Is the 'human touch' in business becoming obsolete in the age of AI? This episode of AI Chronicles, features Diana Wu David and Fedhz Mamaril. They collaborate together at Future Proof Lab, providing workshops and courses to help leaders navigate disruptive futures and harness technology trends. Given this podcast is about the applied use of AI on the workplace, it was super interesting to speak with two people who collaborate on a daily basis and are introducing AI into their workflow. The conversation covers practical applications of AI in their work as the creators of content and experiences, including design tools like Canva and language models like ChatGPT and Claude. They discuss how AI has streamlined processes, such as producing masterclass replays with transcripts and content snippets - activities which once took several hours can now be done in minutes. A theme which emerged several times throughout the conversation is the importance of maintaining human touch in their work, especially in the context of the relational aspect of community management and the creative writing process. Looking to the future, Diana and Fedhz envision AI enhancing learning experiences and enabling more creative business experimentation, given how much more quickly and cheaply an MVP version of a product or course can be developed and tested. However, they give us a reality check in that they have tried using the latest crop of tools to create courses, and the promise doesn't quite live up to expectations just yet. Much has been written about the Great Resignation where people have left their jobs in search of more meaningful work and personal fulfillment. We are at a critical juncture in history; how we work, where we work, and when we work, are all being redefined. What might work look like when the dust is settled and how can we help to reshape the culture? In this episode of One Vision, Theo, along with guest co-host, Danielle Guzman, chat with Diana Wu David, Future of Work strategist and author of Future Proof, on finding purpose and our place in the future. As Oprah Winfrey once said: “The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance — and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.” It's time to seize the opportunity to reboot and commit to creating a better future, together.

OC28: Community: Building on the Experiences of 2020 with Diana Wu David Diana Wu David is a strategist, innovator, entrepreneur and the author of Future Proof Reinventing Work in the Age of Acceleration. Her diverse global career includes assisting Henry Kissinger and leading executive education initiatives for the Financial Times. A super-connector of people and sought after speaker, Diana lives in Hong Kong. Diana likens the experience of 2020 to training at high altitude. We have all accelerated, learned a lot about ourselves and are poised to put that learning into good use in 2021.Diana believes the experience of 2020 has elevated the importance of community. As jobs become more transient the need to invest in a community with longevity is increasingly vital. Community helps us craft our own story, try something out before launching to a wider body, celebrate wins and know there are others who will look out for us. Diana explores her experience of cultivating and contributing to a successful community. She says building community takes time; there has to be a common purpose; members must contribute and champion the concept. In time the community will take on its own form and direction without the need for the originator to constantly broadcast.Diana believes that semi-private professional networks will grow and become an increasingly important part of building a successful professional life. Building a web of support which is separate from an employer.Diana draws on her experience with the Kissinger Institute and how this taught her the value of connection, how to learn through people, and the importance of character. Diana leaves us with three areas of our lives to consider as we start 2021 Vitality: both physical and mentalConnection: Investing in meaningful relationshipsContribution: professional and communityHaving something to look forward to in each of these areas will set us up for a successful and fulfilling year.A huge thank you for listening and wishing all of you a very happy, healthy and hopeful 2021! Learn how to identify your own path to the future! This was a very timely interview with Diana Wu David. Diana is the author of the new book, "Future Proof: Reinventing Work in the Age of Acceleration." Our discussion was all about what she is seeing in the business world as technology, work and life intersect, pushing our lives in entirely new directions. You will also hear about her own research among companies, large and small, as she works with their leadership, their boards and their staff to enable them to adapt to the fast pace of change. As you know, at SAMC we're all about change! Great tools here...enjoy. What do you have to do to change? According to Diana, in order to change, we need to adopt more agile mindsets and practices so we can become successful agents of our own lives, not just our careers. She says that today's blend of a person’s at-work and out-work life is creating new lives for us all. And new, younger generations are redefining their relationships to those they work with and the organizations they work in, which is adding another layer of change to the mix. Change is pain but we must do it! Can you "see" where you are going? Diana was in Hong Kong when we did our podcast but it was like we were sitting next to each other. We both work with clients globally, so this was very natural. In fact, these days there really are few boundaries except of our own making. In this podcast, you'll learn more how to eliminate those boundaries that are holding you back. As a futurist, and a realist too, Diana's forte is helping people see what is happening all around them. Through her Future Proof Lab, participants are shown how to identify their own path to the future, something we all need to think about as many of us will live to 100, well past that retirement day. Learn how a nomadic mindset helps you see where you are going! I was introduced to Anthony Willoughby by Diana Wu David after our podcast interview. She said, “You just must meet Anthony. He will take you on his adventures around the world where people learn to build their trust and their abilities to work together.” So I did! As you will hear, Anthony grew up in Africa, wandered the world, and much like an anthropologist, learned how to observe, listen and learn from different cultures, particularly nomadic tribes. This led him to found the Nomadic School of Business, whose concept of a nomadic mindset helps leaders and their teams achieve clarity, purpose and agility. There's so much to apply to your own teams...enjoy. Do you and your team understand and embrace change and disruption? Have you created a culture that welcomes change? Can you engage, unite and empower a diverse collection of individuals? If you answered no to some or all of these, you might really benefit from watching and listening to my conversation with Anthony. Your big takeaways are going to come from learning about the power of stepping out of your comfort zone and building real trust with others. You'll hear how Anthony has worked with large organizations, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at the Great Wall of China, as well as small groups, most notably the Maasai in Kenya. But regardless of their size or scope, their interests or challenges, Anthony and his Nomadic School of Business offers a transformative experience for the individuals who immerse themselves in one of his programs. Check out the video of our podcast here: Offering a fresh worldview, a new perspective What is unique about Anthony's approach to corporate team-building is the way he creates learning adventures where leaders can open their minds to each other, building trust and clarity in their organizations. These adventures are built around a team's territory mapping experience and a leadership trust wheel. Together, these two processes enable team members to understand, own and assume greater responsibility for the delivery of critical strategic objectives of their organization. As I have been to Kenya, and the Great Wall of China, it was easy for me to see the power of these venues to take people away from “the way we always do it” syndrome and open their minds to what “we could do.” No, I have not gone on a nomadic experience with Anthony — yet — but I might indeed do some wandering with him soon. The photos below capture the territory mapping exercise by the Maasai and participants in Anthony's Nomadic School of Business. What is a nomadic mindset? Recognize and accept that your environment is changing Identify as an agile group that moves toward opportunity Harness the wisdom of your community to make decisions One thought I want to leave you with This New Guinea chief (at left) had an amazing headdress. When Anthony asked him why it had so many feathers, he said, “To give them away." In that moment, Anthony learned that the power of a chief is in giving away his wealth, not accumulating it. Now more than ever, there is so much to learn from other cultures about how to build communities where trust unites us, and where sharing creates benefits beyond what any of us can get on our own. Get to know Anthony Willoughby Raised in Africa and schooled in the UK and the US, Anthony was 22 when he bought a one-way ticket on the Trans-Siberian Express to Japan in search of inspiration, adventure and opportunities. In 1982 he took his first journey to the highlands of Papua New Guinea to stay with the Chimbu Tribe. There, he discovered how important a territory is to a tribe and its leaders, and how a map can provide power and clarity to different cultures and debates. It was during this expedition that he encountered a persistent complainer, which led him to establish his "I Will Not Complain" team-building and leadership development programs in Japan in 1989 and in China in 1992. In the years since, Anthony has developed a visualizing process called “Territory Mapping,” inspired by conversations with tribal chiefs in remote villages in Papua New Guinea and Kenya. This process has been described as a method that " enables you to crash through civilization and see where you are and where you are going with new clarity.” Anthony has ridden paddle steamers down the Nile, was briefly a bullfighter, and has scaled some of the world's biggest peaks, such as China’s 7,546-meter Mount Mustagh Ata, without porters or oxygen. Now based in the UK, he makes regular trips to Africa and Europe, delivering programs and expeditions for individuals, and spreading the word about the Nomadic School of Business. His clients have included AIA, Ogilvy, AXA, Mars, Qatar Airways, IBM, Ferrari, Dyson, London Business School, Chubb, and Google. As leaders we need to prepare for the future the best we can. It's impossible to foresee events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the 2008 financial crisis, or even a key person leaving the organization but we can develop the skill sets to adapt, adjust, and overcome to ensure the impact is minimal. Leading into the future means that we as leaders do our best to ensure that our people and our organizations are set up for success. Diana Wu David is a former Financial Times executive, author of Future Proof: Reinventing Work in an Age of Acceleration, and adjunct professor at Columbia Business School EMBA Global Asia. She works with global leaders to enhance their ability to adapt, contribute, collaborate and grow and with organizations and boards that seek a competitive edge by enhancing leadership and engaging multi-generational talent. Diana Wu David has had a diverse professional background. She studied international relations in college and after graduation, answered a job ad that landed her a role working for Dr. Henry Kissinger, who served as Secretary of State and National Security Advisor to US Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. From there she went to business school and followed a traditional route of working as a management consultant and in several start-ups. Life took a sudden turn when a close friend committed suicide and she decided to make several meaningful changes in her professional and personal life. Her book, Future Proof: Reinventing Work in an Age of Acceleration, draws from her experiences and from that of others who have reinvented their careers to more meaningful and fulfilling paths. In this episode we discuss: How Diana’s journey took her from “doing the right thing” in the corporate world and then eventually into entrepreneurship. Her journey to working for Henry A. Kissinger that began with her responding to an anonymous ad in a newspaper. How Diana ended up living and then staying in Hong Kong. How losing a close friend started shifting her mindset about what life and work were really about, and how that shift eventually led to her leaving the corporate world. Diana’s expanded learning since owning her own company, especially with regard to self-awareness, balance, and living life with intention. How she uses approaches like journaling to evaluate what is important to her and guide her decisions. Listen, subscribe and read show notes at www.tammygoolerloeb.com/podcasts/ - episode 019
