Månen! Magisk. Mystisk.

t took a few years, but Tom Bailey is finally reclaiming the wonderful legacy of the Thompson Twins. The excellent hit makers were everywhere in the 80s, but eventually Tom lost interest in pop music and moved on with then wife Alannah Currie to making dub and trance music under the names Babble and International Observer letting the Twins' flame die out. Thankfully, about 10 years ago he brushed off those old hits, put out a poppy solo album, and has been back in our lives since. He's now joining forced with Thomas Dolby and others on the Totally Tubular tour this summer. We get into all of it including working with Nile Rodgers and Rupert Hine, the late great Matthew Seligman, John uHughes movies, and the stories behind a bunch of songs. Noel catches up with Andres del Castillo, who was the lead singer of the Canadian band, Eight Seconds. The synthpop/progressive rock group is best known for their 1986 hit, "Kiss You (When It's Dangerous)." It reached #14 overall in the Canadian charts, #1 in Quebec, and #72 in the United States. The band toured with Wang Chung in support of their amazing debut album, Almacantar. The album was produced by Rupert Hine, who produced The Fixx, Howard Jones and Tina Turner. Record company issues delayed the release of their second album, Big Houses, by two years. When it was released in 1990, the landscape had changed and the album came and went. The band broke up soon afterwards.

It is just so HEART! The 1975, ABC, The Adventures, Associates, Kate Bush, Classix Nouveaux, Cock Robin, Dua Lipa, Finneas, Freur, Rupert Hine, The Human League, Keane, Cyndi Lauper, Luxuria, Joni Mitchell, Prefab Sprout, Feargal Sharkey, Sia

Welcome to the middle of the second British Invasion!  John Howard Jones was born in Southampton, in southern England to Welsh parents.  He grew up in Wales, moved to Canada when he was a teenager, and returned to the UK in the mid 70's where he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.  The was the oldest of four boys, all of which became musicians, and started piano at the age of 7.  Dream Into Action is Howard Jones' second studio album, and was released in this month.  It went to number 10 on the Billboard 200, and number 2 on the UK albums chart.  Rupert Hine was the producer, who also produced albums for Rush.  Howard's brother Martin Jones plays bass on this album, and he has the group Afrodiziak as backing vocals on a number of tracks.  Jones had a successful debut release in 1984 called "Human Lib," and "Dream Into Action" would be an even bigger hit.  Howard Jones has a piano and keyboards-driven sound, and his lyrics are quite positive.  Jones believes that his positivity and depth tends to create a negative perception in the media, stating that "what's 'cool' is often very shallow and transient." Jones is still putting out albums today.  He released an album called Transform in 2019, and one called Dialogue in 20222.Bruce brings this synth-heavy 80's album to the podcast. Like to Get to Know You WellThis track preceded the album by over six months.  It came out as a single in August of 1984 as the Summer Olympics were kicking off in Los Angeles, and was dedicated to "the original spirit of the Olympic Games."  It was included in a remix album called "the 12" Album" in November 1984 before being included in this studio album.Assault and BatteryThis is a deeper cut which was played on an episode of Miami Vice.  The lyrics are about the horrors of eating meat - Jones was a vegetarian at the time, and is a vegan today.  This songs reminds us of Styx and Elton John with the keyboard work.  Life In One DayThe third single from the album (or fourth, depending upon how you count "Like to Get to Know You Well") went to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics are about not rushing through life, but taking time to enjoy the place where you are.  The British vocal group Afrodiziak can be heard contributing backing vocals to this song. Things Can Only Get BetterThe first single from the album is the big hit.  It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Afrodiziak contributes backing vocals to this track as well.  It is a very deliberately positive song, encouraging the listener who is down on his luck to keep going, and to keep looking for better days ahead. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the from the television series "Moonlighting" by Al JarreauBruce Willis launched his career in this detective romance comedy that starred Willis and Cybill Shepherd. STAFF PICKS:Don't Come Around Here No More by Tom Petty & the HeartbreakersRob features a song written by Tom Petty and Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics).  This was the main hit from the sixth studio album "Southern Accents."  It is a break-up song partially inspired by a conversation Stewart overheard between Joe Walsh and Stevie Nicks.  The Alice In Wonderland-themed video is a must-see.We Are the World by U.S.A. for AfricaLynch brings us the ultimate supergroup.  This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa, and raised over $60 million.  The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and Quincey Jones produced it.  Musicians appearing in the band were a veritable "who's who" in the music world, including performers as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Steve Perry, and Ray Charles.White Lies by Jason & the Scorchers Wayne's staff pick is off the group's first full length album, "Lost and Found."  Jason & the Scorchers' high energy and country twang led them to be described as "cowpunk."  The lyrics describe a couple in a bad relationship.  "Take these chains and set me free, release me from this misery.  Now, don't you waste my time with your alibis 'cause your heart can't hide what I see in your eyes."One Night in Bangkok by Murray HeadBruce goes to the theater for his staff pick.  This song is from a concept album and musical called "Chess," written by Benny Andersson and  Bjorn Ulvaeus (formerly of ABBA).  The musical is about a Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters, one American and one Soviet.  Murray Head performs the spoken verse and Anders Glenmark sings the chorus. COMEDY TRACK:I'm Kissin' You Goodbye by Ray StevensWe finish up this week's podcast with a break-up song in a style only Ray Stevens can deliver.

Canadian prog rock band Saga released their fourth album Worlds Apart in September 1981, but it took some time to catch fire.  By March 1983 their first single was peaking on the charts.   Rupert Hine, producer for Canadian power trio Rush, also produced this album which was both a critical and commercial success.  The band consisted of Steve Negus on percussion, Jim Gilmour on lead synthesizer, Ian Crichton on guitar, Jim Crichton on bass and keyboards, and Michael Sadler on lead vocals.  Sadler and Jim Crichton were the primary songwriters for the band. This album seemed to hit a sweet spot between progressive and commercial sensibilities.  It also saw a change in the energy level out of Michael Sadler which is attributed to an interesting intervention by Rupert Hine.  It is said that Hine had Sadler climb to the rafters of the barn where the recording studio for “Worlds Apart” was located, in order to get the right emotion.  The group also toured extensively in the United States where they opened for Billy Squier and Jethro Tull, and they benefitted from airplay on their music video for "On the Loose" and "Wind Him Up"  during MTV's first year.Worlds Apart would hit number 3 on the Top Rock Albums chart, and the single "On the Loose" hit number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album would be certified Gold in 1983, and would help the band win the Juno Award in Canada for "Most Promising Group of the Year."This album takes us back to some really good days in 1983, and we hope it does the same for you.Friend of the show John Lynch joins us for this album feature. On the LooseThe first single from the album benefitted from airplay of its video on the new MTV cable channel.  The song is tight, with heavy synthesizer use, and excellent coordinated runs in the keyboards and guitar.  The song itself is about what it sounds like - cutting loose in the evening.Time's UpThis deeper cut discusses the risk of being a daydreamer and a "man of inaction."  Don't let the time pass you by, wishing your life away.  Note the use of a child's voice and telephone special effects to make the point.      The InterviewAnother quintessential 80's sound can be found on this deep track.  The singer is talking to himself through multiple personalities.  The idea is of an individual trying to piece himself together through the internal interview.  "There's one thing I must know, tell me why you can't let go?"Wind Him UpThe second single from the album is well known and energetic.  It is a portrayal of a compulsive gambler who can't break away from the casino.  It breaks into multiple sections as would be expected in a prog rock piece, but it remains accessible.  "Wind him up, he can't stop.  He's wound up tight just like the clock that's winding its second hand down."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the television series "Little House On the Prairie”This show concluded its run in March 1983.  Michael Landon directed many of the episodes as well as playing Pa Ingalls. STAFF PICKS:I Know There's Something Going On by FridaBruce's staff pick is from ABBA alumnae Anni-Frid Lyngstad, going by the name Frida.  Lyngstad recorded her solo album in February 1982 during the last year of ABBA, and wanted to lave a different sound.  The song was written by Russ Ballard of Argent, and was produced by Phil Collins, who also played drums and contributed backing vocals.Goody Two Shoes by Adam Ant"Don't drink, don't smoke?  What do you do?"  Wayne features this new wave pop hit with a distinctive swing beat.  When he came over to the States, front man Stuart Leslie Goddard shortened the name of his punk band, "Adam and the Ants" and began touring as "Adam Ant."   The song is somewhat autobiographical, as Adam Ant did not drink or do drugs.Africa by TotoOur Guest filling in for Brian this week is John Lynch. He brings us a song that has had incredible staying power.  Toto's start as session players comes through in the tightness and production value of their songs, with this classic being no exception.  You will also have to search far and wide to find lyrics like "sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti."Shock the Monkey by Peter GabrielRob's staff pick peaked at number 29 on the charts.  The song is a love song about how jealousy can release base, animal instincts.  The video flips between Gabriel in a room dressed in a business suit, and Gabriel as a shaman with his face painted.  It is a nice finish, as Saga front man Michael Sadler considered Peter Gabriel one of his vocal inspirations. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Rockit by Herbie HancockWe finish off this week's podcast with Hancock's instrumental masterpiece.  If you haven't seen this video, you're missing out.

“Precious Time" The Sheffield born Paul Carrack's voice is one of the worlds great superpowers. Carrack got his start at 19 playing keyboards in Warm Dust for a handful of albums. From there, he formed ACE who had the massive international hit "How Long." After they broke up in 1977 he played with Frankie Miller and joined Roxy Music as their keyboardist. He put out a solo album in 1980, then joined Squeeze who had a rather massive hit with “Tempted" that featured Carrack on lead vocals. Around the same time he had a band called Noise to Go with Nick Lowe. That band became Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit who not only put out two albums, they were John Hiatt's backing band for Side Two of his Riding With The King record. Carrack did session work for the Pretenders and The Smiths for their debut album then he joined Mike and the Mechanics, logged a few seismic hits with them—you know, "The Living Years" and "Silent Running." He became a member of Roger Waters' touring band, put out another solo record, had a hit with "Don't Shed A Tear"—then formed a band with Rupert Hine, rejoined Squeeze for the Some Fantastic Place record, had a song he co-wrote with Don Felder and Timothy B Schmitt of The Eagles covered by the Eagles and that track ended up being the most played song in the United States in 1995. Carrack kept up his solo career, but still had time to join Ringo Starr's All Star Band, collaborate with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and join Eric Clapton's band. Over the years he's also played with Simply Red, BB King, Elton John and the list goes on and on. There's actually a great BBCFour documentary about Paul called "The Man With The Golden Voice.” Paul's new album One On One is his 18th solo album and it's fabulous. A stirring collection that's about as soulfully precise as it gets, Carrack's voice is filled with a timeless blend of warmth and groove and this album proves that time can't touch him. He sounds as effortless and as affecting as ever. It's yet another winning entry into a pretty flawless discography. In this conversation, Carrack talks to Alex about staying creative during a pandemic, what he learned about leading his own band from watching Clapton, and why his son think he's cool for playing on The Smiths' debut. He also talks about his new album, wanting to make a country record, and how Elvis Costello had the idea for him to sing “Tempted.” www.paulcarrack.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

English music producer Rupert Hine has passed a the age of 72. You've heard his music in every edition of the Blue Continent Podcast, using beats from his song "The Lone Ranger", by his band Quantum Jump. Hine made more of a name for himself through his work producing other artists, such as RUSH (Presto & Roll The Bones), Tina Turner, The Fixx and Howard Jones: Here is his obituary in today's NY TImes: https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2020%2F06%2F15%2Farts%2Fmusic%2Frupert-hine-synth-pop-music-producer-dies-at-72.html%3Fsmid%3Dfb-share%26fbclid%3DIwAR2ezxRXhHVlxkht-naJNwu8IbKs6CcZw1wht2cjdOPHG1V1DsAuNFGjoYw&h=AT2FsOt4SfuGQmBGCc9zwXypAvcA4P1ofDcuyeh4-wV_qzpI25FCuB70GJcnOOSf7W6bud-mojXYrWoNct-f9rlCEJ5Zb7Vfv8gjn1hyOsvoaXjkygguNIx4JZwxWdG-T0pfoys&__tn__=%2CmH-R&c[0]=AT0LCcL5cOc7yV4tdsBCC9BZDJy9DaoOPaU_6CR6IwB36TLdG4dHZ6wYlHW6J5RSHvbogSQ0ll3W4dQFeh87RXczvDYWjccTHw7u2KTR0HJJWiC22qb8CMhB71KlJM2DGqf8WZfiVbgomOelcTZamw And here is music from Quantum Jump -- which I believe married Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock as well as any act that ever existed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2SuqRQ7_QQ&list=PLA3B455F8F9B60158

Due to these technical gremlins we lost the recordings of both our episode on Roll the Bones and the outstanding interview Tom and Joe did with Rupert Hine. This episode attempts to recap both of those recordings that are forever lost. The Palaver would like to send our most sincere thanks and apologies to Mr. Hine for being so gracious with his time. The insights he provided into his time with Rush (as well as topics beyond) were beyond compare. Through this somewhat brief episode, you will get the main gist of our thoughts on Roll the Bones as well as some of the stories relayed by Rupert. Episode 38 – Rush Part 13, Presto “Hitting if fresh and finding it new” - This Palaver finds Joe, Ken, Colby and Tom considering Rush’s Presto. First and foremost, the group must consider the effect of producer Rupert Hine on this record and the fact that Presto is sonically very different from other Rush albums up to this point. From there the group considers the question “How proggy is Presto” and the nature of “chameleon Rush”. There is a small sidebar conversation on the members’ three favorite Rush albums. The topic of soundtrack dissonance surfaces again. Why don’t people like the inflatable bunnies??
