King HerodA. Read verses 18–19 first without the phrase, “from the Holy Spirit.“ Then add it later.B. King HerodLustful, wicked tyrantEdomite i.e. descendent of Esau, son of Isaac. Therefore, not a Jew so hated by the Jews he ruled.Destroyed anything that threatened his throne.Did not know the word of God.II. Priests and ScribesA. They new the word, unlike Herod.B. But they did not act on it because they did not believe it.III. Wise menA. They knew the word of God from 2-3 places:The Hebrew Scriptures would have been available to wealthy men like these to read. The star in Numbers 24 connects Jesus to those scriptures. The priests and scribes shared where Jesus was to be born in their presence.God spoke to them through a dream so they wouldn't return to Herod.B. They knew the word of God AND acted on it—they believed it.They went to Jerusalem believing that the logical place to find the son of the King of the Jews. They went to Bethlehem when they learned that from the priests and scribes. They went home another way when God spoke through a dream.CONCLUSIONBottom line: Like the wise men, when we hear from God, we trust and obey God promptly and completely.Like the wise men, when we hear from God, we are wise to obey his word(s) promptly (right away) and completely. This leads us to Jesus in all his glory. This is where we want to be! This leads us to worship him, like the wise men.Transition:One of the things Jesus commanded us to do was to remember the cross through the Lord's supper.Lord's Supper, 1 Corinthians 11:17-32“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/1co.11.23-26.NIVLet me invite you to do 3 things:Invited them to accept Christ.Invited them to join a group.Invited them to give.Text me at 843-830-2464 as needed.-Pastor DarienLord's SupperExplainReadConfessGo out into the mission fieldPray.Other notesSummary: The Savior, the Wise Men and the Vision of Isaiah From this study, the following may be noted: Oppressors and oppressed are sinners and both need the grace of the new Savior. Suffering does not produce people without sin. The prophet needs courage to tell oppressed people of their sins and their need for grace. Isaiah promised special blessings for the city of Jerusalem. Arabs would arrive with gifts and shepherds would appear. A great light, along with the glory of God, would shine upon Jerusalem. The Gospel authors saw these promises fulfilled in the birth of a child. “The hopes and dreams of all the years” are shifted from Jerusalem to a child born in Bethlehem. At his birth Jewish shepherds and Gentile Arabs came together in adoration of a child in a manger.Jesus Through Middle-eastern Eyes, Kenneth BaileyMAIN COMMENTARY HELP:Exalting Jesus in Matthew by David PlattPreaching the Word: Matthew commentary by Douglas Sean OsbourneESV Global Study BibleBible in One Year by Nicky GumbelBible Knowledge CommentaryThe Outline Bible, WilmingtonGospel Transformation BibleNIV Study BibleJesus Through Middle-eastern Eyes, Kenneth Bailey
Series: The Sovereign King ArrivesTitle: “How did Jesus Christ come?”Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25; Gen 3:15(Commentary helps listed at the end)Bottom line:How did Jesus come?Personally, motivated by loveBy the Holy Spirit,Humbly as a human baby boy.INTRODUCTIONOpening story:“Douglas Osbourne (?) was having opportunity bear witness to the incarnation was sitting across the table from a group of Muslim men in the Middle East during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. They were finishing a meal late one night (they just broke in their fast), and they asked me to share with him what I believe about God.Knowing that Muslims believe Jesus was a good man, but certainly not God in the flesh (such a claim is blasphemous in Islam), I began to share about who Jesus is.I told him that when I decided to ask my wife to marry me, I did not send someone else to do it for me; I went myself. Why? Because in matters of love, one must go him/herself. That's a picture of the incarnation.” Page 27OUTLINEI. The scandal (1:18 - 19) surrounding Christ's conception.A. read verses 18–19 first without the phrase, “from the Holy Spirit.“ Then add it later. Two facts:Mary is “with child“Joseph doesn't want to stay with her“Now, if this scenario is still scandalous in our anything goes, play by your own rules culture, imagine how it would have been in there anything does not go, abide by gods rules culture”B. explain cultural contextFathers first arrange the marriageThey become “betrothed“ for a year. Married but not living together nor sleeping together. How does Joseph feel? Angry? Jealous? Humiliated? He's resolve to do what is best for both of them: divorce her quietly.A. Obey the law by exposing her sin and letting punishment occurB. Compassion/mercy equals do it quietlyC. Shows the justice and mercy of GodII. The spirits (20–21) significant role in Christ's conception. “From the Holy Spirit“ compared to Luke 1:35A. it was the work of the Holy Spirit to genesis Jesus. Not that he was born to become gods son. He was and always has been the pre-existent son of God.The Holy Spirit took the preexistent son of God informed him into a human man. (Psalm 139:13–14)III. The surrogate (22–25) referring to Jesus his surrogate, earthly father, Joseph.A. If the Holy Spirit is the shy member of the Trinity, Joseph is the shy (or quiet) member of the holy family. We have no recorded words of Joseph. Yet, his actions speak loudly of obedience rooted and 1) love, and 2) Faith.Read versus 19–25 to list all Joseph didHe obeyedA. QuicklyB. CompletelyB. Why is Joseph so important to Jesus? He functions as a competent and reliable witness to Mary's virginity. (Isaiah 7:14)“Joseph, son of David” (1:20). Joseph adopts Jesus into the house of David fulfilling prophecy. Joseph is legally and biologically from the line of David. The only one (besides Jesus) called a “son of David“ in the gospels is Joseph.Jesus becomes legal for two reasons:A. Because he married Mary, believing her and the angel.B. Because he named Jesus as his legal father. How did Joseph make Mary‘S son his?A. The first 17 verses confirm Jesus is the promised one (genealogy)B. The last eight verses confirm Jesus is truly from the light of David.CONCLUSIONBottom line:How did Jesus come?Personally, motivated by love,By the Holy Spirit,Humbly as a human baby boy. Therefore, weFear God,Walk in the Spirit,In prompt and complete obedience.Martin Luther…In the 16th century, Martin Luther said, ‘Scripture is the manger in which the Christ lies.'

Written in the Sand Podcast Episode 17 They May Take Our Lives, But They'll Never Take Our Conformity Are You One of Us? We call them catchphrases, clichés, inside jokes, slogans, battle cries, and George Orwell thought of them as sloppy language. In his essay, “Politics and the English language” he talked about how these phrases become removed from any recognizable meaning and become shortcuts for thinking. Even worse, these phrases can be retrofitted for political goals, selling unfamiliar ideas with familiar words. Some phrases become so obscure that we no longer use some of the words let alone know their definitions, but we can often recognize their intent. They become phrases that we understand without having to ponder what the actual words mean. George Orwell was not a fan. He felt that this sloppy language lead to sloppy thinking, and I agree with him up to a point. Some of those words may have meanings you are only vaguely aware of, you just kind of understand them by how they are used. One of the phrases that George Orwell listed was grist for the mill. I know what it means, material that is useful or turns a profit, but I’ve never heard the word grist outside of that phrase in my entire life. It means corn, by the way. Obviously, if you operate a mill, not having anything to grind means that you have a useless building, so any opportunity to obtain such resources must be taken advantage of. Not that many people operate mills anymore, so most of the saying is un-relatable to a modern audience. I singled out that phrase, but I could have used any of the ones tin the beginning of the episode, or any one of thousands of others to illustrate George Orwell’s sentiment. But all language, in a way, becomes cliché. You can scan down a list of random words and a certain number of them you will recognize without even really knowing how to define them. Often, words become habitual. You just know what they mean. Today, we are going to discuss a few things about these phrases but in a more generalized sense. The actual phrases don’t matter, what matters is that the environment that we are raised in, which becomes our culture, becomes something that we understand implicitly, without really thinking about it. It’s only when you try to explain it to others that you realize how much of it makes little sense. This will be the last posting of 2017. We will return in January after the holidays with some changes in format. Craig Fuller, the Executive Director for Daily Bread Ministries, and a CPA that was in public practice for 30 years (!), joined us for this episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. Transition… One of the reasons I asked Craig to join us on the show is that I always find it intriguing how accountants use the skills they gain on the job and through their education to benefit other areas of their life – and in this case a 2nd career. Craig's career started in a ‘typical' sort of fashion in that he majored in accounting and worked in a public accounting firm. However, after about 30 years in the industry, he decided to make a career change and go into full-time ministry, which launched him along the route that eventually led to his current position as Executive Director for Daily Bread Ministries in San Antonio. Being your own boss A substantial amount of this interview is dedicated to discussing how Craig started a practice in Dalhart, Texas, and ran that practice along with a partner initially for about 30 years. If you are considering ever going out on your own and either starting or purchasing a practice, this episode is yet another you should consider listening to. Craig shares quite a bit of insight into his journey during those years. 6 million pounds of food…. I didn't realize until interviewing Craig exactly how large Daily Bread Ministries had become. Currently they distribute over 6 million pounds of food to about 125 local ministries in an effort to assist those organizations with performing their missions. In addition, DBM hosts training courses in order to further serve those ministries and help them with operational decisions. If you would like further information on Daily Bread, please visit their website at www.dbmsa.org. I hope you enjoy this episode. Whether you may be considering starting your own firm, or even considering transitioning out of a typical accounting role in order to use your accounting skills elsewhere, this episode will be of great value. Have a great week! Friday night was spent driving to River Falls WI for the pre-event technical meeting for Podium Boy's first Modern Pentathlon. 50 mile drive took 1 hr 45 mins. Saturday it was the MP event itself kicking off with fencing at 8AM, swimming at 11AM, equestrian at 2PM, and the combined (shooting/running) at 3PM. Podium Boy came out as Male Youth C Champion (yeah!!) and is now going to Colorado Springs the first week of July to train with the Youth Development team at the Olympic Training Center and then compete in the national event. Podium has work ahead of head, there is a boy in New Mexico that might be a bit better than him at the moment. If you are curious, here is a link to photos from the Pentathlon event. And video:20 13 Great Prairie Pentathlon Highlights from Brian Maas on Vimeo. As for me, Saturday was a very long day including travel time. When I woke up Sunday I was toying with bagging the Gear West Du and just going back to bed. Especially when the weather radar showed a big line of red heading our way. Still, with rain pouring down I left for the event.Heading to the Start LineBecause of the rain, the event was delayed 15 minutes. I chose to run with the competitive wave, which means I got to leave with Wave 1 yet still be available for AG awards. I wanted to do this because I figured it would be very muddy (much of the run course is trail), and footing would be treacherous, especially on the second run. And it was muddy! Sorry, no GoPro videos...that would have been cool...but the battery was charging from the MP the day before. But to give you a taste, here are the flats I used. I used my backup Mizuno's as I knew my Nike LunaRacers would get destroyed. Before the raceAfter the race. Run One (2.8 miles; Garmin said 3.03)Goal: sub 6:30 paceTime: 20.20 (7:16 per mile pace)Did I mention it was muddy? And I fell turning a tight 180-degree turn on muddy grass. Insult to injury.Transition OneGoal: 1:10Time: 1:50Sort of a long stretch from the timing mat to the bike corral, so I'm not worried about being over my goal.Bike (16.6 miles)Goal: 21+ mph avgTime: 47:08 (21.1 MPH Avg)The bike wasn't that bad, as the rain stopped. What was bad was I had my first calf cramps of the year. I easily lost 60-90 seconds, maybe more, trying to shake those out. I was surprised as I had not had any this racing season. Maybe it was the slipping and sliding in the mud.Additionally, while I really like my new racing helmet, it got pretty steamy in there on climbs and the face shield did fog up a bit. But it cleared quickly. Transition TwoGoal: 1:10Time: 1:18At least the calf muscles did not cramp up while changing into the flats.Run Two (2.8 miles; Garmin said 3.03)Goal: sub 6:50 paceTime: 21:48 (7:47 per mile pace)The calf muscles were extremely tight as I started the second run. More of an old man shuffle. It took a good 1/2 mile before I can get into a normal stride. The second run felt better than the first, but after 250 people went through the course the first time, the second time was a swamp mud fest. I kept expecting to see lost shoes stuck in the mud.On the second run, before the mud flatsPost-CapThis does not bode well for Apple and possibly qualifying for Worlds. I will need to finish in the top 6 in my AG, and as of now I count at least seven people that can beat me. I'm just too slow on the run right now, which has always saved me from my slow bike splits.AwardsI chose to use my AG 3rd place result into the hat for the $500 gift card. I didn't win, bah!Next RaceMay 25 - Apple Duathlon (world duathlon regional qualifier). I'll have to finish in the top six in my age group in order to qualify for World Duathlon champion in August. In reviewing the participant list, this will be a long-shot at best.On DeckJune 1 - Dewey Kvidt Duathlon, in Grand Forks ND. I've yet to sign up, but am planning to go. I've wanted to try this event for a number of years. This would be my 7th straight racing weekend and 12th race of the young year.
