Brandon Vick reviews 'The Order' before he and Stoney Keeley dive into the vast filmography of Jude Law on this episode of The Vick's Flicks Podcast.
“I find action scenes really hard to write, I usually save them for the end. I need to get very caffeinated and then just try and get into the adrenaline of what they should feel like. With this [film] in particular, those robberies and the heist… I kind of like to really understand an environment and a landscape before I can write an action sequence. Because if I can't figure out when a car is overtaking another car or where characters are in relation to it, then it's impossible to write dialogue. I really try and map out the choreography of things and when to have those spikes of violence. I think you just feel it. You feel it on the page where hopefully you've built the tension. There needs to be some kind of release. And that's maybe a gunshot or maybe it's a line of dialogue that pulls someone in another direction. I'm pretty prescriptive in the way I write action and I write it in the way I hope it will be shot and it's not just like an overview of a scene,” says screenwriter Zach Baylin on writing action sequences in his new film, The Order. The Order stars Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult and tells the true story of an FBI agent (Law), who's determined to bring down a group of domestic terrorists in the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s. In this episode of the podcast, we talk with Zach Baylin about writing action sequences and also his film King Richard, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. He also shares this advice for writing a period film that might have parallels to today's society: “In terms of keeping things entertaining and not wanting to be preachy and didactic, I think that the approach that I took was just to try and tell the story of what happened in 1983 and ‘84 accurately and not to over relate it to today. The parallels to today are so obvious that if we were to throw in lines about things that felt like they were alluding to the present, it would totally take out both the veracity and the intention, which was, I want to tell this story correctly. And if I do, then you'll walk out of it, both having been entertained and informed,” says Baylin. The Order is in theaters now. To hear more about Baylin's writing process, listen to the podcast.

Today inHistory July 26, 2022Author:Aoran Li the STORYTELLEROn 26 July 1139, Afonso I becamea kingJuly 25 wasAfonso I's birthday, while today in 1139 was the day Afonso I became a king.I believe thatfor Afonso I, everyone should have a preliminary understanding. He was thefirst king of Portugal after independence and one of the longest-reigningrulers in Europe.Afonso I, who wasnow in his infancy, had two major problems to solve: his mother Teresa, whowanted to fight for his inheritance, and the Moors outside his domain.Although Teresa'sbehavior caused many people to be dissatisfied, due to her excessive power, thenobles thought of various ways to no avail. In the end, it was Afonso who wasclever and resourceful, because he was an adult, so he expelled his mother andher lover as a feudal lord (Afonso had not yet been king at the time). At thistime, his mother's ally Alfonso VII, King León, was still on the throne, whichwas also a big trouble. So Afonso and his cousin sent troops to fight and beatAlfonso VII's army to the ground! Alfonso VII never dared to harass Portugalagain, and later tried to reconcile with Afonso and recognize his status asking, which was exchanged for a period of stability.Internal worrieswere solved, and there was an external problem - the Moors. The Moors harassedthe Portuguese borders for a long time, which made Afonso I worried. When thesize of his army reached a certain level, Afonso I led an army to defeat theMoors. In the time that followed, Afonso I's struggles with the Moors tookplace frequently, but the Moors were clearly much more restrained than before, creating only minor frictions and never again producing a major rebellion. Now, all internaland external troubles have been solved. Afonso I then became king on July 26,1139 and proclaimed the independence of Portugal. But his position was notsecure, so he took some measures. Pope Innocent II was first recruited, and theOrder of the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller were placed in Portugal. As a result, his throne seemed to have been consolidated, but it was not until1179, when he was 70 years old, that Pope Alexander III recognized his throne.Afonso I openedup the territory of Portugal and was the founding king of Portugal, so peoplecalled himo Conquistador.
We conventionally think of time as something simple and fundamental that flows uniformly, independently from everything else, from the past to the future, measured by clocks and watches. In the course of time, the events of the universe succeed each other in an orderly way: pasts, presents, futures. The past is fixed, the future open. . . . And yet all of this has turned out to be false. Carlo Rovelli is Director of the Quantum Gravity Group of the Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT) of the Aix-Marseille University and author of 'The Order of Time', he joined Jonathan to discuss. First aired 21/7/2018

Imagine a disorderly kingdom, it wouldn't be a very successful kingdom at all would it? That which we care about, we give attention to be it: our homes, our loved ones, our circumstances, even our job - they all require a level of routine maintenance and indeed, management. With that heart comes the "Order of the Kingdom" series, as Lead Pastor Moses Anderson takes us though this timely cross examination of the the focus we need to place on the Kingdom of God and inherent study as how a growing exuberance is needed in us to take hold of what God has prepared for us within said Kingdom. Join Lead Pastor Moses Anderson for the incredible introduction to a new series entitled 'The Order of the Kingdom'. If we don't know of these things how can we know and understand the priorities of heaven nor the pursuits of heaven amongst other things; listen in, to find out more! The third episode of this Harry Potter retrospective has James and Imo noticing how 'H'Angry' and 'Horny' Potter suddenly emerge at the franchise's denouement. They get a strangely familiar feeling discussing the crisis-denying, dissent-crushing government in 'The Order of the Phoenix' (2007), debate whether Hogwarts going 'Snogwarts' was the right tone in the dark-fantasy/rom-com mash 'The Half-Blood Prince' (2009) and, in chin-stroking fashion, ruminate on the nature of evil in the Potter-verse. It's all about angst, authoritarianism and an alcoholic teacher in this penultimate instalment!

This week we have a change of tack, a complete break from the Donald and that jazz. We delve into the shady of world of Professional Boxing, with the former Boxing Manager, Gambler, Gangster, Jazz Pianist, Writer, and Fight-Fixer, Charles Farrell. Boxing is a sport that has always fascinated me. It’s much more than a mere sport - it’s a metaphor for life itself, full of light and shadow, failure and redemption. Charles has led a life of a pulp-fiction novel character, from living on the streets of Boston from the age of 12, and playing piano in the hotels and brothels of Boston, to managing former heavyweight champion of the world, Leon Spinks. Charles is also starring in a new documentary, Ditry Games, about the corruption and fixing in the world of sport, and is appearing in the new book ‘The Bittersweet Science’, a collection of essays from some of the greatest writers on boxing, which is due out early next year from the University of Chicago Press. Michael has a new book just out, called ‘The Long Depression: How it happened, why it happened, and what happens next’. This week I am delighted to welcome back Ugo Bardi to the show. Ugo is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Florence, and the man behind the Cassandras Legacy blog, where he writes about resource depletion, climate change, and renewable energy amongst other things. We discuss the recent drop in global C02 emissions and what it means for our global economic system, the hopes for a soft landing post peak-oil and coal, solar panels as our great saviour, and his thoughts on the likelihood of global demographic decline. You can find Ugo’s blog here: http://cassandralegacy.blogspot.co.uk/ The music on this episode was: 'The Order of the Pharaonic Jesters' by Sun Ra and his Arkestra 'Luce Cannon ' by White Isles
This week, I am delighted to welcome Alexander Douglas, a lecturer in philosophy at St. Andrews University, to the show, to talk about his recent book: The Philosophy Of Debt. It was great to talk to Alex about the nature of debt and money, and how all of this stuff is explicitly linked to the power relations and class structure of our society. We also got to talk about how this MMT stuff can be viewed or fits in from a Marxist point of view, a synthesis of which I think could be extremely fruitful. In this episode, we have part 2 of the Derick Varn interview, where we discuss the history and theories of Cultural Marxism in great detail. This bumper episode, also veers off into a long discussion on Black Lives Matter, how we need more than just culture wars - how’s about some class wars! Class wars where we call the shots, for a change. Speaking of all this, we start the conversation with myself and Derick talking about Accelerationism and previous guest Nick Srnicek’s new book - ‘Reinventing The Future’. This is a long one people, as it was a pretty unstructured conversation, and I was suffering from a flu at the time of recording. My powers of conversation dipped in the middle, so I let Derick do his thing, but I rally back with some counter-punches of my own, in the later rounds. You can find Derick’s blog here: https://symptomaticcommentary.wordpress.com/ You can find Derick’s and Amogh’s Podcast here: http://sympthomaticredness.libsyn.com/ The music on this episode was: 'The Order of the Pharaonic Jesters' by Sun Ra and his Arkestra 'Holy Moly' by Matthew E. This week I am delighted to welcome back Derick Varn to the show. After listening to the previous show about Cultural Marxism with Doug Lain, Derick sent me an email saying he’d like to come on the show and give his two cents. What followed was a wide ranging discussion on ideology, value theory, and the historical emergence of capitalism. We also discussed the possibility of a revolutionary movement based on a system without abstract value, Marx’s critique of the Gotha Program, and Star Trek as a Marxist Tract. And top of all that, the possible productivity of a communist state, game theory and alternative histories, and the Spanish revolution. You can find Derick’s blog here: https://symptomaticcommentary.wordpress.com/ You can find Derick’s and Amogh’s Podcast here: http://sympthomaticredness.libsyn.com/ The music on this episode was: 'The Order of the Pharaonic Jesters' by Sun Ra and his Arkestra 'If Not For Money' - The Wytches
This week I am delighted to welcome Prof. Bill Mitchell, Professor in Economics and Director of the Centre of Full Employment and Equity (CofFEE), at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Bill is also the author of the Billy Blog - one of the best places to learn about MMT on the web. He must be the most prolific economics blogger in the world today, and that’s no lie. We met up in London yesterday, to talk about Bill’s new book Eurozone Dystopia, available from the publishers Edward Elgar. We discussed why Greece should bring back the drachma, the failed negotiating position of Syriza, the chances of reforming the eurozone, and why Italy is the canary in the mine. Unfortunately the batteries for the microphone died 5 minutes before the end, so we missed some of the juicy stuff…… apologies. You can find the Professors blog here: http://bilbo.economicoutlook.net/blog/ You can buy the Professors new book here: http://www.e-elgar.com/shop/eurozone-dystopia Enjoy! The music on this weeks show was: 'The Order of the Pharaonic Jesters' by Sun Ra and his Arkestra 'I’m Leaving Now' by Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard 'Grass Roots' by Tommy McCook
Liam takes a bite sized chunk out of 'The Order: 1886' swell as 'Bloodborne'. The both of us bitch about 'GTA V' and Tom is feeling unsure about the direction the 'Alien' franchise is going in after seeing 'Chappie'.
To compose the music for 'The Order: 1886', Jason Graves removed instruments that don't carry a heavy sound. Violins and high woodwinds were thrown out, and violas and cellos doubled up. Learn more about it on this week's episode of Top Score.
