Read transcriptSomewhere out there is a piece of Superman history that almost nobody remembers exists. Not because it was bad. Not because it flopped. It just… vanished off the internet one day, like it got caught in a Phantom Zone projector aimed at a server farm. That's the story of The Multipath Adventures of Superman, and we're about to dig it back up. The whole thing started life as a CD project dreamed up with actual comic book writers, including Louise Simonson and Steve Englehart, before publisher Brilliant Digital Entertainment decided the format worked better as an ongoing online series. So you got Menace of Metallo on disc, and then a sprawling, branching, multi-arc saga that lived entirely on the internet, complete with a villain who time-travels just to make everyone's life harder. And then, because this is the late '90s internet we're talking about, the entire thing quietly vanished. No re-releases, no remasters, just a bunch of dead links and a handful of people insisting this was real and they didn't dream it. So yes, this episode is a little bit of a cheat. We usually stick to games you could buy off a shelf and put in a console. This is software, distributed on a CD-ROM and later piecemeal over a dial-up connection, that you had to install a special plugin just to run. But it's a piece of Superman history that's basically slipped through the cracks of the internet entirely, and that felt worth breaking the rules for. Helping me dig through the wreckage is Chris Baker from SuperHero.vg, who has spent decades working on actual superhero games at places like Marvel and LucasArts and literally wrote the book on this stuff with WRONG! Retro Games, You Messed Up Our Comic Book Heroes! If anyone can tell us whether this lost relic deserves to stay lost, it's him. So load up the B3D Projector, brace for some early-internet voice acting, and let's see how many ways Metropolis can end before lunch. Sonny immediately realizes there's money to be made and betrays them, leading to a fight with a mysterious masked woman called Ghost, who steals Hank's entire portable laboratory. Trying to get their lab back, they visit Hank's old partner Bill Foster, who explains that Ghost is actually Ava Starr, the daughter of another former colleague whose experiment went very, very wrong. Ava is now phasing in and out of existence and is constantly in pain. Her plan? Steal Janet's Quantum Realm energy to save herself. The only problem is that doing so might kill Janet. Meanwhile, Janet starts sending messages from the Quantum Realm and provides directions. She warns them they only have a couple of hours before the Quantum Realm decides to strand them for another hundred years. Things get complicated. Sonny learns where they are. The FBI arrests Hank and Hope. Ava steals the lab. It's alot but also nothing. Eventually, Scott helps everyone escape, they recover the lab, and Hank ventures into the Quantum Realm to rescue Janet. He finds her alive, looking surprisingly well for someone who's spent decades trapped in a dimension beyond space and time. What follows is a giant chase across San Francisco featuring shrinking buildings, growing cars, a whole lot of size changing. While Scott and Hope deal with Sonny and Ghost, Hank successfully brings Janet home. Rather than holding a grudge, Janet uses her Quantum powers to stabilize Ava and save her life. In the end, Scott finally completes his house arrest, Sonny gets arrested, Ava and Bill go into hiding, and everyone seems happy. But then the mid-credits scene happens. And it's no longer happy go lucky time. Scott heads back into the Quantum Realm to collect healing energy for Ava. Just as he's ready to come home, Hank, Hope, and Janet all turn to dust thanks to Thanos. Scott is left trapped in the Quantum Realm. Have you ever been exposed to radiation and walked away all the better for it? Or maybe you have a coworker who's secretly an alien from another planet… and thankfully, one of the good ones? On this week's episode, we examine the thin line between the iconic and the absurd as we rank the best—and worst—superhero origins. We talk about why, as kids, we were so obsessed with where these heroes came from—so much so that Marvel and DC built entire issues around origin stories. We debate the scientific accuracy behind how our favorite characters gained their abilities, while also exploring what truly motivates them. For instance, Batman and Spider-Man are driven by loss, while Captain America and Wonder Woman are fueled by duty and a sense of mission. Along the way, we ask a few questions: Have certain superhero origins been rebooted too many times? Do heroes like Zatanna and Ghost Rider feel less “super” because their origins are rooted in magic and the occult? Bad boy Thanos gets an infinity stone, the Power Stone. Thanos easily overwhelms the remaining Asgardians, beats up Hulk, and steals the Space Stone from Loki's Tesseract. He then kills Loki. Thanos then destroys the ship and continues his hunt. Edris Elba helps make sure that Hulk returns to earth, where he crashes through the New York Sanctum. Back as Bruce, He warns Doctor Stephen Strange and Wong that Thanos is coming.  Tony Stark joins the conversation. Before he can call Steve Rogers to get the band back together, they attack the city to claim the Time Stone from Strange. Spider-Man is pulled into the chaos, and after they captures Strange aboard his spaceship, Stark and Peter Parker secretly hitch a ride into space to rescue him while Wong remains behind to defend the Sanctum. Meanwhile, the Guardians of the Galaxy answer a distress signal and save Thor floating in space. They agree they need to work together to stop Thanos. But they're too late. Thanos already possesses the Reality Stone and uses its power to manipulate everything around them. He captures Gamora after learning she knows the location of the Soul Stone. Desperate to save her adopted sister Nebula from torture, Gamora tells him where the stone is .  When they get there, the keeper of the Soul Stone, one Red Skull, reveals the price required to obtain it: the sacrifice of someone truly loved. In one of the film's most tragic moments, Thanos throws Gamora to her death, earning the Soul Stone. Vision and Wanda are ambushed in Scotland by Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive, who attempt to rip the Mind Stone from Vision's forehead. Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon arrive just in time to save them, bringing the wounded Vision back to the Avengers Compound. Vision urges Wanda to destroy the Mind Stone and kill him if necessary to stop Thanos, but she cannot bring herself to do it. Together they execute an elaborate plan to restrain Thanos and remove the Infinity Gauntlet. For a moment, it almost works—until Nebula reveals that Gamora is dead. To save Tony's life, Doctor Strange willingly surrenders the Time Stone, despite knowing how dangerous it is. In Wakanda, the Avengers prepare for an all-out invasion from Thanos's army. Bruce Banner, unable to transform into Hulk, enters battle wearing the Hulkbuster armor. The tide finally turns when Thor arrives in spectacular fashion alongside Rocket and Groot, tearing through Thanos's army with his fresh new hammer/ax combo, Stormbreaker. Despite their efforts, Thanos himself eventually reaches Vision. Wanda heartbreakingly destroys the Mind Stone—and Vision with it—just before Thanos can claim it. But using the Time Stone, Thanos reverses time, restores Vision briefly to life, and violently tears the stone from his forehead, killing him again. With all six Infinity Stones finally united, the Infinity Gauntlet is complete. Thor attacks and buries Stormbreaker deep into Thanos's chest, but Thanos coldly tells him he “should have gone for the head.” He snaps his fingers and vanishes. Across the universe, half of all life immediately turns to dust. Bucky Barnes, Black Panther, Groot, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Drax, and Mantis all fade away. On Earth, Nick Fury manages to send a desperate signal from a mysterious pager moments before he too disappears. The survivors are left shattered and defeated. Tony Stark and Nebula are stranded on Titan. The remaining Avengers stand in stunned silence in Wakanda. David Armstrong interviewed Golden and Silver Age great, John Broome in 1998 on set at San Diego Comic Con about his entry into comic books and pulps in the 1930s, working at Quality Comics and DC Comics, knowing Otto Binder, his favorite comic book genre, his science fiction stories synergizing with the space race,  trying to gather support for creators to claim reprint rights from Jack Liebowitz, his stories of the 1950s, if comic books were a gateway to larger narrative projects, his enjoyment of films, writing a movie about Casanova, why he left comic books, and his dearest friend, Julius Schwartz. Armstrong also interviewed Pulp & Graphic Novel writer and Silver Age great, Arnold Drake in 2005 on set at San Diego Comic Con about his early forays into writing in the army during the Battle of the Bulge, submitting stories to the vintage paperback market, meeting Leslie Waller with whom he wrote what some consider the first graphic novel, It Rhymes With Lust, entering DC Comics through his friendship with Bob Kane, his opinion of Mort Weisinger, writing Showcase #1, revitalizing Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis licensed comics at DC,  discussing the threat of Stan Lee's Marvel Age with Irwin Donenfeld, creating Doom Patrol, interacting with Dick Giordano, Carmine Infantino and his favorite artist, Bruno Premiani. Interview conducted, recorded and copyrighted to David Armstrong. Remastered, edited, timestamped and postproduction by Alex Grand.Support the show
