A-ha, Björk, Anna Calvi, Toni Childs, Billie Eilish, Enya, Rupert Hine, Hurts, Imagine Dragons, Moi Caprice, Peter Murphy, Bill Nelson, Panic At The Disco, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Olivia Rodrigo, Emelie Sande, Simple Minds, Split Enz og Taylor Swift udtrykker "håb og ønsker" i musik.

A Breath of Fresh Air
TERRI NUNN on BERLIN's 45 year legacy, motherhood, music and regrets. A conversation with one of the female pioneers of the music industry and how she's survived it.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2023 52:00

Singer songwriter and actress TERRI DUNN is best known for being one of the creators and the front person for the 80s band BERLIN. One of the female pioneers in an industry so heavily dominated by men, Terri tells us how difficult it is to be a woman in the music industry due in part to the amount of traveling required. She says that the pandemic allowed her to spend more time with her daughter, who had become depressed and she is very grateful for the opportunity to rekindle their relationship.  Terri Dunn is a woman who has survived the music industry for 45 years and this week she shares the genesis of the band and the music itself.   Terri tells us the band grew out of a group called The Toys, formed in 1978 in Orange County, California, by John Crawford (bass guitar), Dan Van Patten (drums), Chris Ruiz-Velasco (guitar), and Ty Cobb (vocals). After a few shows, the band changed its name to Berlin, discharging Cobb as lead singer in the process. After a brief stint with Toni Childs as lead singer, Terri Nunn joined the band after answering an ad through the Musicians Contact Service in Hollywood in 1979. Despite its name, Berlin did not have any known major connections with the capital of Germany; the name was chosen to make them seem European and exotic. They were inspired by the keyboard work of Kraftwerk, Devo, Sparks and The Screamers. The band's first single, 'A Matter of Time,' was released in 1979 and the group appeared on television for the first time. Nunn left the group later that year to pursue an acting career forcing the band to replace her.. The band released the 1980 album ‘Information', without her but the band struggled to sign with a mainstream label so by later that year, Berlin had effectively broken up. Terri Nunn rejoined the band as singer in 1980 and they released a double A-sided single, 'Tell Me Why' / 'The Metro'. The single was intended as a one-off, since Crawford was by then focusing on his new band and regarded Berlin as a side project. However, the single was a success, helping to finance the EP album, Pleasure Victim. In 1984, the band released their next album, Love Life, and the single 'No More Words', whose subsequent video saw Terri Nunn and bandmates re-enact a Bonnie and Clyde-style car chase and shoot-out, became their first top-20 hit. 'Take My Breath Away' (from the movie Top Gun) became their best-selling single in 1986 and a huge international hit, but also their last big hit. The band's sound was innovative at the time, incorporating synthesisers in a way that hadn't been heard before in America. This innovation caught the attention of MTV in 1982, providing Berlin with a larger platform to showcase their music and garnering more significant attention. The success of the band was undoubtedly influenced by Terri's captivating presence in their videos, drawing in fans and solidifying Berlin's prominence in the music scene. During our conversation Terri delves into her experiences joining Berlin and how opportunity and passion intertwined. Grateful for the chance to be part of such a revolutionary musical project, Terri discusses auditioning for John Crawford under false pretences and the importance of following one's dreams to overcome challenges and explore new opportunities. Now, after more than 40 years apart, the original trio has reunited and are making music again. I wanted music so much, it scared me. - Terri Nunn For more information about Berlin and Terri Nunn head for the band's website https://www.berlinpage.com/ To contact me with feedback, comments or suggestions for other interviewees, go to my website https://abreathoffreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy this week's episode - a conversation with Terri Nunn from 80s band Berlin.

YVETTE NICOLE BROWN BIO Yvette landed her first television role - - a two-episode gig playing Toni Childs' sister "Sherri" on GIRLFRIENDS - - by chance. Casting director Robi Reed called her in to audition from a post card submission. Yvette had no credits and no agent. That stroke of serendipity at the beginning of her career, taught Yvette that you never know how God is going to move in your life and career. Booking a series regular role two months later, on the first pilot she auditioned for further proved the point. That show, ABC's THE BIG HOUSE -- which starred Kevin Hart, only lasted a few episodes; but that experience proved to be a blessing as well. Through it, Yvette learned the transient nature of the business and to always "travel light".Yvette has since appeared (and often recurred) on shows as varied as ENTOURAGE, PSYCH, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, HOT IN CLEVELAND, MELISSA & JOEY, THE OFFICE, THE SOUL MAN, THAT'S SO RAVEN, HALF & HALF, SLEEPER CELL, HOUSE, TWO AND A HALF MEN, THAT 70'S SHOW and BOSTON LEGAL - - where she got to perform "Big, Blonde & Beautiful" from Hairspray. It was a bit of a homecoming because Yvette is no stranger to singing. She was managed by Michael Bivins (of New Edition and BBD) and signed to Motown Records when she was just a teen.Younger viewers may know Yvette from her recurring role on Nickelodeon's DRAKE & JOSH, where she played movie theater manager, Helen Ophelia Dubois. Landing that role was another serendipitous experience. The role of Helen was to be a one-time role; one that Yvette auditioned for while on hiatus from THE BIG HOUSE. That one-time role turned into four years of employment and introduced Yvette and her silliness to the best group of fans in the world...kids! The cast of DRAKE & JOSH reunited in 2008 for the holiday movie, "Merry Christmas: Drake & Josh," a film that broke Nickelodeon viewership records when it was seen by over 8 million viewers the night it debuted. It has since gone on to become an annual holiday favorite.Yvette has also had a successful career in commercials. She's appeared in over 40 national spots. You may have seen her in ads for BIG LOTS, PINE SOL, CITIBANK, FIBER ONE YOGURT, DAIRY QUEEN, HAMBURGER HELPER, ARROWHEAD WATER, HOME DEPOT, COMCAST, LG and DiGIORNO'S PIZZA to name a few. Yvette was also immortalized in puppet form as "Mrs. Lewis, from downstairs" in a series of NIKE spots alongside puppet versions of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. She is also making a name for herself in the voiceover world. She can currently be heard as "Luna" on Disney's ELENA OF AVALOR, "Principal Waller" on DC's SUPERHERO GIRLS and the dual role of "Portia" and "Zenith" on Crackle's SUPERMANSION where she works alongside Bryan Cranston and Keegan Michael Key. She also voiced the character "Cookie" for three seasons as one of the HUB Network's POUND PUPPIES. Listen closely and you can also hear Yvette on WABBIT, FAMILY GUY, PUPPY DOG PALS, THE REGULAR SHOW and DOC McSTUFFINS just to name a few and recently made her feature animated debut voicing "Ladybug" in the film "Yellowbird"Most recently, Yvette has made the rounds of numerous game shows and talk shows including THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT, THE CHEW, THE VIEW, THE REAL, HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT, TO TELL THE TRUTH, CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD, PYRAMID, MATCH GAME, CELEB NAME GAME and her absolute favorite, THE TALKING DEAD.In addition to her commercial and television work--most recently as a series regular on CBS' THE ODD COUPLE, Yvette also has a burgeoning film career. She made her film debut in the romantic comedy, "Little Black Book," working alongside Brittany Murphy and Oscar winners, Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates. Her next film, Michael Bay's futuristic thriller, "The Island" put her on the set with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. Supporting roles in other films including "Dreamgirls" and "The Kid and I," - - where she first met and worked with one of her childhood heroes, Henry Winkler - - soon followed. She was in the box office hit, "Tropic Thunder" (directed by Ben Stiller) where she worked with Matthew McConaughey; as well as the family film, "Meet Dave" where she realized a childhood dream by sharing the screen with Eddie Murphy.Other film roles include the family film, "Hotel for Dogs" starring Emma Roberts and Don Cheadle, the romantic comedy, "The Ugly Truth" starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, the indie hit, "(500) Days of Summer" starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt; and the action thriller, "Repo Men" where she shared the screen with Jude Law and Oscar winner, Forest Whitaker. Most recently, those with a keen eye, could see Yvette peeking thru loads of prosthetic makeup as one of the "three fates" in the Percy Jackson sequel, "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters".Yvette also appeared in the hit BET mini-series THE NEW EDITION STORY and hosted SyFy's game show, COSPLAY MELEE, Yvette also co-starred in the recent ABC sitcom THE MAYOR and starred as Shirley Bennett for five seasons on the NBC hit comedy series COMMUNITY.Yvette currently resides in L.A.

Terri Nunn (Berlin) joins Lol and Budgie this week on Curious Creatures. Lol and Budgie discover that the journey is half the battle. The three discuss whether or not musicians have social issues, and if music is the bridge (apparently it's good for your heart). Lol, Budgie and Terri wonder if the magic of music lasts forever. Do kids listen to and draw their own inspiration from their parents' music now? Terri talks about having the opportunity to go back and reassure her younger self that it's all going to be ok. Later on Lol and Budgie get into drum machines and decide they are ok - AND they're not afraid of them! For more info about topics discussed by Lol, Budgie and Terri in this week's episode, visit us online at https://curiouscreaturespodcast.com/Socials:Website: https://curiouscreaturespodcast.comFacebook: @CuriousCreaturesOfficialTwitter: @curecreaturesInstagram: @CuriousCreaturesOfficialLol Tolhurst: Facebook: @officialloltolhurst Twitter: @LolTolhurst Instagram: @lol.tolhurst Budgie: Facebook: @budgieofficial Twitter: @TuWhit2whoo Instagram: @budgie646Berlin:Facebook: @berlinofficialbandTwitter: @realterrinunnInstagram: @berlinofficialband Curious Creatures is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. “Fretted And Moaning” The British-born Andy Summers started loading up his musical CV at the age of 16 when, inspired by seeing Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie live in London, the young guitarist set out on the road and the road welcomed him warmly. After a few years playing live in local clubs, he moved to London and helped form Zoot Money's Big Roll Band. From there, Summers joined Soft Machine and toured the U.S. for a few months, then joined the Animals for one record, 1968's Love Is. He took a break from the rock and roll lifestyle to study classical guitar fat Cal State Northridge. After graduation, he moved back to London, played with Kevin Coyne, Joan Armatrading, Neil Sedaka, and Keven Ayers. Summers joined the Police in 1977 and Summers life was, putting it mildly, never the same. The Police put out five albums, sold 80 million of them, won six Grammys, toured the world and at one point in 1983 they were arguably the biggest band on the planet. They went on hiatus in '86, came back 22 years later for a massively successful tour, then officially called it a day in August of 2008. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees remain one of the most successful bands of all time. As for Summers, he never stopped working. He's put out close to 15 solo albums, collaborated on record with with Robert Fripp, John Etheridge, Toni Childs, Carly Simon and Sting, did the soundtracks for The Wild Life and Down and Out In Beverly Hills, put out several books of photography, and published a fabulous autobiography called One Train Later. Andy's new book Fretted And Moaning is a fabulous collection of short stories where the main character, common denominator, thematic through-line, hero and villain is the guitar. Filled with the ego-driven, the confident, the unconfident, the winners, the losers, the girls, the boys, the hopes, the dreams, the disappointments, the hilarious and the tragic, Fretted and Moaning is written with the kind of narrative velocity that will make you finish it in one sitting. It's hilarious, it's hopeful, it's sad, it's comforting and it's alive with aspiration, inspiration and heart. It also showcases Summers' brilliant ear for dialect and dizzying narrative control. In this discursive and engaging chat, the legendary musician talks to Alex about his new book, and they veer effortlessly off course to chat about Kraftwerk, reggae and reading The Odyssey…. https://andysummersbook.com https://rocket88books.com/products/fretted-and-moaning-signature-edition https://www.andysummers.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com STEREO EMBERS THE PODCAST Twitter: @emberspodcast Instagram: @emberseditor

In this episode I am so honoured to speak with the one and only Toni Childs. If you don’t already know who she is, Toni is an American-Australian singer and songwriter, Emmy Winner and three-time Grammy nominated recording artist, known for her powerful voice, inspiring independent spirit and crafted storytelling, in fact speaking with her for this interview, I visualised her to be a warrior goddess. Over Toni’s incredible career she has opened for Bob Dylan and performed duets with greats such as Al Green and Peter Gabriel. She has toured the world over gaining a much-loved fan base. Aside from music, Toni is absolutely passionate about bees and bee keepers, who she calls the real ‘Rock Stars’ on the planet. Toni is an advocate to promote the survival of endangered pollinators, who not only give us honey, but are also is responsible for the essential pollination of crops including fruit, vegetables, nuts and timber tree species. Toni has embarked on a bee keeping movement to actively promote and celebrate the longevity of the pollinators and our planet for many years to come. This is her story, and this is her passion. Late in 2016, singer-songwriter, fruit-pusher and maybe witch Benn Bennett returned to the stage after a far-too-long hiatus with the enchanting 'Occasional Suburban Witch'; a cabaret collaboration Bec Matthews and Sarah Ward celebrating the women of the Western suburbs of Melbourne who Benn loved and laughed with. In fact, Benn is one of the great collaborators, having created unique, hilarious, touching and award-nominated work with previous guest (and drunk pash of the podcast) Wes Snelling (episodes #3 and #5). We sat in his sunny Western 'burbs kitchen listening to Kate Bush (it was with Benn that I took part in The Most Wuthering Day Ever last year, both dressed to the nines in 'Wuthering Heights' frocks and wigs) and talked in our everyday circular fashion about footy franks, songwriting, suburbia, working with other artists, being terrified of debuting your own songs, Prince, matryoshka dolls, 'Return to Oz', and musicians' musicians. Also my Toni Childs impression rears its head...but only when I was attempting to do an impression of Elton John...hey, swings and roundabouts! Benn also plugs about a dozen local businesses in Yarraville, Melbourne, so I'm hoping the podcast gets a sponsor out of this episode...failing that, please share/subscribe and say nice things on iTunes if you wish/can. Everything helps. See you in Oakleigh for brunch! S.L.A.P. Photograph of Benn, Bec and Sarah by Pier Carthew
