We all likely know that there's valuable data in our social media posts, but just how can this be used? In this episode, JMR Co-Editor Karen Winterich talks with Verena Schoenmueller and Simon Blanchard about their paper, “Who Shares Fake News? Uncovering Insights from Social Media Users' Post Histories,” co-authored with Gita Johar. What started out as a collaboration to understand the spread of misinformation led them to uncover the value of social media post histories. While user post history can indeed be useful in predicting fake news sharers, it likely holds much more insight for which this paper's multi-method approach may serve as a foundation.
A social media user, Likhona Sukume, called out musician Jub Jub for allegedly owing him money. His post has garnered thousands of other claims from other users. TshisaLIVE has obtained an exclusive recording of Jub Jub's response to the allegations. TshisaLIVE

On March 11, a spokesperson for Meta -- the parent company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp -- confirmed that the social media giant had temporarily altered its content moderation to allow some posts calling for violence against "Russian invaders." The response from the Russian authorities was harsh. Federal investigators launched a criminal case against Meta's staff and the Russian Attorney General's Office called for designating the company as an illegal "extremist organization." If the authorities go through with outlawing Meta, millions of Russians could be incriminated in "extremist activity" just for having profiles on Instagram and Facebook. What's more, the social networks' logos would be banned in Russia as "extremist symbols" (just like the swastika, for example). For answers to our questions about what this means for Meta -- and for Russia's Facebook and Instagram users -- Meduza turned to Pavel Chikov, the founder of the human rights group Agora. In this episode I don't talk about data. In fact, I talk about metadata. While many machine learning models rely on certain amounts of data eg. text, images, audio and video, it has been proved how powerful is the signal carried by metadata, that is all data that is invisible to the end user. Behind a tweet of 140 characters there are more than 140 fields of data that draw a much more detailed profile of the sender and the content she is producing... without ever considering the tweet itself.
