I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 19th of April, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Book of Job 19:25: “For I know that my Redeemer lives,And He shall stand at last on the earth…”Do you know that your Redeemer lives this morning? Do you know that He will be standing on this earth at the last? We go straight to the Book of Romans 8:11:”But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,(thats the Holy Spirit) He (the Holy Spirit) who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” What an incredible scripture! Oh, my dear friends, we need to believe, we need to know He is not in the grave, He is alive. We need to believe that! We have a saying here at Shalom, “One genuine miracle equals a thousand sermons”. Jesus was known by His miracles that He performed, not so much by the sermons He preached, He preached very few that are recorded, but the signs and the wonders and the miracles - He is the Miracle-Worker!I just want to tell you again, you have heard my story more than once but it is worth telling again. It was down in Ein Gedi, the lowest point on earth. It was in 2012. It was so hot, we were drinking water that was coming out of our bodies as we were drinking it. I think it was well over 40 degrees. It must have been 8 o'clock at night. I was asked to bring the message. There were 5,000 delegates from all over the world, something like 80 nations gathered together. I was reading from the Book of Acts, the account of the disciples in the upper room when the Holy Spirit came upon them. I was so in love with the Lord that night and so full of faith. I said, “Lord, please do it again.” When I think back on it, what would have happened if He didn't? Well, He did, so I don't have to even think about all the egg that would have been on my face. I walked around the front of the lectern and a mighty rushing wind started blowing. Folks, it blew so hard, blowing the musical instruments off the platform and then it started to rain. It doesn't rain in that place, it is dry, it is like the moon, there is nothing there. Those palm trees are being irrigated from miles and miles away. The Lord visited us. And I want to tell you, I did not have to make an altar call, I didn't have to tell people to come forward to repent, they ran to the front. Some of those ladies were lying in the dust, just rejoicing in the faithfulness of God. Jesus is alive! Tomorrow, Resurrection Sunday, we will celebrate the fact that our God is not dead, He is not in the grave, He is alive!Jesus bless you and goodbye.
I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 2nd April, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of Luke 1:37, and a very special verse for you today. It says: “For with God nothing will be impossible.” What are you trusting the Lord for today? Nothing? Well then, you will get nothing! I am trusting the Lord today for a miracle. Oh yes, every morning is a miracle. Now, Mary was told by the angel that she was going to have a baby and she said in verse 34 of the same chapter, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” “I have never slept with a man and you are telling me I am going to have a baby?” The angel of the Lord said in verse 37: “For with God nothing will be impossible.” I want to ask you a very serious thing today. Do you believe in miracles?Don't ever write off a promise that the Lord Jesus Christ has given to you and stop calling miracles coincidences. There is no such thing as a coincidence. It is so sad that people struggle to believe in a miracle from God. They are always trying to explain it away instead of simply believing it. You know, many of you listening to this message were maybe there, but a few years ago I had the privilege of speaking at the Feast of Tabernacles, down at the Dead Sea at a place called Ein Gedi. It was a hot, humid night. I read the account of the visitation of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room. Just as we are thinking about the approach of Easter, and the disciples were gathered together and they were petrified. They were hiding because they were being sought by the Romans and being slaughtered, and a rushing mighty wind came through the Upper Room and tongues of fire settled on each one's head and they began to speak in other languages and the power of God came upon them. As I finished reading that incredible incident, I walked around the front of the lectern and I said, “Please Jesus, do it again.” And He did it! Oh yes, He did it. Now some people said that was a coincidence that that wind came at that time because the wind does blow from time to time down in the lowest part of the earth, but folks, the timing at that time, and then it started raining. It never rains there. Some people will tell you it does rain occasionally but at that very moment, let's stop calling a miracle a coincidence. Let's start praising God and thanking Him for answered prayer. What is it that you want today? Lord, I pray for my friend who is listening to this message right now, who is depending on a mighty miracle in their lives. Lord, as they would put their trust in You, we thank You for answered prayer and for that miracle to take place. In Jesus name, amen.God bless you and believe it, it is on it's way,Goodbye.
The Dead Sea is one of the great natural wonders of the world. And the surrounding Judaean Desert has been the backdrop for some of the most exciting chapters in the history of the Land of Israel – from King David's Ein Gedi to Qumran's Dead Sea Scrolls, to the heights of Masada, and the pioneers of modern times. The Dead Sea is disappearing at an alarming rate – and the question is whether or not our grandchildren will vaguely remember the ‘Salt Sea' as they stand at the edge of a salt-encrusted crater. Our episode will explore the story of the Dead Sea and the environmental challenges facing the sea and all of us.Links for Additional Reading:Pollution in the Promised Land, Alon Tal, California University Press, 2002What Can We Do To Stop The Dead Sea From Dying? I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Sunday morning, the 25th of February, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of John 3:8: “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” It cannot be explained. We must believe it by faith and by faith alone so that no one can touch the glory of God. I remember it like yesterday, in Ein-Gedi, the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea, in September 2012. It was a night we will never, ever forget. I was standing on the platform, reading from the Book of Acts, where the rushing mighty wind came through the upper room and filled all the disciples with the Holy Spirit, and when I was finished, I was so overwhelmed by the goodness of God. There was a huge crowd, maybe 5000 delegates from 80 nations from around the world, and I stood in front of the lectern, and you can see it - is on video, and I said, “Lord, please do it again, Lord Jesus, do it again.” And I want to tell you there was a wind that came. We don't know which way it came from. My assistant, Clive, had to go and find my Bible. My Bible weighed about 2 kilos, and it flew off the lectern like a piece of tissue paper. The sound system started blowing away, the guitars, the drums, and the musicians were running onto the platform to try and rescue their equipment, and then when the wind was blowing at its fastest, it started to rain. Now folks, I need to explain to you. It doesn't rain in that area - very rarely. There are no trees there; it is dry and hot, but this wind blew. It was the most incredible experience I think I have ever had in my life. Now, I just asked the Lord Jesus to please do it again and folks, He did it.He loves you very much and He wants to fill you also with His Holy Spirit again, but if we look at the verse before, verse 7, Jesus said: “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.” What does that mean? It means to make a new start. It means to ask Him to come into your heart and rescue you from the things of this world. Maybe you have never asked Him into your heart. I would like to pray with you now, if I may. Please pray this prayer after me if you would like to:Dear Lord Jesus,There are many things I do not understand. I don't know where the wind comes from and I don't know where the wind goes to but I do know that the wind blows because I can feel it on my face. Lord, you said we must be born again so today I ask you to come into my life to fill me with your love and to start with me afresh. In Jesus' name,Amen.God bless you and have a wonderful Sunday,Goodbye.
In our last teaching we saw David confront Saul at the Oasis of Ein Gedi, and there we saw a great part of David's character revealed. One thing we saw revealed was his boldness, his courage and that he really trusted in God. He was able to stand up and confront Saul because he believed that God would defend him and that God would be in control. We also saw some of David's crafiness, and his wisdom and the words that he used. He chose not to kill Saul, and instead he chose to cut a part of his robe off. It showed that he never had any intentions of killing Saul, he always saw him as king. It showed his humility. We saw his character revealed through his humility. He said, “After whom do you pursue Saul? After a dead dog after a flea”. David is stressing his insignificant and his unimportance in the face of a great king. We saw Saul respond in a very interesting way. He said, no not at all, you are not insignificant, you are going to be king someday. It is shocking but it reveals Saul's insanity and that in times he had moments where he had it all together. But David knew that Saul would continue to come after him. Meanwhile, both David and Saul received a shock because their spiritual mentor, Samuel the profit, had died. David received this news while in the wilderness of Maon, and there had a very interesting encounter with a very beautiful and wise and crafty woman herself named Abigail, and there we will find ourselves in the setting of this episode's topic. A very good morning to you - I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, it is the 11th of March, 2023 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today."Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.“ 2 Corinthians 3:17Liberty wherever the Holy Spirit is found. Freedom! It comes from the love of the Holy Spirit that He puts into the lives of His children. I remember hearing a story of a very well-known preacher, David Wilkerson, the author of The Cross and The Switchblade. He went onto the platform at a very big meeting, stood there for a moment and then he walked off. He said, “There is no love here. The Spirit of God is not here. I cannot preach.” I want to tell you not to underestimate the Holy Spirit. You know, we are very quick to talk about God our Father, and we are very quick to talk about our friend, the Lord Jesus Christ but very often we forget about the Holy Spirit who is the Third Person in the Holy Trinity. He is for real. He is in this prayer room as I am speaking to you right now, I can feel Him, and He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. When Jesus went home to be with His Father, He said, “I will not leave you as orphans, I will send you My Holy Spirit and He will help you.” The Helper! So today, we need to understand that wherever the Holy Spirit is found, there is liberty. I remember speaking at the Feast of the Tabernacles, down at the Dead Sea, at Ein Gedi, where David hid from King Saul. It was a wonderful occasion, there were no less than eighty nations represented there. There were about five thousand delegates, maybe more, I don't know but the Spirit of the Lord was in that place. Now folks, I can only speak English and Zulu and that is about the sum total of it, but I want to tell you, we had eighteen interpreters that night. There were people from every nation you could think of, but you know in an instant when I met them we were friends, we were brothers and sisters in Christ, like we had known each other all our lives. I am talking about Chinese people from mainland China, Russians, Argentinians, Portuguese, Spanish, Africans, Australians, and New Zealanders, from all over the world. Within an instant - why? - because the Spirit of the Lord was there and it gave us liberty.Sadly to say, there are some people I have known for forty years and still, the closest I can get to them is a handshake, that is about all. There is no spirit of love there, just an association. Today remember, where the Spirit of God is, there is liberty and that is wonderful news. Have a fantastic day today as you meet up with a fellow believer.God bless you and goodbye.
The Bible, especially the Old Testament, was written in pictures! Whether or not people can get to Israel, they should still be able to visualize the land and the places mentioned in scripture. Through God's leading and provision, GTI is now partnering with former pastor Andy Cook. Andy has created a ministry called Experience Israel Now as well as the amazing visual resource of ibiblestock.org. He and Rich discuss how it all came about to offer hundreds of high quality photos and videos of the Holy Land to pastors and lay people alike. Andy also talks about Ein Gedi, the oasis in the Negev desert where David hid from King Saul. This is one of many examples of "mayim chaim" (living water) and the tangible example of the Living Water of Christ. OUR VIDEO TOUR of Israel continues this week with stops at several places that played key roles in history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAiVxtj4mA4 First, we enter the Jordan River and explain why we baptize. Next, we tour Masada, site of the final battle between Jewish rebels and the Roman legions in A.D. 70. Then it's on to Ein Gedi, where David cut the hem from Saul's robe while the king relieved himself in a cave. Then we visit Qumran, where Jim Barfield of the Copper Scroll Project shared highlights of his research—which, if he's right, could spark a geopolitical earthquake! Finally, we stopped at Shiloh, where messianic Rabbi Zev Porat showed us “Jesus” and “Messiah” in the prayer of Hannah (1 Samuel 2), and where we saw in an otherwise cloudless sky what we can only describe as the wings of the cherubim—right over the place where the Tabernacle stood for more than 300 years. DAVID'S FLIGHT from Saul led both men to take desperate action: David sought refuge among Israel's mortal enemies, first the Philistines and then the Moabites, while Saul ordered the slaughter of the priests of the tabernacle because they unknowingly helped David escape. The difference between the two men is highlighted by the incident in a cave at Ein Gedi, a site on the west side of the Dead Sea. David had the opportunity to kill Saul while the king relieved himself, unaware that David and his men were hiding at the back of the cave. Instead of taking the king by surprise, David cut off a corner of the king's robe as proof that Saul had been in David's power, but he had forbidden his men from lifting a hand against the Lord's anointed. As we'll see in the weeks ahead, Saul's gratitude to David for sparing his life didn't last very long. Get our new app! The area surrounding Ein Gedi, near the Dead Sea, is bleak. Desert scenes and HOT temps! It isn't a place you'd go just for fun. It really wasn't fun when David was hiding from King Saul. The guy who whipped a rock at Goliath's head was already a legend among the people. Saul couldn't stand that, and so he did what power-hungry leaders do: he decided to eliminate the competition. David hid from the King's henchmen for a long time, eventually settling south of Jerusalem, in a bleak place. Sitting there looking up at the stars in the night sky, he wrote some of the most famous words of all time, words that comfort us to this day. Psalm 23:5 says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Ein Gedi is an oasis in the desert. Cool water flows from the cliffs into deep pools, and green plants hang from the rocks. It was here that David first understood just how far God's mercy and grace go. It was here he felt the presence of the Lord in a powerful way. He fed David there, in the wilderness, even as the King's men hunted him all around. God treats us the same way. He loves us through the terror, and provides for us in our own times of hardship. Let's pray. Lord, your mercies follow us everywhere. We thank you for your provision, all the time. In Jesus' name. Amen.

A very good morning to you! It is Monday morning, 6th June 2022, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. If we go straight to Acts 2 and I am reading from verse 1:“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”That's right - Yesterday, Pentecost Sunday, the Helper came. Yes, He did!He is known in Greek as Paracletos, the Helper. You know, Jesus said in John 16:7, it is to our advantage that He goes back to His Father so that He can send His Holy Spirit to comfort us, guide us in truth and give us His peace. I personally experienced an encounter with the Holy Spirit visiting us in Israel, at Ein Gedi, the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, on 30th September 2012, at approximately 9 o'clock in the evening, when I was speaking to a group of pilgrims who had come from all over the world. I am talking about something like eighty nations represented. It was hosted by the Christian Embassy from Jerusalem. It was an encounter that I shall never, ever forget, as long as I live. There were about 5,000 delegates there and we all witnessed it together. I had read from Acts 2, as I have just done for you and then I said something. I said, “Lord Jesus, please do it again,” and a rushing mighty wind came from nowhere and just about blew us off the platform! Oh, my dear friend, He is the Comforter. I want to tell you today, to speak to Him. Allow Him to comfort you, to put His loving arms around you. You know, in my prayer room, I have got a little wood stove, here in South Africa we are in the middle of winter now and in the morning it is sometimes zero degrees, maybe one degree... and I come into this little prayer room and I start a little wood fire. It warms me, it comforts me and it brings me lots of joy. Let the Holy Spirit do that for you even today.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

Recognize that the Lord may be using another person or circumstance to develop you as a person or to take you to another level as a leader. (18:10, 19:9) Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don't try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. James 1:2-4, MSG2. God does not want us to do wrong to relieve our pressure or crisis. (24:5-7; 2 Sam. 1:14-16) 3. We can take a long time to overheat when we trust God to work out his plan in his time. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.”James 1:2-4, MSGFrom Randy's message we see at times it is a person who is the test, challenge, and pressure the challenges our faith. We can call these "sandpaper people." At times God uses them to sand off the rough edges and reshape our character.1. Who are the sandpaper people in your life? What is an example of how that person challenges your character?2. Do you have a story of someone in your past who was a challenge to your character and possibly your faith? How did God use that person to mature and develop you?3. When you interact with your "sandpaper person" and the temperature goes up for you emotionally, what do you think that reveals about your own character? What do you think God may be teaching you?4. Spend some time as an individual or as a group to pray over a couple of things. Ask God to help you see this person as a gift in your life. Ask him to clearly reveal what needs to change in your own heart and character. And ask him to bless that person and matured them just as he is working in you. And Saul left the cave and went his way. 1 Samuel 24:4-71 Samuel 26 – The Hill of Hakilah 8 Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won't strike him twice.” 9 But David said to Abishai, “Don't destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord's anointed and be guiltless? 10 As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “the Lord himself will strike him, or his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. 11 But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord's anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let's go.” 1 Samuel 26:8-11Application 1. (26:9-12) Who or what is the Saul in your life right now? Going Deeper“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don't try to get out of anything prematurely. And a very good morning to you! It is Tuesday morning, 22nd of February, the year 2022. And we go straight to the Gospel of John, this is what it says:“Now the Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.”John 7:2 Just that far. Then down to verse 10 of the same chapter:“But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.”Jesus was asked to go up to the Feast of Tabernacles with the disciples but He went secretly, why? Because He knew the Jews were plotting to kill Him. I want to say to you today that we need to make a decision. Do we believe that Jesus Christ is indeed the Son of God?You see, if we go on to verse 12 it says:“And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, "He is good"; others said, "No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.”I want to tell you, and I mean it from my heart... I am sitting in my prayer room and I am remembering what happened to me on 30th September 2012 when I was invited to be the speaker at the Feast of Tabernacles, at Ein Gedi, on the Dead Sea in Israel. I was invited by the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem (ICEJ). It was a very, very warm evening, over 40 degrees at 7 p.m. - Remember, it is the lowest point on earth. It doesn't rain there, the wind doesn't blow there - It is dead in more ways than one.I went up onto the platform and I started reading from Acts 2:2-3 and this is what it says:“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.”When I had finished reading that, I closed my Bible, I was so excited. I was in Jesus country... I said, “ Lord, please do it again!” - And oh my dear friend, He did it! Yes, He did! A rushing mighty wind came like I have never seen before. It blew the side screens down, it started blowing the equipment off the platform - all the guitars and the keyboards! Now, I want to ask you a question today. Was that a coincidence or was that a God-incidence? I am telling you that there are people that will still say to you, “No, that was just a coincidence.” Folks, why didn't the wind blow an hour before the meeting? Why didn't the wind blow two days afterwards... It blew right at that very moment and then it started to rain. Now, it doesn't rain there, it is like the moon. There is nothing there. You see, up to that time, many people said, “Is He the Son of God?” And they argued. I want to tell you people are still doing that today but we need to understand one thing: Jesus Christ is coming back very, very soon and we need to believe and we need to be ready.I am telling you, I couldn't sleep that night. They took me back up to Jerusalem to my hotel. I lay on my bed the whole night - I was weeping, I was laughing, I was praying. Jesus Christ visited us that night.Jesus bless you.Goodbye.

When hostilities broke out in May between Israel and Hamas, 13 Israelis were killed and more than 300 others were wounded. Staff from OneFamily, an Israeli charity with strong Canadian roots, which offers support to terror victims in Israel, swung into action, visiting hospitals and figuring out what resources were needed. It's been this way for 20 years, over which time their annual hike across Israel—happening this week, spearheaded by the charity's Canadian branch—has become a signature event. This year, hikers are hoping to raise $300,000 as they trek the hills of the Ein Gedi nature reserve with some victims of terrorism and their families. It's a smaller group than usual, with just 29 Canadians and a couple of Americans, due to the pandemic. However, as usual, the hike still brings the charity's volunteers face-to-face with the Israeli families supported by their efforts and donations. They tackle the terrain together—even if some of the hikers are in wheelchairs. OneFamily supporters Bruce Cowley and Robyn Mirsky join today, along with the organization's executive director, Toby Rosner. What we talked about: Read more about Lt. If we go to 1Chronicles chapter 1 and you can go on for a few chapters... It is the family tree of the Jewish people. And of the believer, the Christian, starting with Adam. But what is more important than that is to have our roots firmly planted in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.If we look at 2 Corinthians 5:17:“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”I have the privilege of speaking, often, at the Feast of Tabernacles in Israel. It is hosted by the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem and Christian believers from all over the world attend.I am talking about places like Mainland China, Russia, Nigeria, Argentina, Brazil, Finland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Germany and we could go on and on... They are all one family, united in Jesus.I remember the one night preaching at Ein Gedi - the Dead Sea (the lowest point on earth, 400 meters below the sea, can you believe it?) and I think there were eighteen interpreters. You could hear a buzz in the air... all united in the love of Christ - one family! A few years ago Jill and I were visiting Israel and we went to the Mount of Beatitudes. It overlooks the Sea of Galilee where Jesus preached his famous and wonderful sermon in Matthew 5. There were vendors with little stalls outside the church, which commemorates the sermon, selling fruit and curios. There was one fine-looking old gentleman with swarthy coloured skin and a beautiful white beard selling fruit. Jill and I bought some fruit from him. I asked him, “Sir, do you love Jesus?” And he said, “Yes, I am a believer.” And then I asked him if he was an Arab believer, or was he a Jewish believer. He looked at me with those lovely brown eyes and he said, “I am a believer.” I then got a bit of a knock in the ribs from Jill and realized that it doesn't matter whether he is an Arab or a Jew - If he loves Jesus, he is part of the family of God.Today, go out and love people - bring them into the saving knowledge of Jesus. It doesn't matter what colour your skin is. Black, white or brown, if we love Jesus, we belong to one family - those are our roots!Have a lovely day. God bless you and goodbye.

The Group now finds itself in Ein Gedi, a natural Oasis. It is here that David hid from King Saul, where Josaphat fought the Moabites and Ammonites, and where Song of Songs speaks of vineyards. Join in as Hans gives a powerful message on God’s faithfulness through the desert.
The area surrounding Ein Gedi, near the Dead Sea, is bleak. Desert scenes and HOT temps! It isn’t a place you’d go just for fun. It really wasn’t fun when David was hiding from King Saul. The guy who whipped a rock at Goliath’s head was already a legend among the people. Saul couldn’t stand that, and so he did what power-hungry leaders do: he decided to eliminate the competition. David hid from the King’s henchmen for a long time, eventually settling south of Jerusalem, in a bleak place. It was here that David first understood just how far God’s mercy and grace go. It was here he felt the presence of the Lord in a powerful way. He fed David there, in the wilderness, even as the King’s men hunted him all around. God treats us the same way. He loves us through the terror, and provides for us in times of hardship. Let’s pray. Lord, your mercies follow us everywhere. We thank you for your provision, all the time. Amen.
When our children were toddlers, and we brought them into an unfamiliar situation, like a wedding or graduation party, they would often hide behind my legs when someone tried to talk to them. When little ones feel uncomfortable, they look for safety by clinging to a parent. In Psalm 57, David reflects on the time he had “fled from Saul, in the cave.” This could be the cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22) or the cave in the Desert of Ein Gedi (1 Samuel 24). David prays, “Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge” (57:1). It would seem that the cave was his refuge. But David knew better. God is a far more secure place to hide. David describes God as a mother bird who protects her young by spreading her wings (v. 1). David was in a difficult situation. He describes his flight from Saul as being “in the midst of lions; ...men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords” (v. 4). Yet in the midst of this violent onslaught, David expresses confidence in God’s great love and faithfulness (v. 10). Even though David has not experienced deliverance yet, his confidence in God makes him want to break out in praise, “I will sing and make music, Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn” (vv. 7–8). David wanted others to join him in this praise. He called out to other nations and peoples to hear about the glory of God (v. 9). In a world where each nation worshiped their own deities, David affirmed that the God of Israel is actually the God over all nations and peoples. His glory is over “all the earth” (v. 11). >> We all long for safety and security. Life is full of potential dangers and disappointments. David models for us a way to lament as well as express confidence in God’s faithfulness. The Lord is our refuge and strength.

The Dead Sea lies at the lowest elevation on earth. And in the arid valley that stretches to the salt lake's western shore sits Ein Gedi, a nature preserve and oasis that ranges from lush, spring fed gardens, to parched craggy rock, dotted with palm trees. Here, among this barren but beautiful landscape, a massive stage is perched amid the dusty rocks, complete with giant video screens and dazzling light displays. It looks more like a docked spaceship than a concert venue. What is normally a peaceful desert scene is now blanketed by the rumbling of a tour bus convoy, and a bank of electricity generators droning in the background. It's late September, 2018, and the searing heat of day has given way to chilling breezes. As a full moon rises across the blue waters of the Dead Sea that separates Israel from Jordan, a blast from the shofar signals the festival has begun. This is the opening night of Sukkot, the Jewish harvest festival, when the Bible calls for an "ingathering" of Jews to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. These days, Christian Zionists believe this biblical ingathering also includes them. Christian Zionists from over 100 countries are here as the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem hosts the 6-day celebration. And , as we are learning on this reporting journey, if you really want to follow the global movement of Christian Zionism, follow the money. For this report, we've reviewed dozens of US tax returns from Christian Zionist organizations. Over the last 20 years, a handful of nonprofits has raised over 2 billion dollars in support of Israel. In this episode we navigate these financial streams, and the burgeoning political alliance between the far right in Israel and Christian Evangelicals in the United States, and increasingly around the world.
It’s late September, 2018, and the searing heat of day has given way to chilling breezes. As a full moon rises across the blue waters of the Dead Sea that separates Israel from Jordan, a blast from the shofar signals the festival has begun. When the young David killed Goliath, he became a national hero, and within five years, David was commanding a fierce band of king Saul’s army. Saul—a man who looked like a king, but didn’t have the heart of a king—grew increasingly jealous of David, finally sending a team of men to assassinate David in his bed. David escaped, and he went on the run. Recruiting six hundred very tough mercenaries, David went to work for the Philistines, Israel’s sworn enemy. Yet, all the while, David played the double agent, feeding information to Saul’s son, Jonathan, as Jonathan fed misinformation about David to Saul. The confrontation between David and king Saul was inevitable. Saul had every resource tasked to find David. And finally, at the caves of En Gedi—David’s hideout—the two meet. This is a GREAT story!
Pastor Bryan James preaches live from Ein Gedi, Israel. He talks about King David and his greatest leadership challenge. Worship Pastor Jedi Horca shares a special original song called "Empty Space".
In our summer series we Travel Through the Bible.
Join us as we visit Ein Gedi in Israel. We journey back 3,000 years ago to David hiding in Ein Gedi from a jealous Saul. Take in Hans Weichbrodt's message as you learn three powerful lessons from the desert. These are the recordings from our trips: Break Forth Journeys- Spiritual Journeys to the Lands of the Bible. These messages have been recorded right on site during our trips to the lands of the Bible. We’ll be bringing you messages right from Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Greece and beyond. Each episode will bring you right to the places where prophets, priests, kings, apostles and of course, our Messiah, Jesus walked. As the message unfolds you’ll hear the living sounds of the very environment around our speaker and you’ll be transported to the very place and time. Pastor JD is teaching, at Ein Gedi, of Davids opportunity to do away with Saul but does not and how this decision reflects David's Godly wisdom and provides life lessons that can be learned from this story.
Welcome to the official report from Israel, where my wife Jessa and I are touring with , who have brought international on- and offline opinion leaders in health and nutrition on a weeklong personalized experience of the burgeoning wellness scene Israel, including us,Lee from , Emily from and Kate from . If you haven't yet discovered Israel as a country to add to your "must-visit" bucket list, you need to do it. Just check out , and for my reports from last year, during which I toured the fitness and exercise scene in Israel. As you read, you'll definitely want to click here tune in to the audio podcast episode that accompanies this episode, which has includes an audio version of the article you're about to read, along with a bonus interview from the folks at Scio, the pocket molecular sensor I write about later in this article. The audio is brought to you by , which is where I buy crazy equipment for my home gym like Zombie kettlebells, battle ropes and sandbags, along with tasty functional foods like Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and Organic Raw Walnut Butter. . OK, let's jump into the top 10 things you can learn from the burgeoning health, wellness and nutrition scene in Israel (and by the way, the photo above is me covered in mud at the Dead Sea). -------------------------- 1. Vegan Food Can Be Damn Tasty On our very first evening in Tel Aviv, we stumbled upon "", a unique vegan restaurant located in the heart of Tel Aviv. From roasted mushroom pate to organic rye and spelt bread to a "sabha" of hot black-eyed peas sautéed with tomatoes, garlic and cilantro on organic tahini (a rich and thick eggplant paste), we dined in style after a long day on the airplane. But the highlight of the meal - by far - was the Mezze spin on "moussaka"- a traditional Greek dish made with layers of eggplant and potatoes with lentil and vegetable stuffing. This stuff literally melts in your mouth. So I twisted the arm of chef Gal Barzilai, a vegetarian and wild plan expert since the age of 13, to hook us up with his custom recipe for moussaka. Here it is. Bon appetit, baby (or as they say here, "be'te-avon"). Mezze Mussaka (as translated from Hebrew to English by ). . Ingredients: -700g chopped onion -2 garlic cloves, crushed -600g orange lentils (soaked/sprouted) - weight after straining and soaking -1 kg mushrooms torn hand into small pieces -100g walnuts + 50g cashew nuts soaked for 30 min in boiled water -1/2 kg sweet potato peeled and thinly sliced -30g sweet paprika -1/4t hot paprika -60g beets -olive oil Vegetables (for layering): -1kg large potatoes, peeled and sliced lengthwise -1 eggplant peeled “zebra” style, sliced thickly (1.5 cm) -handful small tomatoes sliced pretty thick (1 cm) Tahini (put all ingredients in a blender/hand blender; can also mix by hand): -125g raw tahini -150ml cold water -1 garlic clove, crushed -1T wine vinegar -40ml lemon juice -1/2t salt Preparation: 1. Saute 600g onions in white oil (canola, grape seed) when starts to brown, add mushrooms and continue to sauté until nicely browned. Grind in a grinder (thickly, leaving small clump - if needed, add vegetable stock or water), then put aside to chill. 2. Put lentils, cashew and walnuts with the soaking water, final 100g raw onions, beets, 150ml water and both types of paprika in a food processor. 3. Brush potato and eggplant slices with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and put in the oven on very high heat Putting it all together: 1. Brush a pan with a lot of olive oil 2. Layer very densely: eggplant slices, the mushroom/lentil mixture, potatoes, mushroom/lentil mixture, very little tahini, eggplant, thin layer of tahini and top it off with a very dense layer of tomatoes. Brush with olive oil Bake in oven on 190 degrees Celsius for an hour. It is suggested to let the mussaka “rest” for an hour before serving. -------------------------- 2. Dates Aren't Just For Eating The morning after our dinner at , we headed to the Dead Sea - an area well known for it's extremely mineral-rich water - so mineral-rich, in fact, that it is nearly impossible to get your head under the water. You just...float. Here's a video to show you what I mean: Anyways, while at the Dead Sea, we visited . The spa is built on a hillside overlooking a the Dead Sea, and the spa facilities not only contain air saturated with oxygen, but also a bromine treated pool (which I'm floating in on the video above) filled with Dead Sea water. My chosen treatment at Synergy was a "Date Wrap", done with Ein Gedi date mud cream. Apparently, the same polyphenols and flavonoids that make dates such a dark and flavorful fruit also have anti-aging and nourishing properties for the skin. As I lay wrapped up and smelling like a giant human date, I was treated to a head and neck massage. Time will tell if I actually look younger, but apparently this is one of the only places in the world where one can get rubbed down with dates. Eat your heart out, . Anyways, even though I couldn't seem to find date mud cream for you anywhere, this spa did get me thinking about how you can saturate the air in your own house with oxygen, even if you can't smear fruit on your own body. Here's what I found: The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has looked into specific houseplants that can improve indoor air quality by absorbing environmental toxins and increasing oxygen levels. Ferns, particularly the Japanese royal fern, not only release oxygen into the air but also absorb formaldehyde. The Boston fern adds both oxygen and humidity to indoor air. Gerbera daisy purifies and boosts the oxygen level of the air of your home while you sleep at night, making this a good choice for bedrooms. Other indoor plants considered highly efficient in oxygen production and air purification include heartleaf philodendron, snake plant, spider plant, Chinese evergreen and golden pothos. So there you have it. NASA studies indicate that 15 to 18 plants in 6- to 8-inch-diameter pots will adequately increase the oxygen in the air in an 1,800-square-foot residential home. This translates to approximately one large potted plant or two smaller potted plants about every 100 square feet. Now your home can be just like this (and here's a photo of me inside this gorgeous spa). -------------------------- 3. You Can Put Coconut Milk In Your Cocktails Yes, you simply must drink some alcohol while in Israel. I of course, have been, every night. Here's an idea of the crazy cocktail concoctions I was served just last night at the famous (this is an advantage of being a blogger - they just brought me a sample platter of cocktails). -Hendrix Masala: Gin Hendrix, Campari, Sake, Red Vermouth, Masala Tea -Lady Gin: Gin, Chartreuse, Cucumber, Fresh Lime, Ginger -Red Old Sage: Sage, Stolichnoya, Pomegranate, Ginger -Green Tai: Stoli, Sake, Litchi, Cream, Green Tea -Sharp Satori: Pineapple, Stolichnoya ginger, Remy Martin, Wasabi, Lemongrass And my favorite... -Punducherry: Strawberry Vodka, Vermouth, Coconut Milk, Lemongrass, Herbal Berries With a mix of herbs, fresh muddled fruits and a few goodies thrown in like coconut milk and green tea, I actually wasn't too guilty after indulging in this alcohol-infused sampling. Go ahead and try one of these recipes for yourself this holiday season (just be sure to ). This may come as no surprise to you if you listened to Podcast #267, in which we had the following conversation about the and the olive oil martinis I make (): Ben: ...now, I actually I’m part of this club called the They send 3 bottles of olive oil to my house every quarter from like a different area in the world like Australia or Chile or this last one is from Italy. Brock: You really know how to party, don’t you? Ben: Well, that’s what I’m getting at. You can do olive oil tasting, it’s actually kinda interesting. It’s somewhere a wine and that you start to recognize the flavors and the aromas and whether an olive oil is herbaceous or sweet or smoky, etc. but you can also make drinks out of olive oil and what I’ll do is take a shot of olive oil and put that like in a martini shaker and then I’ll take a really nice vodka and put 1-2 shots of that in there, squeeze a lemon, do a little bit of olive juice, so it’s kind of like a dirty martini with a splash of olive oil and then I’ll just strain that into a martini glass, sprinkle a little bit of sea salt on there, garnish with an olive and it’s olive oil vodka martini and it taste fantastic like the olive oil adds this splash of flavor that you don’t get in a regular martini and the mouth feel, like you’d think it be like oily but it’s actually got this really cool kinda mouth feel, it’s a very enjoyable drink. Anyone who hasn’t tried an olive oil martini before should try one. So there you have it. Now you can add coconut milk into your cocktails too. L'chaim! (photo below is me with the other bloggers and my wife, washing down our cocktails with a tasty glass of Jordanian merlot) -------------------------- 4. You Can Exercise Anywhere When I'm traveling, I have standby workouts, and this trip to Israel is no exception. For example, if I find a gym, I'll often do my twist on a 5x5 workout - which is basically 5 sets of 5 repetitions of 5 different heavy lifting exercises. But I throw mobility and movement exercises in the 90 second to 2 minute recovery periods between each 5 rep lift, like this: -5x5 Bench - Walking lunges while reaching for the sky (10 per leg) for recovery -5x5 Barbell Back Squat - Bird Dog Opposite Arm-Opposite Leg Extensions (10/side) for recovery -5x5 Power Clean - Ab Hollowing With Back On Ground With Deep Breathing (10 breaths) for recovery -5x5 Deadlift - “Quiet” Box Jumps With Silent Landing (10 reps) for recovery -5x5 Push Press - Bicycle Crunches (10/side) for recovery If I'm limited to a hotel room workout, I'll often strap on a (use 20% discount code GREEN1) and do a body weight workout for 4-6 rounds like this: -20x burpees -10x lunge jumps for each leg -20x rows -20x mountain climbers per leg -60 second handstand hold against wall during recovery And of course, just like Venice Beach and Miami, they have gyms along the beach here in Tel Aviv, so you can throw down a weight workout with the locals while you're cycling or jogging on the boardwalk along the Mediterranean Sea. Incidentally, whether I'm traveling or I'm at home, I log every workout I do, 365 days a year, for all (if you're already an Inner Circle member, just and click "Life Of Ben"). -------------------------- 5. You Can Measure Anything. Really. As you listen to the audio version of this article, you're going to hear a special interview with a start-up located right here in the heart of Tel Aviv: . SCiO is the world's first portable molecular sensor that literally fits in the palm of your hand. It contains a tiny spectrometer and allows you to get instant information about the chemical make-up of just about anything around you, sent directly to your phone. SCiO is based on near-IR spectroscopy analysis method. The physical basis for this method is that each type of molecule vibrates in its own unique way, and these vibrations interact with light to create its own unique optical signature. The device includes a light source that illuminates the sample and an optical sensor (the spectrometer) that collects the light reflected from the sample. The spectrometer breaks down the light to its spectrum, which includes all the information required to detect the result of this interaction between the illuminated light and the molecules in the sample. Normal spectrometers are big (about the size of a laptop) and expensive (tens of thousands of dollars). SCiO is unique as it is based on a tiny spectrometer, designed from the ground up to be mass-produced with low cost optics - with minimal compromise on the analysis capabilities. So based on this technology, SCiO can actually read the chemical make-up of any materials around you, including food, plants, medication, oil and fuels, plastics and wood. For example, you can: -Get nutritional facts about different kinds of food: salad dressings, sauces, fruits, cheeses, and much more. -See how ripe an avocado is, through the peel. -Find out the quality of your cooking oil. -Know the well being of your plants. -Analyze soil or hydroponic solutions. -Authenticate medications or supplements. -Upload and tag the spectrum of any material on earth to our database (including your own body). Every time you use SCiO you actually help to build a database of knowledge about the stuff around us. The bigger the SCiO community gets, the more data SCiO will have about different materials and this goes right back to the community of users. , and listen to my podcast interview with the inventors here. -------------------------- Alright, that's it for now...but more to come later, including information about a brand new startup that can analyze and give you instant nutritional facts on any recipe you find on any food blog or website, anywhere, and another startup that allows you to instantly check how polluted the air is where you're at, and the "cleanest air" routes for running, hiking, or cycling. Stay tuned. Shalom - and be sure to if you need killer fitness gear or functional foods that optimize performance, stay tuned for more on what you can learn from the wellness and nutrition scene in Israel, extra entertaining videos from this trip, and tips on taking your own to health and fitness vacation to Israel. In the meantime, leave your question, comments and feedback at ! photos by
