategic leadership roles at J.Crew, where he initiated their first loyalty program, and notably at Starbucks. As their inaugural Chief Digital Officer, he orchestrated the development of Starbucks' mobile payment, ordering, and loyalty platform. Adam's current board commitments include MOD Pizza Company and Ruby Tuesday, and he has previously served on the boards of Neiman Marcus and Brooks Running Shoe Company. THE EPISODE: Adam Brotman helped envision and launch what's currently seen as the shining example of blockchain-based customer loyalty programs - the Starbucks Odyssey experience. Ashley chats with Adam to unpack what these programs can offer, and how blockchain technology & digital assets play pivotal roles in moving away from a short-term and transactional brand strategy, to a community-building approach which encourages storytelling, participation, and fun. He explains why on-chain loyalty programs are becoming easier to roll out, shares that most brands are afraid of experimentation (providing an opportunity to those willing to learn, pivot, and grow), and offers insights on how employees can drive innovation within their organizations. Adam also gives the audience a sneak peek into his current initiative, hive3.ai - where users can compete for great prizes from some of their favourite brands.GUEST QUOTE:"Think about Web3 as a technology or a capability set that can help enhance how you innovate your customer relationship transformation." Dave Skena remembers having his first Krispy Kreme doughnut at age 13, and even back then, he knew this company wasn't like the others. In college, he thought he was going to be an economist, but through his first job at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), he realized marketing was where he really wanted to be. After going back to school, he began his new career at Kraft Foods, then went to PepsiCo for over eight years, where he led brands such as Lay's, Ruffles, SunChips, Tostitos, and Lay's Dips. He left CPG when he became Chief Marketing Officer at Ruby Tuesdays, where he helped them transition from public to private. Then moved on to his current role as Global Chief Brand Officer at Krispy Kreme. As a 20-year "performance-driven" innovator and marketer, Dave has flipped the script regarding traditional marketing in the category for an underdog brand by putting a premium on insights and creative-driven earned media strategies. In this episode, Alan and Dave discuss the uniqueness of the Krispy Kreme brand being both accessible and premium with the omnichannel hybrid model, where their brand promise of freshness is a top priority. Dave is a performance marketer, meaning his goal is to get the most out of every marketing dollar spent. Rather than focusing on the top of the funnel, he is constantly monitoring the performance of each move his team makes through A/B testing. Earned media, collaborations, and participation in culture are the top ways Krispy Kreme increases traffic and awareness. Power partnerships with big brands such as Oreo, Chips Ahoy, Herseys, and Good Humor are a win-win for all involved and compound the joy for consumers. Dave says "happiness is not a fixed pie", meaning there is plenty to go around. When Bob the Drag Queen was broke and working at a Ruby Tuesday in Georgia, a theater friend offered to buy his ticket to New York City if he promised to leave right away. The decision to take that ticket changed the entire trajectory of his life. Sam asks Bob how he went from performing in children's theater to drag brunches, where he received the most heat while filming the HBO reality series “We're Here,” and why our politics seem to be backsliding into a sinkhole.
