Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Dorian: I look at my superpower as a blended cocktail of perseverance, humility, and true empathy.“Funding Hope is one of the good things that came out of Covid,” says the company's founder, Dorian Dickinson. “Prior to Covid, I was doing rural development and economic development work, mostly in conflict zones and developing countries.”“When Covid hit, my business went from 100 to 0 in about 48 hours,” he says. He began thinking about how he could deploy his experience abroad here at home.“It always circled back to funding,” Dorian says. The key being, his experience showed, “funding that really hit the ground really reached the people most in need in communities that could then drive economic development activity in their community.”Success in a community doesn't stop there. “That then would expand regionally,” he says. “At the end of the day, it would create a safer, healthier, cleaner environment for all.”Today, Funding Hope is live, FINRA-registered and taking funding applications. He has a message for investors:These communities that we're working in, which are distressed, at-risk in rural zip codes across America, are ripe with potential, but they're starving for capital. This is an opportunity for us to connect everyday investors to these small business owners, entrepreneurs and innovators who are also contributing to sustainability. Our target [investors] are committed to helping achieve UN Sustainable development goals in these communities because, at the end of the day, we're going to end up with safer, healthier, cleaner communities.Dorian has developed impact in his career by deploying a triple cocktail of superpowers, perseverance, humility and empathy.AI Episode Summary* Dorian Dickinson is the co-founder and managing director of Funding Hope, a crowdfunding site targeting solutions to big problems at the community level.* Dickinson believes that crowdfunding can be a part of the solution to these problems by using investment dollars from ordinary people to address economic development challenges in distressed rural communities.* He started Funding Hope after his previous business in rural and economic development was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.* Funding Hope aims to get money into the hands of the people most in need and support small business owners, entrepreneurs, and innovators in rural areas.* The platform is vetting issuers looking to raise between $500,000 and $5 million and actively helps them target potential investors and drive funding for their projects.* Dickinson's career has taken him to conflict zones and developing countries, where he has worked on rural development projects.* One of his most memorable experiences was in Kabul, Afghanistan, where a 12-year-old boy expressed hope for a better future due to the work Dickinson was doing.* Dickinson believes his superpower is a blend of perseverance, humility, and empathy, which allow him to push through challenges, understand his limitations, and connect with the needs of others.* He advises others to step outside themselves, listen, and learn from different perspectives in order to improve their ability to help others.* To connect with Funding Hope and Dickinson, visit the Funding Hope website and sign up to receive their newsletter or become an investor. Dickinson can also be found on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. How to Develop the Triple Cocktail As a SuperpowerDorian explains how his superpowers, perseverance, humility and empathy work together:My background has given me the wherewithal to push through any difficulty or challenge and continue to pivot when necessary to see the light at the end of the tunnel, which I always hope is not a train coming at me. From there, humility gives me a clearer understanding of my strengths and weaknesses. I fully embrace my limitations and recognize that I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer. Then true empathy lets me move beyond just understanding someone's feelings to mentally connect with their needs and situation to gain a deeper insight into their state of mind and how they're acting the way that they are, and how we can improve their position to give them hope for the future.Dorian shared a story to illustrate the impact of his triple cocktail:A few years ago, before Covid, I was standing on a rooftop in Kabul, Afghanistan, with a government official from there. We had a small team with us. The work we were doing–some of it was urban work, some of it was rural work. But the man had his son with him; he was a 12-year-old boy who the father took out of school that day just so he could meet me. And the boy came up to me and said, “I just love the work you're doing here. I pray to God that you'll be successful, and you'll make the country a better place for us.”And that just stuck with me, where I put myself in his father's footsteps. I put myself being that young boy again, [feeling] what it would be like, what his life is like, and how we could make it better and what we can do to make it better. It's not bringing Western philosophy there. It's listening to them, listening to what their needs are, listening to how they would like to accomplish their goals, their ambitions, to restore that hope in what they can do moving forward in life. That stays with me every day.Dorian offers some thoughts about developing this triple cocktail of superpowers for yourself.I think everybody needs to take a step out of themselves. They need to try to put themselves in the other person's footsteps and understand where this person is coming from by listening to them. Listening is such a huge, huge attribute that people need to adopt and need to understand so that people can then share what they want, what they need so that then you can come back and you can look at how you can help guide them and help them achieve some level of success of where they want to be.Everybody has the opportunity to learn, and everybody else has that opportunity to educate someone. So, I think by taking the time to learn from somebody when you're having a conversation with somebody. Always try to leave with one or two ideas of what you've learned while you're having a conversation with them. This will make the world a whole lot better place.By following Dorian's example and advice, you can develop the triple cocktail of perseverance, humility and empathy as strengths that empower you, potentially allowing you to make them superpowers that let you do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileDorian Dickinson (he/him):Co-Founder & Managing Director, FundingHopeAbout FundingHope: FundingHope, LLC is an investment crowdfunding platform registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and as a member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). At 26, Jack McGarry thought he'd reached the zenith of his career.  Three years after he co-founded modern Irish pub The Dead Rabbit, the Lower Manhattan bar topped the list of the World's 50 Best Bars, an awards program akin to the Oscars for nightlife hospitality. McGarry had been maniacally focused on earning the title, and while it cemented him as an industry star, a sense of hollowness – exacerbated by heavy drinking – soon followed.  In the years since, however, he has abstained from alcohol and focused on The Dead Rabbit as a bar that would carry on the tradition of Irish pubs as a communal gathering space. He's also been a leading voice in highlighting mental health and education throughout the bar and restaurant industry. Those priorities will be incorporated into The Dead Rabbit's expansion, in which the company will open new locations throughout the U.S., beginning next year in Austin and New Orleans. The overarching goal is to champion authentic Irish pubs by incorporating modern art, music and other cultural elements into each bar.  In this episode, McGarry spoke about his journey as an entrepreneur, how the experience of chasing and receiving accolades made him reassess his values and how he's using his influence to spread awareness about health care and sobriety. He also discussed the ways in which he's aligning modernity and authenticity in the bar's ambience, weighed in on no- and low-alcohol spirits and cocktails and the reason that he's bullish on both, and shared why his meaning of “strategic partners” may noy be what you think. Show notes: 0:45: Jack McGarry, Co-Founder & Managing Director, The Dead Rabbit – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif met with McGarry at The Dead Rabbit in New York City, where the bar owner chatted about his distaste for tardiness and moving out of Manhattan before discussing the bar's expansion plans for 2023. He also explained how The Dead Rabbit is attempting to restore its original vision and essence, why it's important to root out the underlying issues of alcoholism, particularly within the hospitality industry and how he's using his platform to call out overindulgence and resulting problems at trade shows and conventions. Later, he discussed the evolution of non-alcoholic options at high-end bars and restaurants and why it's important to the future of hospitality, why authenticity is often misunderstood and why The Dead Rabbit has historically had low turnover among its employees. GEEQ (Geeks With EQ) is a non-for-profit with an important mission: helping women get into IT and boosting the diversity of IT companies in Australia. To this day less than 20 per cent of Australia's IT workforce are women, and this has far-reading implications, from the bias that gets built into technology itself through to the depth of innovative thinking available in the space. The two founders of GEEQ, Azadeh Khojandi and Katrin Schmidt, join us on this special podcast to discuss the work that they're doing, and the traction that diversity is getting across Australian corporate spheres. “It's important for us that we're not only bringing women into the workforce, but helping them to grow and get the promotions, more responsibilities, and the fulfilment they deserve,” Khojandi says in the podcast. GEEQ is more than an advocacy group. It focuses heavily on skills and mentoring, providing women with books on leadership and managing events to assist with knowledge transfer. On the side of advocacy, the two are focused on helping the Australian business community recognise biases in the hiring process and how to mitigate against that, Katrin says on the podcast. “It's really difficult to have awareness of your own unconscious bias,” she says. “It's like stopping and thinking to yourself, ‘what did I just do?'. The first step is a change in awareness. You don't have to jump to conclusions, but you do need to watch and be aware.” Azadeh and Katrin are sponsors at the upcoming Data Engineering Summit and will be hosting a luncheon. It will be a rare opportunity to talk directly to some of the speakers from the summit and discuss how to tackle the ongoing challenge of diversity. In the meantime, tune into this in-depth podcast, and hear from the experts about why diversity is a $60 billion opportunity for Australian businesses. What's the Secret to Sustainable and Profitable Recruitment Business Growth, with Mark Skinner, Ep #125

An ironic fact about the recruitment industry is that we have a very high attrition rate and so much churn, which can often translate into a massive drain on profit and can be an impediment to growth. My special guest, Mark Skinner, shares how they set up a work culture which has led to their recruitment team having an average tenure of more than eight years.    Mark is the Co-Founder & Managing Director of CSC Recruitment, a construction recruitment firm founded in 2005. CSC has 25 employees with 3 offices and specialist teams dealing with freelance, permanent, and executive search with a thriving international division. Mark began his recruiting career in 1998.  Episode Outline and Highlights [1:56] Why Mark started his own recruitment business. [5:52] With an average tenure of 8 years, Mark discussed how they take care of their people.  [15:29] How to set up an achievement culture for your recruitment team. [27:13] How to track and create an inventory of your team's achievements. [32:18] Best practices for taking care of your team's mental health -  how to make them feel okay to share if they are not okay. [42:05] Mark shares their greatest accomplishments [50:50] CSC Recruitment's approach to partnering with clients. [55:29] Key factor in CSC's success in winning businesses: consultative and solutions sales approach. The Key to Having An Average Tenure of Eight Years If there is a secret to having a sustainable and profitable business that grows over time, holding on to your team members - especially the ones performing well - is important. Mark and I discussed how they take care of their people leading to their average tenure of eight years. Some of the key highlights of our discussion on this topic are as follows: Having a management mindset where people come first Covering healthcare and prioritizing mental health Recognize your team's efforts with celebration and praise even on small wins The last item is a very interesting topic we covered which is about building a culture of achievement.  Building a Culture of Achievement via Company Conferences On top of hosting sales meetings six times a year to recognize top billers, Mark's company also do what they call ‘company conferences'. Over 17 years, they have done around 40 overseas trips where they take everyone. These conferences are a testament to how they value the contributions of their respective teams. The basis of where they are going or how expensive the trip is going to be will depend not only on individual achievements but also on overall group performance.   It Is Okay Not to Be Okay - Taking Care of Your Team's Mental Health Another theme that stood out in our interview is how Mark is taking care of their team's mental health. “Let's face it millions of people said it before, the stigma is about it, a lot of people don't understand it… when we found people that we think are happy go lucky… and you found out, hang on one second, they're not and you try and help them. When the business was new, we didn't have a lot of things in our toolbox,” is how Mark described how it was when they were just starting their business. Their commitment to their principle of “people come first” ensures that they have sufficient support from professionals. They made it possible for the people in their team to have someone to talk to 24/7 and if needed, therapists to give help.  What if people are not covered by their healthcare provider because of pre-existing conditions? Mark's company pay a significant amount to help that person. Today I am interviewing Gillian Harwood who is the Co-Founder/Managing Director of United Workspace Ltd and Lewes Workspace Ltd.   Gillian Harwood's career spans over 40 years. She was a pioneer of her time in the late 1970's when she undertook the mammoth task of converting an abandoned Victorian bus factory, restoring and transforming it with flair and imagination into a successful business hub for small businesses; one of the first of its kind. It was a bold and courageous move and one that earned her ‘Business Woman of the Year Award', presented to her by the late Margaret Thatcher.   Gillian shares how adversity created the opportunity for a business idea, it was the fact that her house was going to be repossessed by the bank, that the insight for 'bed sitters for businesses' (now known as co-working space) was created. And since the 1970's Gillian has gone on to create many more co-worker spaces across London and the south east, with the driving force to really help enable and empower new business to be established and grow. Recently she sold her Busworks co-working space business for £45m - a testament for her visionary leadership and entrepreneurship.   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_9k_i3EUMU   Connect with Gillian: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gillian-harwood-9b163877/ Website: https://needlemakers.co.uk/ Email: gillian@lewesworkspace.co.uk   If you want support in helping your organisation thrive, do get in contact with me: https://www.julianrobertsconsulting.com

When the first lockdowns hit in Melbourne last year, Danny Grant went from big time nightclub promoter to stacking potatoes at the markets - literally overnight. At one point, income from three of his part time jobs was being put almost exclusivity towards rent at clubs that weren't even open. Amazingly, an idea Danny had while working with mate's at the bottlo has transformed into a booming pre-mixed liquor business with distribution at over 1,000 bottle shops nationally. In this episode, Hall welcomes back Jeff Stewart, Co-Founder & Managing Director of GPO Fund. The GPO team invests in tech-driven, founder-led, North American companies that can harness Asia-Pacific public capital markets to achieve growth, business expansion, and market leadership. Historically, venture capital succeeded by investing early in companies that later went public to access growth capital, establish market leadership and provide ROI. Over the past twenty years, the U.S. IPO market has shifted focus to mega-cap listings.  Mid-sized companies now rarely attract growth capital through U.S. public offerings. Venture capital time horizons have elongated to over ten years and M&A and private equity are often the only strategic outcomes, stunting opportunities for companies to realize their full potential. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific economies and investment capital are rapidly expanding. There is a significant demand in Asia-Pacific to invest in high-growth technology companies that can expand globally and list on an APAC exchange.  Jeff is an investor, serial entrepreneur, and inventor with experience scaling technology-enabled international businesses.   Jeff began his career as a Management Consultant at Ernst & Young's Technology Practice, living on the road, advising Global 1000 financial institutions and exchanges. While still in his 20s he started his first technology company. He has since started numerous venture-backed companies, including two companies included in Inc. 500 lists of the fastest-growing companies. In 2014, Jeff's FinTech start-up was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer, and that same year, Jeff was recognized as the William F. Glaser Rensselaer Entrepreneur of the Year. Today, Jeff is a Managing Director at the Global Public Offering Fund, which he co-founded in 2018 to invest in founder-led, growth stage, technology companies.  Jeff shares with Hall what excites him now, what sectors he focuses on, some of his past experiences with startups, and some of the challenges they face. How to Hire Right? Talent search and hiring is one of the most critical issues that many organizations of all scale are facing today.
