This is a long one, lil onions, but we could just not do a two-parter. We cannot be prolonging this!!! Because this week, we are unpacking Emerald Fennel's extremely disturbing, one of a kind thriller, Saltburn (2023). The siblings ride the roller coaster of the film following protagonist, Oliver Quick, from Oxford University to the mysterious summer estate of Saltburn to spend the summer with his new friend, Felix. Moment to moment, you can't be sure what happens next, and it's disconcerting. Ross can't get over the levels of depravity characters will abide, Carie is caught up in the ridiculous depth of the bathshit narrative, and the siblings are once again requesting emotional damages from the film's production team.

Join us for a chat about Saltburn, the black comedy thriller that had everyone talking in 2023. Emerald Fennel's film tells the story of Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a scholarship kid at Oxford who befriends the charming, fabulously wealthy aristocrat Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). When Oliver's father dies unexpectedly, Oliver is reluctant to return home to his mother, who struggles with substance problems and mental illness, and so Felix kindly invites him to stay over summer at his family home, Saltburn. It's there that Oliver meets Felix's unconventional family, and he soon finds himself irresistibly drawn into an intoxicating world of sex, death and hedonism. In the podcast today, we're talking nostalgia and vibes as we reminisce about the good old days of 2007, when indie music ruled the world and the height of teenage fashion was a Topshop dress or a Jack Wills hoodie. Does Saltburn signal a vibe shift back to the sounds and sights of the early 00s? And does the film succeed in its attempt to portray dark desires, complex relationships and psychological depth, or is it all just style over substance? Hosted on Acast. St. Patricks' month comes to MAYBE the most upsetting possible conclusion; This week we are discussing David Slade's 2006 film ‘Hard Candy'. Starring Patrick Wilson, Elliot Page, and Sandra Oh, this film draws a wildly striking resemblance to Emerald Fennel's ‘Promising Young Woman'. Good, bad, and ugly, this film makes for some excellent conversation. A HUGE thank you to Kalie McAlexander for our social media. This time on 15, Luke and Dan rattle off their reviews for three recent films that they should have got round to critiquing sooner. Firstly, Luke gets frustrated by Wonka, the musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby. The picture tells the origins of Willy Wonka, featuring his early days as a chocolatier. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the title character, and with an ensemble cast including Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant, it is the third live-action film based on Roald Dahl's novel. Next up is the film that grabbed everyone's attention, Saltburn. Emerald Fennel's second offering is black comedy psychological thriller featuring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant. The film focuses on a student at Oxford University who becomes fixated with a popular, aristocratic student who later invites him to spend the summer at his eccentric family's estate. Then, after a handy tip off from Luke, the pair discuss Theater Camp, a 2023 American mockumentary comedy film directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. The movie follows the counsellors of an underfunded theatre-focused summer camp as they band together with the founder's son to keep the camp afloat. To wrap up the show, they agree to quickly review two extra films that the other has no interest in seeing. Dan shares his disappointment with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Whereas Luke recommends Air, the film that's based on true events about the origin of Air Jordan, a basketball shoe-line. Click here to watch the podcast instead. Articolo di cui parliamo nell'episodio: "Emerald Fennell breaks down Saltburn, the wildest film of the year"

Pizza is one of the most powerful cultural signifiers we have, but what exactly is it signifying? This week we're joined by Blair Socci to dive into the pizza place as a mythic space and try to make sense of what it all means. Let's just say it's one spicy meatball. It's the fall of 2006, you know what that means…Arcade Fire's 2009 album “The Suburbs” needs to be on the soundtrack! On this week's episode, the Podcast 2 received a call from A24 - they want a sequel to Emerald Fennel's 2023 hit film “Saltburn,” this time with even more sucking and slurping. How will we find a new character arc for Barry Koeghen's character, especially when the last one ended with such finality? Will we be able to figure out a way to bring Jacob Elordi back? Will we be able to bring his eyebrow piercing back? Why did we spend so much of the episode talking about Dan Harmon's “Monster House” screenplay? Did we somehow do a second episode in a row that extensively discusses vending machine logistics? What is Pepperburn? Who is “The Throat Ghost?” All that and more on this week's episode of Podca$t 2: The $equel.Follow us on Twitter and InstagramTheme song by Charle WallaceSupport our Feature film, Inter-State, currently in Post-Production

Jacob Elordi in angel wings, period sex, and a MILF Rosamund Pike: Saltburn has been the film du jour but does it deserve its controversial accolades? Ione and Gina get into the many ways that Saltburn remains a contentious watch for most working class people, especially when audiences contextualise the movie through the writer and director, Emerald Fennel's gaze. While critics ask if Saltburn is lambasting the right people, our hosts wonder if this film successfully satirises anything at all. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

CW: Discussions of sexual assault. National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 Written and Directed by former Killing Eve showrunner, Emerald Fennel has redefined the female vigilante with this pastel-colored thriller. Carrey Mulligan stars as Cassie Thomas who is seeking vengeance for the sexual assault of her best friend Nina. This movie lets no one off the hook and takes a close look at how men and women enable rape culture in our society. It examines how predators are not always creepy men who live in the shadows of society but are sometimes everyday men that you meet in the grocery store or are best friends with. The real antagonist of the film is the society that we live in that goes out of its way to protect possible predators and neglects the victims of these men's reprehensible actions. On episode 9 we have a whacky news bulletin, with stories including this year's Razzie nominations, Space Jam 2 controversy as well as Cocaine Bear. We Give our thoughts on "Promising Young Woman" a film directed by Emerald Fennel starring Carey Mulligan. The podcast ends with the Great Screen Debate where this week's topics include, Who is the best actor turned director? What new awards category should the Oscars introduce into the ceremony? and Will Disney+ be the top streaming service?
After calling out star Carey Mulligan for shameless Oscar politicking a few weeks ago, I finally get to see this polemical nice-guy destroying debut from British director Emerald Fennel and it didn't disappoint. An incredibly relevant and wildly ambitious, risk-taking destruction of the excuses around rape-culture, entirely focused on a probable and deserving Oscar winning performance from Mulligan. Amazing and essential film making that leaves no prisoners. And though I stand with the critic who Carey destroyed, he was wrong about Margot Robbie being a more natural fit to this role.
