Hello and Welcome Back to The Earth Sea Love Podcast. Dr Sheree Mack, your host here. I'll not lie. The promise I made at the beginning of 2023 of dropping at least one episode each month of the podcast was in the balance this month. July. A time I love to tie up loose end, retreat and rest. Call it the teacher in me, as I'm someone from time who loves to take the summer holidays off the clock. This year is no exception, except that I've just moved house and needed a rest more than ever. So this episode has been on the back burner. Knowing it's something I wanted to do, and promised to do, didn't help the process of getting it done. But finally it is here. I needed to get out of my head and just get into my body to produce it. I needed to get out of my way and just talk from the heart about my current learning. Permaculture Design. So I started a Permaculture Design Certificate course with Liz Postlethwaite this spring. It will take me a year to complete and along the way, I'm learning a lot of new things about regenerative systems and how to apply this to my practice and creative projects. I am just about getting into it now, after a slow, tentative, reluctant start as I discuss within this episode. I've been experiencing a fair about of conflict and tension about Permaculture and Permaculture Design basically because of its roots and their acknowledgment. So within this beginning episode of a mini series around Permaculture Design, I discuss: * the difference between Permaculture and Permaculture Design * the purpose of Permaculture Design * the ethics and principles of Permaculture Design * the creation of the terms and concepts of Permaculture Design * the indigenous roots of Permaculture Design * the roots of my conflict and tensions with Permaculture Design * what to expect in the forthcoming episodes of the mini-series. Keep an eye out on The Earth Sea Love Zine over on substack for more thinking and discussions around the issues raised and practices learnt throughout this mini series as well as the Permaculture Design Certificate course as a whole.

Pippa explains how to create multiple layers on a small-scale to maximise your growing area, using polycultures and guilds for healthy, low-maintenance food. She shares how to use perennials for structure and for year-round food, and how to incorporate flowers for beauty, wildlife and for the kitchen. She was introduced to forest gardening and permaculture and in 2010 set up a sustainable gardening business with her husband - Those Plant People. She grows a wide variety of fruits, flowers, herbs and annual and perennial vegetables in her small backyard, creating a beautiful, edible and wildlife friendly space. You can find her on instagram and youtube too.LEARN PERMACULTURE WITH MORAG GAMBLE Permaculture Gardening Course Permaculture Design Course (coming June 2023)Permaculture Educators Program - includes integrated Permaculture Design Certificate and Permaculture Teacher Certificate program This podcast is an initiative of the Permaculture Education Institute. Our way of sharing our love for this planet and for life, is by teaching permaculture teachers who are locally adapting this around the world - finding ways to apply the planet care ethics of earth care, people care and fair share. Permaculture is a design science for creating regenerative landscapes. In rewilding, we often perceive it as a kind of technology based on ancient hunter-gatherer-horticultural subsistence strategies from around the world. While there are many valuable criticisms about permaculture (just as there are about rewilding), it is still one of the most effective tools for creating alternative subsistence strategies to the extractive ones that dominate our world today. To understand how far we've come, we need to listen to the elders of the movement and hear all they have endured and accomplished to get us where we are today. Hazel Varrde is one such elder for me, and the rewilding community.Hazel began gardening around age five. They earned degrees in Forestry and Systematic Botany from Syracuse University and SUNY College of Forestry in 1969. Hazel taught Wild Edible Plants and Woods-lore at Laney College in Oakland CA in the early 70's and helped Bill Mollison teach the first Permaculture Design Course at Evergreen State College in 1982. Hazel has taught various Permaculture courses ever since, becoming a notorious teacher and proponent of social forestry. I first met Hazel in 2009 during my Permaculture Design Certificate course with Toby Hemenway. Hazel was the only guest teacher in the class who seemed to share my vision of a rewilded future, and I knew that I needed to go and learn from them directly. I took their Social Forestry class in 2015, and then came back as a guest teacher the following year. I've since continued to practice various forms of social forestry, while sending many people their way. Land tending is an integral part of rewilding, and social forestry is an inspiring model for us to use. Hazel has finally finished their book on Social Forestry, and you can pre-order it now. I am happy to help get the word out.NotesSocial Forestry by Tomi Hazel VaardeSiskiyou PermacultureMentionsPlaying with Fire: Social Forestry with Hazel by Peter Michael BauerSupport the show

Ecostentialism™ combines existentialism with environmental psychology to foster the connection between people and the environment. She has a diploma in Architectural Technologies from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). After finding out that the home builder she was working for had people sign waivers to remove liabilities for low exposure to sour gas in areas where many of the purchasers had English as second language, she decided to return to school to pursue work more in line with her values. She obtained a bachelor of arts degree in Psychology from Athabasca University graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.74/4.0. She has seven years experience working in front line homelessness in various capacities. Including client services, community facilitation and client sustainability strategy. So many of the theories and premises utilized stem from behaviorism which assumes that people do not have a consciousness. This fundamentally negates everything she has learned about the human condition. Within each of these roles she was an active agent for creating more effective systems and integrating sustainability measures that were put into practice. Barbara created a sustainable clothing based eCommerce company where every component of the business and supply chain were vetted for environmental sustainability and practice. She is currently taking her Permaculture Design Certificate with Verge Permaculture in order to refine her capacity to integrate not only sustainable, but regenerative methodologies into abstract systems within businesses and organizations. Barbara is adept at finding systemic solutions among abstract and organizational systems that manage people. Join me and Dr Millie Rooney as we dive into her explorations of the kinds of future people want and the new stories people are imagining.Millie is the National Coordinator for Australia reMADE, a vision-based collaboration of everyday people and community leaders working to build a country where people and planet come first. As a kid she spent hours collecting toothbrushes outside supermarkets for Gulf War refugees and, although wasn't allowed to watch movies for fear of scary themes like ‘divorce', was aware from a young age of scarier things like ‘war'. As a result Millie's dream was to become a butterfly dancer on stilts, catch the eye of a journalist and make it to the front page of the paper so that there could be some good news for once. Is it any surprise she ended up involved in Australia reMADE?Millie grew up in Canberra on Ngunnawal country and although now calls Tasmania home, she misses the dry scrappy dirt, the warble of the magpies and the smooth, flat bike paths.Millie has worked as an environment officer at both the Australian National University and the University of Tasmania. She has constantly worked off the principle of ‘delight not fright' which has resulted in Celebrate Sustainability Days, visions for student-led campus transformation and an award winning student sustainability internship program.Millie's PhD was an exploration into the social norms that determine our ability as Australian's to share, or not, with our neighbours. I had such fun with this episode of Sense-Making in a Changing World. I am joined by my great friend Suzie Cahn, a leader from the Irish permaculture world and active in permaculture education globally. She is an adventurous teacher who's worked with communities from Mongolia to Belize. Back in 2008, Suzie and her husband Mike established Carraig Dúlra - social enterprise, community education, nature connection and permaculture hub in County Wicklow and is exploring her Irish indigeneity through this lens.Suzie and I met at a climate change conference in Findhorn Scotland a few years back and just clicked. She coordinates a Climate Justice Centre in Ireland piloting community-led approaches to Climate Action and is active in ECOLISE (the European network for community-led initiatives on climate change and sustainability). She deeply involved in the transition and permaculture movementsYou can hear her speak about her many threads of interest in her own podcast Cailleach (you'll hear this episode there too - we did the beautiful multi-functional permaculture thing and interviewed each other!)You can also catch the youtube version of this conversation here.FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PERMACULTUREJoin me to learn more about permaculture. It is my pleasure to share with you this Sense-making in a Changing World conversation with Dr Brian von Herzen, the executive director at Climate Foundation, initiator of the marine permaculture movement and member of the Permaculture Education Institute. Marine permaculture has been featured on the 2040 Movie and in Paul Hawken's latest book, Drawdown. Listen in to find out more about Marine Permaculture - what it is, how it works, what benefits it has for ecosystem restoration and reversing climate change, as well as local livelihoods in the global south and contribution to land-based permaculture systems. Marine permaculture is an innovation in permaculture that has the potential to make a significant contribution. Brian is working closely with permaculture co-founder David Holmgren, to describe how the terrestrial and marine permaculture approaches align, and how the permaculture principles are incorporated into the marine context. You can watch a previous permaculture masterclass that Brian and I made together about Marine Permaculture (80 min) and also choose to watch this podcast here on youtube.FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PERMACULTUREJoin me to learn more about permaculture. This week I had the great pleasure of talking with highly sought-after farmland restoration and rehydration expert, Natural Sequence Farmer, Stuart Andrews about what we need to be doing to restore Australian farming landscapes, ecosystems and food systems. We also explore the close connection between Natural Sequence Farming and Permaculture. There are pure gems in this conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed this chance to catch up with Stuart again. Stuart Andrews is a farmer who has dedicated over 30 years of his life to understanding, practicing and teaching land rehabilitation techniques. He was raised at the 1500 acre “Tarwyn Park” in NSW, the celebrated home of Natural Sequence Farming, pioneered by his father Peter Andrews OAM. Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) is now internationally recognised as a significant innovation in sustainable agriculture and land care, and the story of Tarwyn Park has featured many times on the ABC program Australian Story - and here on another episode about Mulloon Farm .Stuart has been involved in public education for most of his adult life and is passing this gift to his sons too, who now run tours at Forage Farms near Gympie - further down the Mary River from where I live.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!YOUTUBE VERSIONWatch this episode on Sense-Making in a Changing World Youtube & Subscribe.FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PERMACULTUREJoin me to learn more about permaculture. I am so happy to introduce you to Sarah Queblatin - the co-founder of Green Releaf in the Phillipines in this episode of Sense-making in a Changing World. Sarah and I met as part of Re-Alliance - a global permaculture humanitarian initiative, we are both permaculture teachers, Global Ecovillage Network Ambassadors and members of Permaculture for Refugees. We also have a connection because she is one of the key leaders of a brand new program for youth run by the Global Ecovillage Network Oceania and Asia - which my daughter, Permayouth co-founder, took part in just recently called ReGEN Nations. This is the kind of enabling collaborative ecosystem she designs - others include Re:Source Regeneration Labs with Green Releaf, and the 4 Returns Labs with Commonland. We also share our activism roots in peace and both work towards whole systems change through education.Sarah is passionate about transforming the narrative of Disaster Risk Reduction or DRR, into that of Designing for Resilience and Regeneration for communities affected by disasters, displacement, and unsustainable development. Her passion project, Living Story Landscapes, weaves traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and permaculture using the arts and culture in designing places of remembrance, resilience, and regeneration in climate and conflict vulnerable communities. Sarah is also an artist, using creativity as a pathway for personal and collective transformation. In this episode of Sense-Making in a Changing World, we take a dive into the kind of education the planet (and humanity) needs us to share with the young people in our lives ... of all ages. My guest is author, educator, activist and cultural creative - Lucy Legan. Lucy has recently launched her latest book, Planet Schooling . She is also co-founder of the most substantial permaculture/regenerative education centre in Latin America, Ecocentro IPEC which she started about 25 years ago in Brazil with her partner, Andre Soares that has hosted thousands of learners and visitors. Lucy like me lives and breathes a permaculture life and I am so inspired by the work that she has done around the world following her passion for earth care, people care and fair share. She has implemented permaculture and ecoliteracy education programs (planet schooling) in so many contexts - from schools to festivals around the world. I invite you to join us in this conversation about the many dimensions of planet schooling. It's a brilliant concept - a platform for schools and homeschoolers alike. Particularly as education has been turned on it's head this past year, and we need to reconceptualise what education is for, what is at the core of what we teach, how we share it and where it happens. LUCY'S NEW BOOKPlanet Schooling - How to create a permaculture living laboratory in your backyardLucy explores how very garden has the potential to equip the young people in our lives with the skills to create their future. She has included more than 150 activities for all ages of children from K-12. Essentially this book is a creative and fun practical guide to constructing a living laboratory in your own backyard (or front yard, balcony, verge, school ....). This week you are in for a treat on Sense-making in a Changing World Podcast. Come with me on a walk and talk through the iconic Findhorn community in Scotland with Findhorn College permaculture teacher, Maria Cooper, exploring how permaculture is applied - and discover a beautiful permaculture garden and life philosophy at the home of Craig Gibsone - an elder of the Findhorn community. Permaculture here is love in action. Both Maria and Craig share deep insights about living a permaculture life and ways of growing abundance in a cool climate - having fresh food year round.Originally from Australia, Craig has been a central figure in the development of permaculture and ecovillage education at Findhorn and has lived at Findhorn for 50 years. Maria moved more recently to Findhorn. She is deeply involved in the transition and permaculture movements locally and internationally, and runs the Permaculture Design Courses and Ecovillage Design Education programs.__________________________________LEARN PERMACULTURE WITH MORAG GAMBLEPermaculture is a foundation skill for living this kind of way of life, and being a permaculture educator is a great livelihood. What a pleasure to share this conversation with you today on Sense-Making in a Changing World with my wonderfully talented friend, Jane Milburn. Jane is a Slow Clothing champion and 2019 Churchill Fellow. She presents a compelling case for why we need to change the way we dress. She is also the founder and creative force of Textile Beat - inspired by her growing understanding of the impacts of our clothes on people and planet, and our own personal health.Jane published Slow Clothing: Finding meaning in what we wear in 2017 and throughout it presents a new narrative about clothing that is regenerative. Slow clothing is more than just wearing natural clothes . Jane has a whole slow clothing philosophy which she shares through her slow clothing manifesto: think, natural, quality, local, few, care, make, revive, adapt, salvage.Jane offers a beautiful everyday practical philosophy that is accessible to everyone everywhere, that brings us to wholeness through living more simply, creatively and fairly .I hope you love this conversation just as much as I did, and see how it's the little things we do that can actually make the world the of difference. Since Jane wasn't able to travel this year with her Churchill Scholarship due to COVID, she held a 'virtual Churchill' - zooming with her guests. Check out her interviews on Textile Beat. To make the most of her time, she did her permaculture design course and immediately saw the parallels and calls slow clothing. For this episode of Sense-Making in a Changing World Podcast , I am in Lammas Ecovillage, Wales with the founder, Tao Wimbush. I loved visiting this community and was so warmly welcomed by Tao. I hope you enjoy this conversation - full of so many practical tips for one planet living.Lammas is an off-grid permaculture village with a community of 50 adults and many children, with interesting natural homes and is the first One Planet Development Ecovillage in the UK. Tao tells me how it is possible to buy land and build a home like his for around 20,000 UK Pounds. That's incredible! There is a lot of potential for young people to create land-based communities like Lammas in the Welsh countryside very affordably. We tour his house - it's beautiful and hand-crafted from local resources.Tao and I talk about the ideas behind One planet Development, how the village works and why people come there. He helps others make a shift to this way of life through education and consulting and is an expert in One Planet Development.Tao is the author of 'Birth of an Ecovillage' and presented an internet TV series 'Living in the Future'. His background is in architecture and carpentry, and he's lived in a wide range of alternative communities, and dwelled in tipis, yurts and roundhouses.I recorded this conversation pre-covid when I was in Wales last year, and will release the extended version with tours of the landscape and common spaces soon.Lammas was featured on Kevin McLeod's Grand Designs._______________LEARN PERMACULTURELearning permaculture is a foundation skill for moving to this kind of way of life, and being a permaculture educator provides a great foundation for a livelihood in this context. It is my delight to share this conversation with Joel Glanzberg today on Sense-making in a Changing World.Joel, based in New Mexico is a tracker, a regenerative design practitioner and permaculture teacher/builder/farmer/designer/thinker. He has been immersed in permaculture for over 30 years and loves what permaculture offers- particularly the way of seeing and being in the world from a pattern perspective, of bringing vitality and regeneration, and to cultivate a capacity to see the beauty of the world we are a part of - the beauty of life.Joel first took a permaculture design course in 1986 and studied with Bill Mollison too. Through many decades of deep connection with permaculture in many contexts - with First Nations communities, with education and design - Joel shares how his understanding and perception of permaculture has changed over the years and where he sees permaculture people offering their highest potential in the context of the world today.Joel is a founding partner of the Regenesis Group - a collective of regenerative design practitioners rethinking development - exploring regenerative development - transforming the way humans inhabit the earth. In this episode of Sense Making in a Changing World, I am speaking with my dear friend Cyndi O'Meara - best-selling author of Changing Habits Changing Lives, nutritionist, activist, film-maker, TEDx speaker, and founder of Changing Habits wholefood company and the Changing Habits Farm. Cyndi is a thought leader pushing the boundaries of our understanding of what is good food - uncovering what is wrong in our current food system - why it is making us so sick. For cyndi, everything begins and ends with food.In this conversation we explore permaculture, health and good food. We've actually been collaborating for some time on her farm and through my course, The Incredible Edible Garden Course which she also offers through her Nutrition Academy.Cyndi graduated with a degree in Nutrition from Deakin University in 1984 where her special interest was ancestral foods. At the end of her degree she was so disillusioned by the nutritional guidelines that she paved her own path, steering clear of the low-fat diets of the day. Her groundbreaking 1998 book Changing Habits Changing Lives became an instant bestseller and has now been updated and revised - now called Lab to Table: The Truth a bout Food - Change the Way you Eat |Step by step guide. In 2016 Cyndi released the acclaimed documentary What’s With Wheat?’ which received 150,000 downloads globally in the first week. Cyndi educates people so they are empowered to know better, eat better and live better - because she believes educating people about whole food is the key to a rebellion and everyone deserves to know exactly what they are eating. It is my absolute delight to share with you my conversation with Ego Lemos from Timor Leste on Sense-Making in a Changing World.Ego is a humble yet radical positive change-maker, who grew up in the tumultuous time of the Indonesian occupation. His work over the decades with Permaculture has caused it to mushroom in his country. He is largely responsible for permaculture being a compulsory subject for EVERY primary school aged child in his country. Permaculture is in the National curriculum and starting to extend to high schools too. Since 2011 he has lectured about Permaculture at the National University and invites students to come and learn practical permaculture skills around the countryside (which they get credit for).Ego has launched Permakids and Permayouth and the camps he's been running since 2008 always have well over a thousand youth! They arrange many 3 day workshops for the youth to build great practical skills. Ego also organises permaculture teacher training, Water Youth Camps for upstream rehabilitation and advises the government. As well as being a highly respected permaculture leader in his country, and a TEDx speaker, he is a singer-songwriter. His song Balibo was awarded best original song composed for the screen at the 2009 Screen Music Awards and a 2009 APRA Award for best song in a film - it was the title song from the movie Balibo, featuring Damon Gameau and Anthony La Paglia.Permayouth programs are so important in Timor - a young country with over 70% of the population under 30 years old and 70% of people living in faming areas. It continues to be one of the poorest countries in the world with 40%+ of their 1.3 million population living in poverty.Listen in to hear how Ego created Permakids, Permayouth, restoration camps, teacher training, school programs and more. Ego is also a founder of Permatil Global and co-author of the remarkable 1000+ page Tropical Permaculture Manual that is available online as a pay-as-you-can offering. It is in English and now the language of Timor Leste, Tetum, and is being translated to other languages too. Sarah speaks to the Earth Friendly Gardener, John Walker about the use of peat in our gardens. We all know it's bad, but how bad is it and what's being done to prevent the use of peat in horticultural products? Is it realistic to think we can eradicate our use of peat? John is one of the foremost experts on this topic and it's fascinating to hear his thoughts. Sobering stuff indeed... About John: “As well as being a lifelong gardener and allotmenteer, I’m also an award-winning British gardening and environment writer with over 30 years combined experience in professional gardening, horticultural teaching and the garden media. I trained as a student gardener at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens & Glasshouses, Cambridge University Botanic Garden, and at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, England, where I was awarded the Kew Diploma in Horticulture in 1986. I gained a Permaculture Design Certificate in 1997. While in publishing, I’ve been both features and deputy editor of Garden Answers magazine, contributing editor of Kitchen Garden magazine, and have been technical editor of The Organic Way. My long-running ‘digging deeper’ column, exploring the connections between gardening and our wider environment first appeared in Organic Gardening (later Organic Garden & Home) magazine in 2006. I write and blog about greener, earth-friendly gardening for national newspapers, magazines and websites. My work has been published in NFU Countryside, Garden Answers, Garden News, Grow It!, Kew magazine, Organic Gardening (later Organic Garden & Home), the Telegraph, The Garden, The Organic Way and Kitchen Garden, and online at the Guardian and Hartley Botanic. I’m the author of the new and updated Weeds: An Organic, Earth-Friendly Guide to Their Identification, Use and Control and The Bed & Border Planner, the editor of A Gardeners’ Guide to Annuals, and a major contributor to the Garden Organic Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening.” John’s website is a treasure trove of articles and information, please do check it out: http://earthfriendlygardener.net You can buy a signed copy of John's latest book, Weeds: An Organic, Earth-friendly Guide to Their Identification, Use and Control' here Get in touch; Email podcast@rootsandall.co.uk Website www.rootsandall.co.uk Twitter @rootsandall Instagram rootsandallpod Patreon Link; Help us keep the podcast free & independent! #21. April 25, 2019. Takota Coen is one of Canada's youngest and innovative pioneering permaculture farmers. Takota along with his family farm 250 acres of prime agriculture land just east of Ponoka Alberta near Red Deer Lake. https://www.coenfarm.ca/ They practice a form of land stewardship called Permaculture. Permaculture is a set of design principles centered around whole systems thinking simulating or directly utilizing the patterns and resilient features observed in natural ecosystems. Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; looking at the interaction of plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system, which has been the basis of industrial agriculture for decades. Takota was born, raised and now helps steward Coen Farms using permaculture principles. The Coen family has been transforming their farm into an agro-ecological oasis since 1988. Their story began in 1988 the Coen family could no longer ignore the declining health of their land, their animals, their family & their community. They decided to eliminate all chemical fertilizers & biocides. Today, Takota along with his parents continue that tradition, & with the addition of permaculture design & holistic management their 250 acre award winning farm is proud to be a part of the growing regenerative agriculture revolution that is healing the planet & its people. He holds a Permaculture Design Certificate from The Permaculture Research Institute, a Holistic Management Certificate, and a Red Seal Certificate for Carpentry. When he is not busy farming, Takota works to empower others with the tools and resources to design, implement, and manage resilient living systems that are Earth restorative. Takota spoke with me about how he envisions permaculture being the basis of not only a new era in growing food and healing our bodies but also as a model for the economy; a key platform for building an economy of well-being. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-anielski/message

Inspiration through film. In This Podcast: She's had a “greenie” intuition as a youth but spent part of her adulthood pursuing a publishing career and a side venture as a tango dancer, but Antoinette Wilson found herself living in a permaculture-based community for a year and it changed her life. She partnered up with another community member to write and make documentaries about the lifestyle they were experiencing, and even made some short films about others who were doing their best to have better impacts on their space. These documentaries and short films are inspiring others to take steps toward change too. Don't miss an episode! Click here to sign up for podcast updates or visit www.urbanfarm.org/podcast Tasmania-born and New Zealand-bred, Antoinette began her professional career in book publishing and dreamt of managing the editorial offices of Random House New York by the age of 40. Instead, just before her 40th birthday she took on the management of the harvest and labour at a CSA in rural New Zealand. She had begun studying towards a Permaculture Design Certificate and was committed to living a low-impact lifestyle. During a 2015 documentary project exploring simple living, she realized the extraordinary capacity of film to educate, and teamed up with Jordan Osmond in Happen Films. The pair write, direct and produce short films and more recently their new feature film, Living the Change: Inspiring Stories for a Sustainable Future. The self-taught filmmakers live in a 20sq/meter (folks that is 215 square feet) unplumbed but luxurious room on the end of a shed in a friend's 3-acre food-forest and have a passion for sharing stories that educate and inspire about how we can all live beautifully on earth. With her background in Economics, Marketing, and Media, Nathalie Markiefka worked for seven years in different industries around Europe before she changed her career path towards environmentalism. She gained experience working in an environmental NGO, holds a Permaculture Design Certificate, and is active in the Community Supported Agriculture movement, and supports her local CSA in Dublin as well as the International CSA Network Urgenci. Nathalie is interested in initiatives for building the solidarity economy as well as social farming/Ecotherapy for health and well-being. Sinéad Moran is a Trinity College Dublin Natural Science graduate with a background in research and in the NGO sector. She farms organically along with her partner on whats known as HNV (High Nature Value) Farmland and has a keen interest in how farmers can farm in harmony with the landscape, how ethical livestock production can play a role in that, and the ways in which we can re-connect to each other through food and farming. The Takeaways: Foodture, a social enterprise in Ireland, was founded by Nathalie and Sinead to address Ireland’s growing food system insecurity Foodture’s overarching goal is to reconnect people with farmers, and every action, movement, and initiative Foodture makes aligns completely with this goal The Fair Food Finder is an impressive and convenient resource for community members to research and locate local farms, producers, and eateries that source ethical, sustainable ingredients. Ireland is an extraordinary country, known for its stunning landscapes, gentle rolling hills, fields of vibrant green grass, neighborhood pubs, traditional folk music, and of course, the friendly locals. With two-thirds of Ireland’s land being dedicated to agriculture of some sort, it’s easy to assume this lush country grows exceptional sustainable produce for their residents. Despite the number of acres declared as agricultural land, only 1% of those acres are actually used for growing produce. Two proactive women, Nathalie Markiefka and Sinead Moran, noticed the growing food security problem in Ireland and founded Foodture to bring awareness to both farmers and food citizens. In addition to the alarmingly minimal number of farms producing fruits and vegetables, they recognized that there were a handful of farmers attempting to counteract this local food gap with innovative farming practices, but awareness among community members was simply lacking. They recognized a problem, and developed a solution. “Our objective is to nurture a culture of food citizenship and help build strong community support around Fair Food farmers, producers, and more in Ireland.” Foodture is shifting the culture from “food consumerism” to “food citizenship”, meaning they want individuals to be aware of where the food they purchase comes from. They encourage people to move away from placing a lazerbeam-like focus on labels like organic, local, green, natural, whole-food, or non-GMO, and focus more on whether the food was grown in a way that’s fair to animals, people, and the land. If you’re interested in how Nathalie and Sinead are changing the structure of the food system in Ireland, take some time to listen to this week’s podcast (you can also watch the full episode here). They discuss Foodture’s Fair Food Finder, which is a database that features farms, producers, and eateries that source ethical, sustainable ingredients. Foodture is creating tangible changes in Ireland’s food system. I cannot thank them enough for recognizing a problem and taking serious action to help their community and, ultimately, help the world. Check out their website for more information, articles, tips, and up-to-date news about the farming scene in Ireland. If you want to stay up-to-date with their Foodture progress, be sure to follow them on Instagram and Facebook. Thank you, ladies, for being on the show! Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guests for this episode are Nate Kleinman of Experimental Farm Network, Paul Glover the founder of Philadelphia Orchard Project, Robyn Mello of Philadelphia Orchard Project, and Kirtrina Baxter of Public Interest Law Center, recorded earlier this year at Repair the World. Today's interview is the second Philadelphia Roundtable recording and is a question and answer session with the audience. The questions result in answers that touch on the reality of how monies are allocated for projects, the impact of genetically modified foods and plant breeding on our loss of seed diversity, the importance of seed saving, poultry disobedience, and so much more. As a result of the density of this conversation, you'll find a long list of additional resources in the show notes which includes how to contact each of the panelists if you would like to follow up with any of them. All of us have gifts, talents, and abilities that can change the world. Maybe right now they aren't getting used because, as Robyn mentions, we're afraid. Or as Paul says, we have to act with civil disobedience to get there. I can't say how much you can take on or how far you can push the lines before they push back, but am here to help you discover your passion, to jump even though it seems frightening, and get your work done.
