Freelance science journalist Sara Reardon joins host Sarah Crespi to talk about the advantages and ethical considerations of keeping brains intact but inactive. Next on the show, when some lizards lose their tails, they might regenerate new ones. But what happens to the old tail? Whereas a castoff lizard tail quickly decomposes, this isn't the case for the castoff tube feet of the sea cucumber, Psolus fabricii. Sara Miller Jobson, a Ph.D. student at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, describes how these “living” limbs healed after amputation and then survived for more than 3 years in just seawater. Their survival in such simple conditions, while maintaining a complex tissue with a functioning immune response, could make amputated tube feet a useful model system for studying regeneration. Finally this week, the first in our book series on science biographies. Books host Angela Saini talks with historian Anna-Luna Post about her recent book, Galileo's Fame: Science, Credibility, and Memory in the Seventeenth Century, which explores how fame shaped the scientific fortunes of Galileo Galilei. Sea Cucumbers are disappearing in parts of the ocean, and most people have no idea why that matters. These strange, soft-bodied animals might not look important, but they play a critical role in keeping marine ecosystems healthy and functioning. Ocean Ecosystems rely on sea cucumbers to recycle nutrients, clean sediments, and support the balance of life on the seafloor. When they are removed through overfishing, the consequences can ripple across entire habitats, affecting biodiversity and long-term ocean health. Overfishing Impacts are often hidden from public view, especially when they involve species people rarely think about. This episode explores why sea cucumbers are declining, what that means for the ocean, and why losing them could have bigger consequences than expected. What if you could get more food from the exact same garden space, without expanding a single bed? That's the promise of interplanting, and today on Just Grow Something I break down exactly how to do it right. Building on the "high, low, fast, slow" mantra I use in my own garden and teach in my Plan Like a Pro course, I walk you through the framework that makes interplanting work and the common mistakes that turn it into overcrowding. I cover what to consider before you ever put two plants together (mature size, water needs, nutrient timing, and allelopathy), then get practical with six beginner-friendly pairings that are low-risk and high-reward, plus advanced combinations and experiments for experienced gardeners ready to push further. I've also put together a clear list of dos and don'ts to keep on hand when you're planning your beds. In this episode: What interplanting, intercropping, and companion planting actually mean The "high, low, fast, slow" framework and how to apply it to any bed What to know about your plants before pairing them (and what can go wrong if you don't) Six beginner pairings: tomatoes + basil, lettuce + tomatoes, radishes + carrots, peas + spinach, garlic + peppers, cucumbers + lettuce Advanced ideas: trap cropping, stacked seasonal beds, the Three Sisters and beyond A full dos and don'ts list for interplanting success Let's dig in! We did not see a mostly G-Lilly centric episode coming but, to be honest, we're grateful for it. We had a very powerful scene with her and a sobriety coach before moving back to Emmy's lack of well....being a normal human. When we think about cleaning the ocean, we often imagine divers removing ghost nets or volunteers collecting plastic from the shore. But beneath the surface, nature has its own recycling systems. In this episode of our Ocean's Natural Cleaning Crew series, we turn to one of the most overlooked and most underestimated marine animals: the sea cucumber.Joining us is Prof Annie Mercier, Department of Ocean Sciences, Memorial University (Canada), who has spent decades studying these remarkable creatures and co-edited the comprehensive scientific volume The World of Sea Cucumbers. The “earthworms” of the oceanSea cucumbers play a vital but often overlooked role in marine ecosystems. Like earthworms on land, they process seabed sediments, recycle nutrients, and help keep ocean floors oxygenated. On coral reefs, they may even support coral health by reducing harmful bacteria.Despite their simple appearance, sea cucumbers are incredibly diverse, ranging from tiny species to over a meter long, and living in environments from shallow reefs to deep-sea trenches. Their biology is equally remarkable — some can regenerate organs, split in two, and live for decades, making them valuable for scientific research on aging and regeneration. However, rising global demand has led to overfishing, putting many populations at risk. Losing them doesn't just remove a species — it disrupts essential ecological processes that keep marine ecosystems balanced.Sea cucumbers may not be iconic ocean animals, but they are quiet engineers of resilience — and far more important than we often realize.

Along the way, we examine controversial and often difficult topics, including Joseph Smith's relationship with William Law and his wife, accusations of coercion tied to plural marriage, and an alleged physical altercation involving Watler Bagby. This episode traces how tensions –both inside and outside the church –escalaated rapidly, setting the stage for the final chapter of Joseph Smith's life.If you'd like to help keep this project going, please consider donating to support this series here. This week, The Munchie Boys tackle a Finisode preoccupied with unpacking Fin's history while an undercover with Narcotics, more than a decade after the fact. Rollins gets improbably shot, which leads to an unhealthy dose of police brutallity and metaphorical prison rape threats, but that's not nearly as shocking as some truly disturbing home-decor-driven revelations upon meeting a seemingly normal family with a secret left unspoken.Alexandra Eames also pops up in this episode, which means there's a little bit of Criminal Intent's history to deal with, and there are a ton of guest stars with SUPER WEIRD backgrounds which lead us to speaking about whether bands could have been around to have songs on the Iron Eagles II soundtrack, bathing beauty contests, Carmelo Anthony's very public and extremely inconsiderate birthday present to his wife, and another truly wild IMDb self-penned biography.
