Today, we're joined by Eric Nguyen, PhD student at Stanford University. In our conversation, we explore his research on long context foundation models and their application to biology particularly Hyena, and its evolution into Hyena DNA and Evo models. We discuss Hyena, a convolutional-based language model developed to tackle the challenges posed by long context lengths in language modeling. We dig into the limitations of transformers in dealing with longer sequences, the motivation for using convolutional models over transformers, its model training and architecture, the role of FFT in computational optimizations, and model explainability in long-sequence convolutions. We also talked about Hyena DNA, a genomic foundation model pre-trained on 1 million tokens, designed to capture long-range dependencies in DNA sequences. Finally, Eric introduces Evo, a 7 billion parameter hybrid model integrating attention layers with Hyena DNA's convolutional framework. We cover generating and designing DNA with language models, hallucinations in DNA models, evaluation benchmarks, the trade-offs between state-of-the-art models, zero-shot versus a few-shot performance, and the exciting potential in areas like CRISPR-Cas gene editing. Eric Nguyen has been a staple of the comic book industry for over 20 years, working for Marvel, DC, and every other major publication, drawing classics such as X-men, Batman, Hulk, Old Man Logan, Quicksilver, Sandman, Fables, and many more. A graduate from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a degree in entertainment/transportation design, Eric got his start in comics partnering with Rick Remender, where they co-created "Strange Girl" with Image Comics and "Gigantic", published by Dark Horse Comics. As a concept artist, Eric has design credits for Xbox live video games and worked on the Halo franchise as well. One of his greatest accomplishments was when R&B superstar "The Weeknd" personally chose him to draw his futuristic epic comic "Starboy" for Marvel Comics. His latest, "White Savior," is his first foray into both writing and comedy, and he's proud of the work and the message it brings to readers. We get to learn a little bit more about Eric's upbringing after moving to the US at 3 years old. He tells us about how he got into comics and what his parents thought about this decision in pursuing a career as a comic book artist. We get some insight into the challenges Eric has faced throughout his career and the importance of having AAPI representation in this industry. For all the comic book lovers we get to hear about what his favorite characters are to draw, his experience working with DC and Marvel, and we get a better understanding of his newest series “White Savior”. To end it all off for future comic book artists he gives some words of wisdom and encouragement!
Jeff and Phil welcome Eric Nguyen and Scott Burman, creators of WHITE SAVIOR, a hilarious comic book spoof of white savior stories (à la The Last Samurai, The Great Wall). They talk about their creative partnership, the unique confidence of white guys, and why the time was right for a samurai skewering of this tired and tiring narrative trope.
I'm going to keep having comic book creator guests until you get it through your heads that comics are the greatest storytelling medium of all time! Okay. Now that I've said that, please welcome 'White Savior' co-creators Eric Nguyen and Scott Burman onto Geekscape this week! 'White Savior' spoofs movies like Avatar and The Last Samurai and the whole idea of the white "outsider destined to save everyone"! What if they were actually an idiot? What if the real hero is an Asian American teacher who time travels to feudal Japan and has to convince everyone to absolutely NOT follow the "white savior"? We'll discuss (and make fun of) the problematic storytelling trope of the white savior, talk about releasing the idea as a new Dark Horse Comic and lots more! This is going to be a great one! With his debut novel, Nguyen tells the story of a Vietnamese immigrant family who struggle to adjust to their new lives after settling in New Orleans. THINGS WE LOST TO THE WATER Provides three points of view on their emotional journey: The mother, who still longs for the husband who chose to stay in Vietnam, the son who was five years old when they left and finds himself caught between the past and the present, and the youngest son who was born in a refugee camp after their escape, and is most at home in their adopted homeland. Covering over 25 years of their lives all the way to Hurricane Katrina, THINGS WE LOST TO THE WATER deftly portrays the challenges of a family staying emotionally tied as each member follows their own path in search of a new identity.Eric Nguyen earned an MFA in Creative Writing from McNeese State University in Louisiana. It is always darkest right before dawn. The bigger your challenge, the greater your growth will be when you come out the other side. ㅤ ... ㅤ Edited by: @benlionelscott Spoken by: John Cena, Chetwyn Pete, Robin Sharma, Steven Furtick Footage by: Lucozade, Adidas, Nike, BaderContentStudios, VASHR, Jordan, Red Bull, Under Armour, Beats by Dre, VRSUS FILM, Everlast, Rod Blackhurst, Eric Nguyen, Thank You for Your Service, Childline Music: Secession Studios - EPOCH ㅤ ... ㅤ Sometimes you can try so hard at something, sometimes you can be so so prepared and still fail. And with every time you fail, it's painful. I often said a man's character is not judged after he celebrates a victory but by what he does when his back is against the wall. You're fighting for your finances, you're fighting for your faith, your peace, your joy, your marriage. You're in a fight. You've gotta be knocked down and then be willing to continue. You're gonna be laughed at, and you're gonna be ridiculed, you're gonna face self doubt, you're gonna be exhausted at times, you're going to face all sorts of challenges if you wanna get to your Mount Everest. Everything that happens to you is for your growth. It's the times of suffering that make you great. So no matter how great the setback, how severe the failure, you never give up. Your conditions are not always in your control. You don't always get to decide what kind of skies you face, you don't always get to decide what kind of seas you sail on, you don't always get to decide the weather forecast. There are some things that are outside of your control, but your courage is in your control. Come on, you gotta to keep your courage up. Your bank account might be going down, but keep your courage up. Your grades might've gone down last semester, but if you keep your courage up, you can get your grades back up. Even if everything else goes down, keep up your courage. If you gotta borrow some money, if you gotta take a little while, if you gotta take a timeout, just keep going forward and it will happen. Fight with a focus. That's looking beyond what's coming against you, and looking toward what is within you, to know that greater is he that is in me, than he that is in the world. Come on, you need to remember this is not your first rodeo cowboy. This is not the first time you cried, this is not the first time you were short of breath, this is not the first time you didn't see a way clear, this is not the first time you were hurt, this is not the first time your heart was broken, this is not the first time you didn't have enough money, this is not the first diagnosis that came up from behind. You never give up, you pick yourself up, you brush yourself off, you push forward, you move on, you adapt, you overcome, that is what I believe.

Download Episode! At the age of 24, Eric visited his last UN country beating Guinness World Record Holder, James Asquith. Eric grew up in northern California, the son of Vietnamese immigrants. He had the opportunity of international travel with his family growing up. But his travel began in earnest when he went backpacking in East and Southeast Asia when he was just 18. He was inspired to visit every country in the world and attempt to break the world record for three reasons. First, Eric was inspired by world traveler and former guest, Gunnar Garfors. Second, Eric learned about James Asquith, the Guinness World Record Holder at the time, the youngest person to travel to every country in the world. But the final catalyst was a meeting with his college professor who encouraged him to see the world when he was young. Eric at times threw caution into the wind when pursuing his quest. He couchsurfed in Libya, while local militias learned of his presence. He had a very challenging time in West Africa. He was in a motorcycle accident. Eric also caught malaria and was robbed while he recovered in his hospital room. Eric crossed into Yemen at the Omani border. Later, he attempted to return to Oman, but was denied entry. For five days, Eric was held in a detention center at the border. Eric celebrated in May when he arrived in his last country of Eritrea. Subscribe on iTunes today!
