Video-Man is back yet again in "The Education of a Superhero," but he's not the Video-Man we met twice before. That's because this episode was actually a backdoor pilot for a Video-Man TV show in which Video-Man is a superhero who joins the X-Men, who also appear at the end of this episode. That's right, the formerly villainous Video-Man is now a budding superhero, whose civilian identity is the video games-obsessed nerd Francis Byte. His origin story includes a wholly original villain named Gamesman, who is kind of a rip-off of Arcade, but we actually liked this episode anyway. Maybe because it's about video games, and... zombies, kinda? Robert Kirkman is building an expansive new superhero universe with Terminal, and at San Diego Comic-Con Jace from The Comic Source sat down in the press room with Kirkman, Andy Kubert, Arthur Adams and David Finch to talk about what makes the series different. Kirkman discusses the influence of '90s X-Men and the desire to bring that same bold, in-your-face energy back to superhero comics, while creating two opposing factions where readers may not immediately know who the heroes and villains actually are. The conversation explores Kirkman and Joe Casey's long-term plans for a story designed to dramatically evolve by issues #12, #25 and even #50, Arthur Adams returning to interior work, David Finch tackling a different visual world after Skinbreaker, and Andy Kubert balancing the energy of his classic X-Men work with everything he has learned since. Kirkman also explains why Terminal may be his most collaborative individual comic yet, with Kubert, Adams and Finch contributing character designs, influencing one another's work and being given the freedom to change pacing, layouts and even expand moments from the script when they see a better visual solution. Plus, Kirkman addresses comparisons to The Walking Dead, why he wants Terminal to become its own thing rather than "the next" anything, and why making the best comic possible will always come before thinking about potential film, television or animation adaptations. Then Kris Bowers and Michael Dean Parsons discuss two vastly different scores: BRIDGERTON and SPIDER-NOIR. Did they score Spider-Noir in black and white? Let's find out! Spooky this morning with a bunch of fog settling in. Should warm up later and be rather nice. Look for some showers & possible thunderstorms tomorrow night, however. It's Hypothetical Thursday…where we ask each other hypothetical questions. Jean went first this morning and her question for Brian was: " " Brian's question for Jean was: "If you could get $50,000 in cash for every inch of height you lose…how tall would you be?" Office Cora also joined us just after 8am to let us know what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. And we also sang "Happy Birthday" to her as she celebrated her b-day earlier this week. In the news this morning, an update on the Nolan Wells case, a recall on jalapenos, the latest on Perez Hilton, a non-profit in Wisconsin bails out a bunch of the Madison protestors, and have you seen the Jiu Jitsu nurse??? In sports, the Brewers beat the Pirates again last night, a new winner at the WSOP, a Mets rookie does the Superhero landing after his first career strikeout, Stefon Diggs is signing with the Commanders, Jalon Walker's season is over, and Aaron Donald is getting closer to making a comeback in the NFL. We talked about what's on TV & streaming today. Plus, the Queens of the Stone Age had a complaint line, Charlie Sheen is launching a podcast, Disney has already sold all the Super Bowl ads, and a new documentary about OJ Simpson's failed "Juiced" show is coming out. A guy who survived a shark attack in the Bahamas is welcomed home by his friends & neighbors, and a 64 year-old father of five just graduated nursing school after attending alongside his son! Do you know when the average person reaches PEAK happiness??? It's apparently age 47. Elsewhere in sports, LIV golf apparently has new funding, Justin Herbert & Madison Beer can't keep their hands off each other at Chargers practice, and the Akron Zips have a unique contest for their season ticket holders. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaMan who tried to kill a teenager because of a lobster diving spot, a doorbell camera that captured a 15 year-old kid in a clown costume who's accused of murder, a poster created by A.I. wins a contest at the Ohio State Fair and people are PISSED, a guy on a rollercoaster gets hit in the face with a shoe, a truck hauling a porta-potty leaks TP all over the highway, and a mom in Texas who left her kids at home to drive to her boyfriends house.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Also, Netflix has secured the streaming rights to all episodes of The Walking Dead. And there are a lot of episodes of The Walking Dead And finally, there has been a rash of cancellations in the past week. Some major (and less major) Superhero IP titles have gotten the axe. Is this a bad sign? Or just a correction? Pixelsplitters is a conversation podcast that explores the film and tv news of the week, and examines where the film industry as a whole is headed. 324. Why Does Spider-Man Keep Saving the Day for Superhero Cinema?

    Fantastical Truth

Spider-Man! Spider-Man! Does whatever other heroes can't. And these days, that means make a good movie. Other super-movies, even in the Marvel world, take on the fake responsibilities of social activism, then are forced to fight the sinister criticism of fans. Meanwhile, Spidey and his amazing friends just keep uniting people in his friendly cinematic neighborhood. How does one hero keep wielding such great power? Episode sponsors Enclave Publishing: Winter’s Dawn by Morgan L. Busse Realm Makers fundraiser for ongoing defamation lawsuit The Talismiths: The Secret Saboteur by M. L. Hodder King Justice: The Legend Begins by Evelyn M. Exley Mission update New at Lorehaven: The Shattered Ones book quest has begun. Subscribe free to get updates and join the Lorehaven Guild. 1. Superhero movies are fighting off villains. Just last week we heard of more cancelled Marvel movie projects. With some exceptions, the MCU has flopped on streaming screens. Apart from quality, fans discerned a stench of Agenda moments. Perfect-storm also struck with Jonathan Majors cast controversies. Unlike older movies, fans follow every detail, leak, and rumor. And like Spider-Man's powers, internet is our gift and is our curse. Meanwhile, DC's latest reboot can't even get off the ground. DC is cancelling and delaying projects as a buyout draws nigh. In the past, DC has proven actively hostile to particular fans. Official statements and books isolate and mock certain versions. For instance, The LEGO Movie mocked Green Lantern the hero. In another case, an official Superman book criticized Zack Snyder. In both universes, fanbases are divided, politicized, anti-heroic. It feels like they're pitting fan “denominations” against each other. As a late famous comic creator famously uttered, “ ‘Nough said.” 2. But everybody loves one friendly hero. Meanwhile, over in the Spiderverse corner of the Marvel world … Corporate heads, marketeers, and actors alike are unifying for this. Consider one recent GQ stunt with Brand New Day actors at trivia. (‘Ware language.) Actors were asked about many Spidey versions. In this universe, every story gets canonized and respected equally. This follows No Way Home's blend of previous film characters. But for DC, they've tried to purge all previous versions except one. This unifying approach helps fans love all Spider-Man versions. Whether you like Tobey, Andrew, or Tom, you can celebrate Spidey! So it's not political. Now fans can have fun doing compare/contrast. This ends up more like denominations who unify in essential faith. (And yet that only goes so far. Holland won't meet Madame Webb.) 3. The rise of self-aware yet sincere stories. This year we've seen a wonderful increase of truly good films. Three come from Amazon/MGM: Project Hail Mary, The Sheep Detectives, and even Masters of the Universe all work so well. Jenneth Leed praised Hail Mary's earnest optimism and hope. This is “metamodern,” a flavor beyond modern and postmodern. Now we've faced real-life dystopia, war, political unrest, and a divided society. More people long for the hope of modernism, but aren't so naïve to think life doesn't come with the complexities postmodernism criticized. So instead of embracing one philosophy over another, metamodernism combines the best features of both. This approach keeps the self-awareness, irony, and subversions of expectations. But these stories also value hope, sincere themes, and admirable heroes. In fact, one working definition for metamodern storytelling may be, “Delivering a sincere theme about life in a self-aware or absurd premise.” Note: this isn't the same as flippant stories that claim “optimism.” And it's a whole galaxy far from stories ashamed of their nature. Stephen has loved “metamodern” stories wherever they appear. The Tick and Galaxy Quest also skewer tropes yet stay sincere. Even the original Superman: The Movie (1978) does this so well. Do note Richard Donner's out-loud commitment to verisimilitude. So do Sam Raimi's and Marc Webb's two Spider-Man film series. And one detects much of this in Lord and Miller's Spiderverse Brand New Day will likely follow in these wall-crawling footsteps. We've had enough division over clashing canons and flippancy. Through other reboots and controversies, Spidey stays faithful! And if other Marvel and DC films do the same, they can unify fans. Com station Top question for listeners What do you love about sincere superhero stories? Next on Fantastical Truth Christian kids, do you remember all those old warnings against fantasy fiction? Some people implied that if you made up too much stuff, you'd lose track of reality. Alas. For some cases, they’re absolutely right. Too many people are abusing God's gift of imagination. They cast people they do not know as villains in a fantasy world in which they are the big moral heroes. This habit is taking over social media. And now this sin is hurting faithful creators we know. How can Christian fans respond?

This week there is no Jim. However, what we do have is discussions about how to live with just one tea spoon, SDCC trailers, Supergirl, The Odyssey, Disclosure Day, Masters of the universe and the discovery that Lynx body spray came in Marmite flavour. Then after some feedback for Colossus The Forbin Project its on to this weeks film Is it a brave new step forward for representation in Superhero movies? Or is it a tired, by the numbers, focus grouped to within an inch of its life, flow diagram of a movie with some pretty colours that aims for representation and actually falls in to parody stereotypes? Superhero comics have been parodied for as long as they’ve existed. This time Tim and Kumar look at two books by comics insiders that satirized the predominant comics of their respective eras: Scott McCloud‘s Destroy! The Loudest Comic-Book in the Universe!! (1986) distills ’80s comics to their essence: superpowered guys punching each other; and Grant Morrison & a bevy of artists poke sharp satirical sticks at the comics of The Guys who Would Be Image in Doom Force Special #1 (1992), right down to the excessive speed lines, nonsense powers, and ankles that would never support an adult human’s weight. Send us Fan MailWelcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by Alice to explore one of the most misunderstood pieces of dog training equipment there is: the muzzle. Whether you've never considered muzzle training before or you already have a dog who wears one, this episode is all about changing the conversation and showing how a muzzle can create more freedom, not less.Far too often, muzzles only come out when there's a crisis - an emergency vet visit, a bite risk, a scavenging habit, or new legal requirements. Lauren and Alice explain why waiting until you need a muzzle is one of the biggest mistakes owners can make. Instead, they explore how games-based training can build confidence long before the muzzle is ever needed, transforming it from something a dog tolerates into something they happily choose to wear. You'll also hear why muzzles aren't just for reactive dogs, but can be invaluable for cooperative care, grooming, travel, introductions, and preventing dangerous scavenging. The conversation also tackles some of the practical realities many owners face. Lauren and Alice discuss choosing a well-fitting basket muzzle that allows panting, drinking and taking treats, introducing new equipment through tiny, achievable steps, and making thoughtful adjustments to improve comfort. They also talk openly about breed-specific legislation, public perception, and why advocating for your dog with confidence is far more powerful than worrying about what other people might think.Whether your dog wears a muzzle today or you simply want to be prepared for whatever life brings, this episode will help you see muzzle training in a completely different light. It's a practical life skill that can improve safety, protect welfare, and open up opportunities for dogs to enjoy more of the world with confidence.Ready to get started? If there's one thing we know about Dracula, it's that he's supposed to be sexy. Not so much on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, where the "Bride of Dracula" episode makes the famous vampire decidedly unappealing. Firestar gets kidnapped to be his bride and is therefore out of commission for almost this entire episode, much to our chagrin. Meanwhile, Spider-Man and Iceman spend the whole episode ragging on each other and competing over Firestar in the process of trying to rescue her, which isn't that fun to watch either. We do make it fun to recap, though, and we also manage to make several references to Castlevania and Ryan's self-insert fanfiction about his vampire OC Fearix Wolfgang.
