In this episode of Bricks and Bumps, we discuss why leaving your car in AWD might not always be the best choice and when 2WD is the way to go. Plus, we talk about the strange world of promotional games gone wrong; like a guy being denied a car after nailing a football challenge. For millions of people across the country, a week on a lake is a dream vacation. This year Host Jack Nerad and his family found that out firsthand as they drove a 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro to Cedar Creek Lake south of Dallas for some serious driving and welcome R and R. As the Nerads discovered, the Sequoia had the goods to offer dual duty as both a serious off-roader and a practical family hauler. The third-generation Sequoia three-row SUV delivered luxurious comfort, impressive technology and exceptional convenience features. The twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain offers plenty of acceleration with 437 horsepower and a whopping 583 pound-feet of torque. Towing a big boat is child's play with an impressive 9,520-pound maximum towing capacity. For the stock-up stop at the big box store, the Sequoia offers a cavernous cargo area and an innovative multi-level cargo system. When it comes to all-terrain capability, the TRD Pro's part-time four-wheel-drive system includes a transfer case, controlled via a button on the center console, to select between 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low. The multi-link rear and available air suspensions keep the vehicle in firm control. Nerad will recount more of his family's adventures as the road tests unroll. In our second road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will discuss his family's recent purchase, the 2024 Honda Prologue. Making the big leap into the electric vehicle lifestyle, the Teague family has already experienced the joys and travails of battery power. Teague will share far more in this episode. Our special guest is George Baker, General Motors' Vehicle Security Lead. He will discuss ways to avoid becoming a car theft victim. Car theft is on the rise across the country, so you'll want to hear what he has to say. In the news, Tesla's Elon Musk has just hinted that the debut of the carmaker's robotaxi will be delayed. We'll tell you why and what all means coming up. General Motors CEO Mary Barra has just revealed that her company's goal of producing one million electric vehicles in North America is, in her words, “uncertain.” We'll have the details and our thoughts. Meanwhile, hundreds of MINIs are scurrying across the western United States this weekend, and we”ll tell you all about that. Also in the news, Consumer Reports has released its list of the Best Electric Vehicles, and we'll tell you about the surprising top-rated car and other surprises on the list with, of course, our comments. So we have a lot of show for you this week. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Welcome aboard Jess. Jess started her love for Toyota in a 2015 TRD OR PreRunner. She quickly learned d that 2WD wasn't going to cut for her and she upgraded to a 4WD. She built her white 3rd Gen Tacoma with all the goodies. It was an overland style beast that she took everywhere. White with all the red trim and details to match her hair. Recently Jess pulled the trigger and got herself the all new 2024 4th Gen Tacoma and she is fired up. Not only because the truck is now red just like her hair but because the turbo charged 4cyl is ripping it up. She has already begun her bid on "Rose" and things are happening. Can't wait to meet Jess & Rose at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff and looking forward to whats in store for them both...Instagram@redhead_jess

In partnership with Tourism Western Australia, this episode of Travel in 20 goes west to discover the wonders of Western Australia. Jacqui is joined by Fleur Bainger, a Perth-based journalist who shares everything visitors need to know about exploring the vast beauty of Western Australia. Fleur tells us why an overnight stay on Rottnest Island is better than just a day trip. She recommends some of her favourite places – including some off-the-beaten-track – for wining and dining in Margaret River and shares where in Busselton you can find a restaurant helmed by a former chef of Noma. Jacqui and Fleur then head north towards UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed Ningaloo Reef and finally arrive in the Kimberley. Find out why hiring a 2WD or 4WD for the self-drive between Broome and the Dampier Peninsula is a great way to connect to country and visit local Indigenous communities. 00:00 - A Compact SUV That Is Versatile, Affordable and Surprisingly Fast With Its V6 EngineSold in the US from model years 2006-2012, the third generation Toyota RAV4 was a compact SUV that offered buyers a wide range of features, drive modes and engine options to suit almost any buyer01:00 - INTRO - The Third Generation Toyota RAV4 - What It IsIt's the go-to recommended compact SUV option from me when someone says, I have about $10,000 to $12,000 to spend and I need a single vehicle to do a little bit of everything from people hauling, to commuting, to taking road trips and going on weekend adventures. 02:00 - Why Might You Want OneHandsome Exterior StylingAttractive Interior Styling 06:45 - Available In Three Different Models With A Wide Range Of Features, Drive Trains and Engine ChoicesThe third Gen RAV4 was available in Base, Sport and Limited Trim, with 2WD or 4WD and a choice of 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines08:10 - Fuel EconomyThe 2WD 4-cylinder models got the highest fuel economy and the 4WD 6-cylinder models got the lowest, but the combined US fuel economy rating difference between the highest and lowest models was only 2-mpg, so I recommend buying a V6 model with 4WD for quick acceleration, increased towing capacity and more fun behind the wheel. 11:15 - Exceptional Power And Performance With The V6 EngineThe 4-clylinder Third Gen RAV4s offered adequate power combined with a somewhat antiquated 4-speed automatic, however the 6-cylinder models were a different story. When first launched, the Third Gen RAV4 V6 models offered over 100-hp more than the 4-cylinder models, and came with a 5-speed automatic transmission that made better use of that power under all driving conditions. 12:45 - Braking And HandlingThe 3rd Gen Toyota RAV4 drives more like a car than a truck or an SUV. It's taller, of course, and feels a little top-heavy on a winding road compared to a car, but it's overall driving experience can best be described as “sporty”, and while there were different suspension and tire diameter combinations between models, all RAV4s handle well and offer confidence-inspiring braking. 14:35 - What Do Owners Think Of The Third Gen RAV4s? Overall owners of the third generation RAV4 really like these sporty compact SUVs. For example, 94% of 2010 RAV4 owners who posted comments about their ownership experience would recommend the third generation RAV4 to others. 20:10 - Common Issues, Problems and Caveats No used car is perfect, including the RAV4. We review some common issues and a couple of major problems that you should be aware of when considering the purchase of third generation RAV4. 29:00 - What To Look For When Buying A Third Gen RAV4I would avoid the 2006-2008 2.4-liter 4-cylinder RAV4s unless the ring tension issue has been fixed, but the later 2009-2012 RAV4s with the 2.5-liter 4-clyinder should be fine. However, my top recommendation is a full-featured Sport or Limited 6-cylinder model with 4WD from 2009-2012 - preferably one from the final year or two of the production run. With nearly 270-hp and 4WD, along with decent fuel economy, this RAV4 configuration is a no-brainer choice for me. 31:30 - Third Gen RAV4 Price Range$5,000-$8,000 - Maybe something okay, but probably not$8,000-$10,000 - Solid choices, but still some potential issues$10,000-$12,500 - You should find great RAV4s In this range$12,500-$15,000 - The best low-mile private party RAV4s$15,000 and above - Why? There are great RAV4s available for less - Try harder! 34:45 - WRAP UPThis...
00:00 - OPEN - Little Weirdos 4x4 Edition Special - PART 3Today is the third episode of our month-long Little Weirdo's 4x4 Edition podcast special here on Better Than New - featuring four small, fun-to-drive and affordable used 4x4 SUVs from the 80s and 90s.01:10 - INTRO - 1986-1995 Suzuki Samurai 4x4This week's “Little Weirdo” small 4x4 is the Suzuki Samurai, which was introduced to America in 1985 as a 1986 model year vehicle and was sold here through 1995 01:50 - The Numbers Don't MatterThe Suzuki Samurai's horsepower, torque and acceleration numbers are well below modern SUVs, but take one drive off-road in the Samurai and none that matters. 04:50 - Serious Off-Road CapabilityThe Samurai is very compact and light, yet it still features a rugged, body-on-frame design and a 2-speed transfer case with 2WD high, 4WD high and 4WD low, so it's considered to be a “real” 4WD vehicle by off-road enthusiasts.06:30 - The Altitude RecordIn 2007, a team of Chilean drivers used a modified Suzuki Samurai to set a Guinness world altitude record of 21,804 feet on a dormant volcano in the Andes mountains - a record that stood for more than a dozen years.07:30 - Primitive, But Better Over TimeWhile small and crude, Suzuki continued to slowly improve the Samurai over its 9-year US run.09:00 - Beginning Of The End - The Consumer Reports Rollover StoryEven though the Samurai had performed well in Consumer Reports initial handling tests, apparently a staff member of the magazine later rolled a Samurai while driving. Because of that, the magazine's editors decided to try to replicate the same conditions to determine if the Samurai was actually more inclined to roll compared to similar vehicles. 11:15 - Is The Samurai Really The Rollover King?High ground clearance 4x4s with a short wheelbase, a high center of gravity and tall off-road tires will always be inclined to roll over easier than say, a low-slung sports car with a low center of gravity. 13:35 - What Should You Look For?Condition is the most important thing to considerAvailable with a Soft-top or HardtopLow miles, minimal owners, no rebuilt or salvage titleBuy one in stock conditionMake sure it has the back bench seat18:10 - How Much Should You Pay? Under $5000 - Not very many good Samurai's in this low price range, but you might get lucky$5000 to $7500 - Good solid examples can be found in this range, but with some minor issues$7500 to $10,000 - This is the price range where I would expect to find great examples, excellent value and the best deals$10,000 to $12,500 - You should easily be able to find a great Samurai in this range without too much effort. $12,500-$15,000 or more - At this price or higher, you might want to consider other options, so make sure a Samurai is really what you want to buy before paying this much. 20:55 - ConclusionThat wraps up this week's Little Weirdo's 4x4 Edition episode on the Suzuki Samurai. Another excellent, small 4x4 SUV from the 80s and 90s that's provides Jeep-like off-road prowess with a relatively inexpensive price. As I write this we are still full on in winter in Iceland, but I think it's imperative to share some essential trip-planning tips for summer here. Summer is the high season and now that people are traveling more, I'm seeing that the number of people planning to come during this time is increasing dramatically. Some of you might not know but I do one-to-one video consultation calls with people planning their trips to Iceland. They are one hour long and recently I have been chatting with people who are coming this summer. While the consultation calls are personalized according to what the person wants to do and see, I noticed there are some common things to know that could be helpful for everyone planning to visit during peak season. What is Discussed in this Post What to book immediately For Your Summer Trip to IcelandTravel Tips for Driving Around the CountryIceland's Magnificent & Disruptive Midnight SunHow to Beat Summer Crowds in IcelandWhat to know if you plan to hike in the Icelandic HighlandsThe Best Places to See Puffins and Whales in IcelandIceland's Summer Events Worth AttendingWhat to Pack for a Summer Adventure in Iceland Book an Iceland Trip Planning Call with Me Before I jump into my tips, if you're interested in getting personalized trip planning advice from me, you can book me for a consultation via this link.I'm always delighted to hear at the end of the video call that the consultation has been so helpful. One review of this service I provide is from Riana D, who wrote, "Our conversation with Jewells made a distant and unfamiliar place that was foreign to us, Iceland, seem familiar and practical. She helped design a trip that was exciting to me, an active young adult, and accessible to my travel partner- my retired mother! I particularly recommend taking advantage of her rental car discount code." Riana D Thank you for the review, Riana D. The rental car code she is referring to is for Go Car Rental Iceland. By using "Iceland10", you can save 10% on you full rental car cost from a local and amazing car rental company. This especially comes in handy during summer because the cost of rental cars can double when compared to winter due to high demand. 1. Book These Things in Iceland Right Immediately * Accommodations After you have gotten your flight tickets, it's imperative that you get your accommodations settled right away. Some people are buying their flight tickets 6 months ahead of when they travel but are waiting to book accommodations. The issue with that is accommodations are filling up quickly. Before the start of 2023, 70% of accommodations in Iceland were booked for summertime (June – August). A lot of construction is happening here to build more accommodations, but it's been hard to keep up with the demand of the number of travelers. * Rental Car While you have a little more leeway with your rental car, I recommend getting that squared away as well. Many travelers, like yourself, want the best bang for their buck and the earlier you get your rental car, the more choices you have. For instance, smaller 2WD cars cost less and are great for driving around the country during the summer, especially if you just plan to be on the ring road. Those are the first cars to get snagged. Also, the nicer 4x4 cars for the highlands get snagged too. * Camping Sites If you're planning to use a camper van or to camp in a tent, there are some camp sites that sell out because they are so popular. Mainly, the ones in the south of the country. It's good to map out what places you plan to visit and the campsites nearby so you can book them in advance as well. * Certain Tours & Experiences Thankfully, there are not a lot of tours and experiences that you don't have to book ahead of time but are a few that I recommend that you do.The Blue Lagoon during summer usually has no reservation available once you...
This week we sit down to with author and van lifer, Dot Bekker. Between November 2018 and August 2019, Dot traveled from Spain to her hometown in Zimbabwe in an old, self-converted campervan; A 1998 Blue Ford Transit, lovingly named BlueBelle, who also happened to be a 2WD. That's right, Dot & BlueBelle, against all odds, (slowly) drove 20,000km solo to get 'home to Africa'. And the stories & insights that she shares with us from this trip are truly inspirational. Dot's hope is to motivate others to take on challenges and to realise their own potential because as she wrote in her book, ”if an ordinary sixty-year old woman could make something extraordinary happen, then so can you.” Dot's Book “Going Home to Africa” is available here: https://amzn.to/3YVVwMx Learn more about how you can connect with & support Dot's charity work here: www.goinghometoafrica.com Send Dot your emojis on Instagram here: @goinghometoafrica
00:00 - OPEN - A Tree Falls and Smashes Our Cars, Which Leads To This 2nd Generation Nissan Xterra ReviewFirst, an apology... sorry for the very late delivery on this episode! It's been a heck of a week here at Casa de Crenshaw as my podcast prep time was suddenly taken up with debris removal and car insurance hassles. That's because at the beginning of the week, an 80' tree snapped off in high winds and smashed three of our cars. One is totaled, one will need paint work and the third... well, that one is just going to live on with battle scars. Originally I was planning a different episode this week, but out of the unexpected "Driveway Apocalypse" came an opportunity to review the 2nd Generation Nissan Xterra. What follows is a story about truly helpful neighbors and a great SUV, so enjoy! 00:42 - INTRO - Helpful Neighbors Help Cut Our Cars Free After a Tree Falls On Them In A WindstormI am so grateful to our neighbors who came to our rescue with chain saws, trucks, trailers and several hours of sweaty work to help free our cars after they were crushed by a fallen tree. What follows in the next 10 minutes is a recap of what happened. That event lead to this week's podcast, because in addition to all the help cutting away the tree debris, we also had the opportunity to drive a neighbor's 2011 Xterra while we sorted out our car situation. That generosity promoted this week's episode. I was planning to review the second generation Xterra at some point, but the opportunity to drive one this week reminded me why I like Xterras so much, so I dropped my other podcast episode idea, turned lemons into lemonade (or maybe Limoncello) and created this last-minute review of the 2nd Generation Nissan Xterra. Again, sorry it took so long to get this recorded and posted, but I had to take care of our family disaster cleanup first. 11:25 - Background On The Nissan Xterra First Gen Xterra (2000-2004) Overview1st Gen Xterra was a big hit with outdoor enthusiasts Named Motortrend's SUV of the year in 2000Featured rugged, no-frills styling that still looks great today Body-on-frame design offered solid off-road capabilityDrivers had a choice of either a 4-cylinder or a 6-cylinder engine2.4-liter 4-cylinder made 143-hp3.3-liter 6-cylinder made 170-hp (bumped to 180 hp in 2003)Available in 2WD and 4WD with automatic or manual transmission Second Gen Xterra (2005-2015) Overview Styling in original Xterra was a hit, so Nissan just enhanced it in the 2nd Gen XterraRugged good looks of the original are still attractive today. 2nd Gen Xterra is larger in every dimension & considerably more powerful than previous generation (more room inside for people and gear) Still an affordable SUV targeted towards outdoor enthusiastsBuilt on Nissan's sturdy F-Alpha platform used in the Frontier and Titan pickups4-cylinder option dropped. 6-cylinder is the only optionNew engine is a 4.0-liter VQ-series 6-cylinder that makes 261-hp and 281-lb.ft of torque (engine was rated at 265-hp & 284-lb.ft. initially, but SAE revamped their power certification rating, so the hp & torque numbers were changed to 261-hp & 281-lb.ft for 2007 model year)This new VQ-series engine is similar to the 3.5-liter motor in the 350Z, but it has a longer stroke to make it 4.0-liters displacement, delivering more low-end power & torque better suited to an SUV. 15:15 - Some Reasons Why You Might Want A 2nd Gen Nissan XterraRugged good looks are as appealing today as when newUnique design touches, including fender flares, locking top storage box, footholds in the rear bumper to reach the rack and...

Towing Capacity When it comes time to drag your stuff around Atlas Cross Sport is capable. Though it's more commonly being used as a hauler of people. The 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport can tow up to 2,000 lbs with the smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. And that jumps up to 5,000 lbs with the larger 6-cylinder. Either way, those weights are with a braked trailer. Rather than one without brakes. 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder or 3.6L 6-cylinder engines 2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport Exterior Atlas Cross Sport's stylish design wins universal applause. It's athletic and sporty from every angle. Bold front and rear fascias. Attractive three-quarter views. And its profile silhouette punches above its price point for sure. Cross Sport is a Volkswagen vehicle for sure. But the less-educated car-guy-eye can easily pass Cross Sport for its luxury sibling. And that's Audi's Q8, with a starting price north of $73,000. Moreover, Volkswagen Cross Sport arguably shares the shape of its supercar brethren in Lamborghini Urus. And its starting price is a nose-bleeding $230,000. Fun fact: Lamborghini is owned by Volkswagen Group through its subsidiary, Audi.

5. ¡Era made in Spain! Porque lo fabricaba Santana en España. 6. Sus cualidades como TT eran impresionantes. 7.

I'm focusing on F-roads in this episode because they provide access to parts of the country that most visitors to Iceland never see. While that might sound appealing to most people listening, driving on these roads are often challenging and can even be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. I hit on this topic a little bit in my Ultimate Guide to Renting a Car in Iceland episode. I recommend checking that episode out so you can be as prepared as possible when you go to book. F-Road Table of Contents What are F-Roads? Is it worth it to drive on F-Roads in Iceland? When Can You Access F-Roads in Iceland? What cars are allowed to drive on F-Roads? Not All 4WD Cars are Created Equal What Type of 4x4 is Right for Your Adventure in the Highlands? Where to Rent a 4WD Car in Iceland What to Check Before Heading Out on F-Roads What to Keep in Mind While Driving on an F-road How to Cross a River in Iceland My Favorite Places to Visit in the Icelandic Highlands What are F-Roads? To start out, let's talk about what F-roads are. The “F” stands for Fjallvegur in Icelandic, which translates to mountain road. The roads literally start with an F and are followed by a number. An example is F-910. These roads are not paved, are uneven, often have lots of potholes, and rocks (big and small). I've been on some F roads where it was not that challenging to drive on but later I encountered very large rocks and an uneven surface, so it required me to go much slower and maneuver carefully. Many of these roads have rivers that you need to cross to get to your destination. I will share some tips on how to cross rivers safely in a little bit. Is it Worth It to Drive on F-Roads in Iceland? In my mind, it is so worth it, even if it is just a day trip into the Icelandic highlands. The raw beauty, varied landscape and lack of people make it so much fun to travel here. Of course, precaution and some planning is needed but such is life in Iceland. When Can You Access F-Roads in Iceland? F-roads provide access to different parts of the Icelandic highlands, a large area of Iceland that is uninhabitable and where you can find raw, untouched nature. However, the roads are only open during the warmer months. When they open and close depends on the weather and if the road is passable due to snow, ice and/or storms. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration determines each year when it is safe to open the roads. It is normally expected that the roads will open by late June. However, if we've had a particularly cold winter, it could be later. Therefore, most people who want to travel into the highlands are advised to come in July or August. While it's not a guarantee that the roads will be open at the beginning of July, it is a much more likely than earlier. Here is a link to a page on road.is that shows the earliest, latest, and median for opening dates for F roads in the country. While it all depends on weather, the closing of F-roads can be in September or mid-October. What Cars are Allowed to Drive on F-Roads? 4WD vehicles are the only things you should drive on an F-road for two reasons. The first is that 4WD are the only cars that are insured for this type of road. If something were to happen to you in a 2WD on an F-road, you are responsible for the full cost of repairing or replacing the vehicle. The other reason is that the conditions of the road, including steep inclines, and crossing rivers require a car with 4WD. Not All 4WD Cars Are Created Equal Not all 4WD vehicles are created equal. First off, if you plan to cross rivers you need to a car with enough clearance underneath the car because we don't flood the engine. Also, some 4WD cars have been modified for crossing very deep rivers like þjórsá, which you cross to get to Þórsmörk. Some modifications you will see on 4WD are snorkels for the engine, huge tires, and sometimes even tires that can be inflated and deflated.
Hveradalir is one of Iceland's largest geothermal areas, but it's tucked away in Iceland's highlands. To access anywhere in the highlands of this country, you must drive on F-roads, which are unpaved, rough and often require you to cross rivers.I'm planning to do a whole episode on F-roads because it's important to understand how to navigate them safely, but just know that some rivers that run across F-roads are so deep that they can drown the engine if you don't have a snorkel and a modified vehicle to cross them.Thankfully, access to Hveradalir geothermal area does not require a large river crossing. I dare to say that it is more like a small stream that you need to drive over but it's totally doable for a regular 4x4 vehicle. My preferred Local Icelandic Rental Car Company - Go Car Rental Iceland Before I get into why Hveradalir is more than worth a visit, I would like to thank the sponsor of this episode. I partnered with Go Car Rental Iceland to drive into the highlands so you can see an example of an F-road and to feature a drop-dead gorgeous place that is easy to access in this part of the country.Go Car Rental Iceland is an awesome local car rental company that has transparent pricing, great rates, unlimited mileage on their rentals, and friendly staff. They are my go-to company when I need a car for my adventures. You can use my code Iceland10 to save 10% on your entire rental cost with them, which is a good deal of savings. The Ultimate Guide to Renting a Car in Iceland If you need a guide on what car to rent in Iceland and tips on what to know before, during, and after driving around the country, check out my Ultimate Guide to Renting a Car in Iceland. It's a thorough guide that has already helped one of my listeners to save $400 on their rental. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBOWnle7PdU Why Hveradalir Geothermal Area in Iceland is Worth Visiting Hveradalir geothermal area is nestled in the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range in the central highlands of Iceland. I also created a YouTube video that has a lot of insanely beautiufl drone shots, so feel free to check that out too.The various colors of Hveradalir – yellow, green, orange, and red – make this place look like a painting. But what really brings it to life is the steam rising from the earth and the warm water flowing throughout the area. All of it combines in a magical way that makes you feel like you stepped onto another planet. How to Get to Hveradalir Geothermal Area The most important thing to know is that you must drive a 4x4 vehicle for this adventure. The only way you can visit Hveradalir in a vehicle is if it's a 4x4 because you must drive on the roads F-35 and F-347.Only 4x4 cars are insured for driving on F-roads in Iceland. If you drive a 2WD car there and something happens to your car, you are fully responsible for the cost of repairing or replacing it. I highly discourage you from taking that chance. F-35 road runs from north to south in the highlands, so you can access this place regardless of you drive from either of those directions.I used a lovely blue Jeep from Go Car Rental Iceland to get there from Reykjavík. In addition to the cool features in the car, I love blue, so that was a cool cherry on top. From Reykjavík to HveradalirIt takes 3.5 hours to access Hveradalir if you drive from ReykjavíkFrom Akureyri to HveradalirIt takes 4 hours from Akureyri, which is in north Iceland Spectacular Sites Along the Way to Hveradalir, If You Travel from Reykjavík If you are driving from Reykjavík, you take the same route for the Golden Circle, which includes Þingvellir National Park, Geysir hot spring, and Gullfoss waterfall. You can make a busy day out of it, if you have not been to the Golden Circle, and go to all these sites. Most people who drive this route stop at Gullfoss because they don't have the appropriate car to keep going and/or they don't know where the road that keeps going leads to.

Even with a steady push toward EVs, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas continues to impress with new upgrades. It doesn't seem that long ago that the European carmaker was rolling out its very first 7-passenger Atlas. But the '22 Atlas marks the 5th model year for the first-generation midsize crossover SUV. ⇒iDriveSoCal's Exclusive Volkswagen Partner is Ontario Volkswagen! And to be clear, the Atlas is more crossover than SUV, albeit a highly capable one. Moreover, it's a big midsize. Big inside anyway. So big that the 3rd-row backseat is adequate for normal-size adults. Conversely, most midsize SUVs that offer third-row seating are only equipped to squeeze kids and very small adults in the back row. But that's not the case with Atlas. And that is why Interior Space heads my Top-3 favorites about the vehicle. 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Top-3: Interior space Technology Drive ⇒Continue reading below and click play to listen!⇐ 2022 VW Atlas SE trim New This Year For 2022 VW Atlas For 2022 Volkswagen Atlas gets a reconfigured model lineup. So no hugely major changes but some cool adjustments. And when you look at the lineup and the direction Volkswagen is taking it, the edits makes sense. First, VW's all-wheel drive known as 4MOTION is now standard on all SEL models. Along with that comes 20-inch machined wheels. Then optional with that is a black R-Line package. Moreover, R-Line is now standard on SEL Premium and includes 21-inch wheels. Additionally, Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit is standard across all Atlas trims. Finally, and speaking of trims, VW scales the options down a bit - you now have six to pick from. Trims And MSRPS So what are the six trim options you ask? They are as follows: 2022 VW Atlas Trims And MSRPs: SE $33,900 SE w/ Technology $38,070 SEL $43,670 SEL R-Line $46,820 SEL R-Line Black late availability SEL Premium R-Line $51,070 And note that the SEL R-Line Black is listed as late availability. That's all Volkswagen is telling us at this point. And a persistent chip shortage plus supply chain issues have plagued the car business for more than a year now. So we'll have to see what the definition of 'late availability' winds up being for the SEL R-Line Black. Engines, Transmission, and MPG No matter what trim you select for your 2022 VW Atlas, there are only two engines that you could wind up with. And both of these motors have been around the VW-sphere for a while. Both are reliable and quite similar performing - in my opinion. And I've driven both numerous times. Engines 2.0L Inline Turbocharged 4-cylinder - delivering 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. 3.6L V6 - delivering 276 hp and 266 pound-feet of torque. Transmission Either engine comes with the same 8-speed automatic transmission. And in both cases, the V6 or the turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, the transmission is geared effectively to maximize motor performance. At the same time, the transmission optimizes the fuel economy that Atlas delivers. So you're left with the option of 2WD or 4MOTION. And with the Volkswagen Atlas, 2WD is powered by the front wheels. My suggestion is to go with 4MOTION. Because fuel economy isn't that different. And your resale value on the vehicle should be higher. While the initial cost of the vehicle will also be a little higher, the pre-owned crossover SUV market tends to favor all-wheel drive. Gas Mileage When it comes to the MPG that '22 Atlas provides, you're in good shape. Because Atlas, while being a midsize vehicle, is a Volkswagen. And VW's are made sturdy - solid. But in doing so they tend to weigh a bit more than comparable vehicles. 2022 VW Atlas MPG est.: 2.0-Turbo 4-cylinder FWD 21/23/25 AWD 20/22/24 3.6L V6 FWD 18/20/24 AWD 17/19/23 *All city/combined/highway So as you can see by the above EPA estimated fuel economy br...
Time really flies, because the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe marks the second model year of the icon's 5th generation. Whoah, 'icon' - really? Yes. Perhaps that's this reporter's opinion but my bet is that there are plenty who agree. ⇒iDSC's Chevy HQ is Martin Chevrolet! The seven (and up to eight) passenger Tahoe shares the platform with a couple of siblings. But there's always been something special about the full-size SUV. Although the GMC Yukon is slightly more upscale. And the Cadillac Escalade is even a bit more upscale. The Chevy Tahoe just brings it all. Performance, styling, and capability. Moreover, the big sport-ute costs less than its aforementioned brethren. And I dig that! 2022 Chevy Tahoe Top-3: Drive Styling Interior ⇒Continue reading below and click play to listen.⇐ 7-8 Passenger full-size SUV 2022 Chevy Tahoe - New For 2022 So, just last year Tahoe was all-new. But Chevy continues to inspire with available new stuff for 2022. For example, there are some cool new exterior colors - auburn metallic, evergreen gray metallic and darks ash metallic. Plus some cool tech options. Like reverse auto-braking. Also, front and rear park assist. Additionally lane-keep assist with lane departure warnings. Camera monitoring views get enhanced along with Google Assistant. Even better is the digital instrument cluster. That comes standard on LT trims and above. Finally, we can't leave out the 6.2-liter V8 that's now available for Premier and Z71 trims. Trims And Pricing As always Chevrolet provides multiple trims, and all of these assure you are able to make Tahoe explicitly yours. 2022 Tahoe trims and starting MSRPs: LS $50,200 LT $55,600 RST $58,800 Z71 $60,800 Premier $63,600 High Country $70,500 Also, the test driver you see pictured throughout this post is a 4WD LT. Engines, Transmissions, And Gas Mileage Tahoe is a true sport utility vehicle. Which, might be obvious to some. But in the world of crossover SUVs, that's worth pointing out. But while it's closer to a truck than a car, Chevy doesn't go to the extent of engine and transmission options. Like, for example, what the carmaker does with Silverado. Engines For 2022 Tahoe can come with three different motors: 5.3L V8, 355 horsepower, and 383 pound-feet of torque 6.2L V8, 420 hp, and 460 lb-ft of torque 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, 277 hp, and 460 lb-ft of torque Drivetrain Regardless of the powerplant, the 2022 Chevy Tahoe comes equipped with the same transmission. And it's a smooth-shifting and efficient 10-speed automatic. So you're left with the choice of 2WD or 4WD. And here's another point that might be obvious but worth noting. The 2WD option is rear-wheel drive. MPG When it comes to fuel-economy Tahoe is in really good shape. Because a full-size Tahoe delivers about the same EPA estimated fuel economy as my midsize Toyota Tacoma. (And that hurt, frankly, when a realized it!) 2022 Tahoe Fuel-Economy: 5.3L V8 2WD 15/20 4WD tbd/tbd 6.2L V8 2WD 14/20 4WD 14/19 3.0L turbo-diesel 2WD 21/28 4WD 20/26 *All city/highway Speaking of my Tacoma, that's a 2WD - making the fuel-economy comparison all the more painful! And it used to be that I'd suggest buying 4WD only if you think you'll be using it. But with Tahoe's fuel efficiency, just get the 4WD. Because it doesn't cost that much more anyway. Plus, it increases your resale value. So, you might as well have it. 8 to 10-inches of ground clearance What Does 2022 Chevy Tahoe Look Like? I love the look of the new Tahoe - this fifth generation we're enjoying. While that's not changed from last year to this year it's both a beautiful and bold design. For instance, even though the trim pictured throughout this post is an LT trim, it's still a handsome SUV. Remember that the LT is only one step above the base-model LS.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan has a bolder exterior and enhanced standard technology inside. So the compact SUV that offers an available third-row of seating is refreshed for this model year. Both looking at and driving the new Tiguan is impressive. Because the new model is a major contrast to the very first Tiguan introduced in the United States. Additionally, Tiguan has become Volkswagen's best-selling vehicle. Both here in the United States and globally! And that makes all kinds of sense as you'll see as we unpack this review. ⇒ Ontario Volkswagen is Southern California's VW HQ ⇐ 2022 VW Tiguan Top-3: Styling Interior Drive ⇒ Continue reading below or click PLAY To LISTEN. ⇐ '22 VW Tiguan SEL w/ R-Line 2022 VW Tiguan - What's New The most noticeable 2022 Tiguan update is the bolder new front end. And it now comes standard with LED headlights. Moreover, that refreshed front end looks great with the LEDs. And when you go inside the update that is immediately appreciated is the Digitial Cockpit - now standard across all trims. 109.9" wheelbase and 186.1" overall length Trims And Prices Volkswagen provides four primary trim configurations to choose from for Tiguan 2022. 2022 VW Tiguan Trims & MSRPs: S $25,995 SE $29,495 SE R-Line Black $32,295 SEL R-Line $36,595 *Starting manufacturers suggested retail prices The 2022 VW Tiguan I drove is pictured in this review. And it's the SEL R-Line trim with 4Motion - what Volkswagen calls its all-wheel drive. And our thanks as always to our friends at Ontario Volkswagen in the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario California for providing the Tiguan for this review. Engine, Transmission, And MPG As The Peoples carmaker often does, it keeps it simple offering one engine and one transmission in the 2022 Tiguan. So, after you decide your trim configuration and options, all you need to select is 2WD or AWD/4MOTION. VW Digital Cockpit Standard Engine Under the hood, Tiguan includes an impressively quick 184 horsepower 2.0L inline turbocharged 4-cylinder. And it puts out 221 pound-feet of torque. Transmission Then that engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. And when you go with the two-wheel-drive option it's front-wheel drive. Or, you can opt for Volkswagen's 4MOTION. And that's what my test driver had - it's quick and nimble. Great fun to drive. Fuel Economy As you can expect, when you have a single-engine and transmission, the fuel economy range is pretty close. But when you go with 2WD you get 26 MPG combined. And that breaks down to 23 in the city and 30 on the highway. Conversely, with all-wheel-drive, you get a combined 25 MPG. Broken down that's 22-city and 29-highway. Finally, if you go with the R-Line AWD those numbers change slightly. Combined is 24 MPG with 21-city and 28-highway. Curb Weight: 3,765/3,856 lbs What's The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Look Like? So when it comes to the looks of the refreshed 2022 VW Tiguan - that's where I really take a step back. Because when Tiguan first hit the US market in 2008... I found it to be lacking in the department of aesthetical appeal. But fast-forward to now, and there's a night-and-day difference. It's great-looking, especially with its adjusted front-end. Plus, and it's difficult to display in an online image, but there's an available LED lightbar. It spans the entire grill - headlight to headlight and looks very cool. No doubt the 2022 Tiguan is a Volkswagen, but it's sharp. European sharp and athletic. 1,500 lbs towing capacity Inside '22 Tiguan Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit highlights the interior updates of the new Tiguan. But to be clear the rest of the interior is to be appreciated as well. Because, if you're a regular iDriveSoCal reader, listener, or watcher, then you know I'm a big fan of interior engineering. And VW's is almost always both tight and right.

A kid actor named Danny Cooksey stars in this episode. He will later go on to be on Diff'rent Strokes. After that he'll get to play the red headed white trash buddy of John Conner in Terminator 2, which was, I think we can all agree, is a turning point in cinematography and the best of the Terminator franchise. Anyway, in this episode, this poor kid…..got dubbed over. And he got dubbed over by a 62 year old Canadian voice actress named Billie Mae Richards….who you know best as the voice of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. So you need to ask yourself. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. KIA EV6 BOASTS 577 HP, 20 MINUTE CHARGING "The EV6 isn't Kia's first electric car, but it is the first to be built on the Hyundai Group's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), alongside the new Ioniq 5. The EV6 will be offered with either rear- or all-wheel drive and with the choice of two battery capacities." asys Roadshow: "At the top of the lineup is the performance-oriented EV6 GT, which comes standard with the larger 77.4-kilowatt-hour Long Range battery and dual-motor electric all-wheel drive. Combined thrust is estimated at 577 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. Mat the accelerator and the EV6 GT will sprint to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and onward to a top speed of 162 mph. Exclusive to the EV6 GT is an electronic limited-slip differential that improves traction and handling. Keep the battery above a 35% state of charge and the EV6 should also be able to tow up to 3,527 pounds. The entry-level EV6 and GT-Line come standard with a 58-kWh Standard Range battery, stepping two-wheel-drive power down to 168 hp and AWD to 232 hp. Kia estimates that, at best, a single-motor EV6 with the Long Range battery should cruise for up to 317 miles per charge " "Kia claims that all models, regardless of which battery is optioned, will be capable of charging from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes when using the 800V ultra-fast charger. And, if the EV6 is specified with the 77.4 kWh battery pack and 2WD, owners will be able to add 100 kilometres of range to the EV in less than four and a half minutes, which Kia says is around the same amount of time it takes to refuel a conventional ICE-powered vehicle." according to WhichCar: "The charging system of the EV6 is also said to move the game on, utilising an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that is capable of discharging the car batteries’ power to external devices through a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function. This V2L function can supply up to 3.6 kW to devices such as a TV or air-conditioning unit, effectively acting as a generator. Kia claims that thanks to the EV6’s long wheelbase, which measures 2,900mm, and the flat-floor design that the EV’s architecture allows for, the result is an interior size similar to a medium to large size SUV. Dual 12-inch curved digital displays blend into one seamless strip across the car’s interior fascia, with one taking the place of a conventional dashboard and the other acting as a touchscreen interface for the infotainment system. On Tuesday, the Japanese marque revealed the LF-Z Electrified concept car, which is all about charting the company’s course into an electric future." says The Verge: "The company said Tuesday it will introduce 20 new vehicles by 2025 and that just 10 of those will be all-electric, hybrid, or run on hydrogen. The company has played a very conservative hand here at the beginning of what is, by its own admission, a massive transformation in the industry. And while there are certain advantages to that strategy — like not spending dozens of billions of dollars — the LZ-F is a good reminder of some of the disadvantages, too." https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/30/22357789/lexus-lf-z-electrified-concept-car-ev-toyota-electric TESLA AND TOYOTA TO REVISIT OLD PARTNERSHIP "A recent report from an esteemed South Korean publication has suggested that Tesla and Toyota are poised to revisit an old partnership to develop an all-new electric vehicle. The partnership has reportedly been under review since last year." according to Teslarati: " the upcoming partnership between Tesla and Toyota would likely result in the development of a small electric SUV. Toyota is reportedly providing the vehicle platform in the partnership, while Tesla will supply some of the EV’s electronic control platform and software." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-toyota-ev-partnership-report/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQS ACHIEVES 4 MI/KWH WITH 0.20 DRAG COEFFICIENT "That’s comparable to the 4.5 mi/kWh Lucid promises the Air will achieve. Tesla and EPA state the Model S Long Range can achieve 402 miles with its 100 kWh battery pack. That translates into a 4.02 mi/kWh energy efficiency if you run your car past the 0 percent warning and until it stops, according to Tesla engineers." says InsideEVs: "The EQS beats that: with more than 435 miles of range – probably according to WLTP standards – for its 108 kWh battery pack, it reaches 4.03 mi/kWh. It’s close to what Tesla offers, but it means more than just that in Mercedes-Benz's case." https://insideevs.com/news/497543/mercedes-benz-eqs-4-mi-kwh/ FORMULA E UNVEILS ELECTRIC MINI SAFETY CAR FOR SELECT RACES "Formula E will use a modified all-electric Mini as its safety car this season ahead of its parent company BMW quitting the series. This move for the remainder of the 2021 season comes as Mini owner BMW will exit Formula E at the end of the campaign having “essentially exhausted the opportunities" to develop its technologies within the championship." says Motor1: "The Mini Electric Pacesetter has received styling tweaks, including a rear wing and flared wheel arches, that resemble the third iteration of the internal combustion-engined Mini Cooper JCW GP road car. It is 130kg lighter than the regular Mini Electric but runs the same 182bhp output to accelerate to 62mph in 6.7 seconds, six tenths quicker than the standard car. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab is definitely a vehicle that would be in my garage if I only had space. Because the full-size Silverado is Chevy's top-selling vehicle and it gets a lot of attention. Each year, there's always something new and improved about the truck. And it's packed with technology and innovation. Plus it's 100% a chameleon. By that I mean, you can get a totally basic Silverado. And that would be that will be a tough work truck. But you can also get one souped-up for on or off-roading in ridiculous style and capability. ✅ And my friends at Martin Chevrolet gave me the 2021 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab RST 4WD pictured in this review. And mine had the Z71 package off-road package. 2021 Chevy Silverado Top-3: Technology. Interior. Styling. Cherry Red Tintcoat 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Review New for 2021 Chevy Silverado brings a couple of key features that will light up everyone universally. Plus it offers a number of new options that are a bit more niche-specific. But they're sure to be enjoyed nonetheless. So, universal features will have everyone mouthing the word 'sweet' include: The multi-flex tailgate that's being brought over from GMC. And wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Plus there's a slew of additional new options. Including increased trailering capabilities and enhanced tech to monitor your trailering. Also, new available packages: All-Star Edition Plus, Texas Edition Plus, and LTZ Premium Texas Edition. And there are new colors including Oxford Brown Metallic, Mosaic Black Metallic, and Cherry Red Tintcoat - pictured in this article. Prices And Trims It's notable that there are more ways to equip a Silverado than I think anyone has bothered to compute. From trims to special packages and engines to drivetrains, plus cabs and beds. You can, and should, get your Silverado exactly as you like. '21 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trims: Work Truck (WT) Custom Custom Trail Boss LT RST LT Trail Boss LTZ High Country And starting MSRPs for the various trims range widely. For example on Chevy's website, I configured a minimally equipped WT for a starting price of about $26,595. Conversely, I also configured a High Country with all the whistles and bells for about $67,455. Moreover, that's before customizing any equipment or considering special packages. Engines, Transmissions, Towing, And MPG So, with all the trim options in mind, the engine options might surprise you. Because there are nine of those when you consider their various transmission pairings. Engine/Trans Options 4.3-liter V6 with 6-speed automatic and Active Fuel Management 5.3L V8 with 6-speed automatic With Active Fuel Management Without Active Fuel Management 5.3L V8 with 8-speed automatic With Dynamic Fuel Management Without Dynamic Fuel Management 5.3 L V8 with 10-speed automatic with Dynamic Fuel Management 6.2L V8 with 10-speed automatic with Dynamic Fuel Management 2.7L Turbo 4-cylinder with 8-speed automatic and Active Fuel Management 3.0L I-6 Turbo-Diesel with 10-speed automatic In addition to all that, as you can imagine, the fuel economy is all over the board. But good, overall. There is some criticism about the 4-cylinder. Not that it's not powerful but that it isn't very fuel-efficient. Fuel Economy Overall, the worst EPA estimated fuel economy would be 13 MPG in the city. And that's with the Trail Boss 4WD, 5.3L V8 paired with the 6-speed automatic without active fuel management. On the flip side, the best MPG comes from the 3.0L Turbo Diesel. Because it's rated, with 2WD, at up to 33 MPG on the highway. Mostly the MPG is in the mid-to-high-teens in the city and the low-to-mid-twenties on the highway. Maximum Towing Capacity And towing, Silverado 1500 can get downright beastly. Considering the 6.2L V8, with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque can drag up to ...

New Hyundai Santa Fe & Palisade have just overtaken new Sorento in the soft SUV heavy tow sweepstakes. Kia must be so thrilled they went with the old towbar, just a few months back... A few months back we learned new Sorento tows a maximum of 2000kg with a towball download limit of 200. At the time of the launch, Kia’s top product planning dude, Roland River,o told me this limit, which had originally been touted at 2.5 tonnes, was reigned in as a result of the towbar design. The platform and powertrains can handle towing 2500 kilos. Confirmation of that came today, with the platform-shared new Santa Fe running with 2500 kilos on peak tow capacity, and 200 on the download. That’s 25 per cent more tow capacity than current Sorento. Palisade, which is about 200mm longer, and has a 135mm longer wheelbase, as well as 70mm more track, and weighs about 100 kilos more, spec for spec - and which you’d think, therefore, made it a superior tow platform, offers a maximum of 2200 kilos, with 200 on the towball. The reason, I’m told: It’s a different platform. Palisade is also available as an eight-seater - which is interesting if you have a large tribe to transport. (You have to specify a seven- or eight-seat model when you buy - it can’t be converted from eight to seven and back, on the fly, like a Kia Carnival. Seven-seat Palisades are twin buckets in row 2, and a three-wide bench in row three, and eight seaters get a three-seat bench in rows two and three. Basically I just wanted to let you know all this, mainly about the towing, as soon as it was announced, because towing is such a serious consideration for so many of you, when it comes to selecting vehicles such as this. I rate all three of these large SUVs - they’re good real-world tow platforms and decent daily drivers. (Without entering planet insanity, with its 3.5-tonne tow capacities and attendant crazy compromises.) Sorento is essentially Santa Fe with different hair and makeup (both brands hate me saying that, but it’s true). Salient differences between the three being the tow capacities, the new eight-speed wet clutch DCT in the diesel Sorento and diesel Santa Fe. Eight-speed epicyclic auto in the Palisade V6 and Palisade diesel, as well as the Sorento and Santa Fe V6 variants. V6 Palisade is a 3.8 GDI with slightly higher outputs than the 3.5 multipoint V6 in the Sorento and Santa Fe. The V6 petrols are all 2WD, while the diesels are all on-demand AWD. Diesel is the pick in all three, in my view - better economy, better low- and mid-rev performance and AWD for the win there. Plus, the new DCT in Sorento and Santa Fe is pretty sweet. It’s essentially the same transmission they’re about to slip into the i30 N DCT. Full review on Palisade and new Santa Fe in coming weeks. Just wanted to share this with you as it breaks, lest you zig when you should’ve zagged on the showroom floor before Christmas.
In this episode we welcome a man who's smile we didn't think could get any bigger, but then he won the overall regional in his BMW E36 M3. It isn't often a 2WD car can make it to an overall podium, let alone an all out win, especially in the dumping rain and slippery conditions that Olympus 2020 had on offer. Mike Shaw and guests hosts Kelsey Stephens and Tedrick Mealy find out how he was able to pull if off and how he got started doing this crazy little sport that we all love.
Hello, and welcome to episode 156 of the EPST podcast. I'm your host, Larry Snow. This week, the topic is Winter Driving. I know it's not winter yet, but the days and nights are getting cooler, and just a couple of weeks ago New England area had its first snow. Winter will be here before you know it, so we felt it was the perfect opportunity to discuss Winter driving and secure transportation. Other drivers may have the option not to drive in winter weather, but not driving in icy and snowy conditions is not a luxury that most security drivers have. No doubt, driving in winter conditions can be challenging for all, including the Security Driver. An interesting metric from the ISDA Executive Vehicle & Secure Transportation Survey - Seventy percent of survey participants drive in winter conditions—this number aligns with the national (U.S.) average. These are some facts and statistics that support the dangers of driving in a winter environment. 17% of all vehicle crashes occur during winter conditions. (NHTSA, 2019) There are about 156,000 crashes annually due to icy roads. (Carsurance.net, 2020) Weather-related vehicle accidents kill more people annually than large-scale weather disasters. (The Weather Channel, 2018) It takes up to 10 times longer to stop on snow and ice than on dry pavement. (Geico Insurance, 2018) Freeway speeds are reduced by 3% to 13% in light snow and 5% to 40% in heavy snow. (FHWA, 2019) Each year, 24% of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement, and 15% happen during snowfall or sleet. (FHWA, 2019) More than 116,000 Americans are injured, and over 1,300 are killed on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement every winter. (Safe Winter Roads, 2019) Over 70% of the nation's roads are located in snowy regions, which receive more than five inches (or 13 cm) average snowfall annually. (FHWA, 2019) (Source: https://driving-tests.org/driving-statistics/) Type of Vehicle Driving, any form of driving, including winter driving, is a balance. For decades we refer to that balance as the Security Driver Triangle. The triangle is made up of three components: THE DRIVER, THE MACHINE, and THE ENVIRONMENT. When measuring driver capability, you cannot separate the vehicle from the driver; both contribute, along with the environment, to the driver and the principal's safety and security. A skilled security driver understands the effects that changes in the environment have on the vehicle driver combination. They work to anticipate vehicle behavior changes and are ready to maximize all of the vehicle's capability. They know that driving in winter conditions significantly decreases the vehicle's capability. The security driver understands various vehicles' characteristics and their limitations – any vehicle, including All Wheel Drive (AWD). There is a misconception of the capability of AWD and FWD in winter driving conditions. Most of the confusion comes from misinformation seen on T.V. Ads about AWD Vehicles. In one ad, the announcer talked about driving on "Black Ice," He mentioned that if you press the correct buttons or switches on the vehicle, you solve the problems created by driving on black ice. PURE BS – Keep in mind that black ice is defined as a road covered with ice – unless the vehicle he is selling can alter the laws of physics –driving on black ice is dangerous and a challenge. No matter what the T.V. ads show, no AWD or 4WD system will make up for a decrease in adhesion. When ice – snow – etc. creates less adhesion between the tire and the road, the vehicle's capability to go – stop – and turn is greatly diminished. A quick definition of AWD and FWD drive is in order. All-wheel drive refers to automatic four-wheel-drive systems where the vehicle selects two- or four-wheel drive based on road conditions. In slippery conditions, power is automatically directed to individual wheels with the best traction. This is especially helpful for getting out of snowed-in parking spots or tackling unplowed roads. However, drivers should keep in mind AWD does little to aid turning and braking on snow and ice. The problem is that most 4WD/AWD drivers think they have a vehicle that can defy the laws of physics. No matter what vehicle the security driver is in, stopping on snow and ice will require up to 10 times the distance as stopping in normal conditions, and driving onto an off-ramp during black ice or wintry conditions will require a lot less speed than usual. The driver will have to anticipate that lower speed before they get to the off-ramp. The Science of Winter Driving If you are an ISDA certified driver or have attended an old Scotti School or Vehicle Dynamics Institute training program, you have been trained and measured to use 80% of the vehicle's capability. That means that you can apply 80% of the vehicle's weight pushing on the center of gravity of the vehicle either in a braking scenario - turning scenario, or a combination of braking and turning. But when driving from dry conditions to ice (Black Ice), the traction to maneuver your vehicle decreases by 65%, so you suddenly have gone from an 80% driver to a 15% driver. This means you can only use 15% of the car to go stop and turn, not a pleasant thought. Let's use the science of driving and work the numbers to illustrate the danger of driving on ice or inclement weather. Consider that you were driving a Suburban that handles at .85 G’s., which means it can absorb 85% of the vehicle's weight, pushing on the vehicle's center of gravity. So if you were driving a 6000 pounds Suburban that can handle at .85 G.S., under normal conditions, meaning no snow or ice, when you move the steering wheel, the vehicle is designed to absorb 5100 pounds (.85 times 6000) pushing on the center of gravity, and as an 80% driver you can apply 4000 pounds (.80 X 5100 lbs) to the Suburban center of gravity and life will be good – exciting but good. A Scenario Let's create a scenario where you are driving a 6000-pound Suburban that handles at .85G's, and you move from dry conditions to icy conditions. Again, using the science of driving, the following explains why you and your principal's life is about to get exciting; who, we must keep in mind, pays you to drive him safely and securely. You are now driving a vehicle that has gone from being able to absorb .85 G's to accept only point .3GS or 30% of the weight of the vehicle; The .3 G's represents a 65% loss in your cars handling. So, now in a matter of tenths of seconds, you are driving a car that went from .85 G.S. know down to .3 g's, quick arithmetic tells us you can apply 1800 pounds to the center of gravity; once you get past that number, refer to the get exciting mentioned above. There is more bad news if you are an 80% driver - consider that you share that icy road with a substantial number of average drivers. The average driver, as we have talked about for decades, can use only 40 to 50% of the vehicles capability, which translates to that they can apply only 720 to 900 pounds on the Suburban's center of gravity before they slide off into the snow - hopefully not taking you with them. Consider this if you have attended a Scotti School or VDI training program in the last 10 to 15 years. Imagine that you cannot drive through the slalom course at a speed greater than 25 without losing control; that is the difference between driving on ice on drive pavement. Again, for those who have taken our training, we ask you to go back to the driver's equation. If the coefficient of friction between the tire and the road surface is low, you only have two options; you can decrease your speed and limit your steering. But, since you may have to use the steering to drive onto an off-ramp, your only real option is to lower your speed. Summary No 4WD or AWD system will make up for the 65% decrease in traction. If there is less adhesion between the tire and the road, the vehicle's capability is greatly diminished. But using some simple math, consider that when you were driving on icy roads, the coefficient of friction is very low, so having the capability to use 80% doesn't mean much because 80% of .1 is still a dangerous scenario. That's not to say that AWD is not useful in bad weather. It might be enough to get the vehicle up snow-covered hills and get the vehicle moving from a stop position where 2WD would not accomplish that. Although this has been said many times and many ways, stopping on snow and ice may require up to 10 times the distance as stopping in normal conditions. You can't beat the laws of physics, so the only way you can survive driving in these conditions is to keep the speeds down. ====================================== That will bring us to the end of another episode of the EPST podcast. There’s big money in dual-cab 4X4 pickups. In total, 170,000 4X4 pickups were sold here in Shitsville last year. I’ve got a ‘pop quiz’ for you in just a sec, to see how well you really understand the ute market. After that - at the end of this video I will share with you one vital (and potentially lifesaving) tip that a lot of ute buyers overlook - which is potentially a matter of life and death, and which the manufacturer will never tell you. Keep watching for that. Pop quiz: Of the top 10 utes, I can only identify two with factory fitted transmission coolers. Can you tell me which ones they are? Try this: There are two utes that have 4WD in high range for use on a high-traction surface, with the centre diff unlocked - one is AWD and the other is selectable - you can also use 2WD in high range. Any ideas which two utes I’m talking about? One ute in the top 10 does not come with low range. At all. One ute has wheel bolts - as opposed to studs - which is a bit of a bastard, trackside, I have to say. One ute is renowned for valve body failures in the transmission - actually, it’s two. Two utes have disc brakes all around. Any ideas? Only one of the top 10 4X4 utes is actually made in Japan. Any clues? One of the top 10 has not been crash tested since 2011 - but still claims five stars. The point I’m trying to make here is that there’s a lot of nuanced variation and certainly currently no perfect ute. Some utes are better at one thing and some are better at another, and some are decent all rounders that fail to shine at any one particular thing. (I’m looking at you, Hilux.) If you want to cut to the chase - my strong recommendation - based on solid objective criteria and lengthy analysis - is the current Triton. Great powertrain. Terrific reliability. Advanced transfer case functionality. Rear diff locker. Unbeatable value, currently. Excellent comfort, good cabin layout and plenty of interior space… But even here, Triton has an Achilles heel - and that’s all about fundamental load-carrying geometry in the tray. So even my best ute might not be the best ute for you if you’re a - literally - heavy user with big plans for a heavily loaded tray for work or long-haul touring or camping. I’ve just broken down the top 10 utes in the market in ‘Straya - top 10 4X4 dual cabs by sales, so far this year - and identified every salient feature I know of, which might be a potential ‘don’t buy’ trigger mechanism for you - depending on how you want to use your ute. My exclusive video and print report on the blog just there, includes around 30 minutes of deep-dive ute market dissection - totally ad-free, and unavailable anywhere else. If you don’t want a ute, that’s probably gunna be the miracle cure for insomnia, right there. But if you are thinking about spending the big bucks, this report could save you from making a $50,000 mistake - or more. I sincerely hope you will join me over there.
In this episode of the RallyCast presented by Oz Rally Pro we welcome back Chris Greenhouse. Although not seen as frequently on the American rally scene of late, Chris is one of the fastest 2wd competitors out there. We talked about social distanced rallying, his overall win at Central UP, and how he's looking forward to the depth of competition at the upcoming Southern Ohio Forests Rally. We even helped plant the seed of a potential run at the ARA Open 2WD championship. Grab a cold one and enjoy a chat with us at the virtual rally pub we call the RallyCast. Official Central UP Press Release: Greenhouse tops field at Central UP Rally Powers, MI, USA Chris Greenhouse and Ryan Scott took their Dodge Neon SRT4 to the overall win at their first attempt at Central UP Rally. Heavy rain created treacherous road conditions, but the team was undeterred and took the win not only against the 2-wheel-drive cars, but also against all of the much higher spec all-wheel-drive cars. For Chris, this was his second 2WD victory this season, but also his first ever overall win. Chris has competed exclusively in the 2WD class and scoring an overall victory in a 2WD car is a feat that's almost unheard-of in modern rally. "Conditions were not favorable at all," said Chris after the event. "Friday was absolutely gorgeous with clear, blue skies, but then the rain started and left a lot of mud and standing water on the stages, which do not drain well. We had to carefully choose our spots to push hard and our spots to be conservative. We had a few mistakes, including one on the last stage where we nearly rolled the car about 11 miles from the end of the event. Luckily for us, we escaped without damage." Ryan Scott was the recipient of the Diane Sargent Memorial Award, which was given to the fastest 2WD co-driver of the event. "I am honored to have been presented the Diane Sargent Memorial Award. Though, I was not fortunate enough to have met her, everything I have learned about her proves she was not afraid of a challenge and that she embodied the 'press on regardless' spirit we should all diligently work to cultivate in our own lives" The team would like to thank the organizing committee and volunteers who created new procedures to conduct the event under COVID-19 safety protocols. Chris and Ryan are now busy preparing for Southern Ohio Forest Rally next month, where they hope to extend their class winning streak to 3-in-a-row. 2020 Chevrolet Suburban Review The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban is wrapping up its 11th generation. That's right - 11! And, any given vehicle generation-cycle lasts around 6-years. So quick math tells you that the Suburban has been around for 66-ish years - right? Wrong. Because the first Chevrolet made with the Suburban name was in 1935! So, that's 85-years and counting! In fact, Chevy's Suburban is the longest-running nameplate in automotive history. And not only is Suburban rich with history but it's just a big fun vehicle to both drive and ride-in. From families to heads-of-state to group prom dates Suburban has hauled them all for years. Arguably Suburban is the original 3-row SUV. And that definitely holds true for 2020 because it seats up to 9! 2020 Chevy Suburban Top-3: Versatility Drive/ride Interior space So, when my pal Lewis Cook at Martin Chevrolet told me he had an extra I could test drive for this review I jumped at the chance. -->Continue reading or click play below to listen.

Show #432 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 1st April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. I sign up to a daily email called Chartable and it tells you how each Podcast does in the various charts. And how on earth has this happened, EV News Daily is the #1 Automotive podcast in the UK. There are three new Patreon supporters, hello to ROBERT SAUNDERS, new PRODUCER DON MILLER and EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OHAD ASTON MARCH SALES NUMBERS! From Matthias Schmidt: "#Tesla has become the first manufacturer to register >10,000 pure electric passenger cars in a single month in Western Europe" "7-in-10 of Norway's new car registrations in March were plug-in. - First month on record that a European market surpassed >10k BEV electric car registrations. HOWEVER Norway remains unrepresentative due to the tax structure, heavily favouring EV over ICE." "1,153 #Telsa #Model3 registered in France in March Model 3 mix of total BEV electric car registrations in March: 25% Top selling BEV model in France remained Renault Zoe: 1,254" TESLA MODEL 3 WAS #1 SELLING CAR IN NETHERLANDS IN MARCH 2019 "According to official stats, in March, the Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling car of any kind in the Netherlands with 2,195 new registrations (5.6% of all sales)." Says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "We failed to spot a single model that would be above 1,000 registrations, and we believe that the second-best plug-in model is below 500 (full sales report from the Netherlands is expected later this month). The results are amazing from all ways, but we must remember that Tesla had a high number of orders early and it’s too early to judge the demand from the initial outcome. In total, Tesla registrations stand at 2,209 in March (including 8 Model S and 6 Model X) and 2,761 YTD." https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-top-selling-car-netherlands/ PSA AND FCA IN TALKS TO JOINTLY DEVELOP ELECTRIC VEHICLES "After reporting in mid-March that PSA is targeting more acquisitions, Automotive News has now published new interesting information about the French manufacturer. The second-largest Europe-based automaker in 2018 measured by sales numbers is allegedly discussing a new partnership with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that will be focused on the development of electric vehicles, according to “people familiar with the talks.” According to Anthony Carr for Motor1.com: "Word on the street is the two auto giants are considering developing a “super platform” together, an architecture for EVs that will be used by all the brands within the PSA and FCA ranges. “People who asked not to be named as the matter is private” have told the online publication that the two automakers want to reduce investment costs and make their electric vehicles more profitable. A potential cooperation between PSA and FCA is also seen as the first step towards a full merger between the two automakers. PSA is believed to be very interested in such a move because of FCA’s exposure in the United States, where the French company will be making a full comeback by the middle of next decade. In addition, FCA also owns Jeep which is one of the most appealing marques in today’s industry." https://www.motor1.com/news/316225/psa-fca-electric-vehicles-talks/ BYD INTRODUCES 27-METER LONG K12A, THE ‘WORLD’S LONGEST PURE ELECTRIC BUS’ "BYD has introduced the K12A, a 27-meter (88.5 feet) long bi-articulated bus that it’s calling “the world’s longest pure electric bus.” The company introduced the K12A at its headquarters in Shenzhen, China. BYD’s K12A has a passenger capacity of 250 people and can reach a maximum speed of 70 km/h (about 44 mph). It has a range of 186 miles on a single full charge." Reports Phil for Electrek: "BYD claims the K12A is also the world’s first electric bus with a 4WD system that can “switch between 2WD and 4WD smoothly to meet the demands of different terrains, while also lowering the vehicle’s overall energy consumption.”" https://electrek.co/2019/04/01/world-longest-electric-bus/ VOLVO XC40 PURE ELECTRIC VERSION COMING THIS YEAR "It was a little over a year ago when Volvo announced plans for an EV onslaught with an aim for fully electric cars to make up 50 percent of the automaker’s total sales by the middle of the next decade. It looks like the XC40 is going to lead the way as representatives of the Swedish brand have told Automotive News Europe the pure electric variant of the small crossover will be revealed before the year’s end." Writes Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "Without going into any details about the zero-emissions XC40, Volvo announced plans to have its very first EV on sale by 2020 when the Tesla Model 3-rivaling Polestar 2 is also scheduled to hit the streets. The two models will have quite a lot in common as both are set to ride on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has also served as foundation for the Lynk & Co 01, 02, and 03 models. As a reminder, Lynk & Co is a new brand from Volvo’s parent company Geely, which also happens to own Lotus." https://www.motor1.com/news/316155/volvo-xc40-electric-version-2019/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… EVs are connected cars, but how much do you think we should value convenience vs privacy? From Tuesday October 30th 2018. In this show we had our Lake Superior Performance Rally review with Al Dantes Jr. of Tower City Race Team and Michael Hooper the 2WD winner of LSPR and now the Rally America 2WD overall champion! We chatted about the event and the crazy changing conditions, something called the Sisu Challenge, and other bits of rally news.
The hiatus is over, and the first show of the new 2WD podcast season has Carl and Spencer Bogad teaming up to talk with Fast Plastic legend, Joel DeRoche. Before Joel, Carl and Spencer caught up and made some predictions, reminisced about past episodes, and talked about Jim Kelly. California wiffler and Fast Plastic National Champion, Joel DeRoche then joined. The Sport Science star talked about his highs and lows, talking trash to a Dodger, how his state stacks up nationally, and much more! DeRoche interview: 18 minute mark
Trent hosts the big 6-0, with Caleb Jonkman as the 2nd Dude and the guest. Caleb first appeared on 2WD in Dublin last July, and since then, he has only gotten more known throughout wiffle nation. He plays in LWA, ORWBL and GBL, and is quickly becoming an NWLA Tournament 2-way stud.

Episode 48 was given the honor to be the first media platform to unveil the 2017 NWLA Tournament Regional Schedules. There will be a video of the random drawing, and the schedule will obviously be on the tournament website, but 2WD is here to give it to you first. Justin Tomkins hopped on for the first segment, and he quickly ran down each of the 14 regional team’s schedules. Jeremy Ray from the Huntington Wiffleball League then joined the show. He talked about which format he likes best for the HWL, how he doesn’t feel bad for the tough luck HWL has had in the NWLA Tournament, and the future of his league. Great show!
Longtime rivals, Mike Boyles and Josh Smith faced off on Episode 46, but as per usual, 2WD brought people together. Everyone acted friendly, but it was still very entertaining. Before Mr. Mequon joined us, Josh and Carl talked about the new NWLA Tournament Regional format. Give it a listen wiffle nation, shall you?
