Christian comedian Kerri Pomarolli knows what's it like to feel hopeless. After she and her comedian husband divorced, she didn't think anyone would want to hire her for Christian events again, so she holed up in her bedroom and hid under the covers, binge-watching all five seasons of Friday Night Lights, drinking coke and eating a balanced diet of M&M's and salt and vinegar potato chips. Becoming a member of the Single Moms' Club wasn't exactly on her bucket list, but God revealed a plan for her to reach a whole new group of people. That was the motivation for her to get out of bed and start working again as He provided opportunities she'd never expected. Kerri's resume includes being on the Tonight Show 29 times and named one of LA's Most Inspiring People by LA Voyage Magazine and Comedian of the Year by The Hollywood Red Letter Awards in 2022. In this episode Kerri shares her journey as a comedian and how she's making single parenting work for her and her two daughters. She also brings lots of humor as she shares her life experiences as well as practical advice for single moms. Even though divorce was never something she wanted, she's learned how God can use it for good. Diagnostics in Life Sciences is the Key to Healthcare w/ Mara Aspinall of Illumina Ventures AZ TRT S05 EP12 (227) 3-24-2024 What We Learned This Week Diagnostics is the key to healthcare, identifying medical issues and designing the right treatment for the patient Five Levels of Diagnostics – Screening, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Interacting, & Monitoring Illumina Ventures is a life sciences venture capital firm with 35 companies in their portfolio Their investment companies deal in genomics, cancer testing, telehealth, at home testing & more Future of Biotech will be impacted by both AI and Nanotech Guest: Mara G. Aspinall, Partner, Illumina Ventures https://www.illuminaventures.com/ President and CEO, Health Catalysts Group Board Member of AZ Bio - https://www.azbio.org/ Mara Aspinall is a healthcare industry leader and pioneer with a commitment to civic involvement. She is a Partner at Illumina Ventures, an independent, global healthcare venture capital firm focused on genomics and precision health investing including diagnostics and therapeutic products. Aspinall has deep roots in venture investing, having co-founded BlueStone Venture Partners in 2017. BlueStone has a strong portfolio of diagnostic, medical device, and digital health companies in the U.S. Southwest. Throughout her career, Aspinall has spearheaded initiatives to educate payers and policymakers on genomics and personalized medicine. She publishes the popular Sensitive and Specific: The Testing Newsletter and the annual Diagnostics Year in Review. This commitment to expanding knowledge inspired Aspinall to create and co-found the Biomedical Diagnostics master's degree program at Arizona State University, the only program dedicated exclusively to diagnostics, genetics, and genomics. Previously, Aspinall was President and CEO of Ventana Medical Systems, a billion-dollar division of TheRoche Group, (now Roche Tissue Diagnostics), a worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of tissue-based cancer diagnostics, where she led more than two dozen major instrument and assay launches and helped position the company as a global leader in companion diagnostics. Aspinall spent 13 years at Genzyme Corporation, where she served as President of Genzyme Genetics and Genzyme Pharmaceuticals. Aspinall transformed the business from a small, specialized player to one of the top five laboratories in the U.S. while setting the industry standard for quality testing. The business was sold to LabCorp for $1 billion in 2010. Aspinall also served as Founder and CEO of On-Q-ity, a start-up diagnostic company dedicated to circulating tumor cells. During the pandemic, Aspinall emerged as a national authority on COVID testing, serving as the principal investigator at Arizona State University on grants from The Rockefeller Foundation, creating TestingCommons.com and EvidenceCommons.com – internationally recognized interactive databases on COVID diagnostics and related research and clinical applications. Aspinall was named Arizona Biosciences Leader of the Year by the Arizona Bioindustry Association and one of “100 Most Inspiring People in Life Sciences” by PharmaVOICE magazine. Aspinall has extensive board experience. She has served on multiple public and private company boards in leadership roles over the last ten years. She is currently Chair of the Board of OraSure (OSUR) and Chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee of Castle Biosciences (CSTL). She also serves on the board of BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a BA in International Relations from Tufts University, and is certified in Cybersecurity Oversight from Carnegie Mellon/NACD. Notes: Seg 1 All of life sciences and biotech is healthcare. Diagnostics is the central organizing portion in healthcare, and consists of testing if needed. There are five (5) levels to diagnostics. Level One is Screening – where a patient may or may not be sick, check the health status, and also could be regular check ups for something pre-diagnosed. Level Two is the Diagnosis - where tests are taken and then you see the results of the test. Level Three is the Prognosis – what symptoms does the patient have, and where you need to go from here, what will happen with these symptoms. Level Four is a newer part called Interacting - This is where you can do personalized medicine and what's called theranostics or drug treatment. You combine drugs with the treatment. You have to analyze what type of drug is needed. What someone's body is like, how they metabolize drugs. What dose central levels are needed. People's reactions to drugs is not just body size or weight as suggested previously, but could be very much based on the genes. Level Five also new is called Monitoring - If disease treatment is over how do you monitor over the long term. What test do you take to confirm that there's been no return of the disease. Examples would be an MRD test which stands for a minimal residue disease. You also may be doing things like CT scans or x-ray scans in the past, but sometimes these do not detect disease properly. Some cancers could be very small and you need a blood test. People may check in through cycles of a disease treatment also. Seg 2 Regarding monitoring and Level Five using cancer as an example. People may go through 6 rounds of chemotherapy treatment. The doctor should monitor by round 3 and check is the tumor reduced or how is the chemo working. Do you want to have benchmarks to see if you're reaching the health goals and if the medicine is effective. Future treatment might be biopsy of a tumor and testing glass to see what drug may work on it. Revisiting Level Four in personalized medicine you may see in the future Chino metric analysis. Check the risk level for certain diseases so you can have a preemptive process to prevent potential predisposed diseases. This is level A. Level B would be when diagnosed with a disease, you check the tumor, mutations and genes checking both the DNA and RNA. Mara is on the board of AZ Bio (.org). The goal of AZ Bio is bringing educated people about biotech together to affect the state, the universities, and companies. Move research along with the responsibility to patients in the medical field. Mara is involved in venture capital which is critical, because it funds entrepreneurs in good companies to research and create Biotech product processes and products. There are other levels of investment, which typically start with friends and angel investing then move on to venture capital, and then private equity for really big rounds. She was the founder of Blue Stone and they invested in Southwest companies. In the fall of 2023 she became a partner at Illumina Ventures. They deal with 35 different companies. They've invested in all levels, biotech and genomics. You're looking for a VC to be specialized and knowledgeable about an industry so they can help the business grow provide it with money and add expertise. Seg 3 Mara and Illumina Ventures recently put out a report - Diagnostics Year in Review. This report covers how did the industry is doing, what stocks earn money, what IPOs there were, financials, clinical, innovation, and mergers and acquisitions. How does venture-capital work? Typically you have individual funds one through five. You raise money from investors and invest in new emerging companies. Companies may be doing research, drug development, or working other areas of life sciences. Examples of companies in their portfolio: Delphi deals in cancer, diagnosis test and early screening for cancer and detection test. Level one screen checking for lung cancer and what early symptoms there are. Biopsy can be dangerous so you need other tests. Let's Get Checked - a telehealth online company that brings testing to the patient either at home or in an urgent care or ER. This is faster and easier. Examples of test are Covid test and STD test. Serimmune human immunity research company Genome Medical a genetic counseling company, working with patients to discuss what diseases they may be predisposed to, and ways to not pass it to the Seg 4 Future of Biotech We saw with the pandemic, the rise of telemedicine with faster online diagnosis. We will also see in the future that AI changes drug development and reading tests The creation of better and faster equipment. The rise of nanotech, and early detection of diseases with blood samples - for example, at home blood draw. I've been helping both of my children prepare for college, and as the entire family has gotten caught up in the hustle of doing "all the things" to prepare for their college futures, this podcast guest came along at just the right time to remind me that they are already enough just as they are right now.Lisa Congdon is an award-winning fine artist, illustrator, and writer who is widely accomplished despite being self-taught and not achieving career momentum until she was nearly 40 years old.Based in Portland, Oregon, Lisa now makes art for clients around the globe, including Target, Amazon, Google, Warby Parker, The Library of Congress, and MoMA. Oh, and by the way, she has also authored ten (!) books.Despite her untraditional path, Lisa has achieved recognition, not just as an artist, but as a leader in the industry for her work in social justice, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and teaching. In March of 2021, she was named “One of the 50 Most Inspiring People and Companies According to Industry Creatives” published by AdWeek. In this refreshingly raw interview, she shares with us her childhood story of growing up and being told that she was a hard worker but not “gifted”, and how in adulthood with the support of a therapist, she realized that it was time to let go of that victimhood because she was the only one left who was selling herself the old story that she wasn't enough.Lisa and I talk about how to find our authentic selves through creativity, how to use our voices to speak our truth, the challenges around mental health, and how to know when to quit something that is not making you a better partner, parent, creator, or overall human being. If you've ever believed that you are not enough, this episode is for you. Tune in for wisdom on how to face your fears and insecurities around your creativity, how to stop listening to the voices telling you that you are not enough, and how to remember in your darker days that you are never alone. There is an immense amount of joy, color, and hope available to you if you are willing to get support, prioritize yourself, and face your deepest truths.Because Lisa is more than enough. And guess what – so are you.Love,MollyLearn more about Lisa Congdon and her work hereFollow Lisa on InstagramLearn more about Molly Carroll hereConnect with Molly on Instagram and Facebook

In today's episode How to Connect Farming and Hospitality to Create a Complete Wine Business – In Conversation with Jean-Charles Boisset, Elaine Chukan Brown speaks to Jean-Charles Boisset, winemaker, owner of multiple wineries, author, proponent of organic and the biodynamic farming method and so much more. Together they delve into the meaning of hospitality and Jean-Charles' devotion to showing people that wine can be a passion, a lifestyle. He accentuates the impact of intentions; his properties' organic and biodynamic farming methods, and their importance for the future of farming, wine and health in general. Both Elaine and Jean-Charles also explore the more interesting aspects of the biodynamic ideology. About Jean-Charles Boisset: Jean-Charles Boisset was born into the world of wine in the village of Vougeot, Burgundy, France. His lifelong passion for wine began as a child, growing up above the cellars and within view of the centuries-old vineyards of Château du Clos Vougeot, the epicenter and birthplace of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His parents, Jean-Claude and Claudine, founded the family winery in 1961 with an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit in one of the most traditional winegrowing regions in the world. Today, the family collection includes wineries that share more than 18 centuries of combined winemaking heritage and tradition in some of the world's most prestigious terroirs, from Burgundy to the South of France, to California's Napa Valley and Russian River Valley. Fine artist and cyclist Lisa Congdon was not prepared for the impact menopause was going to have on her body or the extent to which those changes would cause a drop in her athletic performance. Lisa has recently had the best race of her career, beating her previous time on the same course by 22 minutes, and is putting more power into her pedals than ever before. There is a bit of hesitation because I am finding that what is thought to be paranormal is actually normal. There is no such thing as para, or above the normal.I started out hunting ghosts. I wanted to know if there really is an afterlife. After many adventures in old prisons and dark, creepy places, I have learned that locations reported to be haunted usually are. We, as a species, have believed in life after life since the first human thought, so to continue as a ghost or spirit is natural, it is part of the human experience. The fact that Science doesn't recognize this is irrelevant.Having found possible Sasquatch evidence, namely trees driven into the ground upside down thought to be territory markers, while on a ghost hunt led me to investigate this creature in my native Ohio. After several years and many forays into Bigfoot territory, I have found incredible evidence which inspired this book. This creature is alive, flesh and blood, and has fantastic abilities. A mythical creature doesn't leave strange structures, foot prints, hand prints, and I don't believe a fictional non entity has ever growled at anyone. Here again, the fact that Science doesn't recognize this beast is irrelevant, I know better. The journey is not over. I have learned so much about this animal, but I have only scratched the surface. There are so many questions that remain unanswered. I can tell those who will listen that this creature exists, but they need to look for themselves. The evidence is there for all to see, but they need to know what to look for. I hope my experiences have informed and inspired those who have answered the call to seek this elusive creature. The truth is out there.

Nipun Mehta is the founder of ServiceSpace, a global community at the intersection of technology, volunteerism, and the gift economy. Most recently, ServiceSpace's pandemic response has showcased the unique beauty of its global ecosystem. Nipun has catalyzed a global social movement of community builders grounded in their localities and rooted in practices for cultivating love, nonviolence, selfless service, and compassion. The ecosystem has reached millions, attracted thousands of volunteers, and mushroomed into numerous community-based service projects as well as inspiring content portals. ServiceSpace harnesses the collective power of networks and our deeper interconnectedness to create a distributed social movement founded on small, local individual acts of kindness, generosity, and service that ignite shifts in individual and collective consciousness. Nipun was honored as an "unsung hero of compassion" by the Dalai Lama, not long before former U.S. President Obama appointed him to a council for addressing poverty and inequality in the US. Yet the core of what strikes anyone who meets him is the way his life is an attempt to bring smiles in the world and silence in his heart: "I want to live simply, love purely, and give fearlessly. That's me." In his mid-twenties, Nipun quit his job to become a "full-time volunteer". One of his most formative experiences was a walking pilgrimage across India, with his wife of six months, whose profound lessons also became the subject of his widely-read address at UPenn commencement. Over the last twenty years, he has addressed thousands of gatherings around the world, speaking next to wide-ranging leaders from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to author Elizabeth Gilbert to civil rights legend John Lewis. Germany's OOOM magazine named Nipun one of the Top 100 Most Inspiring People of 2020. See links to these ServiceSpace websites at the bottom of their website. What is the secret to billing $28,000,000 in 14 years, including $12,800,000 in personal production? If your goal is to become a top biller or billing manager, you're going to love my interview with Michael Pietrack. Michael was recommended to me on five separate occasions by previous podcast guests, so I made it my mission to get him on the show. He's the Vice President of TMAC Direct which is the executive recruiting arm of The Medical Affairs Company based in Atlanta. On top of being a consistent top producer, Michael's achievements include becoming MRI's #1 Worldwide solo recruiter, being elected into the Pinnacle Society and becoming PharmaVoice's Top 100 Most Inspiring People in Pharma. Michael generously shared his approach and best practices as well as his mindset that drives him to success. Enjoy listening! Episode Outline and Highlights [2:30] From being a baseball player/coach to becoming a recruiter. [4:15] The value of failure and other key drivers for Michael's success. [8:45] How to become a celebrity within your niche. [11:20] A very insightful discussion on branding. [14:10] Michael's best practices when creating videos as a differentiating factor. [20:05] How to effectively reach out to candidates to engage. [24:00] What are your thoughts on cold outreach? Hear Michael's winning mindset and approach. [32:00] Best practices on candidate outreach. [40:11] Candidate exclusivity - how to earn it instead of asking and other sourcing approaches. [47:07] What a typical busy desk looks like and how does Michael manage his time? [51:48] How to overcome phone fear and distraction. The Value of Failure Upon realizing that Michael had previous playing and coaching experience in baseball before transitioning to recruitment, I recalled what my friend Joel Slenning said about hiring athletes as recruiters. I have also interviewed successful recruiters and business owners who applied discipline from sports or even combat sports in their recruiting careers. I asked Michael's perspective, what is it about the athletic background that can add chances for success in recruiting? He gave his insights, “I would say the biggest commonality between all athletes is this ego drive that despite failure, you are going to succeed next time.” Michael added, “That's very important if you are going to be a resilient recruiter, you got to have that ingrained in you.” This is golden, considering that actual success is just the tip of the iceberg. What most people don't see are the number of times a recruiter or business owner must fail in order to learn and move forward. Michael's Success Factors Michael also shared differentiating factors contributing to his success. Billing $12,800,000 in 14 years is more than just hard work. As Michael stated, it is a “compounding variety of things.” He gave two primary takeaways: Being more niched - Finding a niche, sticking to it and “being a celebrity in that universe.” Branding and Marketing - hear Michael's epiphany while waiting in line at “In and Out Burger” and how it influenced his approach to recruitment. Candidate and Client Outreach Best Practices On top of what Michael shared on sticking to your niche and being consistent with branding, he also shared practical approaches that can significantly increase your chances of success. From overcoming the fear of cold outreach, how to seek out candidates and earn exclusivity, to how he manages his time to make the most out of each day. Nipun Mehta is the founder of ServiceSpace.org -- an incubator of projects that support a gift culture. In his mid-twenties, Nipun quit his job to become a "full time volunteer" and over the last 15 years, his work has reached millions, attracted more than 500 thousand members, and mushroomed into numerous projects like DailyGood, Awakin Circles, and Karma Kitchen. Among his many prestigious accolades, President Obama appointed him to serve on a council for social change, the Dalai Lama recognized him as an “Unsung Hero of Compassion”, and Germany’s OOOM magazine named him Top 100 Most Inspiring People of 2018. Nipun has addressed thousands of gatherings around the world, speaking next to wide-ranging leaders from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to author Elizabeth Gilbert to civil rights legend John Lewis. One of his most formative experiences was a walking pilgrimage across India with his wife. The profound lessons from that journey became the subject of his address at UPenn’s commencement. Nipun's mission in life is to: "Bring smiles in the world and stillness in my heart." In today’s episode, Shay Beider welcomes Nipun to share his unique story of how he went from a career in software to becoming a full-time volunteer and founder of ServiceSpace. Nipun talks about the work ServiceSpace is doing and the principles the organization follows, including their important practice of “giftivism.” Later, Nipun discusses how a more optimal word for leadership might be “laddership,” and shares his personal philosophy on achieving maximum energy flow. This episode is particularly powerful because it is a dialogue between two non-profit leaders whose organizations are focused on volunteerism. Guadalupe Hayes-Mota immigrated to the United States of America from Mexico with his family in his early teens in search of better access to medical treatment after experiencing a near death health emergency. Guadalupe was born with a bleeding disorder called Hemophilia-A, his desire to work in the pharmaceutical industry is rooted in his desire to help people who have a rare disorder get better access to medication. After 4 years of being in the U.S.A he earned his way into Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Today, he is the director of global supply chain and manufacturing at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, a biopharmaceutical company developing treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases. Although Guadalupe encountered hardships growing up he did not let those hinder his ability to do well in life, on the contrary, he used his medical condition as a motivating force to help others. He has received the following awards: 100 Most Inspiring People, PharmaVOICE Magazine, 2020,40 Under 40, Boston Business Journal, 2019, Healthcare Executive Leadership Award, Los Angeles Business Journal, 2012. About Winging it and WInning : “Winging It and Winning" is a mindset and an expression I live by. It has helped me achieve many goals that I may not have accomplished if I did not take the plunge or fall into self-doubt. According to statistics, I should have ended up being a high school dropout, in an abusive relationship, and suffer from substance abuse. Thankfully I did not experience those things, and I attribute my life success to my mindset. At a young age, I believed that I was in control of my destiny, living every day to create a life that I always dreamed of. Despite the fact that I was not always academically inclined, I applied to college to pursue my dreams of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. I learned early on with hard work, sacrifice, and consistency, anything is possible. Mistakes are inevitable in life; however, I do not accept them as setbacks instead of learning and growing opportunities. Life has its challenges, but here I am, winging it and winning. This year has taught me that life is short, and I have a moral obligation to share my experiences with those willing to listen. Thankfully I beat the odds; I want to encourage other people that they can too! https://youtu.be/oZxd47RKxhc https://www.instagram.com/wingingitandwinning/ https://wingingitandwinning.com

If you've ever been to Chicago, then you know that it is truly a great American city. It has all the details you'd hope a great city would have. Worldly museums, great restaurants, excellent entertainment - and - a political system that is so corrupt that it rivals a third-world dictatorship. MY NEWSFLASH: Chicago also has a crime problem - and not just any crime problem. We're talking a game-changing, current-day, generational-driven BIG PROBLEM. Just over the memorial holiday weekend, 70 were shot and 8 dead - bringing the total in May alone to 66 deaths, 318 shootings and almost 400 total victims, reports abc7news out of Chicago. At least 727 people had been shot in Chicago so far this year, a 73 percent rise from 422 a year earlier, according to a Tribune analysis of department data. “THE GANG SITUATION IN CHICAGO IS ABSOLUTELY OUT OF CONTROL, IT’S THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THOSE CRIMINAL GANGS WHO ARE COMMITTING THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE SHOOTINGS, AND THE MURDERS," LT. It's a small segment of the population, We have those individuals targeted. One of the things we have to do is ensure we hold those individuals accountable when they commit these crimes." “POLICING IS ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING OCCUPATIONS, NOT JUST PHYSICALLY, BUT MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND PHILOSOPHICALLY,” SAYS LT SUTTON. And then finally, where is the media coverage in all of this? ABC, CBS and NBC spent 54 times more on the death of one gorilla than they did on the violence and deaths in the city of Chicago. The death of the gorilla in the Cincinnati Zoo has basically gone viral across the nation YET the coverage on the human tragedy in Chicago is a blip on the media radar. WHY?
