Blending psychology, spirituality, and humor, she breaks down the stigma around asking for help and encourages listeners to embrace their human need for connection and support.Asking for Help is HealingIt's not a weakness—it's an act of strength that allows others to feel useful and connected, while giving you the support you need.Help Can Be Spiritual or PracticalWhether calling on a neighbor or St. Anthony, Cheri emphasizes that your help doesn't have to be human. Today we're going to talk about asking for help. Who do you ask? Why would you ask? When do you ask? Are you ever asking? Because asking for help actually helps the person that you're asking for help, and it doesn't have to be a person. What? Okay, let's do this.Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy.A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living. The Stress Therapist: In the real world. Finally, a place to Park. My 25 plus years of experience of.The Stress Therapist: Working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sheri Flake. The Stress Therapist: Hey, beautiful people, what's up? Okay, so me, myself, I have been in some situations where I've had to ask for help, like, really ask for help. And I think, you know, we all know that it's really kind of difficult to ask for help for most people. And that's weird because it's one love, right? We're here for each other. We're here to lift each other up. And I think we don't want to come across as a burden.I think it's a especially hard for moms who are kind of in charge of doing all kinds of things. And a while back,I made this change with my business. It was a terrible idea. My business coach told me not to do it, and I just thought I knew better than her, and I was wrong and she was right. And I had this idea that I wanted to help moms, which is a great idea, right. But I would kind of changed my business a little bit and geared it towards mom.So I was the stress therapist for moms, right? And I had like, you know, you're a rockstar mom.com or whatever. And I had, you know, a picture of me with a guitar and the kids hanging off me crying or whatever. It was really funny, unbeknownst to me was I was targeting moms that would actually need to be able to ask for help. Okay. Because, you know, of momdom. So it's one thing to say, hey, are you stressed out?Right? People can admit to that. Yes, I'm stressed out. But she said asking moms to admit they're stressed out because they're moms is going to be difficult for them to admit to that problem. And you have to admit to the problem in order to seek help, right? So she said it's kind of like having, like an erectile dysfunction group. It's going to be difficult. You know, you have to be in the very right circles, in order to get people to raise their hand in a public place and admit to that problem. Because there's a stigma against that. You know, that's why there's Mommy Loves Vodka and, you know, all these, you know, coping or scary mommy or whatever. Like there's all these. These entities that talk about how hard it is to be a mom.And it's just now getting to be, you know, sort of an open conversation. So I. I think moms in general aren't supposed to ask for help. Women aren't supposed to ask for help. We're supposed to do all these things, I think, in general feel, you know, like it might be hard to ask for help. And I remember a long time ago, I heard, I think it was Mother Teresa, I'm not sure, but I think someone had asked her about people asking for money on the side of the street or, you know, people that were panhandling. And she said something like, you know, asking for help should be enough reason to help them. Just simply asking for it. Right? Like that. That in and of itself is such a big deal that when someone does ask for help, you know, that should be enough. They shouldn't have to give all these reasons why, what they're going to do with the money. They have signs or whatever. The simple fact that they're out there struggling and asking for help is all that you need in order to help them. And that really resonated with me. And I've had a couple of instances here lately in my life in the past five years where I have had to ask for a lot of help. And it was uncomfortable. And I learned so much from just asking for help that I want to share with you so you can kind of get some ideas on when to ask for help, who to ask for help.It doesn't even need to be a person, and we'll get into that. But a long time ago, when my husband was diagnosed with cancer, he had to undergo this massive surgery with a really long recovery. And I've talked about it before in previous podcasts, but, you know, he's, you know, had a feeding tube and only liquid diet and then soft and it just, it lots

The episode closes with a meditation on the sacred sound Om, guiding listeners into stillness and self-acceptance.~Authenticity is magnetic. When you show up as your real self—quirks, passions, weirdness and all—you attract the right people and create true connection.~Faking it is exhausting and unsustainable. Stop procrastinating, stay motivated while we work on healthy habits, like meditation and happy living. So expect stress tips, lots of ways on how to get meditation into your life for real. And for good, a little bit of science, a little bit of woo and [00:01:00] a big sense of humor. You deserve this. Believe me. It's free. So relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now.epi-6-who-cares-who-ya-gonna-be_1_07-30-2024_185207: Hey, beautiful people. What's up? Okay. So today it's super rainy and that's why my hair looks terrible. Who cares? Who really cares? Cares in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? And I think sometimes we use this in ways that, doesn't help at all. And sometimes we use this expression or this idea in ways that help a lot. Like if you tell me when I have a hangnail that, you [00:02:00] know, someone else doesn't have a finger. I don't think that necessarily helps. That never makes me feel better. It's kind of like when people say, Yeah. Do you ever hear people say this, if it makes you feel any better, and then they launch into a story where they were, you know, more down and out than you are right now. Now, I don't know about you, but that never makes me feel better. Why would someone else's misfortune make me feel better? But anyway, I digress, baby. I do, because here's the thing. It doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, what goes down in your life. So that means That it all matters. What am I talking about? First of all, pick up the book, 4, 000 weeks this guy is a New York times writer who was writing this productivity column and had this epiphany that Emptying out his email, which never works by the way, because as soon as you clear the decks, it's all right back there again in like five minutes.Right. So it's never really done. [00:03:00] And that we're all spending all kinds of times trying to get things done for what, for who? Like, so our worth is connected to our productivity. Hell no, no way, man. That is lame as it could be. And he's thinking. You know, all the books say I shouldn't let my baby fall asleep on my chest because it could affect her ability to sleep later. What have you ever had a baby fall asleep on your chest? It's amazing. Why are we listening to what other people tell us is important to accomplish, do or be in our lives for one second? I mean, I was watching the Olympics the other day with my family, and of course the only thing I want to watch is gymnastics because I was super into gymnastics when I was little and I'm sitting there with my daughter and my husband of almost 20 years, almost 20 years.I know. Can you believe that this November? 20 years, baby. And I say, yeah, because I was so into gymnastics and they're like, when were you into gymnastics? And I'm like, [00:04:00] And they're like, yeah, we never knew that you were into gymnastics. I'm like, are you kidding me? I mean, I was amazing. Okay. Level of difficulty. It's no Simone Biles. I get it. But I was still like getting like 8. 2 on the beam. I once got, , I think I got like, I placed somewhere on vault in the state. I mean, I was killing it, but I had to make a decision. Was I going to be like a coral airhead, which is my friend, me and Megan Lariola used to call us.Coral airheads that were really into theater and really into choir. Or was I going to go the gymnastics route and I had to choose one, right? But it came very naturally to me. I absolutely loved it. It was super duper fun. I'm super short. But again, who cares? Who cares? Because then I called my mom and said, can you believe that? My husband and my daughter don't even know that I was into gymnastics and she's like, what gymnastics? I didn't know you were into gymnastics. And I'm like, what I did for like two years. Then I hear my dad in the background say something like, yeah, I was at all your meets, like laughing and [00:05:00] joking around as if I'm making it up.My point is people, my point is for two years, I was super into the sport and no one remembers nobody. Okay. It didn't make one difference except to me. It made a difference to me, and that's where the difference is. It's for you. In a couple of generations, I'm sorry, but no one's probably going to know you even walked on this earth. So who are you going to be rather than see this as an excuse to be depressed and down? See it as an oppo

Through anecdotes, personal reflection, and meditation, the episode urges self-discovery, authenticity, and living life for oneself rather than for validation from others.~Your Life's Meaning Comes from Within – The things that truly matter are the ones that resonate with you personally, not what society dictates as important.~Quiet Reflection Reveals True Desires – Taking time to reflect through meditation or deep thought helps uncover who you are and what truly brings you joy.~Stop Seeking External Validation – Life is short, and worrying about how others perceive you is unproductive; instead, focus on doing what makes you genuinely happy.~Meditation Music byhttp://sonicyogi.comhttps://open.spotify.com/track/7lpLx4vtoQusvoqidRY6vN?si=0db8efd9082c40ebhttps://open.spotify.com/track/0Qotx90teY3iZ00PgUCwty?si=44a1c18c52e24e1fListen to Sonic Yogi on: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2xJT8mRbrqa7rTY6d4y5Fq?si=q2YYpPSzQOmu4R8-W4jkpw https://music.apple.com/us/artist/sonic-yogi/722350162https://amazon.com/music/player/artists/B00FQMVVIC/sonic-yogi?marketplaceId=ATVPDKIKX0DER&musicTerritory=US&ref=dm_sh_Y5q68A8LSQQGzl01PQC7Uaw6chttps://youtu.be/p2jtMEkdh6g?si=rVq-Q8o85mI75S4_INTERESTING MENTIONS:https://open.spotify.com/artist/1McMsnEElThX1knmY4oliGhttps://www.amazon.com/Four-Thousand-Weeks-Management-Mortals/dp/0374159122Chopinhttps://www.heartwood-retreats.com : location for Cheri's Georgia Mountain Retreatshttps://www.jekyllisland.com: Location for Cheri's seaside retreatThe Host for this podcast: Cheri Augustine Flake, LCSW The Stress Therapist and AuthorJoin Cheri Flake on her Next Meditation And Yoga Retreat!https://thestresstherapist.com/retreats/or https://thestresstherapist.com/beach-retreats/Love the show? Please rate and review us!Send some love bucks to the show:Paypal: cheri@thestresstherapist.comVenmo: @cheri-flakeThank you!https://thestresstherapist.com/contact/ and be a part of the Stress Therapy Community!Twitter: @stresstherapy Instagram: @thestresstherapist https://www.facebook.com/cheriaugustineflake https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheri-augustine-flake-719b044 https://thestresstherapist.com/https://thestresstherapist.com/ https://www.youtube.com/user/thestresstherapist Join Cheri Flake on herhttps://thestresstherapist.com/retreats/  https://thestresstherapist.com/retreats/ in the gorgeous Georgia Mountains and walk away with a new, solid daily meditation practice with benefits that last a lifetime!ORhttps://thestresstherapist.com/beach-retreats/ on Jekyll Island seaside right off the coast of Georgia.Want Cheri Flake to be your therapist? And if you live to be 30, you probably have 20 or 50 reasons to commit suicide. Really. But, , that's why everything matters. Everything you do matters who you decide you're going to be matters. It all matters so much.So relax. And settle in and listen up because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now.Hey, beautiful people. I'm the stress therapist and it's time for some stress therapy.Yes. I teach people how to get better at stress. See it as an opportunity to be whoever you are. You only got 4, 000 weeks on this planet, man, side note, that's the point of his bo

In this episode, the Stress Therapist explores the importance of focusing on our inner well-being as much as our outer appearance. The episode highlights how our egos often prioritize external traits, but true fulfillment and peace come from cultivating a healthy inner self. The discussion also touches on the benefits of practices like yoga and meditation in promoting both inner and outer wellness.~Inner vs. Outer Work: The importance of balancing efforts to improve external appearance with nurturing your internal well-being.~Ego and Judgment: Understanding how our egos influence our perceptions and how we can manage judgment to grow~Mindfulness Practices: The power of meditation and yoga in enhancing emotional resilience, health, and overall happiness.~Meditation Music byhttp://sonicyogi.comhttp://sonicyogi.comhttp://sonicyogi.comhttps://open.spotify.com/track/7lpLx4vtoQusvoqidRY6vN?si=0db8efd9082c40ebhttps://open.spotify.com/track/0Qotx90teY3iZ00PgUCwty?si=44a1c18c52e24e1fListen to Sonic Yogi on: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2xJT8mRbrqa7rTY6d4y5Fq?si=q2YYpPSzQOmu4R8-W4jkpw https://music.apple.com/us/artist/sonic-yogi/722350162https://amazon.com/music/player/artists/B00FQMVVIC/sonic-yogi?marketplaceId=ATVPDKIKX0DER&musicTerritory=US&ref=dm_sh_Y5q68A8LSQQGzl01PQC7Uaw6chttps://youtu.be/p2jtMEkdh6g?si=rVq-Q8o85mI75S4_INTERESTING MENTIONS:The personal anecdote about a high school experience and the realization about appearance versus essenceA powerful text from a listener showing the positive impact of meditation on their life.https://www.heartwood-retreats.com : location for Cheri's Georgia Mountain Retreatshttps://www.jekyllisland.com: Location for Cheri's seaside retreatThe Host for this podcast: Cheri Augustine Flake, LCSW The Stress Therapist and AuthorJoin Cheri Flake on her Next Meditation And Yoga Retreat!https://thestresstherapist.com/retreats/or https://thestresstherapist.com/beach-retreats/Love the show? Please rate and review us!Send some love bucks to the show:Paypal: cheri@thestresstherapist.comVenmo: @cheri-flakeThank you!https://thestresstherapist.com/contact/ and be a part of the Stress Therapy Community!Twitter: @stresstherapy Instagram: @thestresstherapist https://www.facebook.com/cheriaugustineflake https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheri-augustine-flake-719b044 https://thestresstherapist.com/ https://www.youtube.com/user/thestresstherapist Join Cheri Flake on herhttps://thestresstherapist.com/retreats/  https://thestresstherapist.com/retreats/ in the gorgeous Georgia Mountains and walk away with a new, solid daily meditation practice with benefits that last a lifetime!ORhttps://thestresstherapist.com/beach-retreats/ on Jekyll Island seaside right off the coast of Georgia.Want Cheri Flake to be your therapist? I'm so happy to be with you. Today. We're going to talk about what can we do to make ourselves well on the inside. Like, we do so many things to make sure that we're looking good and that we're feeling good on the outside. But what about the inside? Isn't that the one that really counts? So relax and settle in and listen up, because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now.Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress. For people living in the real world. Finally, a place to Park.My 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherry Flake.Hey, beautiful people, how are you? Today we're going to talk a little bit about working on your outside versus working on your inside, which may actually be more important. But our ego is always tricking us into thinking that the outside side is more important or the most important thing when I'm not so sure that's true.Right. I remember one time I was in high school, and I'll never forget this. This guy, like, really put me in my place, man. I was pretty devastated. Here I am, you know, a thousand years later, talking about it, but I was coming into a classroom and the teacher said, how long does it take you to get ready for school? And I don't remember what my answer was. An hour, 45 minutes, whatever. I was in high school. I had a lot of hair. A lot of hair. There was. There was a lot of hair involved.Okay, it was the 80s.I think I said like an hour or something. I don't remember what I said. But he said,is that how long it takes you to get ready for school, or is that how long it takes you to look the way you want to look for school? What? Okay. Besides showing how very unsophisticated and naive I was when I was in high school, because this was such a poignant point for me, I never even remotely considered it.I think it's something that we need to visit. I think we spend a lot of time working on our outsides. You know, we have to make sure that our hair is pink. And, you know, today I'm wearing my cheap chick T shirt. You know, let everybody know that I went to Cheap Trick and I love them, and I went to the concert. It was amazing. And what does that say about me? Right? That's what our egos are so obsessed with, like, who am I? Like, am I a woman? Am I more feminine? Am I a mother, a daughter, a sister? You know, and I'm also like a mom and I'm a friend, and I'm also all these different roles, and we kind of tweak our personality as we sort of fit into our personal reality. And that's how we shape our egos. That's what our egos are. It's who we are. And our ego is obsessed with how we're being perceived by other people. And I was at this cocktail party once with my husband, and I arrived late.I met him there late, you know, with this other couple at this table. And I walked up and apologized for being late. And the woman of this couple said, don't worry, because I don't ever judge.I never judge people. And I was like, whatever. I'm judging you right now. That's not. That's not true. Because it's not. I mean, come on. I mean, there's a part of our brain that is reserved for judgment. It's so we don't do anything stupid. It's so we don't trust that person again. It's so we don't walk down an alley that looks like that again. If we were robbed the last time we went down, it.I mean, it's for safety precautions, but. And yeah, the system doesn't always work because you might not trust someone who looks like someone that you didn't trust before, and they're two different people and who cares? And it's not the same thing or whatever, but we're supposed to fit into a tribe of sorts. We're supposed to want to be accepted by a group so we can fit in.Because I think our primitive minds kind of know that we. We just can't do this all by ourselves. We need one another. And so that judgment is there. It's just there. Now, I do think it's lovely if you can, like Malcolm Gladwell, that. That **** out, you know, and like, notice when you're judging and you can change it. Absolutely. I mean, awareness is key, however,to think that you're never going to be judging or that's a goal. I just don't know how practical that is. I think instead, when you notice that your ego identity is judging something, that you jump in and that you're able to notice that and change it, you know, just like anything else. But I was really judging her for that anyway. We've all been tricked by someone's outsides anyway. They don't really tell the whole story on the inside. I don't know about you, but I keep falling for.My sister would never do this either. She is so intellectually savvy. As far as this goes, I have a friend who's friends with my friends. I don't know her that well, but every time I see her, because she is beautiful. She is like the quintessential, like, what an American woman is supposed to look like. And the skinny and the beautiful and the skin and the hair and all the things and the body and the clothes and the.Everything. I mean, she's just, she's drop dead gorgeous. There's no doubt about it. It's not even a judgment. Like, she really is beautiful. And so I always erroneously think she's going to be nice to me.And she, she's not. She's

It's super cool.[01:54] But first, I kind of want to hear your story. Tell us about you. You had this spiritual awakening.[01:59] Tell us about that experience and what brought you to creating the Love Tuner.[02:04] Sigmar Berg: Yeah, it was interesting because I come from a very different industry, so it was never in the mindfulness industry. I always had an open heart, if you want to call it.[02:14] I was not outgoing. I did not talk about my spirituality.[02:19] When I was a teenager, I was always an artist, so I became an architect. But back in the days, I was painting a lot, and my paintings had, like, really deep spiritual messages without me even understanding what I was painting.[02:33] And so I had this connection, but I was not necessarily outspoken. I did go to any retreats or whatnot.[02:42] And then later on when I already read. So I'm originally from Austria, and. And I relocated to the states, like, nearly 20 years ago. And when I arrived here, I started consciously meditating, like, a year into it.[02:55] And I did it, I would say, like, with a big discipline. And this Helped me, you know, like in a foreign country and not. And I love America and everything, but I was still like, you know, like, I just moved here.[03:07] I was working before in New York, back and forth to Europe. But then really living here was also this adjustment of my industry was fashion. So a lot of fake stuff.[03:17] And my grounding became actually my meditation. So my morning whatever, surf or running on the beach and then sitting down and meditating. And I did this with it with a big discipline.[03:27] And when I got introduced to this frequency, 528Hz didn't mean anything to me. I had. I had no understanding about it. And I did this guided meditation was a breath work meditation.[03:41] And I have to say it was the deepest meditation I ever had. And this was just with the frequency in combination with breath work. And this was what literally like hooked me to this frequency.[03:53] And then the rest was. Yeah, a good friend of mine, we teamed up and we develop this tool.[04:02] And this tool is so easy because everything what I experienced in the sound meditation, breathwork meditation, what took 50 minutes, I have it right here.[04:13] And that's the cool thing. So where were you, though?[04:16] Stress Therapist: How did you hear it? What happened?[04:18] Sigmar Berg: So we did it through speakers. So first of all, people need to know that the 520Hz frequency, you need to really make sure that you listen to the correct frequency. Because our musical scale is actually manipulated so we don't hear the pure tone.[04:33] So always be careful when you listen to 520 hertz that you know where you're getting it from.[04:38] It should be the pure tone from some apps. They really have the pure tone. Be careful on YouTube stuff and everywhere where they literally play with the frequency. But what I recognize is in the way I did it was with speakers.[04:54] So we have been like really big speakers and the frequency was running in the background.[04:59] The person that did the meditation helped us with breath work to go in the deeper state of meditation. And this was exactly the combination what it is.[05:10] And I have to say, my love tuning basically became my meditation. Because would we always say that love tuna makes meditation easy? Yes. It does it. Because it's very easy to get into it.[05:23] Because the tone guides you.[05:25] Stress Therapist: It does. It is. I was pretty surprised by that, actually.[05:29] Sigmar Berg: Yeah.[05:30] And so. And this is like. But you can go as deep as you want. You know, it's not like, oh, oh. It's something for beginners to get into meditation. But when you follow this frequency, it opens up so many portals.[05:43] You can go so dee

So all those encyclopedias, they're all at your fingertips now. If you want to know something, you don't have to argue about it over dinner all night.[00:09] You can simply find out and usually in a few seconds. It's crazy, but is it good for us? How can we manage this information age? All of this info? Do we need to know every **** thing?[00:23] Let's talk about it. So relax and settle in and listen up, because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now.[00:44] Hey, beautiful people, it's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to Park.[00:54] My 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sheri Flake.[01:18] Hey, beautiful people, what's up? Okay, so I am a proudly Gen X person, okay? And I gotta tell you, it's been very interesting to be someone who had practically no technology whatsoever besides learning how to, like, work the hose.[01:34] I think I drove a car and, like, you know, I had to use my little push lawnmower. That was like the most technology that I used when I was little.[01:42] I did have a tape recorder machine that I really liked. You know, I made the mixtapes off the radio.[01:50] That really was about it. When I got older, I got really into, you know, microphones and singing and that type of thing to be in a band. And, you know, I kind of eased into having like a little synthesizer that I could record, but pretty much went from having no technology at all to every single thing you could possibly imagine.[02:07] And AI, which in and of itself is really kind of a super cool thing if you get to know it a little bit and see its limitations as well as its benefits.[02:18] But it's been interesting to watch this go down. Now my kids think I'm a boomer, which I am not. Okay? They say that just because I might not be as tech savvy heavy because I wasn't brought up on it, I wasn't born with it, right?[02:30] And I think we got to be careful with this, especially with our kids, because we don't really know what the ramifications are, it's going way faster than we are, right?[02:38] Our little bodies are, like, not catching up, and our brains are definitely don't know what to do with all this abundance of knowledge. So how can we protect ourselves? Like, yeah, when we're on the phone, we gotta watch the dopamine Hits and everything.[02:51] And we know that Instagram and all these social medias and Facebook and YouTube and all these places are really using these really sophisticated algorithms to steal our attention, to make us buy things, just to keep us on doing the same thing.[03:05] And I watch myself do it and I'll say to myself, oh, my gosh, I want to stop, you know, learning about this supplement, or I want to move on from how to decorate this type of table or whatever it is that I'm getting all wrapped up in.[03:20] And. And then I usually get stuck on comedies, right? Like, I'll sit and listen to comedians, and I just can't stop. Here comes the next joke. Here comes the next joke.[03:28] I totally get it. I don't think it has anything to do with us. I think it has to do with that they have figured out how the human brain works.[03:35] And, like, when I tell my kids, you know, you gotta be careful of this, I think they're like, well, I'm just like everybody else. And that's okay. I'm saying everybody else is falling victim to this screen scrolling and getting stuck there.[03:48] And it doesn't matter if you're aware of it logically, you're still kind of stuck in it. You know what I mean? And then there's the idea that if I want to know something, I can look it up immediately.[03:58] So, like, a long time ago, when I was trying to teach my kids about, you know, that ick feeling online, like, sometimes, you know, if you know you're going down a road where you might not want to see something, you can't unring that bell, right?[04:09] So one time I'm going to mention this here. I'm giving a trigger warning if you're afraid of spiders. Fast forward through this, okay? Like, I will make this less than a minute, but I saw a spider and I don't like spiders.[04:22] Spiders scare me, okay? It doesn't affect my life in a daily living. So I don't see it as, like, a simple phobia or anything. But I will try to avoid them.[04:29] Usually they gross me out. I saw a spider and it was really big and it was really scary and it was in a toilet. And I saw it on a Facebook feed where you could just, like, you go to Facebook and you can just scroll down and scroll down.[04:42] Now, since then, I've gotten Facebook Eradicator, which is this thing on your laptop where when you go to Facebook, all that comes up is like a quote from Jesus or the Buddha or something like that.[04:52] So you're not Getting stuck there, right? You have to go to someone's page if you want to see it. You can still see everything you

It's the easiest, simplest thing.[00:14] It's so good for you. And I'm gonna tell you exactly what it is. So relax and settle in and listen up, because your stress therapy session is about to begin.[00:39] Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to Park.[00:48] My 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sheri Flake.[01:03] Foreign.[01:13] Hey, beautiful people.[01:14] How's your beautiful self?[01:15] The Stress Therapist: Okay, so today we're going to talk about the simplest thing. It's so simple. It's easy, breezy, lemon squeezy on how to get your life to be a little bit different, a little bit better.[01:27] Help your brain be healthier, help your goals get met faster, and definitely wipe out some stress. Okay, so here's the deal.[01:37] My friend Bill O'Hanlon, I mean, this guy is a badass. First of all, not only has he written like 2,000 songs in like two years or something, like, he's something crazy.[01:45] He's written over 40 books, okay? He is a super badass friend of mine. He's great. I was certified in hypnotherapy a long time ago, and Bill O'Hanlon actually taught me the Milton Erickson sort of hypnotherapy ways, and it's far superior than what I learned first.[02:02] And he's just super smart. He does all of these great classes online. I don't know if he's still doing them because he's writing all these songs, but he. He wrote one book called Do One thing different and I'll put it in the show notes.[02:14] And I mean, my friend Bill, he hit the mother load, man. I mean, Oprah picked it up, loved it, and slam, bam, thanks, ma'am. All of it. He just hits the big time, right?[02:25] And everybody wants a little piece of this book. And what's cool about this book is he's got 40 books. He's got tons of books. I've read tons of his books.[02:32] He's a great, super smart guy. But what's great about this book is that it's very, very accessible. It's super duper simple. And, you know, I love that, right? And so what he says is the whole book is called Do One Thing different.[02:45] And I'm going to kind of summarize it here, but definitely pick it up if you want, or one of the myriad books that he has written. And what's great about this book is all he says is you start by doing exactly that one thing different.[02:56] So what does that mean? It means instead of walking in the grocery store and immediately turning right, what if you turned left? Okay. What if the next time you picked up your toothbrush, you did it with your non dominant hand?[03:12] Okay. What if you flossed before you brushed? What if you put your socks on before your pants? What if you meditated before you looked at your phone? You know what I'm saying?[03:23] Like you're just doing the littlest, teensiest, tiny thing. What if you put your right shoe on before your left shoe or whatever, whatever you normally do. What if you just changed one little thing?[03:34] Why would we do this? Why would we do this? Well, first of all, when you interrupt patterns, whether they're negative or positive or whatever, you create flexibility in your mind.[03:46] You reduce the tendency to be stuck in ruts, okay? And when you do it often enough, you enhance neuroplasticity in your brain, which means the ability for your brain to change, you can change.[03:59] It's not true. The old dogs new trick things, that stuff's not true. You can change. So your brain is super adaptable and it's constantly rewiring itself and this creates new neural connections, okay?[04:12] And then you're able to learn quicker. You get all of these cognitive benefits, these problem solving skills. You're quicker at stuff, you learn things better. It's new ways of thinking and a better mood, reduced stress, all that stuff.[04:26] Right? Okay, but what the big money idea is, let's say that you decide to do this right? And you're like, okay, I can do that. That's no big deal. I mean, I really want you.[04:33] That's your homework. You're supposed to do this. Okay? I want you to try it and tell me how you did. But let's say that you did it over and over and over again, which is often my message here about, you know, you know.[04:44] Well, there's two messages really. The idea that Bill is pointing out here is going to be clear in about a minute. So New Year's Eve means different things to different people. You might be geared up, ready to go tomorrow, your whole life is going to change. Or you're like, forget it.[00:10] I never do New Year's resolutions. It's over. There's a happy middle. There's a medium. There's a gray area that you can live in happily. And I'm going to show you all about it today.[00:21] So relax and settle in and listen up, because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now.[00:42] Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to park my 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field.[00:57] And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sheri Flake.[01:16] Hey, beautiful people, what's up? Okay, we're going to talk about New Year's resolutions. Do not hang up. Do not turn this off. Do not walk away. Give me a chance to show you how New Year's resolutions can not only work, but they can actually be fun.[01:32] Okay. The way that we've been going about New Year's resolutions, you're absolutely right. If you've given up on them or if you're like, gung ho, but, like, secretly know that by, like, January 20th, you're going to be miserable and sad and feel bad about things.[01:45] You're probably in your 20s, but if you're older than that and you have lost a little bit of hope, it's only because you've been going about it all wrong. The way that we've been brought up to think about New Year's resolutions is just weird.[01:58] Like, first of all, we think that something Magical happens on January 1st. Nothing magical happens on January 1st. You will not magically be someone who runs two miles three times a week.[02:08] If you are not running at all right now, that is the same thing as saying, I am going to be playing Jimi Hendrix licks on January 1st this year, even though I have never picked up a guitar.[02:19] It's not reasonable. Even though your body could physically do it, it won't do it for long. You will be injured. You will have your brain talking. You're out of it.[02:28] Your ego will get all riled up and you will stop doing it, and you will not feel good about it. And after about 20 or 30 years of that, you're going to be like, I'm not doing it anymore.[02:39] However, there are some really Cool ways to make New Year's resolutions work for you and to make them fun. I mean, come on, let's think about this. Let's seriously think about New Year's resolutions for a second.[02:50] They are ridiculous. I talk about them on radio, I talk about them on tv. People have me on their shows talking about it all the time. The first thing you need to do is rethink what a New Year's resolution is.[03:02] Okay, first of all, it starts on an arbitrary day. I do not care what anyone thinks is happening on January 1st. There is nothing magical that day. There might be something magical in the stars or in the skies or how the planets lining or something like that, but you might have better luck looking into that.[03:20] Those types of facts where the stars are, how the seasons are working, whatever your horoscope, rather than just by going by January 1st. Okay, like it is just a day you can start.[03:33] Like with my clients who are learning how to meditate every day. I was talking to a client yesterday and we were talking about how she was going to add a minute or 30 seconds to her practice so she can ease up and move up the timing on how long her practice is.[03:50] You want to do that very gradually. So we only do it at 30 second, 30 second intervals sometimes or 1 minute intervals over long periods of time. So your brain sort of allows.[03:59] It doesn't really notice it's happening. And we decided that we would always do those on Fridays. Okay? So the idea of starting something new on a Friday doesn't seem like that big of a deal.[04:10] Starting something new on Monday all of a sudden feels like pressure. It feels, feels different on January 1, on Monday, after the holidays. Quote, after the holidays. Oh my gosh.[04:20] Why are we putting so much pressure on ourselves after the holidays? If do you think some magical time slot is going to open up after the holidays? When people say, hey, let's get together after the holidays, I'm like, what are you doing right now?[04:31] What are you doing today? What are you doing tomorrow? Are you going to eat lunch? I mean, come on, after the holidays? I mean, if some magical huge time slot opens up after the holidays, you are going to Puerto Rico.[04:41] You are not going to catch up on this and watch this show and call this person and all this stuff. I mean, come on, let's be realistic. So all that aside, all that crazy old school thinking aside, let's think new, let's be different, let's decide that instead of New Year's Eve or New Year's Day or the whole year or

So it's Christmas time and whether or not you celebrate a holiday this time of year, it's hard to ignore that there is a lot of good, juicy loving kindness and beautiful juju coursing through the ether right now.[00:18] Let's take advantage of that and listen to a classic stress therapy episode, loving kindness during Christmas time. Relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy classic edition is about to be begin right now.[00:48] Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to park my 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field.[01:03] And now your host, host me, the stress therapist, Sherry Flake.[01:22] Okay, y'all, I can't believe it. Beautiful people. But here we are. And we have been together 100 times. Can you believe it? It's so exciting. 100th episode, here we are.[01:34] And I think it's a really cool time. Whether you're Christian or not, whether you're celebrating some sort of religious holiday this month or holiday season or not, it's always a beautiful, wonderful time because a lot of people are and there's a lot of love in the air.[01:49] To examine the idea of one love, that we are all one love, that with respect to value, we are all exactly the same. We come from the human race. We come from this beautiful, beautiful earth.[02:03] And when we think about our sameness rather than our differences, things look better, we feel better. If I was able to open up your body and take out your beautiful soul, it would fill up the entire universe and more.[02:17] It would fill up galaxies and galaxies and light years and light years. That's how valuable and beautiful and lovely that you are. And you share that with all these other people.[02:28] And there is an opportunity here to feel connected rather than feel separate. To feel love rather than feel hate, to feel peace rather than feeling discord. And it's an awesome opportunity to be in the very moment that you're in because it is so beautiful.[02:47] And every single moment is a gift. And I know how cheesy I sound right now, and I don't even care because it's so good and it's so loving and it's filled to the top with juicy.[02:59] And if you want some of that, then you're going to have to spend some time in the sweet, sweet stillness. Paramahansa Yogananda said, live in the present. Launch yourself on every wave Find eternity in each moment.[03:14] The future will take care of itself. You don't have to worry about it. You don't have to change it. You just sit in your loving, beautiful present moment, this beautiful stillness, and you can find your future in being in the present.[03:32] Because nothing's going to happen in the future. It's all going to happen right now. And nothing ever happened in the past. It happened all right now, and you don't want to miss it.[03:41] And sometimes during this time of year, people say, oh, I can't believe it's crazy, you know? You know, this is one of my pet peeves. I can't believe it's Christmas.[03:47] I can't believe it's the holidays again. I can't believe it's the new year again. I can't believe 2023 is over. Whatever.[03:53] Maybe you can't believe it, but the reason why you can't believe it is because you're not spiritual spending any time in it. You're thinking about next week or this holiday party or this gift you need to get, or that person you need to acknowledge or this thing you need to do, or that cocktail dress you need to buy or whatever, rather than being in the very moment you're in.[04:12] And there is a juicy loveliness in doing that. And one of the ways that I like to think about how we can remember how we're all exactly the same, even though we don't think we are, okay, we all think we're extra special, extra horrible in some way, right?[04:25] Because we're attached to these ego identities.[04:28] But one of the ways is this cool hypothetical question. And the question is this. Imagine that you don't know anything about yourself. You don't know your age. You don't know if you're young or old.[04:39] You don't know if you live in the north or South. You don't know if you live urban or rural area.[04:45] You have no idea. You don't know how you look. You don't know if you're black or white or brown or man or woman or child or baby. You have no idea if you had to choose, though, who or what you might support based only on what you think is right.[05:05] Who or what do you think you would choose? And why Changes things a little, right? You don't know if you're rich or poor.

What's up? So there is just so much that's a drag, right? Like, ugh. I mean, I don't want to do this. I'm dreading that. What about this? Oh my gosh, the world, it's going to ****.[00:13] Help. What can we do? There is something that you can do and I'm going to talk about it today. So relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy session is about to begin.[00:24] Right.[00:39] Hey, beautiful people, it's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally a place to Park.[00:49] My 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherry Flake.[01:12] Hey, beautiful people. Okay, so we talk all the time about how to feel good, how to feel better, how to feel amazing, how to do all these things. And of course I'm always telling you to meditate because I think it's better for you than water people.[01:25] So good for you.[01:27] And of course you'll be feeling good if you do that, but sometimes it's just hard, you know what I mean? Like you're just feeling down, have the blahs, you know, there's so many things grabbing our attention, our focus, you know, everything's overwhelming, it's daunting.[01:42] You could be dreading things.[01:44] How can we feel good about our work? How can we feel good about our play? How can we feel good about just the day to day things? Cleaning the kitchen, making the bed, being around family members.[01:58] You know, that can get tough as everyone gets older and changes in their needs change and their moods change and their attitudes change about things. Feeling good about your relationships, your marriage, your friendships, your neighbors, how can you feel good about things?[02:15] Well, I'm always telling you, of course, to meditate, but also to keep an eye on what you're thinking about, right? And if you want to get knee deep into that, you can look at the podcast that I did, how I know the woo woo is true.[02:28] True. And yes, definitely you're going to feel better if you are monitoring your thoughts, if you're aware of what you're thinking, if you're changing the way you think about things.[02:37] However, here's a really easy way to change the way that you're feeling about things. Now, I'm going to use this as an example. A long time ago I was reading this book.[02:48] It's an excellent book. Now I did hear that it might be on, like, itunes or. It's not called itunes anymore. Sound like a boomer, right? It's called Apple tv. That's what it's called.[03:01] And there's. Think it's on there. Shanta Rum.[03:04] And it is based on a true story. It's an amazing story. It's an unbelievable book. I can't remember the name of the guy. Gregory something. I'll also put that in the show notes.[03:15] But this book is amazing. And he talks about his experiences of breaking out of a Turkish prison, you know, pretending to be a doctor, pretending to be a mafia guy.[03:24] I mean, like, this guy does amazing things. It's a great novel. It's a great story. However, there's a page in the book, and I think it's only one page that I read over and over and over again.[03:36] Now, in the book, what's happened is he's fallen in love with a friend, and she doesn't know that he loves her, and he doesn't know if she loves him. You know, right now, it's sort of, you know, unrequited love, right?[03:51] It's.[03:52] He's in love with her. He has not expressed these feelings to her.[03:56] So they're supposed to go to dinner or somewhere, and she says, listen, just go to my place. Let yourself in. Here's the key, and wait for me there. And so he goes over to her place, and he opens the door and walks in, and he describes walking around her place with such admiration and love.[04:17] And he's describing. Now he's doing this very beautifully and eloquently. It's lovely. He's an amazing writer. I am not giving. It just is here. But he's basically saying, here are the lucky things.[04:31] These beautiful material possessions, decorations, furniture that get to be near this woman that I love, you know. And so he's filled a little bit with, like, you know, I don't know, it even.[04:49] It even reads a little like envy. And it reads like, I mean, he's just walking around in absolute joy, being around the things that she has surrounded herself with. Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know if I thoughtfully have every single item in my life.[05:10] I don't know if I've thought it through about how much joy it brings me before I bring it into my life. But he is assuming that she has, like, you know, he's looking at the map that she's, you know, marked up with the places she's been and the books that she's blessed with her presence and hands and thoughts, conclusions and r

What's up? Okay, so today you're going to be.[00:03] Listening to a classic Thanksgiving episode of stress therapy. Yes, we're going to be listening to.[00:08] The Stress Therapist: One from the past, A flash from the past, but it's all still so good because you cannot throw a stick without hitting the word gratitude anywhere, Right? Even on the Internet.[00:18] And why? Because it actually works.[00:22] We know now that it works. It makes you feel better, but it's.[00:24] The Stress Therapist: So hard to get into that space. Right? Like, how do you do that? We're going to cover that today.[00:28] So relax and settle in and listen up, because your stress therapy classic edition session is about to begin right now.[00:51] The Stress Therapist: Hey, beautiful people.[00:52] It's time for some stress therapy, a podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in.[00:58] The Stress Therapist: The real world world. Finally, a place to Park.[01:00] My 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherry Flake.[01:25] The Stress Therapist: Hey, beautiful people. How's your beautiful self today? So today we're going to talk a little bit about gratitude. You can't throw a stick right now without hitting the word gratitude or being thankful.[01:34] And sometimes it's hard. I get it. It's very hard sometimes to be thankful when it feels like things aren't going your way or it feels like there's horrible things going on in the world that you can't do anything about.[01:43] You might be feeling powerless. It's also a really stressful time of year. It's also a time of year when people are really grappling with grief and loss and holidays pass and there's just a lot.[01:55] Right. But how can you keep it together during this time of gratitude? Well, little by little, you got to figure out what you're going to be grateful for. And that's why people want you to do a gratitude journal.[02:06] Not only because those people are happier and healthier and live longer, but also because it feels good to feel gratitude. It just does, whether you think so or not or you think it's cheesy or not.[02:19] So in the past two weeks, I have been hit by a teenager while driving my car. I love my car. It's a 2018 Chevy. It's amazing. It does have a vanity plate.[02:32] It says Cherubi. You know, get it Therapy. But with a ch like me. Yeah. My husband gave it to me for my birthday. I absolutely love my car. I think it's amazing and wonderful.[02:43] It's got a sunroof. It's got the air conditioned seats. I mean, I'm a huge fan and I've been hit twice. The first time I got hit by a teenager. He rear ended me.[02:55] I was stopped, I wasn't even moving. And I got out of the car and he was pretty upset and he said, would you call my dad? And I said that I would.[03:04] And I said to his dad, who was pretty angry, I said, you know, I don't really have any damage to my car. There's like a scratch. It was like two little scratches.[03:13] And I said, I'm not going to repair this so I can go about my merry way. Because if we call the cops, your boy is going to get ticket and then your insurance is going to go up and then they end up really punishing the parents, insurance companies in this regard, you know.[03:28] So I was like, you know, if you guys are cool with that. And he was really grateful and I left.[03:34] And then last week I was driving down the road in this guy just. I don't know if his foot slipped off the brake or what happened, but another teenager hit me from the side.[03:43] He was coming out of a side street, I was going down a relatively busy street and we pulled over and he again was really upset, you know, a little tearful.[03:52] It's really shaky getting in those accidents, you know what I mean? There's a lot of adrenaline running through. It can be really scary. And so we, you know, we did some calming things.[03:59] I was like, you know, you hit the right person. And so we kind of calmed down a little bit and I was like, you know, right now you don't have to drive.[04:06] Let's just take a couple of breaths, you know, because he was pretty shaken up and my car was damaged. And so I said the same thing. I said, maybe we don't call the cops because then you're going to get a ticket and then your insurance is going to go up.[04:17] And he said, I'm not going to repair this car. This is just my parents junker or whatever. I was like, that's fine. And then he said, would you call my mom?[04:24] And so I called his mom. And we have since worked it out and I gotta tell you, it has been relatively inconvenient to run around and get estimates, especially since I kind of feel like I could get like a lesser one if I can find the right person.[04:38] So I'm a little picky about that even though I'm not paying for it. But I just kind of want to do the right thing rather than the easiest thing in this

So everything starts wonderfully, goes lovely, and ends up great when we have the right mindset. So how can we do it? How can we get there? We're going to talk about that today, so relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now. Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to Park. My 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherri Flake. Hey, beautiful people. What's up? So we've been talking a lot about how to get started with a new meditation practice. But most of what I'm talking about really helps with every kind of new behavior that you're trying to make habitual, right? And just feeling good about things, like feeling. Okay, like your mental health, like your physical health, all of it really depends on how you're thinking about things. Okay. And I'll tell you, now that I've been on this planet for over a half a century, I'm just saying that mindsets are a good mindset. It's. I don't know, it seems a little less common as I get older. I seem like even my friends that are in a good mood or in good health or happy marriages or whatever, they still still have these kind of occasional yucky mindsets. And I'm sure I do, too. We all do. We all have this, like, ugh, whatever about something. And we need to make sure that when we're having negative thoughts about something or a mindset that doesn't really work for us, that we become aware of that so we can change it. Okay? So even though we think that, oh, you know, yeah, I'm getting older, I'm a little old lady, or a lot of people are talking about, yeah, now that we're older, you know, time goes by too quickly or, you know, getting older is not for wimps or whatever it is that you're saying or, you know, like yesterday someone was walking my groceries out to the car, and he said, well, my back is spent and my knees are spent. And, like, I don't know, I didn't even ask him about those things, but I have found in my life, side note, maybe unrelated, I don't know what it is. Someone told me that it was, quote, my energy. Usually people tell me that it's my, quote, energy. That's what the yoga teacher told Me on Sunday. But people want to talk to me. They want to tell me their things. They have wanted to tell me their things since I was born. That is why I'm a therapist. No matter where I go, even, like, when Covid hit, I was like, this is going to be amazing because I'm going to be, like, undercover. I'm going to wear a mask. I'm going to have a hat on. And people won't want to talk to me. Nope, people still want to talk to me. They want to tell me their problems. And that's fine. That's wonderful. That's my livelihood. That's how it is. But I am never, ever, ever, ever a fly on the wall. And so often when people are talking to me, they're saying really negative things about themselves. And I got to tell you, you got to remember, your brain is listening. Your brain is always listening to you talk. And although we've talked about how our brain doesn't understand English and its emotions and pictures and that kind of thing, that's true. That's true. But remember, every time you have a thought and then say it out loud, even if it's that part of your brain that's picking up on it that doesn't understand English, it usually comes with an emotion. So there are two things at play here. The actual words, you know, my knees are spent. Your brain hears that. It loves everything that you say to be absolutely true all the time. Because our egos are obsessed with being true and right. I mean, I don't know about you, but I love being right. Especially when I'm with my husband. I mean, my husband's a lawyer, and he has all these books about arguing and how to win an argument. And I'm like, yeah, nice try. Good luck with that, right? Because I like to be right just as much as the next guy. Even if he's a lawyer, Right? We're obsessed with being right. So when your brain hears these things, it wants to be right. And if you think I'm crazy, just walk around. Even if you don't think it's true right now. Even if it's. Your knees are healing. Even if. Whatever. Walk around saying, I used to have a knee problem. My knees used to hurt. Or even better, I am in perfect health. And get your mind off your knees altogether. I mean, the other day, my daughter had a pimple. It happens all the time with teenagers. And, you know, it was picture day. It's a big deal on picture day. It's a bummer, right? I said, girl, the Best thing you can do is not think about it. Don't talk about it, don't look at it, don't touch it. Completely remove all energy from the pimple, because it's going to get bigger. What you put your mind on gets bigger. Where your attention goes is where your energy flows. I think Joe Dispenza says that it's all true. And if you don't think it's true, you need to remember the things that you say to yourself that always seem to be true. I always find the best parking spot. Even my Halloween costume is always the best. Whatever it is. Or my Thanksgiving turkey always turns out great. Whatever it is that you're always saying to yoursel

What's up? People always say that you can't change. People don't change. No matter what you do, you can't change somebody. Wrong. I can tell you how to change someone immediately. And you better be careful with this because it works so well. You gotta think this through. All right? That's what we're gonna do today. So relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy session is about to begin right now. Hey, beautiful people. It's time for some stress therapy. A podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to park my 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now, your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherry flake. Hey, beautiful people, what's up? Okay, today I gotta make it quick. I only have a second. I'm a little delayed in getting this episode out there. It's been crazy. I just got back from a retreat at Jekyll island. It was amazing, but there was no power, there was no gas, there was no food available on the entire island, and there was no cell service. And it was an amazing retreat. I'm going to talk about that next time. But today, today I want to quickly give you this tip, because I hear all the time when I'm working with my clients, people say, I can't get him to change. He won't change. He won't change. And the thing is, the ticket is there's one little sweet, sweet method that works 100% of the time. But you got to be really careful with this method, see, because if you don't use it responsibly, you're going to get a change. You don't want. You know what I'm saying? So you got to be really, really, really careful. Okay? Here's what you do if you want someone to change. Here's the bummer. Here's the kicker. Here's the billboard sign you need to see. You have to change. That's how you get people to change. From the most fundamental thing, where if I just started screaming and running up and down my street, which I never do, and started yelling, fire, fire, I would imagine, or help, help, help. Or call 911, people would change. Right in that moment, they would change. They would become. Hopefully, they would become really good neighbors and maybe come out and, I don't know, I have dogs. Maybe they would ignore me and let me handle it myself. But hopefully my neighbors. My neighbors are lovely, but hopefully my neighbors would come out and they would give me a hand, they would change right then, in the moment, right. Because I'm doing something that's out of the ordinary. That is what you do in the ordinary. Okay? So if you are trying to get your man to empty the dishwasher, let's say, okay, that's a feat. That's a big feat. Okay? I've been. I've done that with my man. I've done that with my kids. That's not. It ain't easy, you know what I'm saying? But you might be doing the exact same thing every time you see that. Those dishes in the sink and the empty dishwasher. You might be, you know, saying something under your breath, you might be criticizing your husband. Whatever it is that you normally do, you have to change it. And I'm telling you, the best way to change it, the best time to change it, no one ever believes me about this is when the dishwasher has been filled by your man. Right? Yeah. That's the shocker. Right? So there's two separate messages here, right? So you have something in your life that you want to be different. You want someone to be different in that scenario. And the way that you do that is you do something different. What you normally do is not going to work. What you normally do is not going to work. What you normally do, it's not gonna work. Okay, I say this all the time, but people think, you know, I have told him a thousand times. Well, then maybe this time you don't tell him. Maybe this time you write him a letter. Maybe this time you have someone else tell him. Maybe you sit him down and tell him what it feels like for you to have. I mean, I literally sat my family down, probably, I don't know, eight or ten years ago. And I was like, listen, I know this doesn't make sense, because I was trying to get everybody to load the dishwasher, okay? So maybe this is a personal testimonial, but I was trying to get everybody to build a dishwasher. Nobody was doing it. I begged them. I pleaded with them. I told them it was just as easy to fill the dishwasher as it is to fill the sink. Nobody ever believes me. And I sat them all down at a time when the dishwasher was full and clean. And I said, listen, I gotta tell you something about me, okay? It doesn't make a lot of sense, and I hope that you'll be sensitive in judging me about this, but I just want you to know that when I see a bunch of dishes in the sink. I take it personally. I know that's so silly now. I was talking to kids, too. It is. It's super silly. It doesn't make any sense because I know you guys aren't putting dish. I mean, hopefully you guys aren't putting dishes in the sink and thinking that it's, like, personal insult. I don't think you're doing that. However, when I come home and I see a bunch of dishes in the sink, I don't know if it's my collective unconscious of other women that I am, like, connecting with over the eons and eons that we've done the dishes or wiped off the leaves or whatever we're using as cutlery and plates thousands of years ago. All I'm saying is, when I come home to a sink full of dirty dishes, it feels personal, and it feels like a personal insult. Does that make sense? No, it doesn't. But I would literally, no kidding, rather have someone come up and slap me in the face

Healing With Angelica Podcast With Guest Shondale AtkinsonEpisode: 107Revealing foster care realities and sparking change. . On this episode Shondale and I will be discussing her healing journey through the foster care system and how she was able to look beyond the system to help those that are in this predicament with using her experience and her voice to make a change and so much more.Guest Information:Shondale Atkinson‭ is a visionary advocate, entrepreneur, and champion for youth ‬empowerment, driven by her own life experiences in the foster care system. As the Founder & CEO of ‭The Mustard Seed Foundation (TMSF)‬, she has dedicated her life to changing the lives of young people by providing critical support in residential care, health and wellness outreach, and preventive education. Shondale's foundation is more than a service‭—it's a lifeline ‬for youth who face the same obstacles she once did. Raised in foster care and becoming a teen mother, Shondale intimately understands the uphill battles faced by young women in the system. These experiences sparked her deep commitment to making sure others wouldn't have to struggle alone. With nothing more ‭than the faith of a ‬mustard seed, she founded TMSF, which has since flourished into a beacon of hope for teenage mothers and underserved youth, showing them that their pasts don't define their futures.‭ ‬In addition to her work at TMSF, Shondale created ‭Kardio Kidz Camp‬, a summer program that instills the importance of physical health and cultural awareness in children ages 5-13. Her relentless pursuit of wellness expanded further after her lupus diagnosis in 2015. Turning her personal health challenge into purpose, she launched ‭Serendipity Community Care LLC‬ in 2019, a wellness clinic specializing in cannabis-based therapies and holistic healing, giving others the tools to take control of their health. Shondale's advocacy has reached new heights with her latest endeavor, ‭Beyond the System: A ‬Journey Through Foster Care‭. This powerful documentary sheds light on the foster care ‬experience through the eyes of foster children, parents, and social workers, calling for systemic change. ‭Beyond the System‬ ‭isn't just a film—it's a call to action for reform and awareness, ‬giving voice to those often overlooked. As a devoted mother of two daughters and a respected leader in her community, Shondale is recognized as a “woman to watch” in Ohio. Her story is one of resilience, faith, and transformation‭—‬proving that with determination, you can turn adversity into impact. Shondale Atkinson's work is more than a mission; it's a movement toward healing, empowerment, and a brighter future for generations to come.
