Skyscraper-studded Dubai has been on a hot streak for the last five years—and some residents are starting to feel burned. The city-state has seen record-breaking real estate transactions as more and more people come to live there, and its state-owned airline Emirates is booking record earnings. But all that growth comes with strains for the city's population. Traffic feels worse than ever on Dubai's roads. The price of housing continues to spike even with new real estate projects being announced almost daily. Caught in the middle are both its Emirati citizens and the vast population of foreigners who power its economy—sparking rare public expressions of concern. Under Dubai's current plans, the city aims to have 5.8 million residents by 2040, adding more than half its current estimated population in just 15 years. Since 1980, its population has already soared from around 255,000 to around 3.8 million. Real estate lit the fire in Dubai's growth in 2002 when the desert sheikdom began allowing foreigners to own property. After sharp falls during both the 2008-2009 financial crisis and Dubai's brief coronavirus lockdown, prices have been soaring. Traffic has only intensified with Dubai's new arrivals. For Dubai's autocratic government, overseen by ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, possible solutions to the grinding traffic have ranged from the practical to the fanciful. The government in recent months has repeatedly encouraged companies to allow more remote work options, including in a report released in November that also suggested staggered and flexible working hours. Dubai's road toll system, known as Salik, added gates to charge drivers more and instituted surge pricing at the end of January. Dubai's Metro will also grow beyond its broadly north-south routes in a nearly $5 billion expansion. “In the coming years, residents of Dubai will be able to move around by walking, cycling, its extensive network of roads and bridges, the Metro and its new lines, water taxis, or flying taxis on specific air routes,” Sheikh Mohammed said on X in December. But for now, Dubai keeps attracting more people and more cars—and the traffic jams only get longer. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

In 2000, the daughter of Dubai's leader, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ran off to England. Though her father was seen as a progressive champion of women's rights in the Arab world, Shamsa claimed her father subjected his children to harsh punishment for disobedience. The princess was then forcibly taken from British soil by Sheikh Mohammed's men, sparking a diplomatic crisis. After spending nearly four years in prison for her own escape attempt, Shamsa's sister Latifa also fled the country in 2018 to get away from her father. Her swashbuckling, high-profile breakout made international news, but claiming she'd been kidnapped, Indian security forces captured her at sea and brought her home. From the team at The New Yorker and “In the Dark” comes “The Runaway Princesses.” Madeleine Baran and Heidi Blake report on Latifa's and Shamsa's attempts to leave Dubai, the consequences for doing so, and what's happening with the princesses today. Is Latifa now living a happy life in Dubai as she claims, or is she making those statements under duress?OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE RUNAWAY PRINCESSES" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 9 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: no tipping. The Exit Plan: Mergers and Acquisitions for Creative Entrepreneurs
Welcome to The Exit Plan, a podcast for business owners interested in learning more about selling their business. Hasan Fadlallah is the founder & CEO of Brand Lounge, the region's leading and award–winning branding consultancy. He is also the Co-Founder & Director of Fullmoon Experiments, a socially driven incubator that develops and grows purposeful startups in the region. Embodying the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to improve the Arab world through empowering communities, spreading knowledge and nurturing entrepreneurship and innovation. In this episode, Hasan shares his background in marketing and advertising where he contributed to legacy brands like Dmbnb, Darcy, Masseus, Benton, and Bowls, later acquired by Become Three. He then founded the started Brand Lounge in 2006 as a strategy-led company focused on brand creation and development. Hasan shares the roller coaster events happened within the development span of the company due to crises. The turning point was on the 2008 financial crisis, which led to a pivot in their business model, where they decided to expand the business area to Saudi Arabia. During the development stage, he incorporate their services to purpose and culture, explaining that there is no point in building a brand that resonates in people's minds if purpose isn't figured out while culture serves as a byproduct of the strategy. Hasan mentions that they became a part of a network of almost 24 operations across the globe of around 5000 people. This works by having no equity within the local operations, and no financial arrangement as well, but it's a knowledge transfer and support mechanism as a specialty. He also shares that they focus on two key elements: distinctive philosophy and growth strategy, explaining that their philosophical views are what set them apart. Brand Lounge recently acquired a small talent management firm that specializes in culture from a brand perspective, called People Mina, then integrated as Brand Lounge becoming a culture practice. The acquisition is focused on talent rather than brand names. Hasan also shares that the IP value was determined by client interest and the valuation in the acquisition was determined by considering client willingness to pay for specific IPs. It is also crucial to consider the value of cultural fit and strategic alignment when making deals. Want to know more about partnership, networking, and how to grow your business? Listen, be inspired, and be literate on how to expand a business. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: The journey to business expansion How to deal with crises Thriving not only surviving after success of your business Building internal components and methodology for brand development How does partnership and networking works globally The importance of Philosophy and Culture in integrating to business services Determining IP valuation Learnings and realizations about Hasan's journey CONNECT WITH HASAN: LinkedIn | www.linkedin.com/in/hasanfadlallah Website | www.brandloungeme.com Twitter | @hfadlallah Instagram | @hfadlallah THE EXIT PLAN The Exit Plan is for business owners that are interested in learning more about how to sell their business. In 2018, Sheikha Latifa of Dubai made a daring attempt to escape her home country. Her plan was to hide in the trunk of a car, launch a dinghy, reach a yacht, sail to India or Sri Lanka, and then fly to the United States to claim asylum. But, in the middle of the Arabian Sea, a team of armed men stormed the boat and forced Latifa back to Dubai. The commandos had been sent at the request of her father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the ruler of Dubai. The Sheikh has been praised by world leaders as a modernizer and a champion for women's advancement in the Middle East, all while subjecting Latifa and other women in his family to confinement and abuse (charges that he has denied). Heidi Blake, a staff writer at The New Yorker, spent many months reporting on what led the princess to flee, and on the consequences that she faced. She joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss the Dubai royal family's patriarchal system of control and the women who tried to break free.

Raihan always wanted to take pictures of Dubai, the architecture of the city he grew up in and fell in love with. His inspiration? None other than Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. “As soon as I saw his page which was filled with Dubai photographs, I felt connected, inspired, and motivated at the same time,” Hamid said in a conversation with City Times. “I would say I am his biggest fan,” added Raihan, who even has the Crown Prince as his phone wallpaper and hopes to meet him soon. Once Raihan found his inspiration, a normal day for him would look like this: wake up, grab the camera, and just shoot. But, of course, it was not easy for Raihan to visit the skyscrapers initially. Emirati officials revealed plans to repurpose the Expo 2020 site in Dubai that received millions of visitors between October 2021 and March 2022. At a press conference at the site's exhibition center, officials announced the property would be transformed into Expo City Dubai, an environment-friendly city housing businesses and other tenants. “Expo City Dubai will offer everyone, families, youth, students, tourists ... opportunities to experience rich, diverse, educational, fun and cultural attractions,” said Marjan Faraidooni, chief experience officer at the Expo site. The pandemic-delayed world's fair in the United Arab Emirates closed after eight years of anticipation, over $7 billion in investment, 240 million hours of labor and six months of festivities. The new city will be accessible only by pedestrians, buggies and bicycles, said Ahmed Al-Khatib, chief development and delivery officer. The pavilions of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, Brussels and others will be preserved. Al-Khatib said 80% of the existing assets of Expo 2020 will be “retained and repurposed.” The gigantic Al Wasl dome, known as the beating heart of Expo 2020 that attracted visitors including artists and heads of state, will also be preserved. Middle Eastern princesses and the abusive fathers and husbands they try to flee from.Sheikha Latifa of Dubai was drugged and kidnapped at gunpoint at her father's orders – twice! Her sister Shamsa was also kidnapped in London 22 years ago and nobody has seen her since. The stories in this episode are insane and include Indian special ops teams, yachts, a French American spy, the FBI, helicopters, private jets and hostage videos. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the vice president, prime minister, and minister of defense of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as the ruler of Dubai. Mohammed has about 30 children with several wives, and amazingly, some of these wives managed to run away and divorce him He kidnapped and imprisoned two of his daughters and tried to pressure and intimidate Princess Haya, one of his wives who managed to escape to London, as the sheikh wanted to marry their 12 year old daughter to MBS, the Saudi Crown Prince who is 37. Princess Haya won the custody battle and is happily divorced, but not entirely safe. Princess Latifa's second escape is almost like a James Bond movie and it involves French-American spy Herve Jaubert, capoeira instructor and best friend Tiina Jauhiainen, jet skis, a yacht, the FBI and the MARCOS - Indian special forces. Latifa planned this escape for 7 years but it unfortunately failed. 1, 2, 3 In this episode we also discuss the case of Princess Basmah Bint Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, 57, a businesswoman, rights activist and member of the Saudi royal family, went missing in March 2019 along with her adult daughter Souhoud Al Sharif in Saudi Arabia. It turn out they had been thrown in prison. Quatar does the same thing: Aisha Al Qahtani escaped on a family holiday in Kuwait, where she snuck away to the airport on her own to catch a 3am flight to London. She was not able to flee directly from Doha because she was not 25 years old yet, she was just 22. Qatar remains the only GCC Gulf Cooperation Council country with male guardianship laws for female travel: single women under 25 require a male guardian's consent to travel outside the country. 4 Princess Kasia Gallanio was not as “lucky”, she was found dead in her home in Marbella, Spain, after an ugly divorce and custody battle with the uncle of the Emir of Qatar, Abdelaziz bin Khalifa Al-Thani. 1. In the Middle East, Dubai is becoming a burgeoning crypto hub. The UAE Prime Minister wishes to position the UAE and Dubai as key players in shaping the global future of virtual assets. The Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority will authorise and monitor the operation and management of cryptocurrency platforms, virtual asset custody, and transfers. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE, made two major crypto-related announcements on Twitter. Aside from approving the first virtual assets law, the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority has been designated as the sector's supervisor. Dubai has recently emerged as a vital cryptocurrency hub for both investors and creators. It is worth noting that the hotspot has hosted several crypto conferences in the past year, with the upcoming Crypto Expo scheduled to take place this month. Furthermore, as the Middle East's financial capital, the UAE is the region's third-largest crypto market, trailing only Turkey and Lebanon, according to Chainalysis data from July 2020 to June 2021. The goal, according to Mohammed bin Rashid, is to "establish the UAE and Dubai's position as a key player in designing the global future of virtual assets." Meanwhile, Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, is rumoured to be interested in obtaining a licence in Dubai. Binance recently received in-principle approval from Bahrain's central bank to become a crypto service provider as part of its Middle Eastern expansion. The Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority will use the new rules to authorise and supervise the operation and management of crypto platforms, virtual asset custody and transfer, and price manipulation in space. The regulator's responsibilities will include, among other things, the protection of investor data. The announcement comes just one day after the UAE's Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) stated that a new framework will ensure AML/CFT compliance across the region. It includes reducing the risks of money laundering and terrorist financing, as well as adhering to the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) recommendations and requirements, according to the watchdog. It is worth noting that, until recently, the SCA was the sole authority in charge of supervising and overseeing virtual asset activities and services in the UAE. According to Reuters, VARA will oversee the virtual asset space in Dubai in the future, but it excludes regions within the state-owned financial free zone DIFC. According to reports, the FSA will oversee the DIFC. The DWTCA's director-general, Helal Saeed Almarri, stated that the new law and the appointment of a sector regulator will strengthen the UAE's and Dubai's position by attracting global leaders. He went on to say: "In collaboration with the Central Bank of the UAE and the Securities and Commodities Authority, the Dubai Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority will offer a full range of VA [virtual asset] services." Season 1 Finale is here, and what better way to end it than with a truly special guest that I look up to personally and have had the privilege to work with, that being: Her Excellency Dr. Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, who currently is the Vice Chairwoman of Emaar. The conversation I explore with Dr. Aisha is nothing like she's ever discussed in depth before, since we talk a lot about her upbringing, childhood and the intimate milestones that made her the person she is today. Dr. Aisha was titled as one of the world's most influential Arabs by Arabian Business Magazine (2019) and ranked as the Top 10 'Power Businesswomen' in the Middle East by Forbes in 2020 for the several prominent roles she's held throughout her 25 year career in the government, such as working as an executive for the office of HH sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.Prior to her current role at Emaar, Dr. Aisha was leading Smart Dubai, the smart city and technology arm of the government, and that's where I got the chance to work with her and witness her charismatic leadership.Dr. Aisha's active social media engagement, openness with people and advocacy towards female empowerment made her the admired influencer she is today. Some of the topics I explore with Dr. Aisha in part 1 of the conversation include:- Pressure of holding a leadership role in government as female in the early days- How honesty and openness in government are extremely important today- Why she chose technology as a field of profession back when there weren't many women in it?- Dreams that she had as a child, and were manifested- What does it really mean to work for the executive office of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE- The story of Smart Dubai and how it came about#oneday #dayone #podcast #motivationeveryday #newpodcastepisode#youtubepodcasts #podcastguest #personalgrowth #businessmindset #entrepreneurship#onedaythepodcast #Business #entrepreneur #inspiring #podcastshow #Anghami #spotify #youtube #businessadventure #inspiration #selfdevelopment #dubai #smartdubai #smartcity #smartdubaidata #data #bigdata #smartdata #dtcm #dubaitourism #ai #internetofthings #blockchain #technology #innovation #datapolicy #datastrategy #strategy #economy #digital #dubai_data #activedata #commercialdata #government #govtech #digitaldubai

In light of the sad passing of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, the regular 8@8 with David Light podcast has been replaced with a message of condolence.
Prinsessan Latifa flydde under dramatiska förhållanden från Dubai 2018. Tillsammans med en vän försökte hon nå Indien för att söka asyl. Men flykten misslyckades. The United Nations says it will address the detention of Princess Latifa, the daughter of Dubai's ruler, with the United Arab Emirates. Emirati princess Sheikha Latifa, one of the daughters of Dubai's ruler, says she is being held against her will in a barricaded villa. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum drew international attention in 2018 when a human rights group released a video she made in which she described an attempt to escape Dubai. Last March, a London High Court judge said he accepted as proved a series of allegations made by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bint Rashid Al Maktoum's former wife, Princess Haya, in a legal battle, including that the sheikh ordered the abduction of Sheikha Latifa. The sheikh's lawyers rejected the allegations. In secretly recorded videos that have now gone viral, Princess Latifa says she fears for her life. The footage prompted global calls for a UN investigation, while the UK has called the videos "deeply troubling". Journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis has written extensively about the royal family in Dubai for Vanity Fair. She spoke to ABC NewsRadio's Thomas Oriti from New York. Volgens internasionale media het Prinses Latifa in 'n geheime video haar pa daarvan beskuldig dat hy haar in Dubai gyselaar hou sedert sy in 2018 uit die stad probeer vlug het, en dat sy vir haar lewe vrees:
The only exhibition of its kind, Dubai’s Global Grad Show returns for the sixth year with 100 graduate projects from the fields of design, science, technology, and engineering, showcased in an interactive online exhibition. The ideas are the outcome of rigorous academic research conducted by graduates and their professors, reflecting areas of deepest environmental, social, or economic concern, such as the world’s aging population, the number of people living with chronic illness, the radical approaches dealing with waste and the increasing number of communities vulnerable to emergencies. Global Grad Show: Five key emerging trends The chosen projects have been organised around five key emerging trends that were identified from the 1,600 applications from 270 universities in 60 countries. Tadeu Baldani Caravieri, Director of Global Grad Show, said: “The diversity of the community of young talented researchers we bring together at Global Grad Show has many facets: they span across six continents, institutions from Ivy League to regional colleges and disciplines from bioengineering through to architecture. They do have, however, a reassuring common denominator: they investigate problems, social and environmental, that matter for everyone. This year with over 1,600 submitted student projects we have been able to map what are the most frequently occurring issues keeping these bright minds awake at night. That exercise resulted in the diagnosis of problems that are brewing at a global scale and affecting numerous communities, which we are calling Trends. These global trends, five in total, have grouped the main areas of concerns and today we present 100 projects that are, in essence, alternatives and remedies put forward by our global community of graduates whose ambition is to create a future-ready world.” Global trends to take note of : The five trends are: Living with Illness & Disability. Coping in a Complex World. Saving and Protecting Vulnerable Lives. Cleaning a Waste Filled Planet. Sustaining the Urban Experience. Projects that provide a solution to those trends include: 1. A non-invasive blood glucose ‘earring’ that tests blood sugar through radiowaves, University of Huddersfield, England. 2. A fluorescent hat for commuting children walking in the dark, Zhejiang University, China 3. An autonomous weeding robot for small-scale urban farmers, Lund University School of Industrial Design, Sweden 4. Using Durian fruit as an alternative to Styrofoam, National University of Singapore, Singapore. 5. A temperature-regulating curtain, University of Arts Berlin, Germany. 6. A device that replaces clinical sounds with colour during chemotherapy treatment, RMIT, Australia. 7. A CO2 eliminator using green bacterial technology, Unaula University, Colombia. 8. A firefighting light aircraft with a targeted foam firing bionic arm, Universidad Privada del Norte, Peru. 9. An airbag belt to cushion the elderly from falls, University of Limerick, Ireland. 10. Low-cost shoes made from recycled bottle plastics for school-girls walking lengthy distances, Mackerere University, Uganda. 11. Biodegradable food containers made of date seeds to start an economic system for date farmers to generate income, Dubai Institute of Design, and Innovation. Innovation DIDI, UAE The projects will be brought to life in an inaugural interactive digital exhibition on globalgradshow.com, giving a voice to the next generation of innovators and connecting the public and potential investors all over the world with ideas that have the potential to change lives. The virtual exhibition will showcase the graduates behind each one of the ideas and will also see prototypes, films, and original research material visually curated for online visitors to engage and interact with. The programme, now in its sixth year, and held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ...

Mariam Al Muhairi is the Head of the UAE’s Centre for the 4th Industrial Revolution and Project Manager at the Dubai Future Foundation. She joins us to discuss the UAE’s blockchain deployment case studies and learnings. She also shares some fascinating results of a survey conducted with over 100 stakeholders from more than 60 various governmental and non-governmental entities across the UAE regarding top blockchain implementation challenges and success factors. What is blockchain? Mariam likes to see things in the form of physical blocks. For her blockchain are blocks, identifiable by a unique code, that stores information, and stores who is transacting with the information. Each transaction is verified through a process that involves miners on a public blockchain which creates great security. This ultimately also helps to avoid blocks being tampered and used in a fraudulent manner. Dubai Future Foundation The UAE’s Centre for the 4th Industrial Revolution is an initiative under the Dubai Future Foundation. The Future Foundation was established in 2016 with a main mandate across five departments to look into the future of Dubai and identify trends that will benefit both the economy but also the society and other areas within the Emirates. The five departments include: Foresight and imagination – development of trends Content dissemination – the aim is to fill the gap in the dissemination of scientific and technological content in Arabic to the UAE and MENA region Capacity building – an academy where people can take courses but also a platform where experts present to the public A platform to facilitate the partnering up of startups with government entities Museum of the future is due to open next year as both a touristic attraction but also as a policymaking tool to see how people react to different ideas or different scenarios of the future UAE’s Centre for the 4th Industrial Revolution, which Mariam leads is a collaboration between the World Economic Forum and the Dubai Future Foundation. The Centre focuses on policy development for emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and precision medicine. Dubai Blockchain Strategy & The Emirates Blockchain Strategy The Dubai Blockchain Strategy, launched in October 2016 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, was the result of a collaboration between the Smart Dubai Office and the Dubai Future Foundation to continuously explore and evaluate the latest technology innovations that demonstrate an opportunity to deliver more seamless, safe, efficient and impactful city experiences. Additionally, it was about creating an industry and a market around this emerging technology as well as figure out how it could be used. The strategy establishes a roadmap for the introduction of blockchain technology for Dubai and the creation of an open platform to share the technology with cities across the globe. The Dubai Blockchain Strategy is built on three pillars of government efficiency, industry creation and international leadership. Government efficiency: under this pillar, the strategy will contribute to increased government efficiency by implementing blockchain and enabling a paperless digital layer for all applicable government services. Industry creation: this will support the creation of a blockchain industry by providing an enabling environment that encourages start-ups and businesses. Leadership: Dubai aims to lead the global thinking on blockchain technology and become the hub for blockchain intellectual capital and skill development. Since then the Dubai Blockchain Strategy was used for authoring the Emirates blockchain strategy which has more of a federal strategy. Each time the strategy is reviewed it is scaled, from Dubai to the UAE and hopefully the next time it will be outside the country and into the ME...

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the 70-year-old billionaire ruler of Dubai and vice-president of the United Arab Emirates, has been found by the High Court in London to have abducted and forcibly returned two of his daughters to Dubai, and to have conducted a campaign of intimidation against his former wife, Princess Haya. Princess Haya used to speak of a perfect family life in interviews, but cracks began to appear in 2018 when Sheikha Latifa, one of Sheikh Mohammed's adult daughters with another wife, tried to flee the UAE with the help of a former French spy and a Finnish fitness instructor. A boat carrying them was intercepted at sea off the coast of India and Sheikha Latifa was returned to Dubai. Journalists Vanessa Grigoriadis from Vanity Fair and Haroon Siddique from the Guardian have been following the story. As a passionate cyclist, him and his friend Stewart Howison started riding regularly in Al Qudra, later founding Cycle Safe Dubai. In 2018, together with another long-term friend and previous business partner, Nicholas started Zaeto, developing a product for the GCC with a core focus on the environment, alongside cost effectiveness for businesses: “While Zaeto can be generalized as a lubricants and grease company, it is so much more than that. We are impacting the environment positively, reducing harmful emissions by 40 per cent, while increasing fuel economy and lubricating parts better and more efficiently. This results in improvements in sustainability.”
