Lee is back with the second part of his look at the soundtracks and scores of the sex comedy genre, focusing on the more lurid side of things. This time everything has gotten far bigger and far hornier as he moves into the 1980s. Much like with slasher films, and other assorted cinematic junk food, the sex comedy genre exploded in North America during this decade, getting far raunchier and problematic that it had previously been. Because of the exponentially larger amount of music to put on the playlist, Lee put out a poll to the listeners asking them if they wanted this split into two parts or if they wanted a super-sized summer blow-out. Apparently the listeners are all size queens, so enjoy this 3hr episode! --Pinball Summer & Voyeur's Motel from "Pinball Summer" (1980) --Jay Boivin & Germain Gauthier --I Don't Need To Love You & Try Not To Break My Heart from "The Beach Girls" (1982) --Linda Stevens-Foote --Better Luck Next Time from "The Last American Virgin" (1982) --Oingo Boingo --Shake it Up from "The Last American Virgin" (1982) --The Cars --Teen Angel Eyes from "The Last American Virgin" (1982) --Tommy Tutone --Girls Like Me from "Valley Girl" (1983) --Bonnie Hayes --Marina Men from "Valley Girl" (1983) --The Valley Girls --Pocket Pool from "Valley Girl" (1983) --Killer Pussy --Angst in My Pants from "Valley Girl" (1983) --Sparks --Shake that Thing & This Heart's On Fire from "Screwballs" (1983) --Johnny Dee Fury --Joysticks from "Joysticks" (1983) --Legion --My Tutor from "My Tutor" (1983) --Webster Lewis --Sleepover from "The First Turn-On!" Akiva Schaffer prefers to stay behind the scenes. But that doesn't mean he's any less funny than his Lonely Island bandmates Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. The three middle school best friends started shooting videos right out of college before landing a plush gig making digital shorts for ‘Saturday Night Live,' including hits like “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” “Jizz in My Pants” and many others. In this episode, Schaffer talks about their unusual path to SNL and how directing outrageous movies like ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' led him to take on a meta ‘Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers' reboot for Disney+ starring Samberg and John Mulaney. He also explains why he might be single handedly responsible for Netflix deciding to pull the trigger on ‘I Think You Should Leave' with Tim Robinson. Happy Halloween! As far as Cort is concerned, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Not that she doesn't watch horror films all… year… long! For Halloween this year, our assignment was “Wes Craven's New Nightmare,” “Scream,” and “The Witches of Eastwick” (all on HBO Max). (Can you tell that HBO Max is our favorite?!) For extra credit we watched “The Fog” (AMZ Prime—the original, not that bullshit remake), “Firestarter” (HBO Max), “Gothika” (HBO Max), “Hellraiser” (tubi and Pluto), and “Halloween Kills” (theater and Peacock). For a truly meta experience, you can't beat “Wes Craven's New Nightmare.” Starring Heather Langenkamp as Heather Langenkamp, the premise of this movie is that Freddy Krueger has come back from the dead into the “real world”—brought back through Wes Craven's writing a new script. Yes, Wes is in the movie, as is Robert Englund, the original Freddy himself. Also back is John Saxon as John Saxon, the actor who played Lt. Thompson/Nancy's dad in the original “Nightmare on Elm Street.” (Saxon died in 2020 at age 83. #f**k2020.)Another unbeatable horror film is “Scream”—the film that laid out the horror flick rules. According to Randy (and he's totally correct), “You push the laws, and you end up dead.” Of course, Sidney (Neve Campbell) breaks the #1 rule (don't have sex), and she still ends up as “The Final Girl.” Well, Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) is there, too. But she is allowed to have sex (not that she did in the film, as far as we know) since she is a full-fledged adult.Speaking of sex, what is up with Alex (Cher), Jane (Susan Sarandon), and Sukie (Michelle Pfeiffer) being so attracted to Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson) in “The Witches of Eastwick”?! “You're not even interesting enough to make me sick,” Alex says to him… right before she sleeps with him. What??!! This one isn't a horror or a slasher. Not scary either. Gross in parts (projectile-barfing grape seeds!). Creepy (especially Daryl/Jack). It's great to see these women together—and eventually kick some devil ass.Next week our theme is “Musicians who Movie.” Watch the following movies, and listen to the music of your choice. Macy Gray, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg in “Training Day” (HBO Max); Jennifer Lopez in “Out of Sight” (Peacock); and Justin Timberlake in “Palmer” (Apple TV+). Now, one required song is Lonely Planet's “Jizz in My Pants” on YouTube. It features Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg. Fine. You can pick “Dick in a Box” if you must. But “Jizz in My Pants” is better than a “Dick in a Box.” (That's what he said.)—Follow Cort's podcast with Brad at PureFandom.comCheck out Susan's movie stats on Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/barbisu/stats/Original music by Garrett ThompsonJoin us for live tweets of our favorite shows, and Follow us on Twitter & Instagram @GeekGirlSoupContinue the conversation on facebook.com/groups/GeekGirlSoupEmail your questions and comments to GeekGirlSoup@gmail.comGeek on!

April and Jen mix it up with our favorite tunes from 1983! The year’s first eclipse is a Sagittarius Lunar Eclipse with a dash of Jupiter. Venus collides with Neptune to reveal the truth about a relationship, and Mercury unites with Venus just before turning retrograde - share words of love with important people, and prepare for visitations from the past. Also, Mars and Neptune make peace across enemy lines. Plus: concert memories, brown-outs, and moments of “oh”! Love the BSA pod? Since this show was founded by ex-disc jockeys, we love our listeners. And since one of our hosts was once a struggling musician, we know that getting a free plug on the radio for your song (or movie) can make a big difference. So, we take requests. This month, our song suggestion came from John F. and our movie idea came from Marty D. Notice that we didn’t use their last names. There may be a reason for that. You’ll just have to listen to the show. Emails are going out on Sep. 21, 2020, to donors of $5 or more with instructions on accessing our episode about the Libra Equinox. If you donated and didn’t receive the message, please check your spam folder and, if it’s not there, email April(at)bigskyastrology.com. . 07:40 – It’s Libra season! Sun enters Libra on Sep. 22, 6:31 am PDT, marking autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. . 08:56 – Much love to listeners dealing with fires on the West Coast of the United States! (And since we recorded this, our friends on the East Coast are up against some scary hurricanes, so all be well!) . 09:51 – The Libra season highlights relating. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, it heralds the season when we celebrate the harvest, our ancestors, and thanksgiving. Farmer’s Almanac reminds us that the word equinox comes from the Latin for “equal” and “night.” At the equinoxes we have roughly equal day and night hours. It’s the season that emphasizes balance – equilibrium - in relationships and all matters. . 12:25 – Next episode: Jen’s solar return!! . 12:37 – Mercury enters the rocky part of its journey through Libra this week with a square to Saturn Sep. 23 at 3:38 am PDT, and tension between collaboration and top-down authority. This aspect continues a Mercury/Saturn cycle that began on Jan. 12, 2020, and is NOT, in fact, an opening square from Mercury to Saturn… . 15:31 - … as pointed out by Encyclopedia Braun, it is a closing square! Oops! But there is much worthwhile food for thought in here, anyway, so we left it all in. Look at April, growing as a person! . 15:55 – This is the first of 3 closing squares from Mercury to Saturn. The others are on November 1 (Mercury Rx) and November 6. . 16:08 – What is the difference between an opening and closing square? One urges us to simply action, the other prescribes reflection and action that’s based on experience. Look to the discussion of First Quarter and Last Quarter lunar phases in Episode 34, The 8 Lunar Phases: Have Them With a Salad, for helpful insights. . 17:43 – Mercury is now in the shadow period (September 23) of its next retrograde period (Oct. 14-Nov. 3), and Saturn is slowing to turn direct (Sep. 29) - an intractable-sounding scenario. As always, review Ep. 12: Mercury Retrograde: Where are my Pants? . 18:21 – The current cozy relationship between the Sun and Venus prompts an accidental discussion of mutual reception. Look back to Episode 4 | The Capricorn Solstice is Frequently Sunny in Minneapolis, for a protracted discussion of this condition in which two planets are in the sign ruled by the other. . 19:37 – Mercury opposes Mars (Sep 24 3:54 pm PDT), the halfway point of a cycle that began with Mercury conjoined Mars in Virgo on June 18, July 8, and Sep. 3, 2019. How are you expressing ambition, anger, assertiveness in communication? Do you find there’s a pattern in how you’re giving voice to Mars? . 22:27 - Mercury and Mars are in a t-square with Jupiter/Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn. The missing cardinal sign? Cancer, which prefers to hold its cards close to its chest. It’s always okay to pause and process your feelings before speaking. . 24:29 – Mercury enters Scorpio (Sep. 27 12:41 am PDT) marks a shift away from diplomacy and toward deeper conversations. Mercury will retrograde in this sign (Oct. 14-Nov. 3), stationing direct on the date of the U.S. presidential election, summoning memories of election day 2000 when Mercury was also stationing direct. Hanging chads, anyone? . 25:31 – In Episode 12, Mercury Retrograde: Where are My Pants?, we discussed Mercury being retrograde in water signs this year. Mercury in Scorpio has little patience for small talk – it wants real talk. While Mercury is in the sleuthing sign (through Dec. 1), dig deep. 28:21 – ** MOONWATCH ** Mercury in Scorpio brings a Dark Shadows feel to our introduction of the First Quarter Moon at 1.29 Capricorn (Sep. 23 at 6:55 pm PDT). Time to take action on something conceived at the Dec 25/26, 2019 Solar Eclipse. (See Episode 5, Unboxing Eclipses.) The Sabian symbols, “Three stained-glass windows, one damaged by bombardment”, and “The light of the 6th race transmuted to the 7th”, talk about “seeing the light,” brightening situations, and changing forms. (Shout-out to Sabian symbols specialist Blain Bovee.) We previously discussed Lunar Phase Families in Episode 41: Pisces Full Moon and the Yin to Your Yang, and Episode 45: Podathon Day 4 - A Thor’s Day Last Quarter Moon. 33:00 – As always, April and Jen appreciate you! If you enjoy the show, take a moment to subscribe and give us a 5-star rating and/or write us a happy review! The Lonely Island has just released "Popstar : Never Stop Never Stopping", so The Editing Bay has decided to go back to a time before "Jizz in My Pants" and "Captain Jack Sparrow" and talk about "Hot Rod."
Wow, what is there to say about John Steakley's Armor? Strap on your favorite defense mechanisms and join J. and Collision as they try to answer this difficult question about a novel that dares to answer the less difficult question "what if Starship Troopers were incredibly stupid and repetitive?". Yes, we take on Armor, the book that should have been called A Constant Reminder of Better Books: The Book. As a read, Armor is a terrible slog that looks you square in the eye and shows you atrocities while growling "war...is heck" before bafflingly pivoting to whimsical wisecracking and brief interludes of rough sex. This read was not the smoothest ride, is what we're saying.Anyway, lots of fun this time around, as we reminisce, we rant, we rave, we riff, we just in general rue the day we read this wretched collection of strenuously brutal action scenes and quarter-baked philosophical musings. Yes, this is one of those books where, when you're struggling to say something nice, you end up saying "there was this literally one joke? that I didn't hate?". Enjoy the proceedings as we wrestle with a book that's not just mediocre ... it's very mediocre. Protective plating and safety eyewear recommended! NOTE: our first post-Patreon episode, this one features excellent new microphones! Unfortunately, due to the unforeseen obstacles of life, there was some construction going on outside, so there may be a little extra buzzing and banging in the background, over which we had zero control and for which we have all the apologies. Recommendations: Bible Adventures, Gabe Durham The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Muriel Spark Music: "Turnstile" by Hot Water Music "War Pigs" as performed by Cake "Wargasm" by L7 "Ants in My Pants" by James Brown
The Foundation Reggae Dj Vetran Dillinger and Klassic KID As a young man growing up in Kingston, Dillinger would hang around Dennis Alcapone's El Paso sound system. This exposure would eventually lead to work in 1971, as a deejay on the Prince Jackie and El Paso sound systems,[1] initially influenced by Big Youth, U Roy, and Dennis Alcapone,[1] and performing as "Dennis Alcapone Jr.". The first record producer he worked with was Lee "Scratch" Perry, who decided that Bullock should change his name to Dillinger, after gangster John Dillinger.[2] He was part of the second wave of deejay toasters who rose to prominence during the mid-1970s. In 1974, he recorded "Freshly" for Yabby You, and 1975 saw a slew of releases with a variety of producers including Augustus Pablo ("Brace a Boy"), Joseph Hoo Kim ("CB 200"), and Coxsone Dodd ("Killer Man Jaro").[1] Albums for Dodd (Ready Natty Dreadie) and Hoo Kim (CB 200 and Bionic Dread) would soon follow. His hit "Cocaine In My Brain", which relied heavily on the main tune from "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by the People's Choice was hugely popular internationally, and was a number 1 hit in the Netherlands.[3] His output dropped somewhat in the mid-1980s but he returned to recording in the early 1990s. On September 17, 2008, the Mars Volta covered this song during a concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Dillinger was known for his quick wit, humorous lyrics and vulgar content (e.g. on the track "Crabs in My Pants")."Cocaine In My Brain" was featured on the K-Jah reggae radio station K-Jah West in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In 1978, along with Leroy Smart and Delroy Wilson, Dillinger was referenced by lyricist Joe Strummer in The Clash's track,

The 28th Toadcast is all about the Fence Collective. People who read this site regularly must know them, I assume, but I’ve been intending to do this post for a while as they might be my favourite label in music at the moment. After Kenny Anderson’s last band fell apart about ten years ago or more, he started releasing his own stuff on hand made CD-Rs under the name of King Creosote and between him and his brothers and some of the other local musicians he’d grown up with in Fife, a collective started to form which has grown and grown. Now, thanks to the spotlight cast their direction by Kenny’s brother Gordon’s involvement with The Beta Band and The Aliens, the success of King Creosote and James Yorkston, and the rising of KT Tunstall (also a Fence alumnus, believe it or not) Fence Records have turned into one of the most beloved record labels in the country. And actually, I think their approach of building a community rather than just pimping product might just have the potential to make them one of the success stories of Music 2.0, although that’s another story. So this podcast is all about Fence Records and the bands I have discovered due to their hard work, and why I think they’re great. What an arse-kisser I’ve turned into.
