In this powerful and heartfelt first part of a two-part conversation, we're joined by the insightful and compassionate Adam Skandarani—Certified Control Unleashed Instructor, Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner, and tireless advocate for both dogs with Really Big Feelings and the humans who support them. Adam takes us on their “behavior odyssey,” tracing a journey shaped by learning, unlearning, and growing alongside their two Boxers—Sansa and the unforgettable Flash Gordon. Through stories that are raw, moving, and instructive, Adam shares how Flash, with all his intensity, reactivity, and need for connection, became not just a training challenge but their greatest teacher. Together, we explore: ✅ How unmet social and medical needs can drive misunderstood behavior ✅ Why talking about behavior without discussing its context is a fruitless endeavor ✅ The power of control, decompression, and choice in building behavioral wellness ✅ Lessons from the late great Flash Gordon, ATA's honorary “Chief Remedial Socialization Officer” ✅ Practical ways to support clients navigating resistance around pain assessment ✅ The importance of trainer self-care and embracing therapeutic support This episode is a beautiful reminder that beneath every behavior lies a story—and that when we meet our learners where they are, profound transformation is possible. Dedicated to the memory of Flash, whose legacy continues to teach us all. During a peak era for Hollywood produced conspiracy thrillers, this was one of the most popular and for good reasons.  It was directed by the late, great Oscar-winner Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa, Tootsie, The Firm) and starred two of the most beautiful and enduring stars of this era.  Robert Redford (The Sting, Indecent Proposal) stars as Turner who is an mild-mannered analyst for the CIA who suddenly finds every one in his New York City research office brutally murdered while he went out of lunch....and now he's on the run to get answers, also before some one murders him.  Along the way, he encounters Kathy played by Oscar-winner Faye Dunaway (Network, Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown), an unusually observant painter whom he decides to kidnap while seeking shelter at her apartment....and of course they develop a romance....sort of.  And hot on his heels is the wily assassin Joubert played by the late, great Max Von Sydow (The Seventh Seal, Flash Gordon, Pelle the Conqueror).  What results is a tense cat-and-mouse thriller which was somewhat ahead of its time and is now about to turn Fifty! Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Zo somehow finds himself on a strange world. He doesn't know if he's on a different planet, timeline, dimension or reality, but the one thing that he knows for sure is that he's not in Kansas anymore! In this place there are remarkable sites: floating forest covered moons in the upper atmosphere, floating mountains, a hovering city. There are strange creatures, robots and a variety of people: winged people fill the skies, tree people haunt the forests, and soldiers in gold and red armor patrol the ground. The different tribes seem to bicker with each other, and Zo is saavy enough to understand that there is an over arching presence that oppresses them all. What they need is a unifying force that could band them together so that they might fight their common foe and free themselves from the tyranny that they all live under. Could the hero with the charisma to unify them come in the form of the New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon? Episode Segments00:04:59 Opening Credits for Flash Gordon starring: Sam J. Based on the comic strips and subsequent film serials of the 1930s, the 1980 adaptation was seen as too weird, too cheesy, too campy, and too colorful by many at the time. Over the years, however, those same elements, along with its incredible soundtrack by Queen, have turned it from frequently mocked misfire to cult classic.John Champion of Roddneberry Entertainment joins Derick to discuss the film, its fandom, and its long journey into the cult canon. For more info, head to underratedmoviepodcast.comPatreon:https://patreon.com/UnderratedMoviePodcastInstagram:https://instagram.com/underratedmoviepodcastTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@underratedmoviepodcastYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAbpTHWyBle7yKJv4-gR_g

The A-bomb had contributed to this soft reign of terror. It had also fired a period of excitement and fertility in the neglected field of science fiction. Before WWII, sci-fi in film was widespread, with examples such as Lang's hallmark Metropolis, Things To Come, the silent 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Lost World, and serials populated by Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The war had shifted the focus, to combat and military films, propaganda, home-front boosterism, and escapism. The war also brought awareness of the application of science to conflict. Atomic power had brought an entirely new set of horrific sci-fi characters --- as embodied by Bela Lugosi, played by Martin Landau in the film Ed Wood: “Today it's all giant bugs. Giant spiders, giant grasshoppers...” Increasingly, sci-fi enemies came from the outside, from other worlds loosening tremendous power upon the Earth, or beings from our world mutated and terribly changed by atomic power. Or sometimes, both. Aliens of all types were lurking every week at the Bijou in the 1950s. The Day The Earth Stood Still. The Thing From Another World, The War Of The Worlds. Some of these films were silly, and as characterized by Lugosi/Landau --- giant bugs. Some became classics, despite their pedigree, as in the film Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The 1956 offering had an unlikely path to greatness, but it's stood the test of time because of the themes that run through its bones.Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

That is of course the original Flash Gordon serials & its contemporaries.Just like your podcast, there's no hedging of bets, as this episode spends an impressive amount of time in glorious black & white. It revels in every single moment while injecting that vibrant Voyager charm & giving us a great Trek episode to boot!Fantastic (often over the top) acting, amazing whit, excellent one liners. It's about to get pretty cheesy, Slackers!First though, this episode is dedicated to Rick Derringer. Rock legend, producer extraordinaire, and of course the man who brought us the classic wrestling theme song, Real American. Rest in peace, - brother. This week we dive into a selection of 1980s sci-fi and fantasy films that shaped Gen X, including Krull, The Beastmaster, and Flash Gordon. Blending sword-and-sorcery with space opera, these films thrilled audiences with their larger-than-life stories and practical effects, despite a cheesy charm that could captivate or repel viewers, then and now. Were they “good”? Some were truly great; others were, honestly, gloriously terrible. We explore how these films, despite their campy flair, connected with young audiences through tales of underdog heroes and fantastical worlds. Their earnest, sometimes over-the-top storytelling captured the era's spirit, proving good intentions can make a lasting impression. And did you know The Sword and the Sorcerer brought the stars of TV's Matt Houston and Manimal together on the big screen?Join us as we celebrate these Gen X cult classics, embracing their cheesy yet endearing qualities that continue to entertain. Ah, the 80s, where bold heroes, mythical creatures, and cosmic battles ruled the screen with distinctive, lighthearted charm. It doesn't always need to be bleak to leave a mark. Modern filmmakers should keep this is mind!

Escuchar audio

As we celebrate yet another May the 4th (be with you), Mikey, d$ and #XlessDrEarl change up their Star Wars topics a bit - instead of fave scenes or ranking the movies, this time, its a look at all the movies that Star Wars inspired... some that turned out to be legendary... some that turned out to be legendarily bad... Can't Force alone, so the crew invites in Fan Fave and longtime friend of the show Hurricane Rhett Barnett, and he gives his own take on the 2024 comedy horror movie "Heretic" as well as a brief chat about the rerelease of "Revenge of the Sith", which has Mikey using the word "Refractory" and Rhett using the phrase "Marital Bed".   Then they play what turns about to be a disastrous version of "Everything Everywhere All At Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", which may end up being retired at some point because no one can play the stupid thing (note: d$'s opinion). Then, a top five of Star Wars Adjacent, with some classic Flash Gordon and a chat about Sam Jones and Jacko (OY!), plus star fighters and dark stars and stars with battles beyond them, plus a glave, a hole, Ridley Scott's inspiration, and even kitchen appliances in a classic short film.

Some people think Mike Hodges' 1980 Flash Gordon movie is cheesy trash and hate it; others think it's over-the-top hilarious and enjoy it. But some weirdos truly LOVE this exercise in tonal whiplash, and your humble hosts are two such men. We'll talk about the film as an adaptation of both the original Alex Raymond source material and the Buster Crabbe serials, and how it proudly defies Star Wars' revisionist sci-fi aesthetic. But we'll also try to dig underneath the spectacle to expose the genuinely rousing humanistic heroism at this movie's core. Pathetic Earthlings, who can save you now?Well, there might be one guy...Flash Gordon has been on our screens for almost 90 years, and the story of the dashing all-American hero, his companions, and his battles against Ming the Merciless laid the groundwork for modern sci-fi, influencing everything from Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and Doctor Who.From his humble comic strip roots, Flash's adventures were perfect for a modern film adaptation, and legendary film mogul Dino De Laurentiis was adamant he knew what he wanted for his Flash Gordon; a visual feast, a lavish production, a playful tone and his friend Danilo Donati as the production and costume designer. From its colourful costumes to its campy dialogue, Flash Gordon is a spectacle that has transcended time, and cinema owes Flash a huge debt of gratitude, but it was not an easy movie to make. Its original director Nicolas Roeg ended up leaving after a year, and Mike Hodges stepped up, but with very little control over what you see on screen. Queen's iconic soundtrack for Flash Gordon was groundbreaking, blending rock music with film scoring in a way that had never been done before. Flash Gordon remains a cult classic, influencing generations of filmmakers and fans, and continues to be celebrated for its unique charm and creativity. Despite the issues behind the scenes, and the behaviour of their leading man, Flash Gordon has an undeniable charm that has kept it alive in the hearts of fans worldwide. It alive? Sorry, I meant... In speaking with my two guests, they shared stories of the three generations of writers in the family including, Irene's mother, Wilma, followed by my guest, Irene and her son Brendan. Brendan is an award winning graphic novel/picture book author and acquiring editor at Blackstone Publishing where he also runs the TV and Film Division even made notice of having his maternal grandmothers published books on his desk. Brendan shares that he was always supported and encouraged by his family with his passion for comic books which he started writing and drawing caricatures at a young age.In time, Irene expressed "that the family was moving in a different direction and the divorce was almost inevitable." Irene continues, "I'm highly emotionally intelligent and I finally found my tribe. I found people who spoke my language." This all occurred once she went back to school for her Masters Degree in Counseling, and later on became a social worker. Brendan raves about his childhood as a latch key kid. He loved growing up in Connecticut. And now as a father, he appreciates even more what it takes for parents to raise their children. And now he's learned even more about what his mother was going through raising the four Deneen children. Both Irene and Brendan claim to be emotionally intelligent-they are very good at listening to others, which Brendan feels that "not many people listen to one another these days." Brendan has always been there for his mom as a sounding board. Irene says " Brendan was my listening post." When she needed to talk, she call Brendan. They have a special bond for sure. They respect one another.Irene Deneen Murray: Irene Deneen Murray grew up in the 50's, an era when a woman could be a nurse, teacher or secretary. She chose teacher because it pleased her mother. In truth the first half of her life was devoted to taking care of or pleasing her mother. At age 50 having raised 4 kids in a Hollywood -worthy suburb, Irene became a divorcee and learned to love being more adventurous than she had previously ever imagined. By then she was working as a social worker having recently earned a Master's Degree in Counseling. Irene loves the natural world and has been a devoted hiker and later a biker, paddler and pretty consistently a practitioner of yoga. She continues these pastimes presently sometimes to the chagrin of her children since they may picture her falling off a cliff, rolling over in her kayak or some other catastrophe. Her children and grandchildren are her greatest achievement. She is a good observer and has insight galore but is sometimes amazed at how each of her children has developed so uniquely. Brendan Deneen is the author of the novelsThe Ninth Circle andThe Chrysalis, as well as the bestselling four-volume Night Night, Groot picture book series for Marvel/Disney. He's also the author of the middle-grade graphic novelGreen Arrow: Stranded for DC Comics; the novels Morbius: Blood Ties and Guardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation:Conquest from Marvel/Titan, and Alien: Uncivil War from 20th Century Studios/Titan. His other graphic novel work includes multiple volumes of Flash Gordon, an original Island of Misfit Toys book, and the original graphic novel Scatterbrain. In addition to his writing, Brendan has been working in the publishing and film/TV industries for twenty-five years, including development jobs with Scott Rudin Productions and Miramax, as well as editorial and book-to-film jobs with St. Martin's Press and Tor Books. He currently works at Blackstone Publishing, where he's an acquiring editor in addition to running the company's film/TV division, which he created, and where he has dozens of literary projects set up at movie studios, streamers, and networks. His short stories and essays have been published by St. Martin's Press, Reader's Digest Books, 13Thirty Press, and Necro Publications.  Brendan Deneen's Written Works:NOVELS                                                                    The Ninth CircleThe ChrysalisMorbius: Blood TiesGuardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation--ConquestAlien: Uncivil WarTracer GRAPHIC NOVELSScatterbrainFlash Gordon: The Mercy WarsFlash Gordon: Invasion of the Red Sword Flash Gordon: The Vengeance of MingThe Island of Misfit Toys Green Arrow: Stranded PICTURE BOOKSNight Night, Groot First Day of Groot!Snow Day for Groot!Summer Adventure for Groot! Dan Schkade is a terrific artist/writer who is currently drawing the Flash Gordon daily strip for King Features. He's also written and drawn a lot of other cool stuff including The Spirit, Battlestar Galactica, Impossible Jones, and his creator-owned titles; Saint John and Lavender Jack. But what you need to know most it's pronounced "SHKah - dee." Like Scotty. Like the dog. Or the Chief Engineer.

This episode is quite literally the top of my mountain, my crown jewel moment, the summary of every podcast and every Comic Con I have attended. At the Great Lakes Comic-Con, I got to spend the entire weekend with Sam J. Jones himself, better known as Flash Gordon, Quarterback, NY Jets and Savior of the Universe.  Growing up, Flash Gordon was on the same level as Star Wars to me, and I was not only star struck, but in awe of what an amazing person Sam Jones is. They always say, "Don't meet your heroes.", but in this case, I am so happy I was able to.  I spent the entire weekend talking with Sam, but got to record our conversation for about 20 minutes where we talked about Hollywood, Flash Gordon, his appearance in Ted, his family, and life in general. This was bittersweet however, as the founder of Great Lakes Comic-Con, Mike DeSantis, tragically passed away a couple days before the event. I didn't get to thank him for this opportunity, but I am sure I will one day. RIP Mike. A million thank yous to my producer and co-host Randy Walker who spent hours cutting up 2hrs and 45 minutes of raw footage (because I didn't know how to work the Zoom mic).
