"Who says you can't win on a losing hand?" Kane Brown The Pivot takes Nashville...Country superstar Kane Brown joins The Pivot for one of his most candid conversations yet, opening up about the unlikely path that took him from posting videos on social media during work breaks to becoming one of the biggest names in country music. Sitting down with Ryan, Channing and Fred, Kane reflects on the challenges of breaking into a genre where he often feels overlooked, he shares how his determination, faith and family values help him navigate obstacles, racial encounters and industry skepticism along the way. Despite chart-topping success, sold-out arenas and countless accolades, Kane explains why he's never fully satisfied and continues chasing the next level. From battling self-doubt, loneliness that comes with success and mental health struggles of navigating fame, the conversation hits all levels. The conversation dives deep into his life off the stage—from recording music with his wife and building a family together to embracing the role of fatherhood and finding purpose beyond fame. Kane also opens up about the frustrating pattern of being passed over during awards season, how criticism became fuel, and why gratitude and ambition can coexist. A lifelong Georgia football fan, Kane shares stories about his friendships with some of the biggest names in sports, including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, offering a glimpse into the relationships he's built far beyond the music world. From viral videos and self-belief to family, legacy and the pursuit of greatness, Kane Brown delivers an honest look at success, sacrifice and the question he's still trying to answer: When you've reached the top, what does the finish line really look like? This is a conversation about resilience, identity, purpose and the relentless drive to keep pushing forward—even when the world says you've already made it. Learn more about your ad choices. A hit song can start with a flooded kitchen, a late co-writer, and a line tossed off as a joke. Sitting down with Phil Vassar, we follow the real road behind the radio: moving from Virginia to Nashville, getting told a piano player does not belong, and pushing through anyway until the first cuts finally land and the town starts listening. If you love songwriter stories, country music history, and the craft behind a chorus that sticks, this one goes deep and stays honest. We talk about building a career the hard way by owning a bar just to have a stage, playing every weekend, testing new songs on real people, and watching labels and artists start to show up. Phil shares what it felt like to jump from that club world to massive tours with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, then to life on the road with Kenny Rogers, plus the pranks, personalities, and weird little moments you only get when you live inside the music business. Then the conversation turns to longevity: why timeless songs outlive trends, why some of his favorite tracks were never singles, and how “Just Another Day in Paradise” went from chaos to a No. 1. Phil also opens up about his 2023 heart attack, the shock of “bad genes,” and how a second chance changes your perspective on life and songwriting. If you enjoy interviews about the songwriting process, Nashville, and classic country storytelling, subscribe, share this with a music-loving friend, and leave us a review so more listeners can find the show.

They were slick, clean cut, conservative compared to the punks, rockers, and metalheads, but they were perhaps more dangerous, more transgressive, more wild, and they sang about infidelity, loss, loneliness, and murder from an incredibly authentic point of view. In many cases, they lived it. I’m talking about hardcore country artists in this bonus episode plus your voicemails, texts, dms, emails and more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Charles Wesley Godwin is a country music artist and songwriter born and raised in Morgantown, West Virginia. He first discovered his passion for music in college, picking up a guitar after realizing his WVU football dreams weren't going to pan out and watching the Avett Brothers perform at the 2011 Grammys. He spent years developing his sound by playing small bars, cafes, and breweries across the country—often sleeping in his car—before breaking through with his independent 2019 debut album, Seneca. He is currently signed to Big Loud and Warner Chappell, and following the success of albums like How the Mighty Fall and Family Ties, he is preparing to release his newest record, Christian Name, on July 24th. In this episode, we discuss Charles's journey from playing his very first paid gig at a lingerie show in Estonia to building a nationwide audience. We dig into his early years trusting the tip jar on the road, the freezing winter studio sessions that shaped Seneca, navigating the pressures of the music business, and the night he almost quit music entirely. We also talk about why he considers songwriting to be his true creative high, his five-year wait to co-write with Lori McKenna, and many other stops along the way.--------------------------------------------------This episode is also sponsored by The Graphic Guitar Guys. A single “loss” can either break you or reroute you, and Terri Clark proves it can do both. Sitting down with me on Stories Behind the Songs, Terry tells the wild true story of a Canadian talent contest that left her and her mom crying on the drive home, only for her to learn ten years later that she actually won and was disqualified because she was underage at a Budweiser sponsored event. That one hidden detail helped push her toward the boldest move of her life: leaving Medicine Hat, Alberta for Nashville at 18 with no green card, no car, and no idea what the next week would look like.We get honest about the Nashville grind behind country music success: years of waiting tables, writing late on Music Row, carrying rejection from label to label, and hanging on to every small sign that the dream is still alive. Terri shares where she was when she first heard “Better Things To Do” on the radio, why she never really says “I've made it,” and how momentum in a career can vanish and return with the next brave creative choice.Because this is Stories Behind the Songs, we go deep on craft. Terri explains how she picks songs she did not write, why strong character and a strong female perspective matter, and how “No Fear,” co-written with Mary Chapin Carpenter, came together from a conversation about Johnny Cash. We also talk Terri Clark Take Two, reimagining hits with collaborators like Cody Johnson, Carly Pearce, and Kelly Clarkson, plus her blunt take on today's music business: art over commerce, play live, and do not let the content treadmill replace the work.If you love country music storytelling, songwriting process, and real career lessons from an artist who's lived them, hit play. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the extraordinary Wendy Moten for a conversation about longevity, versatility, professionalism, and the many different ways a singer can build a meaningful life in music. Wendy has one of those careers that musicians know and revere: a major-label artist in the 1990s, a world-class touring vocalist, a sought-after session singer, a member of the Grammy-winning Time Jumpers, a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry, and, more recently, a powerful presence for a new generation of listeners through The Voice. What struck me most in this conversation is how clearly she understands her craft, her purpose, and the discipline required to sustain both.We begin by talking about the busy season she is in now, balancing solo work, sessions, weekly performances with the Time Jumpers, and another major tour with Vince Gill. Wendy shares the story of how Vince first called her out of the blue after her run with Martina McBride had ended, and how that invitation opened an entirely new chapter in her career. From there, we get into what she calls her “version of country music,” and how she found it not by imitating the genre, but by studying its history, listening closely, and finding an authentic way to bring herself into the tradition. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on harmony singing and what it really means to support another artist. Wendy talks beautifully about what she learned during 15 years as Julio Iglesias's duet partner, including how to listen, how to match breath and phrasing, how to stay out of the way, and how to make someone else sound even better. She says she was “getting paid for self-control,” which is one of the best descriptions of professional background singing I have ever heard. That whole section of the conversation is full of insight for anyone who cares about what it means to serve the music at a very high level. We also talk about church, family, and the support system that made her life in music possible. Wendy reflects on growing up in Memphis, singing in church, and learning early how to stand in front of people, even when she was shy and uncomfortable. She shares how much her parents sacrificed to create opportunities for her and her siblings, and how much those sacrifices still mean to her now. We also spend time talking about her Grand Ole Opry appearances, including the emotion of making her Opry debut without her parents there to see it, and the significance of standing on that stage as a Black woman in a space where history has not always made room for everyone.Along the way, we get into her years at EMI, the pressure to be shaped into whatever version of success the label wanted at the time, and the freedom she eventually found by building a career outside the usual boxes. Wendy talks openly about not needing fame in the conventional sense, about loving the role of underdog, and about continuing to surprise people. This is a conversation about singing, certainly, but also about resilience, humility, excellence, and how to remain generous and grounded across four decades in music.Key TakeawaysWendy Moten reflects on building a career across pop, country, jazz, Americana, sessions, television, and touring without being confined to one lane. She shares how 15 years with Julio Iglesias taught her phrasing, breath, dynamics, communication, and the art of listening more deeply.Wendy talks about singing with Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers, and how she developed her own authentic relationship to country music. She offers a sharp and memorable perspective on background vocals: great harmony singing requires self-control, consistency, and leaving your ego at home. The conversation explores how the church shaped her confidence, artistry, and ability to recover from mistakes in front of an audience.Wendy also reflects on The Voice, why she chose to do it, and how it introduced her to a new audience without diminishing everything that came before it.We discuss the Grand Ole Opry, the emotional weight of her debut, and the significance of taking up space in a tradition that has not always been inclusive.Music from the EpisodeOde to Billy Joe - Wendy MotenDon't Touch Me - Wendy MotenDriving Nails in My Coffin - Wendy MotenFaithless Love - Wendy Moten (with Vince Gill)About the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast where I sit down with musicians, singers, songwriters, producers, and creative people for thoughtful conversations about craft, career, collaboration, and the life experiences that shape the music. Just three chords and the truth. Or a double-minded genre, unstable in all its ways. One song praises God; the next glorifies drunkenness. One minute it's faith; the next it's fornication. And millions of Christians are singing along to both without blinking an eye. From Ella Langley to Morgan Wallen to Riley Green to Tucker Wetmore, the message is incredibly consistent: get drunk, sleep around, break hearts, ignore conviction—but talk about the big man upstairs. Just sprinkle a little Jesus on top to pull in the nominals and voila… you've got yourself some country music. What we want to get in today is what Eric Church calls, quote, "Country Music Jesus." And does he match the One we find in Scripture?
