Political campaign charter aircraft, tariffs and the aerospace industry, Boeings NGAD fighter contract, the adaptive cycle engines to power it, corrosion issues on A220 jetliners, the shutdown of Heathrow, and the resilience of airports to power outages. Guest Jonathan Tasler is Vice President at Advanced Aviation Team. He manages charter aircraft for political campaigns and high-net-worth VIPs. We learn what is involved in transporting presidential and other political candidates, and Jonathan tells us some interesting stories. Jonathan describes how he ensures that a political campaign charter is flown safely to the intended destination on time. We learn that the charter requirements can change as a campaign progresses and presumptive candidates emerge. For example, larger dedicated planes with special campaign livery can become necessary. Jonathan explains how critical it is that candidates do not miss major events. Sometimes he even arranges backup planes and standby crews. We also discover why some charter airlines don't want to be involved in political campaigns and others are happy to be part of a campaign. Jonathan also tells us about campaign security and how the Secret Service may participate in some flights. Jonathan is a veteran of political campaign charters. He grew up in the industry as his father coordinated all the charters for the Bush/Quayle campaign. Over the years, Jonathan has worked with both Republicans and Democrats, including George W. Bush, John Kerry, Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and many others. He coordinated aircraft charters for a major party candidate in every US Presidential Campaign cycle since the Bush/Cheney campaign in 2000. Find Advanced Aviation Team at their website, on X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Some political campaign charter incidents: John Edwards' Campaign Plane Makes Emergency Landing - John Edwards' Boeing 727-200 had to make an emergency landing after a press member's battery exploded in the overhead bins. Ann Romney's Plane Makes Emergency Landing - Ann Romney had electrical fire and smoke in the cabin of Challenger 600 and made an emergency landing in DEN. John Kerry's Boeing 757-200 developed a crack in the windshield in flight. This subsequently developed into a complete spiderweb. Obama plane incident could have been disaster - Barack Obama onboard Midwest Airlines MD81 had control surface issues after an inflatable slide opened in flight. ‘Several failures' led to 2016 plane crash with Vice President Mike Pence, investigation says - Mike Pence's Eastern Airlines B737 overran the runway at LGA. (Not an Advanced Aviation Team contract.) Aviation News Trump's Tariffs Could Deal a Blow to Boeing and the Aerospace Industry The aerospace industry is concerned that tariffs on aluminum and steel will raise manufacturing costs. There is particular concern about tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products since the North American aerospace supply chain is highly integrated. At a recent investor conference, Boeing's chief financial officer said the direct effects of the tariffs on Boeing would be limited, however, they could impact companies further down the aerospace supply chain. Those suppliers have struggled with material and labor shortages. Kevin Michaels, a past guest and a managing director of the AeroDynamic Advisory consulting firm, said the tariffs could raise costs for the aerospace industry by about $5 billion annually. Boeing wins Air Force contract for NGAD next-gen fighter, dubbed F-47 The U.S. Air Force has awarded the contract to develop the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter. Lockheed Martin competed with Boeing for the F-47 sixth-generation fighter, while Northrop Grumman dropped out of the competition in 2023. The Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) contract is thought to be worth about $20 billion.

Episode 542 - Nancy A. French - Ghosted Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Bestselling Author Pens Compelling Memoir of a Life of Poverty, Success and the Rise and Fall of Political Influence in ‘Ghosted' Nancy French chronicles her journey from the foothills of Appalachia to the Halls of the White House Five-time New York Times bestselling ghostwriter Nancy French crafts the story of a journey of hardship, heartbreak and healing in Ghosted: An American Story, releasing April 16, 2024. Nancy's family was born in the foothills of Appalachia into a life dominated by coal mining, violence, and poverty. Some of her family were proud members of the Ku Klux Klan who lived on the mountain. “The mountain was a playground of mischief, with its coal mines, ubiquitous guns, and plentiful dynamite. My dad described his twenty-five cousins as ‘rednecks, rough and ready,' and they drank, fought, and stole their way honestly onto wanted posters,” writes Nancy. “Compared to how my parents grew up, we were wealthy beyond our wildest imaginations … as far as I was concerned, we were living the American dream.” Growing up in the church, Nancy's childhood was full of innocence and a strong faith in God until betrayal of a trusted young preacher forced her to carry a dark secret of sexual abuse, which would one day spur her to advocate for herself and other survivors. It wasn't until her path crossed with a young Harvard Law School student named David that her faith and emotional well being was restored. Nancy left her college career, married and settled in New York City. Feeling she had escaped the mountain, she could have never imagined the twists and turns her life would take. She supported David as he was deployed to war and became friends with Ann Romney, who asked Nancy to write her memoir at the height of her husband's presidential campaign. Her writing journey led her to sitting in the home of the Palin family drafting Bristol Palin's book, which became a New York Times bestseller and set Nancy on a track of being one of the most-sought-after ghostwriters in conservative circles. “I'd had the ‘conservative talking points' down to a science,” Nancy writes. “I could write about American military strength, ‘family values,' and personal responsibility and know exactly how it would be received among other Conservatives.” Yet, Nancy went from conservative darling to suspected traitor when she stood her ground and refused to endorse an unsuitable president. She found herself isolated in a sea of political confusion and occupational uncertainty. “Politics felt like a battleground—where political barbs were warranted, expected, and part of the fun. Though I eschewed my family of origin's pugilism and violence on the mountain, combativeness was in my blood. I was prone to feistiness in my approach to politics because the stakes always seemed high. I wasn't about to let my deeply held beliefs be watered down by civility.” Facing ridicule from Republicans, targeting from white nationalists, and alienation from her church community, Nancy weathered threats, humiliation and ostracization to discover the power of her own voice and the unlikely allies hidden among perceived enemies. “The ‘religious right,' which I'd defended my whole life, had abandoned the posture of ‘family values' when they had the chance to gain a seat at the table,” writes Nancy. “It confused me to hear the values preached from the podium but ignored in real life. It was all a life, and so was the ‘lesser of two evils' myth.” Ghosted is not just a memoir; it's a poignant American narrative of transformation, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of love, blending humor and personal insights into an engrossing tale of change and loss. “Throughout my life, I desperately wanted to identify the ‘good' people and the ‘bad' people, so I could walk more confidently among them—befriending the good ones, avoiding the bad ones. I'd categorized people into tribes according to their political views, their church attendance, and their voting patterns. But this line was fuzzier than I'd originally believed,” writes Nancy. “Though I fiercely wanted people to be one thing and not two for simplicity's sake, people—as Walt Whitman wrote—contain multitudes. Me included.” The book releases from Zondervan on April 16, 2024. Sen. Mitt Romney was warned ahead of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol that he might be the target of violence from supporters of former President Donald Trump. That warning came from fellow Sen. Angus King of Maine, who himself was alerted to possible violence by America's top military leaders. That's just one of the dozens of startling revelations contained in the new book “I Alone Can Fix It: Donald J. Trump's Catastrophic Final Year” by Washington Post reporters Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig.Rucker says Gen. Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was alarmed by threats of violence on social media, so he gave Sen. King a heads up. “King then thought Mitt Romney is definitely a target. He's persona non grata for Trump world and MAGA supporters. King gave Romney a call who was at home with his wife,” Rucker says.Rucker and Leonnig spoke at length with Romney for their book. Romney told the pair he informed his wife, Ann, about the threats of violence as he prepared to return to Washington to certify Democrat Joe Biden's win in the 2020 election over Trump. Ann Romney pleaded with Mitt not to return to D.C., because it was too dangerous and his life could be at stake.“Mitt said he had to go back because it's his job and his duty. ‘Nothing is going to keep me from going, and by the way, I'll be safe in the U.S. Capitol. There's nothing that's going to happen to me there,' he told her,” Rucker said. Rucker says Romney was warned by his staffers on January 6 he had to get to safety as rioters broke into the Capitol. That led to the dramatic video of Romney running into Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman who told him to return to the Senate chamber because the rioters were just seconds away.“It's a chilling reminder of how close he came to real violence and potentially losing his life. He's the first person, maybe the second person behind Mike Pence, but one of the first people those rioters would have wanted to destroy,” Rucker says. Philip Rucker on Twitter: @PhilipRucker

Ann Lois Romney is an American equestrian, author, and philanthropist. She is the wife of businessman and politician, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. From 2003 to 2007, Romney was First Lady of Massachusetts, while her husband served as governor When Mitt and Ann Romney met in their late teens, a great American love story began. And their life together would be blessed: five healthy sons, financial security, and a home filled with joy. Despite the typical ups and downs, they had a storybook life. Then, in 1998, Ann was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She couldn't believe it was real; there were no therapies or treatments to help her. Mitt told her that day that they would tackle the diagnosis as a team: They were in it together. "As long as it isn't fatal, we're fine. If you have to be in a wheelchair, I'll be right there to push it," he told her. And Ann thought, "But I'll be the one in the wheelchair." A caregiver and helper her whole life, she'd crossed a terrible invisible line. She wouldn't be able to care for her family anymore. She was the patient. Ann and Mitt would face the most frightening and humbling experience of their lives. From reflections on her early life, her marriage, and her diagnosis and recovery, the sources of her faith, and the stories of others who overcame adversity and inspired her to keep going, In This Together is a brave and deeply honest portrait of a family facing an unexpected blow, often in the most public of circumstances."A lot of people talk about a transformation that happens when life throws you a curve ball, and the big one in my life was my MS diagnosis. With all the blessings I've had, MS has been my greatest teacher: It has taught me about faith, compassion, and serving others. I've met many people along the way who've shared advice and demonstrated enormous resilience in the face of challenges; their stories gave me strength. In sharing my story, I want to give others hope as I've been given hope on this journey."
In this week's episode, Tristan and Ethan discuss President Trump's authoritarian tendencies, dissect the QAnon conspiracy theory, speculate about the success of an Ann Romney write-in campaign, and recap the best speeches of the 2020 Democratic National Convention.
Ann Romney is the two-time best-selling author of “The Romney Family Table” and “In This Together” and Global Ambassador for the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Mrs. Romney also sits on the Board of Directors of CharityVision, which focuses on empowering local physicians in the developing world to bring sight to those most in need. In 1998, Mrs. Romney was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She has volunteered much of her time to raise awareness of the disease. By raising the profile of MS, as well as raising funds for advocacy and research, she is determined to make a difference in the lives of people who suffer from the disease. The Romneys have been married for 51 years. They have five sons, five daughters-in-law, and 25 grandchildren.
An uncertain future often accompanies the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Such was the case for Ann Romney. In this week's episode, she shares how the hope of eternal life carried her out of the darkness of depression and discouragement, leading her to fight for her life. She also explains why she now feels a responsibility to offer hope to others and what she is doing about it. "The Savior will fill in all the holes and all the gaps and all of the weaknesses, which become accentuated when you're sick. And it's a reminder that we cannot do this, never, not one of us can get there without the Savior. And it's a very sort of abrupt and sudden reminder that that's very true. We need His love. We need His forgiveness, and we need His mercy." Hi, I'm Connie Sokol, a national speaker, bestselling author, program founder, and mother of seven and loving it. I'm reaching and teaching 1 million listeners to live a purposeful, organized, and joyful life. You can too. So let's go. Welcome back to Balance Redefined. I'm Connie Sokol. Glad you're back for more great stuff. And today I want to share an important principle that I learned from Ann Romney. I've learned a lot of great things from her at different interviews that I've seen. She's just such a classy, elegant, real authentic woman. I love her and I love that she has stayed that way no matter what scuttle butt is swirling round her with her husband, Mitt Romney being so prominently in the political field and in the public eye that she gets all kinds of views and perspectives about her. And I love how she is just keeps moving forward, knows clearly who she is and stays focused on that. I feel that solidity from her and I love that. Now, a personal confession, another thing I love about her is her cookbook. Okay. I don't know if you know that she has a cookbook out and I get nothing for this. No commission related, but I have to tell you I love it. It's doable. Recipes of ingredients that you actually have in your cabinet and it's family kind of stuff. It's stuff for holidays and celebrations. It's stuff for snacks after school and treats and yummy things that you actually can make as kind of a novice or sort of a, I'm okay baker. I love to bake. I'm not necessarily a gorgeous baker. I'm more of a down and dirty eighty percenter baker like, hey, let's make it good. It looks good. All right, we're eating it, we're done. And so I love that she makes me look really good. Kind of nodding to that gourmet side, so I look a little bit stellar. Yeah. Yeah, it's the pride side taken over and I love that. I love that I can make something that's good, yummy and people love it and it looks good and I feel stellar. So anyway, those are some of the things that I love about Ann, but what I also love about this cookbook is that she has some personal thoughts in there, which is fantastic and she talks about being a mother of five boys. Now any of you out there that have boys know what I'm talking about because I had my three boys first and you know what? I love them like no tomorrow and I'm so grateful I had them first because I could practice on them and it was great. They had short term memory loss and that was awesome because they would do something and I would lose my mind and I would scream or I would yell and in a Scottish fashion I would leh, leh, leh leh like a good Scottish mother does and they would forget about it. Half an hour later they're off doing something else and we're all playing and laughing and doing whatever loved it. Had my three girls next, not so much the same grudge holding. That's all I got to say and in the good Scottish style grudge holding forever, but I have to say and give them their full Kudos that they learned very quickly. I would say how to be able to process through that and get over that quickly. Maybe is a loose word, maybe 10 years, but it did help them get through it and I love them dearly, not just being fairses , really want to tell the whole story there, but my boys, they were not happy unless they were destroying something or fighting something or hitting something. I don't know what that was. I was raised with mostly girls and just did not understand I had a stepbrother for a little while I did. I did not understand this phenomenon so I can so relate to what she's talking about. So I have to give a couple of quotes here and then I want to share with you the one thing that I really love to share about what I learned in here. Besides that, she is just a real genuine mom. She said "as a mother, a young mother with five boys home all day...", so been there, stayed home mom, "I occasionally reached my wit's end occasionally." Mine was quite more often than that. "The boys fought and fought and fought more than once. I slammed the door, got in the car and drove away telling the boys I wasn't coming back." Where was that in my life? I should have tried that. "Then I drive a block park in a spot where I could still see the house crisis and recharge." Have you been there? Oh yes. Usually, chocolate was involved. "You don't see pictures of those kinds of days because, well, I didn't jump to get out of the camera, get out the camera when I was near meltdown" and I agree. Some people say, you know, you don't post enough. Not me, but not yet anyway, but because I think I post quite a bit of them. But you know, people say, Oh, why don't people spend, you know, put - post more pictures that are just like the lame days of life. Really? Don't we have enough at that in our lives that we really have to go on social media to see that. Now you know me about authenticity. There has to be a balance but really I don't want to see that every day, every single post. I just don't. So, I love that she was honest about this and how hard it was honestly to raise five boys and I love that she shared this about Mitch. She said "he was often away work generally took him out in the road like two or three nights a week" and she said sometimes he would call and you can hear the boys fighting in the background and hear the weariness inner voice and he said this "Ann, what you are doing is more important that what I am doing your raising the kids who would be part of our lives forever. I'm just trying to earn the money to pay the bills". Now, I think that's a very gracious response because he's actually trying to make a difference in the world and he's actually trying to help in the greater good, you know? And as well as providing a stable and protective environment for his family in doing that. So I think that's really gracious that he put it in those kind of stark terms. Probably when you have a really on the edge wife, it's a really good thing to take that gracious meek stance. I would really highly recommend that. Anyway, what I love is that out of this, she said, it came to me that I realized that I needed to do something joyful and fun and she said, "I decided I needed to take an hour in the afternoon to do something that I love to do". And for her it was tennis. She said in her words, you know, "it was probably good for me to whack a tennis ball. It made me less inclined to want to whack the kids". And I've been there also. I love that she was really aware of that and she said it came, gave her energy and she come home, she'd have an enthusiasm and she also made some great friends. So here she's, getting that social connection that we women need and we start to lose when we have children because we're so in survival mode so much of the time and that becomes so much of our world. So, I love that she found that sweet spot, pun intended, that she realized the need to do something joyful for an hour on a daily basis to stay sane. Now I want to remind you, this good woman, she did not even as the wife of Mitt Romney, she did not employ a cook a nanny or a housekeeper. She did all of that herself. Now I have seven kids and I know somewhat of what that takes and I literally took a picture of the kitchen floor one day after I had cleaned it and sent it to my spouse and said, I want you to know that this is what it looks like far on average about 12 minutes a day. I want you to know I clean it about three times a day and I want you to see what it actually looks like because it will not look like that when you walk in the door. I mean, really, I just had to validate myself in some fashion that what I did actually mattered even when I couldn't see any fruits really of what I was doing on a given day. And I love that she also found out that it wasn't just this beautiful little, I'm going to make this plan and I'm going to do this for an hour and it's going to work out beautifully. It didn't. In fact one time she said she had a tennis tournament and she said, okay, it was really nearby city. She said, how bad could it be if I had a 13 and 11-year-old, you know, stay home together and I can just go for an hour and come back. It should be just fine. Well, she comes back and they had gotten into the fluffer nutter. Do you guys know what fluffer nutter is? Oh, it's so great! It's just this marshmallow, gooey kind of substance, sticky as all get out and you put it on peanut butter sandwich and then you kind of make sure that the toast is warm and I mean that the bread is warm or you toast it and it just grew with it. Oh, it is so, so, so good. Anyway, so they had gotten into the fluffer nutter and you know, the older brother had finished off the younger one, any spots that he had missed. And so it was everywhere. And she said when she would go for whatever time she went, she would plan for double that time for cleaning up whatever mess there might be. But you know, when you go and do something joyful, does that matter? No, I know that when I would go, I remember coming to a place of this Ann Romney place years ago and I had four children, six and under. And I was losing my mind. And I remember saying, I have to go out one night a week. I've got to go out for at least two hours. I have to do something or I'm not gonna make it. I had my oldest had Aspergers and it was, we didn't have it diagnosed. We didn't know what it was, finding these different doctors to try to find out what it was. But I was dealing with it all the time and it was just something else. No family help cause no family lives around me. And so it was really insane, truly on the edge. And I remember going, I say I, I'm getting a sitter and I am going and I went to Barnes and Noble and I would get a slice of cheesecake and I get a book and I'd sit down and one of those comfy chairs and I would read uninterrupted and savor the soft bites of that sweet, delicious cheesecake. Oh my word. It was so phenomenal. And when I was done, I would come home, I'd only have about an hour because I had a half hour travel time. And then I'd come home only an hour really. And I'd come home and I would be a new woman. I felt like, whoa. They mark it on the wall. It's okay! Oh, they broke my favorite vase, it's okay! All of it was fine because I was in cheesecake heaven and I was in. I've just read a book, enriched my mind and filled my soul. I'm happy, so it was all good. Believe me when I tell you it was all good. So I encourage you today, what do you think? I'm going to encourage you, you're already had me choose something joyful to do. Carve bit into your schedule market, stamp it, emblazon it, whatever you need to brand it. Chuck & Patrick discuss Chuck's contention that Obama will try to raise taxes in a second term which Patrick calling this "propaganda." They interview Jackie Salit, political independent organizer and author of Independents Rising. Chuck accuses Jackie and her group of being shills for Obama. Chuck discusses with Patrick a comment made by Democratic operative Hilary Rosen that Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life." Chuck and Patrick interview Robert Zubrin, author of Merchants of Dispaiir who traces the role of the idea of scarcity through the progressive movement starting with Thomas Malthus, the father of population control, to Darwin's survival of the fittest, to Eugenics, to the Nazi and Communist progressive political experiments and to the present time with global warming, environmentalism and the rest. Patrick, who clearly did not read the book, tried to denounce Zubrin by focusing on one footnote in which Zubrin sited an article by a researcher who later changed her opinion. Patrick presented this as evidence that Zubrin's book was not honest, that his scholarship was questionable and that therefore the thesis which he presented should be ignored and rejected. Chuck contended that Patrick tried to change the subject by trying to discredit the author instead of discussing his thesis which appeared to make him uncomfortable.

Summary of today's show: It's finally Election Day and Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor welcome Michael Lavigne and David Harris—a former Senate staffer turned seminarian—discuss today's election, their experiences at the polls, and their predictions for the presidential election, the Mass. Senate race, ballot question 2, and other public policy issues and political offices in play today. Will our panel of pundits' predictions hold up to the actual polls? Listen to the show: Watch the show via live video streaming or a recording later: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor Today's guest(s): Michael Lavigne and David Harris Links from today's show: Today's topics: Election Day Special 1st segment: Scot Landry welcomed everyone to Election Day and he said he's been looking forward to this day, especially given his work on the assisted suicide question. Fr. Chris O'Connor said he's locking himself down by going to Norfolk State Prison to minister to the convicts. He voted this morning near his home in Winthrop. Scot said he's heard many reports from the polls from people who saw people holding up No on 2 signs. It's a moving testimony to people having got the message on assisted suicide. Scot said the Church hasn't educated on a public policy issue in decades like she has on Question 2. Fr. Chris said he's glad the Church has been such a strong articulate voice on this question. Fr. Chris related how he heard one Libertarian radio show host said he changed his mind on Question 2 after hearing the ads and other information about the issue. Scot said Cardinal Seán first spoke on assisted suicide 14 months ago and the Boston Globe blasted him for it, but now the Globe editorial board has come out on the same side as the Cardinal. Fr. Chris said his eight-year-old nephew Noah dressed as Mitt Romney for Halloween this year and gave his biggest endorsement to the former governor. He said some of the eight-year-old's comments on all three debates have been at least as edifying as the comments heard from the pundits on MSNBC. 2nd segment: Scot said tomorrow's show will reflect on what happened today. Scot welcomed our guests Michael Lavigne and David Harris, who's a seminarian with experience in political campaigns. Michael said he's voting tonight in his new home of Taunton. David said he's a resident of New Hampshire and voted via absentee ballot. Scot said David worked in politics before entering the seminary. David credited his very liberal roommates at Providence College for his interest in politics and getting involved. He went to Washington and worked for Sen. John Sununu from New Hampshire. He also did some campaigning and then after worked in the private sector doing some issue political campaigning. Scot asked his sense of how the election might go in New Hampshire. David said he didn't know a single person in New Hampshire who isn't voting, and he thinks Romney has a shot. David said New Hampshire voters have been pragmatic and have wanted ideas that work and seeing the last four years they might see Mitt Romney as a problem solver. Scot said he was at his polling place in Belmont by 7am and was about 35th in line. He can't remember it ever being that deep in his 11 years. His 6-year-old son Dominic accompanied him and was talking up the people in line about Question 2. Scot said there's not a lot that usually happens in Belmont, but about 8:35am Mitt and Ann Romney came to vote in Belmont. His sense was the about 400 or 500 residents were there and nearly an equal number of media people. Unfortunately, there were no Vote No on 2 signs and he had given away his last one. Fr. Chris added that the Brown and Warren Senate race is also neck and neck and the national media are watching that. Scot said Michael has lived in Rhode Island and Maine, so what does think about the way Massachusetts does it. Michael said the big difference is that in this Senate race your vote matters, but in Rhode Island it's mostly landslides for the Democrat. He said in Maine three years ago they had a ballot on same-sex marriage like we have on Question 2. He's hoping that the experience in Maine is replicated where polling said same-sex marriage would win by 2 points but traditional marriage won by 7. Scot asked David about his opinion of the polls that show the dead heat in Question 2. David said when he was campaigning he worked on the ground and they mostly ignored them in order to not get distracted. But polling can matter, especially in the past few weeks as the polls showed some states coming into play for Romney. Good polling is valuable, but it's not an exact science. There's a reason we actually cast a vote and don't let polls choose our leaders. Scot referred to a poll from a TV station in Western Massachusetts on Question 2 that broke down by religious background. Of those who are regular Mass attendees, more than 70% will vote No, while those who go to Mass once per month or less supported Question 2 at about 49%. There were similar numbers for Protestants. While those who are agnostic or atheist, 90% supported it. Fr. Chris said this is clear evidence that the Church speaks clearly on the value of life at all stages. He read a quote from a recent George Weigel column that said the inalienable right to life and the nature of marriage have to be upheld by Catholics at the polls. Scot said it's been awkward for him in the election to see how the leaders of one party and its party platform have treated the Catholic leadership and Catholic belief in contempt. He said he's not trying to be partisan. HE referred to Archbishop Chaput who said the Democratic Party platform has drifted from alignment with Catholic beliefs because Catholics haven't fought for it in the platform. While Republicans aren't guaranteed not to go the same way, it's hard today as a Catholic not to be troubled by the Democratic Party platform. David said as a Christian you want try to be pastoral and loving, but at the same time you have to defend the truth and support what the Church teaches. He's been learning to mercifully tell the truth to those who still support the Democratic Party. He said Cardinal Seán has outlined for everyone in this archdiocese how we need to vote if we want to be Catholic, what principles we have to live by and vote by. Fr. Chris said we don't just vote the party. The characters of political parties change over time. We have a sacred duty in the voting booth that we're not only voting for ourselves, but for the common good. We should never outsource this ability who's going to lead out country. Scot said Archbishop Chaput also said it's a sacred duty to be able to vote and we need to be a Catholic before we're a Democrat or Republican or even American. Michael said he's had friends try to pigeonhole him as Republican or Democrat, but he's a Catholic who stands up and takes seriously his responsibility as a Catholic. To be Catholic is to not completely agree with either party's platform, but there are some issues which stand above the others, which the bishops pointed out are defense of human life and traditional marriage. David pointed out a story on Drudge Report how Vice President Joe Biden said if he loses today, he'll go back home to run for county commissioner. Scot said he finds Biden likable, while Fr. Chris said he found him to be rude in the vice presidential debate. But Scot said he liked how Biden is just himself, like in his first press conference when introduced as VP running mate when he took time to compliment his wife's looks. Michael said he likes to remember that these are human beings running for office and their human dignity. Fr. Chris said he particularly liked the moment after one of the debates when Mitt Romney's grandson went up to President Obama and shake his hand. 3rd segment: Scot said today is an historic day in the US where we either elect a new president or re-elect a president. Scot said it's fun to predict what will happen. He asked Michael for his prediction. Michael said while no one really knows, he said writer Peggy Noonan has said there's a palpable sense that things are going Romney's way. He thinks that ROmney will win both electoral college and popular vote. Popular vote will be 52% for Romney he thinks and it will be decided at 12:30AM. He asked David his prediction. David said he agreed that Peggy Noonan was right. He agreed that Romney will win with 50% of the popular vote and will be decided by midnight. He agreed with Karl Rove's estimate of 289 electoral college votes. He thinks the governorship and Congressional seats will go Democrat. Scot said he's disappointed that Republican Ovid Lamontaigne isn't likely to win because he's a good Catholic. Fr. Chris predicts Romney will win with 305 electoral college votes and before he finishes his ricotta pie at 11:30pm. He thinks Ohio will be the decider. He's really concerned with Ohio and it's the bellwether. Romney hadn't been getting the ground in Ohio in recent weeks, but finally there's a sense of momentum behind Romney now. Scot asked what they make of Romney campaigning today in Ohio and Pennsylvania while Obama hangs out in Chicago. Some think it's a good idea on Romney's part while others think Romney is keeping campaign workers from getting out the vote. Fr. Chris said it's a sign that Romney has brought Ohio and Pennsylvania back into play. He cited Rush Limbaugh who said he thinks there's a momentum behind Romney. Scot said he thinks Romney will get 276 electoral college and only 49% of the vote to Obama's 48%. He doesn't think we'll officially know until November 17. Tomorrow we'll hear the projections, but four or five states will have an automatic recount with several weeks to sort it all out. Fr. Chris said he'll need another ricotta pie. Turning to the Senate race, he asked Michael's prediction. Michael said he thinks Brown will eke out a narrow victory against Warren. 50 to 48. David agrees it will be super-close and he thinks Brown will win because of the Catholics coming out to Vote No on 2. He predicted Brown 49 to 48 percent. They discussed whether there will be a recount and David predicted not. Fr. Chris said he's nervous. He heard on the radio today that so many Democrats coming out for Obama will push it to Warren. Scot predicted she will win by 3 or 4 points. Scot said you have to measure the street signs and the enthusiasm, and he's seen a lot of enthusiasm for Warren has been higher and he's seen yard signs for Warren to Brown at a 20 to 1 ratio. He said he saw Elizabeth Warren banners on nearly every overpass on Route 128 coming down from Belmont to Braintree today. His sense is that the large statewide Democratic infrastructure is back in play in support of Warren. Fr. Chris said the 2010 election was not a general election, but a sort of surprise in January and it aided Brown in winning that race. He added he had a friend out on the Southeast Expressway with Romney and Brown signs getting a lot of positive response. On the issue of Question 2, Scot asked Michael his prediction. He said he compared it to the same-sex marriage question in Maine in 2009 and predicted the same outcome as 52-45. David said he thinks Question 2 will be defeated. Fr. Chris agreed. Scot made it unanimous as 52-46. Scot said the tide turned on Question 2 in recent weeks as most of the major newspapers endorsed a No on 2 position and there have been almost no visibility for Yes on 2 questions. He thinks the word-of-mouth and passion will carry the day. He said the hope is that people will walk into the ballot box knowing question 2 is the assisted suicide question and decided to vote No, but if not people will be deterred by the dense language on the ballot and vote No or abstain. On other issues, Fr. Chris said he wonders how New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie might have helped the president or hurt him after meeting with him after Hurricane Sandy. He said most polls show the Senate will stay with the Democrats and the Republicans will gain seats in the House. He thinks that's not necessarily a bad thing. David said RealClearPolitics.com has an aggregate poll that shows the difference between four years ago and today, where Obama has so much less of an advantage. Michael said he's looking at the referendums on marriage in four states where it's so tight in all those states. Scot said he'll be looking at how Catholics are voting, given his activity in education on Question 2. He hopes Catholic votes start to look different from everyone else's because we're called to be leaven in society and not just to go along.

My Jedi Shadow Brings All The Sith To The Yard Week of: April 16 – April 23, 2012 I kick off this week’s program by briefly discussing my newest nerd obsession, “Star Wars: The Old Republic” (SWTOR) and my first experience with an MMORPG…n00b style. Is it worth trading an hour of sleep each night per level my character rises? Moving on to the week in news, I discuss the burden and hardship that Ann Romney had to endure while raising 5 boys full-time with only a mere $250 million in the bank, nannies, personal assistants and custom car elevators. As the general election heats up – and with Romney becoming the presumptive GOP nominee – the battle for female voters has taken center stage. With the President’s 20 point lead among women in battleground states, the GOP latch onto an unfortunate statement from a Democratic operative as their proof that the President is waging, “a War on Women” by using Multi-Millionaire stay-at-home-Mom, Ann Romney, as their expert (and martyr) on women’s issues in the workplace, apparently. I’ll ask my single Mom who raised 4 children on her own – while working double-shifts 6 days a week at 2 hospitals – if she feels that Mrs. Romney speaks for and understands average Moms in the country. As always, enjoy the show! stimulatedboredom.com | facebook.com/stimulatedboredom
